Emilia Pérez - Oscar tipped Netflix musical with guns, cops, body bags and trannies
It's from writer/director Jacques Audiard who made the exceptional The Beat My Heart Skipped, Rust And Bone and A Prophet.
The film stars Latinxs Selena Gomez. Zoe Saldana, Edgar Ramirez and Karla Sofía Gascón who is tipped to become the first tranny to get a Best Actress nomination, despite being a supporting character.
It won best actress at Cannes for the ladies involved and reviews have been good but it doesn't feel like anyone is talking about it other than critics?
What you say Datalounge?

Got through the first ten minutes.
I hate musicals.

I loved this movie. It is on Netflix and I was not sure what I was going to watch....but thrilling, and touching. A blast, only a European director could dare to do it.

Wanted to start a thread on this brilliant, startling, innovative new film but searched first to find two, both underperforming. This one needs to be bumped so here I am.
I really hope you all watch the movie. If anything is h=going to take down Cynthia Arivo, this is it.

I appreciated the ambition but the movie would work better without the music. I didn’t hate the music but it didn’t add anything to the story. All the leads were great and the story interesting enough on its own, Even Selena was good in this and she’s horrible in OMITB.

I have to agree about the intrusive musical numbers. Couldn't imagine anyone thinking they were adding to the storytelling and much-needed tension.
And yeah, Selena....who knew??
Supposedly they're putting Zoe Saldana up for Supporting Actress, so she won't compete with Karla Sofia Gascon though Zoe is really more the lead. I wouldn't be at all surprised if both won Oscars and edged out Cynthia and Ariana and both win Oscars. I assume they'll all be competing in the Musical category for the Golden Globes, too.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha R10, maybe Zoe Saldana but they aren’t going to award an unknown tranny who can’t sing over the previous nominee who is in the biggest musical movie of all time and also lesbian and black. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for AMPAS to award only the second black woman the best actress Oscar. Karla will be lucky to be nominated.

I don’t know R11, normally I would agree with you but 2016 taught me a lot. I can see the Academy tripping over itself to award a trans POC after Trump is sworn in.
I still haven’t seen Moonlight.

Your loss.
