It’s esteemed as a classic, or it’s a popular hit. Whatever, it’s overrated.

The Shining is a terrible film, a ponderous bore and critics did not like it when it was released.
I don't remember anyone really loving it at the time, I can't believe anyone likes it.

[quote]Out of Africa, one of the most overrated movies to ever exist
The Academy in the 80s and early 90s really did enjoy the luscious historical dramas.
Chariots Of Fire, Ghandi, Out of Africa, Amadeus, The Last Emperor, Driving Miss Daisy, Dances With Wolves.

Forrest Gump.

Best Picture Academy Award Winner "Crash."
It only got the nod because Ernest Borgnine and other old farts in Hollywood were pissed "Brokeback Mountain" was in contention for best picture.

R13 beat me to it. Dammit!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 14, 2024 9:49 PM |
I think The Shining is kind of magnificent and very creepy.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 14, 2024 9:55 PM |
I don't like treacle unless it's populist Frank Capra level. Big budget, "luscious historical dramas", and epic war dramas, always fail when they have treacle, or camp. I walked out of The English Patient, for example.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 14, 2024 10:00 PM |
I was going to say Crash but then I thought about it. It hasn’t held up. You barely see it on cable, or hear about Gen z streaming it. It’s lost all cultural currency. While the film that should have actually won, Brokeback, is permanently a part of the cultural zeitgeist.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 14, 2024 10:03 PM |
I don't think Saltburn should be on the list. It's a really divisive film, and even those who adore the movie think of it more as entertaining trash than actual art.
From the list, I picked ET because I've always found the character creepy and off-putting. But the real answer is the ponderous bore that is Jeanne Dielman.

Titanic is dreck that’s somewhat salvaged by some great special effects
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 14, 2024 10:28 PM |
Forrest Gump
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 14, 2024 10:30 PM |
Forrest Gump, though I did vote for Titanic. I thought some of the special effects were terrible (the passengers strolling on the decks) and the story from after the ship hit the iceberg was ludicrous.
Movies like Out Of Africa and The English Patient aren't for everyone. Out Of Africa isn't at all overrated. What makes a very good movie instead of an all-time classic is Robert Redford. Totally miscast.

There's nothing more heinous on OP's list that Frozen.
I'd say Mother!, Roma, The Revenant, Inherent Vice, Poor Things, The Favourite, Licorice Pizza, and especially The Irishman and were all really horrible and overrated.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 14, 2024 10:57 PM |
The English Patient
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 14, 2024 10:59 PM |
OP, that’s a pretty unusual list you’ve got there. *It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? Frozen? Saltburn?* I don’t think anyone’s really talking about these films, much less calling them "overrated."
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 14, 2024 11:17 PM |
Anything with Leonardo DiCrapio in it.

"It's Mad, Mad, Mad, Etc." Over-blown, over-played, excruciating slapstick, with Ethel Merman yowling like Shelley Winters!
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 14, 2024 11:26 PM |
Titanic and Avatar. I've never seen them and never will. "But they're good movies!" I'm sure they are but the more likely anything is marketed and hyped the less interest I have in it.

R33, yes, Mad Mad World is all that, I agree. I don’t get how it ended up on a list of ‘overrated’ movies when it’s not really even ‘rated’ these days.

Avatar is interesting as it's a film that was absolutely huge but has no presence since. It has no memes. No-one says "remember when we saw Avatar?" No-one says "remember that actor from Avatar?". Or "remember that scene from Avatar?".
It's so completely forgettable it's like a lesson in how to make a forgettable film.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 15, 2024 1:27 AM |
If they made Mad Mad etc World today it'd be a franchise. Every couple of years a new "Mad" would be added, and Brad and Clooney would return to race around the globe in more exotic locals with a rotating assortment of stand-up comics in character roles and like The Rock

Yes, I agree, and it seems like that's true of nearly every "best film" winner of the last 20 years.

2001, A Space Odyssey.
Come to think of it, just about any Kubrick movie.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | November 15, 2024 1:57 AM |
Avatar is one of those films that overly relies on its spectacularness but a weak storyline. It has no heart. It was cool seeing it in 3D. In retrospect it is just a big Hollywood flick of cutting edge technology. It’s like one big video game with an above average in story narrative.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 15, 2024 2:01 AM |
R45 Ask anyone about Avatar's "narrative" and they'll not be able to answer. I'm yet to meet anyone who's seen it more than once.

I have not seen 1/2 these films and I have no interest in seeing Titanic or Saltburn or It's a Mad, Mad,Mad World.
Vivien Leigh is the only good thing about the Gone with the 😴

R37. Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel are favorites of mine. Certainly not among the greatest movies ever, but charming nonetheless.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | November 15, 2024 2:35 AM |
It's a Mad, Mad,Mad World is a fun madcap movie which is given a much higher significance than it's worth primarily for all the star power. I see it as 3 hours of mostly cameos. It's easily the most overrated film listed by OP.

The Lord of the Rings...just so long and boring and fan boy-y
