Los Angeles declares itself an immigration 'sanctuary'
Los Angeles, the second largest US city, is setting itself up for a standoff with President-elect Donald Trump over immigration.
On Tuesday, its city council passed a "sanctuary city" ordinance to bar using local resources to help federal immigration authorities.
LA's public school system also reaffirmed itself as a "sanctuary" for undocumented immigrants and LGBTQ students in a series of emergency resolutions.
Trump, who will be sworn in in two months, has promised mass deportations once he returns to the White House. His chosen "border czar", Tim Homan, has urged sanctuary cities to "get the hell out of the way" of federal immigration crackdowns.
The term "sanctuary city" has been popular in the US for more than a decade to describe places that limit their assistance to federal immigration authorities. Since it is not a legal term, cities have taken a variety of approaches to becoming "sanctuaries", such as setting policies in laws or simply changing local policing practices.
Aimed at making a 2019 executive order into city law, the city council's sanctuary city ordinance prohibits using city resources for immigration enforcement, including cooperating with federal immigration agents, NBC News Los Angeles reports.

Good comment:
[quote]I really wish Los Angeles, and California, would not go extreme on things that aren't tenable just to counterbalance Trump. We already struggle to pay for safe streets, housing, schooling, etc. This is why Democrats lost in 2024. It could happen here in CA too.
[quote]As an LA homeowner, I pay for the schooling of a lot of people through my taxes, and it's not that fun to know that so many came here illegally. On a human level I'm sympathetic. But California cannot be everything for the whole world and it's arrogant to think it can. I would like to live in a State that can afford to house and school those who are here legally.
[quote]And also - allow kids to just be gay and lesbian. What was wrong with that?? No need to 'transition', to give oneself over to horrible procedures and a life of drugs. Other than rare individuals, the trans thing is a recent invention of theorists which has gone berserk in our culture, and not coincidentally, there's lots of money to be made by the medical profession to support it. For the love of people, stop coddling this "I'm not what I patently am" madness in schools of all places.

In our representative democracy, the citizens through their votes have indicated they support the judgement of the people they elected. That’s where it starts, so yes, the citizens have shown their support for the kind of people who would enact this. If the elected officials end up doing something the citizens don’t like, the citizens should have done a better job of selecting the officials.

That’s why we don’t just list a set of policy positions on the ballots. It’s the people. LA city government is filled with virtue-signaling incompetents. We now have 3 socialists on the City Council, and one more just got elected to oversee our downtown, which is already full of empty storefronts, with drugged out zombies and mentally ill people roaming the streets in huge numbers. We can’t build anything. Empty lots in formerly thriving commercial areas sit vacant for years on end, overgrown with weeds. We have RVs illegally parked all over the city, surrounded by junk collected by their inhabitants, dumping their waste directly into storm drains. Traffic laws are basically unenforced. Two of the socialists on the council pushed to eliminate licensing requirements for street vendors, so now many of our sidewalks are monopolized by makeshift tents where recent arrivals from the third world sell a hodgepodge of “merchandise”, much of it stolen. Losers with spray paint cans have tagged up every surface of the city. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it’s almost impossible to find a street sign that isn’t graffitied over. Low-level street crime is rampant. Even our taco stands get robbed. And on and on.
This is anarcho-tyranny: rules only for those deemed “privileged”, a free-for-all for everyone else.
The voters just ousted our pro-criminal DA and voted to make theft and public drug use rampant again. People have had it.
But of course, our leaders remain committed to the woke social engineering project. They can’t stop the federal government from doing anything on immigration, but they’ll rush to TAKE A STAND on this issue because meaningless gestures are all they’re good for. They can’t read the room, and they won’t, until they’re removed from power.

I think that being a 'sanctuary' city just means CA will not use state or local resources in service of the federal immigration agenda. It is particularly important that LAUSD not be involved. Teachers should not be further burdened by being deputized as ICE agents.

r6 Who said gay people don't experience gender dysphoria? When I was a boy I definitely identified with female characters, wanted to wear dresses, asked to be called a female name, daydreamed about being a woman. Though I never wanted to cut my dick off. I managed to accept reality. Perhaps transgenderism is a spectrum and I was on the milder side. If there had been a social trend of transitioning at the time things probably would've turned out very differently for me.

Gender discomfort or frustration about outdated stereotypes unleashed upon us has NOTHING to do with gender dysphoria.
Either you are a proud gay MAN OR you want to have boobs, menstruate, get pregnant, have cellulitis, have womanly hips, have a feminine waist, have female pattern facial hair, have ultra feminine skin, have female pattern voice, have a feminine jawline, feminine cheeks, female pattern forehead, female-like shoulders, female pattern feet….
You can’t do both!
How many gay men do drag?
5%? 10%? And they’re still happy about living as males during the week days or when they are not on the mood to perform
Go to gay porn sites and you’ll see THOUSANDS of hairy chested gay dudes, gay men with bushy beards… or even thousands of effeminate nelly queens still pretty satisfied with their penises and their flat chests.
Therefore, transgenderism ISN’T an evolution of homosexuality and it has nothing to do with it, so much so that trans lesbians and trans bisexual chicks exist.

I would wager that the majority of the posters in this thread have no idea that Latino's make up 40% of the population of California. 52% in Southern California. Latinos aren't OTHERS to people in southern California. They are paisanos. (Countrymen - -people from the same background).
What Trump is proposing (well, Steven Miller to be precise), is to deport as many of those as possible. The latest proposal is to make legal citizens illegal by declaring them part of an invasion. (Many citizens in southern California have birthright citizenship, which is protected by the 14th amendment and reaffirmed by a Supreme Court decision in 1898). It's called denaturalization. (Look it up).
The fear of hordes of immigrants streaming over the border "invading" the US has been heavily promoted in the far NORTHERN reaches of the US, where the vast majority of people have almost no contact with Latino people. I live in a very white part of Washington state, practically within spitting distance of the Canadian border, and I actually hear people frantic about illegal immigrants. The percentage of Latinos in my area is less than 5%. The power of propaganda is incredible.

Stop making a fetish of the law. That’s not what is upsetting you really. If they were here legally (like the Haitians in Ohio), you’d still be against them. It is your nature to hate outsiders and these are today’s outsiders. If you had been alive in a past time you would have hated whoever was coming in then, and their legal status would not have crossed your mind.

[quote]The fear of hordes of immigrants streaming over the border "invading" the US has been heavily promoted in the far NORTHERN reaches of the US, where the vast majority of people have almost no contact with Latino people. I live in a very white part of Washington state, practically within spitting distance of the Canadian border, and I actually hear people frantic about illegal immigrants. The percentage of Latinos in my area is less than 5%. The power of propaganda is incredible.
I lived in the Northeast for years and -never- met a Mexican immigrant. There were other migrants there (from Brazil, DR, the Carribean, etc) but none from Mexico. I believe this probably contributes to some of the laissez-faire attitudes among Blue Staters re the whole immigration/Border issue: they don't have any fallout from it.
I've always felt it's an issue for the Southwestern and some of the Plains states, and that they can vote to decide how they want to handle their local issues. If people in CA-NM-TX want to build a border wall, and apply for federal funds to do so, let them do so.

Meeting a Mexican/Central American immigrant is not “fallout” unless you are a hysterical fool.
The reason there are so many illegal immigrants is because our political divisions have prevented us from making changes in the law and investments needed to fix the problem. Most of those divisions revolve around what to do about the people already here. When they did finally agree on what to do, Trump killed it so he had a hot political issue to exploit.
Trump’s wall was an empty gesture that was not in fact built and was never going to solve the problem, but it appeals to the kinds of morons posting on this thread

Nobody here is a moron, there have been valid opinions about illegal immigration. Look at r33 for starters.

Anybody who voted for Trump is a moron in my book, unless they are rich and greedy.

We’ll be able to test your theory once the mass repatriations occur. We won’t know until the proper actions are taken.

R31, by bus? Fuck no! We're flying them to any destination in the US. Only the best for these illegals. You just know the airlines are charging a fortune.

R95, do just make shit up? Many people in northern cities with large populations of South Americans are against illegal migrants and the impact they are having on our cities. If you think it is just South Americans walking across the border, you are delusional. There are camps of Chinese men north of the Darien Gap. There is a large number of men from places all over the world and we don't know who the fuck they are. The Biden administration completely let this happen. Fuck they even flew in 320,000 people from various countries.

“If people in CA-NM-TX want to build a border wall, and apply for federal funds to do so, let them do so.”
The problem is NOT trying to tackle Illegal immigration which is partially UNWELCOME ANYWHERE, any country in the world.
The problem is using that hypothetical “wall” to deny that Global warming is a real threat, use it to let Putin do whatever he wants, use it to remove abortion rights, ise to cancel lgbttq rights and to promote a culture of homophobia, using that “wall” as an excuse to promote every sort of negative stereotypes and attitudes towards Black, Asian and brown Americans….
