I understand that this was a big reason why it lost the Tony.
I was so disappointed with the music when the OBC CD was released. I didn't even bother to go see the show after that, and I'd liked the novel a lot.
For the sake of the audience, the movie(s) should've cut any song not sung by the two leads.

Wicked, and its fans, are the very definition of "basic".
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 15, 2024 6:38 PM |
Mamma Mia is basic but people love the songs. They’re good songs. A musical needs to have good music.

It’s not ALW or Les Mis…
But at least it has some good songs… “Dancing Through Life,” “Popular,” “Defying Gravity,” and “As Long As Your Mine.”
But the songs are mostly filler.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 15, 2024 8:49 PM |
The only songs I remember are Defying Gravity, Popular and I'm Not That Girl., which for me is the standout.

Thank Goodness is a great sequence. What is This Feeling is a jam.

My partner and I hated the songs so much we left at intermission. It was just screeching to discordant notes.

That's because Stephen Schwartz is a fine lyricist, but he leaves A LOT to be desired as a composer let alone melodist.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 15, 2024 10:48 PM |
But his lyrics suck too.
In the clip at OP it sounds like you could replace "the Wizard" with "Jesus" and it's be indistinguishable from Christian music.

Wicked is the new Cats -fun to trash and an easy mark. BUT, it's not a bad show. It is a perfectly entertaining evening out, with and interesting story (way better than the boring novel). Should it have become the global phenomenon that it is? No. Just timing, I guess. All the Tween girls kept it going. And going... The score is fine. A few good songs along with workable numbers that keep the plot moving. I haven't seen or heard anything from the film beyond the trailers. I predict a flop. Not because the source material is bad, but because the crass commercial decision to milk it into two films will inevitably do a disservice to that material. There isn't enough "there" there for two, full films. A standard movie adaptation, with a new song for the Oscar nod and a lot of trimming to the score/book would work infinitely better. As it is, the length is going to point out and emphasize all of the show's flaws.

Yes, R9, I should've qualified that. I guess I meant that, provided he has the right collaborator to spur him on, he can write very well. I'm thinking of the best of his Disney work with Alan Menken. But left to his own devices, he regresses to the most platitudinous shlock.

I think the second film will flop. The first will do great. They are almost hiding the fact it's a two parter to the general audience.

They ARE hiding the fact that it is 2 parts... it's gonna backfire... ACt 1 is much better than act 2
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 15, 2024 11:33 PM |
Wicked would be understandable as a two parter if it was 90 minutes
Part 1 is two and a half. hours
I think the problem is when you put someone like John M Chu in charge who has his head so far up his own ass he can't even make a passable evening out under two hours

Wicked was completely unmemorable. The show and the music are at best mediocre. It was only elevated by Chenowith and Menzel in the original cast. I can't imagine people sitting through the movie.

Defying Gravity is unlistenable.

I HATED the stage production. It was torture waiting for it to end.
But, a relative I love very much is crazy about the show.
So, I'm going back to see the movie. Who knows? I might have a positive reaction to it.
The advance reviews are, well, I'm gonna use THAT word- raves.

The only enjoyable music in the whole show is the fifteen-second "Wiz-o-Mania" sequence in the middle of "One Short Day" that's supposed to be a pastiche of music from the Golden Age of Broadway.

I couldn't get through the book 20 yrs ago. Not sure I need this movie. Even tho Ariana Grande starved herself for it.

I saw Wicked decades ago in LA. I have never had any yearning to see it again.
To put it the way my (a decade older and a musician) boss put it when he and his wife saw it recently: it seems like it's geared toward teenagers. And I agree with him. It's not really groundbreaking or anything I'd ever see again.
I would never pay to see this again, either in stage or movie form. Also, both leads in the film are off-putting: one is anorexic and a plastic surgery model, the other wants to make it all about her and her race.
It's a big no all around.

I liked it ok the first time. The 2nd time the Fiery character was new to me..I just couldnt remember him from my first attendance. It is a good story. I like Changed for good and Defying gravity...I hate One fine day in the Emerald city. I guess i love the conection to The Wizard of Oz movie that i hold dear to my heart. But ive always advised friends to go see a different show unless they familiarised themselves with Wickeds music first. Its not great on first listen. But the movie looks lavish and fun and it will bring me back to the cinema for the first time since covid.

I did not like "Wicked," the musical on Broadway. It seemed like show written for 12-year old girls.
I don't plan to see the movie.

I don't recall when I saw the show on Broadway, but it was after Chenowith and Menzel left.
I remember liking the opening number, but it became increasingly excruciating as the show went on.
It got to the point that I had to bolt at intermission.
I can't imagine sitting through a movie version.

I didn’t really understand the show. If TWWOTW is just misunderstood not evil, why was she such a cunt to Dorothy?

It famously lost the Tony to Avenue Q which was far more inventive and staged a serious underdog campaign. I agree that the music isn’t very good. They gave the musical a fairy tale ending which is fine I guess but overall the book was far more interesting (and weird) although I’ll admit it lost steam toward the end.

A good showtune for me is one that can translate easily to other styles.
This is Wicked's shop stopper for me. Less range, more emotion please.
Cynthia Erivo performed I Couldn't Be Happier at this concert. Mario Cantone performed Wonderful and Gavin Creel (RIP xx) performed As Long As You're Mine. The annoying tranny from Glee did Popular.

The two leads have been showing up at every event possible over the past year wearing pink and green. I’m so sick of seeing them and the film hasn't even come out yet.
