Los Angeles declares itself an immigration 'sanctuary'

Los Angeles, the second largest US city, is setting itself up for a standoff with President-elect Donald Trump over immigration.

On Tuesday, its city council passed a "sanctuary city" ordinance to bar using local resources to help federal immigration authorities.

LA's public school system also reaffirmed itself as a "sanctuary" for undocumented immigrants and LGBTQ students in a series of emergency resolutions.

Trump, who will be sworn in in two months, has promised mass deportations once he returns to the White House. His chosen "border czar", Tim Homan, has urged sanctuary cities to "get the hell out of the way" of federal immigration crackdowns.

The term "sanctuary city" has been popular in the US for more than a decade to describe places that limit their assistance to federal immigration authorities. Since it is not a legal term, cities have taken a variety of approaches to becoming "sanctuaries", such as setting policies in laws or simply changing local policing practices.

Aimed at making a 2019 executive order into city law, the city council's sanctuary city ordinance prohibits using city resources for immigration enforcement, including cooperating with federal immigration agents, NBC News Los Angeles reports.

Undocumented?

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

by Anonymousreply 2November 20, 2024 2:41 PM

Doesn’t LA have enough home grown functional problems to deal with, without adding this to the trough.

by Anonymousreply 3November 20, 2024 2:45 PM

Good comment:

[quote]I really wish Los Angeles, and California, would not go extreme on things that aren't tenable just to counterbalance Trump. We already struggle to pay for safe streets, housing, schooling, etc. This is why Democrats lost in 2024. It could happen here in CA too.

[quote]As an LA homeowner, I pay for the schooling of a lot of people through my taxes, and it's not that fun to know that so many came here illegally. On a human level I'm sympathetic. But California cannot be everything for the whole world and it's arrogant to think it can. I would like to live in a State that can afford to house and school those who are here legally.

[quote]And also - allow kids to just be gay and lesbian. What was wrong with that?? No need to 'transition', to give oneself over to horrible procedures and a life of drugs. Other than rare individuals, the trans thing is a recent invention of theorists which has gone berserk in our culture, and not coincidentally, there's lots of money to be made by the medical profession to support it. For the love of people, stop coddling this "I'm not what I patently am" madness in schools of all places.

by Anonymousreply 4November 20, 2024 2:48 PM

It is GREAT to hear that LAUSD has solved all of its numerous educational issues and now has the extra bandwidth to interject itself into national politics.

by Anonymousreply 5November 20, 2024 2:51 PM

“ And also - allow kids to just be gay and lesbian. What was wrong with that?? No need to 'transition', to give oneself over to horrible procedures and a life of drugs. “

?????

No one is under the obligation to be ‘JUST’ a gay or a lesbian, not in a free democracy, people can choose what’s best for them.

Plus, gays and lesbians ARE NOT trans, do not manifest gender dysphoria THEREFORE this person is just another ignorant rube making a simplistic and HOMOPHOBIC low IQ observation.

Transgenderism IS NOT an evolution of homosexuality, it’s a different matter that has always been there.

by Anonymousreply 6November 20, 2024 3:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 7November 20, 2024 3:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 8November 20, 2024 3:04 PM

That’s a republican talking point, similar to “Everyone is gay nowadays”

Or “ If same sex marriage happen, people will no longer reproduce”

Paranoia, plain and simple.

by Anonymousreply 9November 20, 2024 3:07 PM

R1 When will the Democrats ever learn?

by Anonymousreply 10November 20, 2024 3:07 PM

No child needs to be gay against their will. It’s not their fault it’s , as the future head of HHS has told us, the bad chemicals. In 2025 we will have programs to fix what is wrong with these poor children.

And this time those programs will work

Praise the lord

by Anonymousreply 11November 20, 2024 3:11 PM

Stunning and brave, LA!

by Anonymousreply 12November 20, 2024 3:15 PM

Is the LAPD going to resist federal agents/troops by force? If not, this is meaningless.

by Anonymousreply 13November 20, 2024 3:18 PM

When federal troops invade LA to enforce the law this will be must see TV. And trumps approval ratings will improve,

OK that last part is a guess

by Anonymousreply 14November 20, 2024 3:19 PM

How many more people will take their money and MOVE from LA? As it is, the state is constantly hungry for everyone’s money.

by Anonymousreply 15November 20, 2024 3:23 PM

Did they check with the citizens of LA about this first? Does it have real support?

by Anonymousreply 16November 20, 2024 3:38 PM

Citizens? You mean, actually caring what they think? Hahahaha!

You're too funny!

by Anonymousreply 17November 20, 2024 4:08 PM

Los Angeles will soon have a Republican mayor!

by Anonymousreply 18November 20, 2024 4:09 PM

What the hell does being a "LGBTQ student" have to do with immigration status?

This shit makes zero sense.

by Anonymousreply 19November 20, 2024 4:10 PM

[quote] Did they check with the citizens of LA about this first? Does it have real support?

In our representative democracy, the citizens through their votes have indicated they support the judgement of the people they elected. That’s where it starts, so yes, the citizens have shown their support for the kind of people who would enact this. If the elected officials end up doing something the citizens don’t like, the citizens should have done a better job of selecting the officials.

[quote] But the politicians don't run on the issues they implement when in office [R20]

That’s why we don’t just list a set of policy positions on the ballots. It’s the people. Voters have to look at both the policy positions and who the people are and determine to the best of their ability if the person is someone who will make choices in office consistent with what the voter would want.

Really - illegal immigrants is a top priority relative to so many other issues that are facing us with a second cheeto term and his absurd cabinet choices?

How about a HHS secretary who doesn't believe in vaccines? How about an attorney general with ethics violations.

Come on - stop picking stupid fights which just push more people to side with the rethugs.

Focus and prioritize. Do none of these people have a basic understanding of how to get things done - FFS.

by Anonymousreply 30November 20, 2024 5:17 PM

Eric Adams is probably already preparing to bus NYC immigrants to LA.

by Anonymousreply 31November 20, 2024 5:17 PM

Los Angeles should defund the police and get immigrants to solve all the crimes.

by Anonymousreply 32November 20, 2024 5:19 PM

LA city government is filled with virtue-signaling incompetents. We now have 3 socialists on the City Council, and one more just got elected to oversee our downtown, which is already full of empty storefronts, with drugged out zombies and mentally ill people roaming the streets in huge numbers. We can’t build anything. Empty lots in formerly thriving commercial areas sit vacant for years on end, overgrown with weeds. We have RVs illegally parked all over the city, surrounded by junk collected by their inhabitants, dumping their waste directly into storm drains. Traffic laws are basically unenforced. Two of the socialists on the council pushed to eliminate licensing requirements for street vendors, so now many of our sidewalks are monopolized by makeshift tents where recent arrivals from the third world sell a hodgepodge of “merchandise”, much of it stolen. Losers with spray paint cans have tagged up every surface of the city. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it’s almost impossible to find a street sign that isn’t graffitied over. Low-level street crime is rampant. Even our taco stands get robbed. And on and on.

This is anarcho-tyranny: rules only for those deemed “privileged”, a free-for-all for everyone else.

The voters just ousted our pro-criminal DA and voted to make theft and public drug use rampant again. People have had it.

But of course, our leaders remain committed to the woke social engineering project. They can’t stop the federal government from doing anything on immigration, but they’ll rush to TAKE A STAND on this issue because meaningless gestures are all they’re good for. They can’t read the room, and they won’t, until they’re removed from power.

by Anonymousreply 33November 20, 2024 6:03 PM

Sorry, the penultimate paragraph should have read:

The voters just ousted our pro-criminal DA and voted to make theft and public drug use felonies again.

by Anonymousreply 34November 20, 2024 6:06 PM

Performative - the feds don't care if you don't spend any local money on this.

Nobody supports illegal immigration - it's not legal and it's not going through a process to help those who do.

To support it is just a losing position. We can NOT take in everyone from a poor country. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 41November 20, 2024 7:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 42November 20, 2024 7:28 PM

[quote] The US troops could start on the east coast and do a large sweep that stops once they arrive in Immigration Central aka LA.

People have pointed out that there could be adverse consequences on agriculture, so it would make sense to start sweeps in large cities. Politically, it would make sense to do it in cities that were overwhelmingly Biden areas.

by Anonymousreply 43November 20, 2024 7:34 PM

I think that being a 'sanctuary' city just means CA will not use state or local resources in service of the federal immigration agenda. It is particularly important that LAUSD not be involved. Teachers should not be further burdened by being deputized as ICE agents.

I think it is fair that the federal government should have to use its own resources to implement its immigration policy.

by Anonymousreply 44November 20, 2024 7:41 PM

R44 - thank you for your sane, reasonable, and realistic clarification on what this actually likely means. What a bunch of melodramatic, Mary-ing ninnies some of you other comments are with your emotional "oh ho! The sky is falling! The sky is falling! by Anonymousreply 45November 20, 2024 8:46 PM

LA might want to take a look at NYC

He was also arrested for a string of assault, grand larceny, robbery, and transit evasion incidents in Queens and Manhattan between January and August, per sources.

The migrant had been due to face a Queens court on Thursday after taking a guilty plea in one of his earlier arrests, the sources added.

by Anonymousreply 52November 20, 2024 11:24 PM

r6 Who said gay people don't experience gender dysphoria? When I was a boy I definitely identified with female characters, wanted to wear dresses, asked to be called a female name, daydreamed about being a woman. Though I never wanted to cut my dick off. I managed to accept reality. Perhaps transgenderism is a spectrum and I was on the milder side. If there had been a social trend of transitioning at the time things probably would've turned out very differently for me.

by Anonymousreply 53November 20, 2024 11:34 PM

Just wait until city services need to be cut to house, feed, cloth, provide medical care and teach these illegals, and that's just the ones not killing, raping and robbing citizens.

by Anonymousreply 57November 21, 2024 3:39 PM

[quote] Nobody supports illegal immigration - it's not legal and it's not going through a process to help those who do.

That’s not the issue. The issue is what to do with the people who are already here.

If they are working and law-abiding, they should have a way to fix their legal status. Rounding people up, putting them in camps and deporting them is performative cruelty to distract people from other issues. It is unworthy of our history and values. It’s Nazi shit.

by Anonymousreply 58November 21, 2024 4:08 PM

Once upon a time Americans were perturbed that immigrants didn’t bother to learn English. Now, Americans are scared of being murdered by them. Get the migrants OUT. The California thing of the RV’s- it’s all Americans living in cars and RVs! They are on every street in WeHo, Malibu etc etc. It’s all creeps who think it’s great to live with no rent! Many have fucking YouTube channels to make money babbling about living like a creep. Some use a moped they also own to do food deliveries at night. I hate these pricks. They are disgusting. Police don’t give a fuck. I’m sick of paying $3500 a month for a shitty one bedroom with no view! All of the apartments here suck. I have to mention- California MAKES you buy health insurance. Why? Because they say it pays for the immigrants to have insurance for free. IF YOU DONT DO THIS, the IRS charges you ten percent of your yearly income! WHAT. THE. FUCK!!!!! Not car insurance (which nobody has here and cars drive without it!) but fucking health insurance! No. Fuck no. California keeps sticking its hand in my wallet.

Bullshit R57.

I also didn’t like that I was boy, and played with barbie dolls from an early age, that didn’t mean I hated my body or thought it was the worst thing ever to be a boy.

Gender discomfort or frustration about outdated stereotypes unleashed upon us has NOTHING to do with gender dysphoria.

Either you are a proud gay MAN OR you want to have boobs, menstruate, get pregnant, have cellulitis, have womanly hips, have a feminine waist, have female pattern facial hair, have ultra feminine skin, have female pattern voice, have a feminine jawline, feminine cheeks, female pattern forehead, female-like shoulders, female pattern feet….

You can’t do both!

How many gay men do drag?

5%? 10%? And they’re still happy about living as males during the week days or when they are not on the mood to perform

Go to gay porn sites and you’ll see THOUSANDS of hairy chested gay dudes, gay men with bushy beards… or even thousands of effeminate nelly queens still pretty satisfied with their penises and their flat chests.

Therefore, transgenderism ISN’T an evolution of homosexuality and it has nothing to do with it, so much so that trans lesbians and trans bisexual chicks exist.

So please STOP promoting ignorant rightwing propaganda.

Gay children eventually grow up to be gay adults, not transgender adults.

by Anonymousreply 78November 21, 2024 5:48 PM

Uh huh, same way a straight guy would probably kill himself, or at least kill a lot of people if he was forced to have gay sex with anyone for years on a row R79.

That doesn’t mean gay sex should be banned or criminalized it just means that completely heterosexual people need to stay out of it and let othwrs have their fun.

Same with transitions, you couldn’t have had one because you were not transgender, you never were, people who are NEED THEM.

And to say we are trans women who didn’t transition or who decided to just suffer is stupid right-wing propaganda promoted by lunatic conservatives.

I would wager that the majority of the posters in this thread have no idea that Latino's make up 40% of the population of California. 52% in Southern California. Latinos aren't OTHERS to people in southern California. They are paisanos. (Countrymen - -people from the same background).

What Trump is proposing (well, Steven Miller to be precise), is to deport as many of those as possible. The latest proposal is to make legal citizens illegal by declaring them part of an invasion. (Many citizens in southern California have birthright citizenship, which is protected by the 14th amendment and reaffirmed by a Supreme Court decision in 1898). It's called denaturalization. (Look it up).

The fear of hordes of immigrants streaming over the border "invading" the US has been heavily promoted in the far NORTHERN reaches of the US, where the vast majority of people have almost no contact with Latino people. I live in a very white part of Washington state, practically within spitting distance of the Canadian border, and I actually hear people frantic about illegal immigrants. The percentage of Latinos in my area is less than 5%. The power of propaganda is incredible.

Stop making a fetish of the law. That’s not what is upsetting you really. If they were here legally (like the Haitians in Ohio), you’d still be against them. It is your nature to hate outsiders and these are today’s outsiders. If you had been alive in a past time you would have hated whoever was coming in then, and their legal status would not have crossed your mind.

Winning elections is so over rated.

[quote]The fear of hordes of immigrants streaming over the border "invading" the US has been heavily promoted in the far NORTHERN reaches of the US, where the vast majority of people have almost no contact with Latino people. I live in a very white part of Washington state, practically within spitting distance of the Canadian border, and I actually hear people frantic about illegal immigrants. The percentage of Latinos in my area is less than 5%. The power of propaganda is incredible.

I lived in the Northeast for years and -never- met a Mexican immigrant. There were other migrants there (from Brazil, DR, the Carribean, etc) but none from Mexico. I believe this probably contributes to some of the laissez-faire attitudes among Blue Staters re the whole immigration/Border issue: they don't have any fallout from it.

I've always felt it's an issue for the Southwestern and some of the Plains states, and that they can vote to decide how they want to handle their local issues. If people in CA-NM-TX want to build a border wall, and apply for federal funds to do so, let them do so.

Meeting a Mexican/Central American immigrant is not “fallout” unless you are a hysterical fool.

The reason there are so many illegal immigrants is because our political divisions have prevented us from making changes in the law and investments needed to fix the problem. Most of those divisions revolve around what to do about the people already here. When they did finally agree on what to do, Trump killed it so he had a hot political issue to exploit.

Trump’s wall was an empty gesture that was not in fact built and was never going to solve the problem, but it appeals to the kinds of morons posting on this thread

Nobody here is a moron, there have been valid opinions about illegal immigration. Look at r33 for starters.

Anybody who voted for Trump is a moron in my book, unless they are rich and greedy.

We’ll be able to test your theory once the mass repatriations occur. We won’t know until the proper actions are taken.

R31, by bus? Fuck no! We're flying them to any destination in the US. Only the best for these illegals. You just know the airlines are charging a fortune.

R95, do just make shit up? Many people in northern cities with large populations of South Americans are against illegal migrants and the impact they are having on our cities. If you think it is just South Americans walking across the border, you are delusional. There are camps of Chinese men north of the Darien Gap. There is a large number of men from places all over the world and we don't know who the fuck they are. The Biden administration completely let this happen. Fuck they even flew in 320,000 people from various countries.

“If people in CA-NM-TX want to build a border wall, and apply for federal funds to do so, let them do so.”

The problem is NOT trying to tackle Illegal immigration which is partially UNWELCOME ANYWHERE, any country in the world.

The problem is using that hypothetical “wall” to deny that Global warming is a real threat, use it to let Putin do whatever he wants, use it to remove abortion rights, ise to cancel lgbttq rights and to promote a culture of homophobia, using that “wall” as an excuse to promote every sort of negative stereotypes and attitudes towards Black, Asian and brown Americans….
