The tabs are reporting that Babs hates Cher and is extremely jealous.

Probably. Although Barbra is more talented and more intelligent, she hid away from the limelight too much since 2000. She wouldn’t even do Will & Grace but Cher did. Cher has been everywhere!

I asked to pre-order a copy of Cher's book at the B&N in Barbra's underground mall, and they called security to escort me out.

Oh, honey. Babs is dumb as a box of rocks. Must we post her online letters again with all the misspellings and grammatical errors? She was barely educated. At least Cher has some self-awareness.

I think Cher's legacy is going to last longer than Babs....Cher's got funner songs, cuter outfits, and frankly, better movies. She's just a more interesting star.
Babs takes herself too seriously and she's pretentious with zero sense of humor. And, oversings all her songs. She made ONE good movie: What's Up, Doc which she really doesn't like or understand why it's still popular.

Oh honey, Trump and his spawn have higher educations - you consider them intelligent ? A college degree is no longer as prestigious as it was pre- 1960s, as everyone has one now.
Streisand didn't need a higher education to move further in life - she became a sensation at 19/ 20 (while most people are in their second year of college and became a self-made multi-millionaire.

Barbra's would have been better had it been released in two volumes and actually gave dirt. Her "teasers" were dreadfully boring. All the book showed was how out of touch she is with mainstream society.
I suspect Cher will give dirt. She's had a lot of men.

I love Barbra. I love Cher too. However, I hate Cher's hairstyle this past year. That long wavy mess that surrounds and overpowers her face is awful. Babs' wavy hair lately is also bad.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 19, 2024 8:17 AM |
Cher was, in the modern vernacular, an influencer. We Boomer Girls (Cher =1946) copied her bell-bottoms, her hair, and her eye makeup. And watched her sass Sonny weekly on television, being THE TV Generation.
Barbra (1942) missed the cool cut, as it were. Though she appeared on TV, Broadway wasn't part of the teen milieu.
I am not denying Barbra's superior talent; I loved her "Live in Central Park" album and played it over and over. I never bought a S&C record nor a solo Cher record.
We're talking strictly in terms of who might sell more memoirs, and I just think Cher's Rock and Roll 60s lifestyle complete with an Allman Brother; a love of her life toyboy; and a transgender child might "win." Plus, Cher might be touring next year, keeping relevant.

R17, she became a sensation at age 22-23 during the run of the original Funny Girl on stage. It’s amazing how Streisand fans cannot accept that and must make it 19 and 20.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 19, 2024 1:21 PM |
R29 She signed a long-term recording contract with Columbia Records, giving her total control of her artistry (from album production to album cover design) in 1962, shortly after turning 20. That was after she was part of the Broadway cast at the Shubert Theater and of the cast recording of 'I Can Get It For You Wholesale' at the age of 19, and part of the musical revue recording of 'Pins and Needles' at age 19.
It's amazing how Streisand non-fans cannot accept that and must pretend her career started with Funny Girl in 1964.

Streisand was a sensation at 20- and became the biggest female star in all entertainment media by age 25.
Streisand wrote her memoir- Cher’s is ghost written. Apparently she is dyslexic.
I love Cher- but Streisand is one of those talents like Garland who come around every 50 or 100 years. No way Cher could carry TV specials, shows and movies on her shoulders like Streisand who did it all by 25 and continued into her 70s. And then there’s the voice… .and the incredible catalogue of albums.

R32, You have a strange concept of "artistry." None of the greatest opera singers wrote their own music, nor (on stage) played a musical instrument. Likewise, did Pablo Casals sing? Or Paganini?
Writing, composing, singing, playing are all separate talents.

Regardless of her youth when first successful, Barbra has always "read" older, similar to Celine. Neither quite made it to "hip and cool."
Cher did.

We don't need for it to spread here on the forum so blatantly, so we call it out. No coniptions or broken hips were sufferred in correcting the 'fake facts'.
R43 Streisand won an Oscar, a Golden Globe and two Grammys for her artistry in 1977.

She won rave reviews when she was singled out for her portrayal of 'Miss Marmelstein'. Critics predicted a big future for her on the Broadway stage - and they were correct.

1) Cher has always been cool...well, mostly. She had a rough patch in the late 70s/early 80s. But, she's always maintainted a certain level of being part of the current zeitgeist. Barbra was always the singer your mom and aunt Stacy liked.
2) Barbra's songwriting cred is dubious...she managed to get herself listed as a contributor to "Evergreen" because she maybe contributed a word or two. What songs has she written sense?
3) If you really think Barbra wrote her memoir by herself, you're delusional. They all have help, especially the ones who claim otherwise.

Songwriting is some Cher doesn't do a lot of. Mainly relying on Diane Warren and others but Not Commerical is a rare example where she did all or nearly all of the songwriting on her own album and she did quite well.
It's an impressive masterpiece that came out between Believe and Living Proof and was only sold on her web site at the time. It's in the same boat as her other one off albums Black Rose and Two The Hard Way but it's the best one out of the whole trilogy. Two The Hard Way gets unfairly shit on a lot for no reason.

R59 Cher was very angry with Barbra in the mid-1970s when Cher was pushing for the remake of 'A Star Is Born' and believed she had the role. When it was announced in the media that Streisand got the part, she was furious - and went to the media to publicly shit all over the decision by the studio. She said in one interview "What the fuck does Streisand know about rock-n-roll ?" which was picked up in the press worldwide. Streisand didn't seem to care, went ahead with the movie, and had one of the biggest box office successes in her career.
The two of them seemed to have smooth things over since then, as Streisand had offered her to play 'Mame' in the TV musical she was producing / directing for ABC in 2002 (Cher accepted, Jerry Herman baced out of the deal when he decided to bring it back to Broadway, which never happened). When Cher turned 70 in 2016, Streisand posted on Cher's social media, 'Welcome to the 70s Club'.

by Anonymous | reply 74 | November 22, 2024 4:25 PM |
I’m guessing R74 doesn’t live in a major city that has actual physical record stores or thrift shops. “Nope”?!?! Walk into any Goodwill or used record stores and you will find scores of Barbra LPs along the likes of Bread, Barry Manilow, Seals and Crofts, Nat King Cole, Ray Conniff Singers, Anne Murray, etc in the dollar bin. Why? Because these artists sold millions of records in their time but the fact is the demand just isn’t there anymore. When I managed a used record store in Boston, there was a strict “no buy-back” policy with her because why pay to re-sell them when they just sit there collecting dust? There are millions of these albums floating around and they’re essentially close to worthless. Nothing particularly wrong with any of those artists I mentioned above, but their cultural currency has long been over. Do you think younger people today are resonating with Butterfly or Lazy Afternoon as much as they are with women like Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell or an album like Dusty in Memphis? Artists who did not sell nearly as much during their prime, but whose music holds up remarkably better than Barbra’s? Have you noticed that Rumours, an album released in 1977, is still in the Billboard Top 50? That’s because people still respond to it, get inspired by it, and will happily dish out $30 for a nice vinyl reissue of it. Even Cher has seen deluxe reissues of albums like It’s a Man’s World, Believe, Living Proof etc in the past couple of years that go for fairly high prices. Record labels won’t release things like that in 2024 unless they’re very certain there’s a market for them. I’m curious, as I’ve seen you post about Barbra’s catalog sales in various other posts on her, where exactly do you get these alleged figures showing Barbra’s back catalog continuing to sell extremely well today?
And, really … “No way Cher could carry TV specials, shows and movies on her shoulders like Streisand who did it all by 25 and continued into her 70s”. Do you know anything about Cher’s career? And what TV specials, shows and movies did Streisand carry on her shoulders in her 70’s?!?! The Guilt Trip? Please. Another thing that makes Cher more interesting and enduring than Barbra is that she took RISKS. Some worked, some didn’t, but she’s still here. Babs on the other hand has been doing the safe and predictable for at LEAST 40 some odd years - and yet there’s still very little to show for it. By her own admission, she’s lazy. Cher actually likes doing what she does. Cher can be part of an ensemble; Barbra can not and would not. Cher likes to collaborate; Barbra needs complete control. And you won’t see Cher demanding talk show hosts rearrange their TV sets to highlight their good side. You don’t think people notice those things? Is everyone but die hard Babs stans wrong?
I know, I know, “but that voice! She’s won every major award and then some! She was a superstar at 25! Once in a lifetime talent!” The fact is is that the sales of her book proves that her cultural relevancy has greatly diminished. Dollars-to-doughnuts, Cher’s book will outsell hers.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 22, 2024 5:53 PM |

They offered the role to Winger with the same offer, and she first accepted - then dropped out. As cool as the "shopping mall" looks I'd rather live in Cher's house than Barbra's. But still the shopping mall which was just a cleverly designed and stylized massive storage unit for Barbra's old stage and movie costumes and extra antiques does win a few points.

Both Cher and Babs have questionable taste. They both have over the top homes. Babs has "good taste" (in art/home decor) but it just feels like she bought a book on good taste and followed the directions. When it comes to clothes/hair/make up Babs is a trainwreck.
Cher has the taste levels of a 17 year goth girl shopping at the mall. She really does owe a lot to Bob Mackie for helping to create "Cher". When she's not wearing Mackie, Cher looks like an Armenian hooker. And, her tacky Egyptian houses...shudders.

I just started her memoir last night (first few chapters), and I know this first volume goes up to 1979-80, so I'm curious if she talks about 'ASIB' and Streisand in the book. This casting was taking place in 1974-75.

Not to mention digital audio in the highest quality (FLAC or uncompressed WAV) takes up a ton of space compared to mp3s.

R101, if Streisand and Cher’s fans bases were always gay men, neither would have been a big star because there simply aren’t enough gay men.

Do you validate parking too, r103?

R104 Where did I state that their fanbases had ALWAYS been gay men?
Most of Babs' fans are dead.
Cher still has some current living ones.

R104, ever been to a Streisand concert? 95% hetero, couples and girlfriends with scattered gay men. Streisand is one of the biggest stars, maybe the biggest if you measure by talent and success ever. By 27 years old she was at the top of movies, recording, TV and stage. Here two major stage roles earned her Tony noms and had she chosen she could have stayed on stage as long as she wanted. And she maintained her success for decades expanding into directing, producing, writing and song writing. You really don’t know, do you R104?

James Brolin needs to buy a copy and read it with laughter and tears right in front of his wife. Or better yet, play an audio version aloud in her presence.

Cher is still very much part of pop culture, and considered an icon by not only Boomers and Gen-X, but also Millennials and even Gen Z. Everyone knows her.
Barbra, on the other hand....... That's Boomer-land only.

Jesus Christ....fans are just beserker.
I have many artists that I really like and enjoy, but I don't find it necessary to think they're the most wonderful perfect thing that ever existed.
People are human.
Well, in Babs' case, INhuman...

It’s not a good book. She’s a straightforward storyteller, though not a gifted writer. Her childhood was depressing. Sonny was a controlling asshole from day one, and she learned the hard way, every day.
There is some interesting info. She sang backup or was otherwise witness to some great Phil Spector ‘wall of sound’ recordings with famous artists in the early ‘60s starting when she was just an adolescent.
It’s weird how very famous Sonny and Cher briefly got from “I Got You, Babe.”
Her meeting with Diana Vreeland is well told, as is her first photo session with Richard Avedon.
I did love one anecdote: She was and remains a huge fan of old Hollywood movies. At one party someone asks her, “Would you like to meet Gene Simmons,” and she says, “Oh, yes! I love all her movies!!” She was expecting to meet actress Jean Simmons.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | November 27, 2024 9:05 AM |
Regardless if she's been dead for a long time I'd rather meet Jean Simmons than Gene Simmons too. Gene comes across as a rude pretentious douchebag with his sunglasses, permanent scowl and cheap black pussy hair wig.

Yes, R118, but does she mention her big rivalry with BARBRA?
by Anonymous | reply 120 | November 27, 2024 11:34 AM |
I'm surprised either of them are still alive.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | November 27, 2024 12:31 PM |
She doesn’t spend a lot of time on her affair with Gene Simmons. He was good to her kids, and their affair was a pleasant interlude for both. His persona offstage was nothing like the hissing, growling Kiss persona, and she made it very clear to him she had no interest in the crazy freak aspect of that band.

R121 Barbra’s mother lived to 93 and Cher’s mother lived to 300.

Does she talk about beloved food experiences of the past?
by Anonymous | reply 124 | November 27, 2024 12:41 PM |
Does she mention her friendship with Diana Ross throughout the 60s and 70s which hit the skids in the 80s when Simmons dumped Cher for her friend Diana ?
As a side note, Ross has credited Cher in the past for choosing the iconic cover photo of her 1980 album "diana". Cher told her that photo will sell millions of copies of the album, regardless if the record inside is good or not. (The photo is an out-take from the actual photo shoot, where Ross said she took off her fur coat and wig, stripped off her makeup and had some 'candid shots' done of her for a private collection she wanted. Not sure what happened to the photo shoot of glamorous Ross originally intended for the cover).

This doesn't seem right....Cher's book came out on November 5 (election day). The NYT just published their 'non-fiction best sellers list' for week of December 1, and Cher's book is not even on the list. It's been three weeks, her sales should have been counted and this should be her first or second week on the list.
What's #1 ? 'Melania' - and I'm sure that's because of the election. The book was a notorious flop the month of October when it was released.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | November 27, 2024 12:49 PM |
Cher isn't on the Publisher's Weekly best-seller list (non-fiction) either for the upcoming week. Martha Stewart's new cookbook debuts at the top, following 'Melania'. Maybe Cher will make these lists for week of December 8 ?
As a side note, Streisand released her memoir in 2023 at the same time Cher did this year. She was on the best-seller list by this time last year - behind Matthew Perry's 2022 memoir, and Brittney Spears memoir (those two books kept her out of the top spot). Perry saw a spike in sales from his year old book, as he died a week before Streisand's book was released.

[quote]It's been three weeks, her sales should have been counted and this should be her first or second week on the list.
Maybe she didn't sell that many R126?
by Anonymous | reply 128 | November 27, 2024 12:58 PM |
That's very possible, R128. I'd be shocked since she has done about the same amount of press / media interviews as Barbra has done. I think Barbra sold just under 200,000 copies in her debut week, and landed at the top 3. After that, her sales dropped, but she stayed in the Top 10 for about eight weeks.
Geez, can it be Cher sold less than 200,000 in her first week ? We shall see next week. Maybe her publisher was late getting the data out to the book lists.

What's new to read about Cher? Everyone knows her story. She was Sonny's slave, raised by a beautiful mother, abandoned by a drug addict father, got famous by singing one-half of the insipid I Got You Babe. She's not as interesting or as talented as Streisand, who is a diva bitch bar none.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | November 27, 2024 3:26 PM |
R124, she does, a bit (chilled avocado soup), but nowhere near the extent to which Barbra droned on about food.
However, Cher speaks in similar ways about clothes/jewelry/photos… most of those anecdotes end with, “…that I still have.”
by Anonymous | reply 132 | November 27, 2024 3:33 PM |
Considering Cher was damned near anorexic in the 70s, I didn’t expect too much about food.

Geez, why did it take over a month from release ?
Curious if she released it a year ago (instead of Streisand) competing with the recently dead Matthew Perry and Brittney Spears, if she would hit the top spot - or peak at #3 like Barbra.

Seems to me the only mention of Barbra S was an aside about A Star Is Born — Cher said that some of the stories in the 70s update were based on Cher and Gregory A. She remarked on how great Barbra was in the movie.
