Celebrities who have left X for BlueSky, from Stephen King to Lizzo

Bluesky, the microblogging platform backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has been attracting attention as more high-profile users leave X.

The platform gained more than 700,000 new users in the week following president-elect Donald Trump’s election victory in the US.

Here’s a look at some of the other famous faces now active on Bluesky.

Lizzo

The Grammy Award winner, who hasn’t posted to X since September 2023, recently posted a mirror selfie on Instagram while wearing a white bathrobe. “I hate the internet,” she captioned the post. “Anyways I joined bluesky cus we're leaving toxicity in 2024.”

She also shared the post to her Instagram Stories adding the hashtag #TheGreatMigration.

Stephen King

The King of Horror recently announced he was leaving the platform, as he's been a vocal critic of Trump as well as X owner Elon Musk. “I'm leaving Twitter,” King tweeted, adding that he “tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic.”

“Follow me on Threads, if you like,” he concluded, although he also has an account on BlueSky.

Ben Stiller

The actor didn’t make any grand announcement about leaving X but posted twice about his account on BlueSky, redirecting his 5.3 million followers to follow him there. His second post was to reconfirm the account was indeed his: “Red Hour is real me”.

George Takei

The actor most well-known for his role in the Star Trek franchise has been vocal about his dislike of Trump as well as Musk. Although he hasn’t quit X just yet, he recently told his 3.1 million followers on the platform to “join me over where the skies are blue” with a link to his BlueSky account.

Gabrielle Union

The Bring It On actress announced she was leaving the social media site in a post. “Platforms like X were founded on authentic connections, true engagement and creative expression, all anchored in respect for user privacy and trust,” Union wrote on Friday in a post she captioned: “End of an era.”

“Yet with the recent and upcoming changes to the terms of service – and the return of volatile figures – I find myself at a crossroads, facing a direction I can no longer fully support.”

However, she urged her 4.2 million followers to find her on other platforms, such as Instagram, Threads and BlueSky.

Barbra Streisand

The EGOT winner, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, announced she was leaving the platform on Friday. “Effective immediately, any comments I post will be on Bluesky,” she tweeted to her more than 820,000 followers. She also used the hashtag #TwitterExodus.

The Emmy-winning actress and Abbott Elementary star appears to have deactivated her X account and has instead switched over to Bluesky writing “Hello again” on the platform.

Don Lemon

The American news anchor not only announced his departure from the platform, but also deactivated his account.

“I have loved connecting with all of you on Twitter and then on X for all of these years, but it’s time for me to leave the platform,” he said. “I once believed that it was a place for honest debate and discussion, transparency and free speech, but I now feel it does not serve that purpose.”

He also redirected his followers to find him on other social sites such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and BlueSky.

Guillermo del Toro

The Mexican filmmaker told his 2.4 million followers on the platform on November 11 that his account would “stay mostly unused” but that he might still “drop in on occasion”. His post also redirected to his BlueSky account where he claims he could be found there “more and more” before he wished everyone to stay well.

You waited too long to close shop.

by Anonymousreply 1November 17, 2024 9:40 AM

This is awesome. Let’s teach Corky all about the power of the network effect.

by Anonymousreply 2November 17, 2024 10:25 AM

I am creating a mirror site on Bluesky that I didn't on Tribel.

It is interesting but Bluesky has a thread format like Datalounge.

I like it.

by Anonymousreply 3November 17, 2024 10:25 AM

BlueSky is already censoring people over uncontroversial political views, i.e. sex and gender.

by Anonymousreply 4November 17, 2024 10:59 AM

I'll support Jack Dorsey because he's hot!

Elon Musk is a disgusting TROLL.

Bluesky has been adding a million people a day. The exodus is real.

by Anonymousreply 7November 17, 2024 11:53 AM

Blew chew, gals. Getcha blew chew…

by Anonymousreply 8November 17, 2024 12:06 PM

Meh. Dorsey is a self- interested billionaire like the rest. Maybe we need to stop relying on social media so much. Look where it’s gotten us. This shitty site included.

by Anonymousreply 9November 17, 2024 12:17 PM

Link, r4? I've read Threads is doing it.

Feel free to leave, asshole.

by Anonymousreply 11November 17, 2024 12:22 PM

Re R4 and censorship, BlueSky gives you (the user) settings to adjust and there are various community moderation tools. Far as I know nobody on BlueSky is getting zapped altogether for saying “MAGA!” or whatever… but there are ways to block such posters from your view. And more overtly hate speech or vicious personal attacks or illegal material will get a user terminated, as it should.

"As far as you know".

Well accounts are getting censored, especially women involved in the current legal case due to be resolved this month in the UK about sex and gender.

It's all very well blocking anyone you don't want to see but coordinated groups of people are trying to censor those with views they disagree.

Not hate speech, not targeted attacks against individuals, but people discussing the clash between sex based rights and gender identity.

This is of course how Twitter operated for years which peaked with Babylon Bee being banned for its tweet about Rachel Levine.

by Anonymousreply 13November 17, 2024 1:37 PM

If I don't want to see Laura Loomer on Bluesky, I block her. I don't engage. That's what's pissing off the MAGAs. We just block them, instead of engaging them. I choose who I see, rather than an algorithm choosing for me. And, with the recent study released about how X went full MAGA in July 2024, I am all for mass blocking from lists created by another user. So far, I have gained 600 followers since the election, all accounts with real people behind them. The engagement and content are far superior to X, at least since Musk took over. WaPo is over there and other big accounts are moving because they know that real people are on Bluesky and not Russian, Chinese and Iranian bots and trolls.

by Anonymousreply 14November 17, 2024 1:49 PM

"WaPo is over there and other big accounts are moving because they know that real people are on Bluesky and not Russian, Chinese and Iranian bots and trolls."

Wonder if it's dawning on whatever's still sitting there trolling the libs on Xitter, that their fun has peaked and it's pretty much over.

by Anonymousreply 15November 17, 2024 2:04 PM

[quote] This is of course how Twitter operated for years

Which was so, so, so much better than Musk's version. That's what people are reacting.

If users still want Musk's free speech paradise, they're welcome to it.

Of course it doesn't work that way though. Like a neighbourhood, community, school, bar, etc. You actually need good, normal people to be the large majority. It turns to shit otherwise and all you'll have left are the dregs.

That's why the right wingers are now moving over too despite mass blocking.

by Anonymousreply 16November 17, 2024 3:40 PM

I’ve never had a problem on Twitter because I mostly discuss science. I have found a lot of friends on there but a lot of people are leaving. Elon has a lot of totalitarianism friends and he seems to be attracted to that sort of thing so I will leave as well. I got jobs from twitter it’s sad. I will download my data

by Anonymousreply 17November 17, 2024 4:00 PM

These celebrities Re self important clowns. Didnt they get the message after the election that nobody cares what they say or do?

This is just a virtue signal. They'll come back when they realize nobody gonna follow them to bluesky or even knows or cares what the hell that even is

by Anonymousreply 18November 17, 2024 5:50 PM

I wonder if the percentage of Americans leaving will make a blip on a global platform with 100s of millions of users all over the world. What do you think? I mean does he need America if he has India and most of Asia?

If it takes off good. It should be pointed out though this is about the fifth mass exodus that is "going to kill twitter" since Musk decided to wreck the place.

by Anonymousreply 22November 17, 2024 6:33 PM

He got in on legacy at Penn. So brilliant. Did it all himself.

by Anonymousreply 23November 17, 2024 6:37 PM

Twitter is not really that global. Meta rules along with home market platforms. The Brazil ban didn't help either.

I didn't know how marginal Twitter is on the world market. No wonder Musk challenged Zuckerberg to a cage match.

by Anonymousreply 25November 17, 2024 7:22 PM

It’ll be interesting to see how much bigger BlueSky got just this weekend, when numbers become known. I bet at least 20%.

by Anonymousreply 26November 17, 2024 7:30 PM

What evidence do you have for your contention, r18? How closely have you been following this?

There's a huge Xodus of all sorts non-celeberities from X -- serious people involved in all aspects of politics, the sciences, policy think tanks, the media, law, and more -- and their followers are following them. Follower losses on X are mirrored by gains on Blue Sky. Even a German soccer (St. Pauli) team quit X. More will follow.

The Guardian has stopped using X altogether and NPR left over a year ago. You might think the Guarian is no big loss, but it's one of the few publications that doesn't engage in "access journalism" like so many US media outlets.

I do wonder if X will go the way of Truth Social.

by Anonymousreply 29November 17, 2024 8:11 PM

The Guardian has had minimal engagement with most of its tweets promoting its stories, with the exception of the clickbait opinion pieces.

They recently had a gold standard community note with their "there is no two tier policing in Britain" article... which linked to all their previous articles about two tier policing in Britain.

And the groups of people you refer to R29 largely exist in an echo chamber.

by Anonymousreply 30November 17, 2024 8:21 PM

The only person I was sad to see go was Rufus Wainwright.

by Anonymousreply 31November 17, 2024 8:26 PM

I think X will either keep marching or merge with Truth Social.

I was one who moved to BS. Until I found out that it was founded by Libertarians founded it, Steve Bannon was part of that, and now as of October, he is in an investment firm that purchased a stake in BS. I deleted my account once I learned that. I swear to gawd, they’re trying to round up all the liberals in once place so they can make their master list of “public enemies” who are a threat to “national security”. And Tulsi will use the NSA for this purpose too.

I have no where left to go for news of SM. Even here, I cannot believe how RW it’s become.

by Anonymousreply 32November 17, 2024 8:28 PM

What's interesting for those high profile accounts is how quickly they are rebuilding their follower base.

That's always been what locked them to Twitter, but now they're adding followers in mere hours which took years to build originally.

They're also claiming they're seeing much more real engagement because their posts aren't subject to an algorithm.

by Anonymousreply 33November 17, 2024 8:30 PM

I just joined. The first person I followed was Mark Hamill.

by Anonymousreply 34November 17, 2024 8:46 PM

[QUOTE]And the groups of people you refer to [R29] largely exist in an echo chamber.

Imagine that r30! Intelligent, informed people want to engage with each other and have substantive conversations about current topics without getting attacked or threatened.

If you believe they exist in an echo chamber provided by Blue Sky, what would you call Truth Social? An open forum for scintillating and civilized discourse where both sides share and learn from each other? Kumbaya!

by Anonymousreply 35November 17, 2024 8:47 PM

I've never used Truth Social but I imagine it's full of people who are convinced they morally superior, right about every issue and who don't like to be challenged or hear other viewpoints.

I imagine being told what you want to hear all the time is very rewarding.

by Anonymousreply 36November 17, 2024 8:55 PM

R32 I'll say the same thing here I said to you when you posted this on the other thread:

Steve Bannon was never an owner or even involved with BlueSky. A friend of his was an early investor back when Jack Dorsey was still heading up the project, but there was a giant schism a few years ago and Dorsey walked away from BS and sided with Musk and X.

It was originally planned in partnership with Twitter in 2019, but when Musk bought it in 2022, they broke away, not wanting anything to do with X or Musk, and that's when Dorsey dipped and Graber was brought in as CEO.

Stop repeating this lie despite being corrected.

by Anonymousreply 38November 17, 2024 9:37 PM

Fuck Twitter!!!

I hope Elon Musk gets destroyed.

I agree with Lizzo.

Leave the toxicity of 2024 behind.

That includes Twitter, MAGATS, Donald Trump, and everyone that voted for him.

Good riddance to all of them. They are out of my life.

by Anonymousreply 39November 17, 2024 10:24 PM

R37, and I’ll say the same thing I said to you — *regardless* of which version of the Bannon story is correct, Bannon is at a minimum “loosely” tied to BlueSky! He was friends with people who founded it, IF your version is accurate. He supposedly has money in Bankcorp LLC which invested $15 mil this October 2024, THAT is what I read. Perhaps the writer was wrong. But stop calling me a liar. Maybe I made a mistake, but calling people a liar does not help.

Do you deny how dangerous Steve Bannon is to this country? Even if my story (which I DID read from a journalist, maybe their source was wrong?!??) is incorrect, he has multiple strings tied to it, however loosely. He’s a Traitor, and people should just know he may be affiliated and make their own choice.

In my opinion, ALL the Tech Bros have proven they are a threat to America now. Which one isn’t a Traitor on some level? I’ll wait. I trust not one of them. People should know that what happened at X could happen again — and make their own choice.

by Anonymousreply 40November 17, 2024 11:51 PM

R37, here is a version aligned (I believe) with what you read. I’d have to dig to find where I read it. If I screwed it up, I apologize. That’s all I can say. I still think it’s terrifying that ANY of these freaks are tied to that platform (and I misremembered the LLC name, my bad again).

by Anonymousreply 43November 18, 2024 12:52 AM

Didn’t all the bleeding heart liberals all do this, again then typically like one herd of lemmings, 1-2 years ago to some different new platform around the time Twitter became X? Does anybody have an individual mind of their own anymore out there??

by Anonymousreply 44November 18, 2024 2:24 AM

R44, not sure who you’re talking to. But I was never on X, had an account in 2018 just to read articles that came up here. Then I started going on there in July. Had COVID for weeks and weeks, wanted to canvas but couldn’t. So instead I tried to do some activist work on SM, particularly X. I had many conversations (and arguments) with MAGATS where I genuinely heard them out and listened, and I told them what we needed them to help America meet this moment.

And for that? I was literally stalked by multiple Schnatzis, one of whom managed to actually hack me and get all my personal ID. I had to call my bank, call all credit bureaus, install fraud alerts, and I filed two types of reports with the FBI.

So I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. People are trying to talk democracy, and they literally come for you on a criminal level. But then you blame the victim? Okay. All I see is that ALL sm is for the RW, and they get made that the left leave and so they follow them. Because they enjoy stalking and terrorizing, *especially* minorities.

by Anonymousreply 45November 18, 2024 2:31 AM

Is r44 doxable? When will the manna of heaven deliver the deserved hand/head slap?

by Anonymousreply 46November 18, 2024 4:13 AM

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who has made an effort to dump that awful site.

by Anonymousreply 47November 18, 2024 5:56 AM

Threads doesn’t allow porn, not sure what blueskys policy is. Twitter/X had the “pussy in bio” porn bots that would turn up on random accounts.

Why does the idiot upthread think he might be a good guy?

Isn't Bannon a remarkably wonderful individual who hugely avows Leninist philosophy and the destruction of world order repeatedly on his podcasts?

Why?

Plus, he adds to the anarchy by personally disavowing hygiene, as Bannon always has by not bathing or cleaning his nether regions. He stinks from a distance plus.
