I wasn’t alive and I genuinely believe he was a great President. some of his accomplishments changed America forever and made it a breed place, but LBJ.
Johnson had great ideas and believed in equality and justice, but he was also a terrible bully, physically as well as verbally, and he treated people around him like vassals, was vulgar, opportunistic, transactional, and held a grudge better than almost anyone.
I think some of the broad affection for Lady Bird was based on the fact everyone around them, and even the wider public, knew she must have been a saint to put up with him and his personality.
I’d also say, though he is a saint among Presidents, Jimmy Carter had an oppositionally strident, verging on holier-than-thou, personality and his ability to forgive and forget in furtherance of a common cause with establishment Democrats doomed his Presidency and made him much less effective as the Chief Executive. If he could have been able to allow himself to take counsel from people he felt had done him wrong in intra-party primary fighting, he would have gotten a lot more of his agenda done.

[QUOTE] I wasn’t alive, but LBJ.
[QUOTE] Jimmy Carter
Given the thread title, your first answer doesn’t apply. So you’re choosing Jimmy Carter, R13, over Ronald Reagan who, President or not, was one of the biggest assholes who ever lived?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 14, 2024 4:54 PM |
You could tell George W had a good heart besides the pillaging the Middle East for oil lol. And they all do some version of international war crimes. Repubs are just in your face it about it.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 14, 2024 4:54 PM |
Obviously Dubya. And fuck the media for normalizing this war criminal. He was always a smirking chimp frat boy asshole.

Huh?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 14, 2024 5:00 PM |
I thought W was an idiot, but not an asshole.
Clinton is an asshole. Obama’s a little too impressed with himself for my taste. Biden fucked us over with his stubborn hubris.
Nixon strikes me as more pathetic than asshole.

Wake up and smell the coffee. Just because he's friends with the Obamas and is playful with Michelle - he's not TRANSFORMED into a good guy.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 14, 2024 5:02 PM |
R15, to channel LBJ, go fuck yourself.
Many, if not most, people on DataLounge were alive during the Johnson administration.
Johnson was my choice, I only mentioned Carter because while he’s better than most recent Presidents, even he had his personality defects, defects which much more severely effected the success in furthering his agenda in office then any President since maybe Hoover.

I liked Ronald Regan when I was a child. He had a grandfatherly persona. I attended a Reagan rally with my father in the fall of 1980.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 14, 2024 5:21 PM |
My first grade class voted for ReAgen in a landslide in our mock 1984 class election. All of us little kids liked him and thought he was just a step below Santa Claus.

Do certain Americans living, working, and/or traveling abroad still feel the need to apologize for incumbent presidents? This was a thing during the tenure of George W. Bush. I remember buying a sweater around 2003-2004, and sewn on the inside was a "hidden" label saying (in French) "We are sorry our president is an idiot. We did not vote for him." Meant to be tongue-in-cheek, of course, but some Americans took it seriously enough back then that they pretended to be Canadian. There was no social media at the time, so people did lack that outlet.

R24, in defense of the French clothing company, the U.S. Capitol cafeteria during that period renamed french fries “Freedom Fries” on their menu at the behest of GOP House members in retaliation for France not joining the international coalition in Iraq like the did in Afghanistan a couple of years earlier.

Assholes as people: LBJ, Nixon, Carter, Obama, Trump, Biden
Assholes in office: Nixon, Reagan, W, Trump
Nixon and Trump are the only all-around assholes.

Nixon.

All the Republican presidents I've loathed over the years look positively Churchillian compared to Trump.

R30, I’ve often said that the best thing that ever happened for George W. Bush’s legacy was the election of Donald Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 14, 2024 8:05 PM |
Gerald Ford for pardoning asshole runner-up "Tricky Dick."
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 14, 2024 8:52 PM |
It’s really such a silly question. Trump is in a league of his own.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 14, 2024 8:54 PM |
They all do war crimes, sure, and all have their scandals, but the Iraq War was next kevel when you consider that they both knowingly lied about the evidence and intentionally used feelings after 9/11 to invade a country. And there wasn't even a cold war going on, so you can't defend it geopolitically either.

Being a horrible president does not necessarily make them an a-hole. Trump is the only one that fully qualifies. Then Nixon and Reagan.

Trump
Yeah I know it's not supposed to be on the list, but if he can break the rules, so can we. Works both ways.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | November 14, 2024 9:36 PM |
it's SO close among Nixon, Reagan and W, but I believe what was finally revealed two years ago about Nixon gives him the prize.
He interfered with LBJ's Viet Nam negotiations in 1968, which could have ended the Viet Nam War,
to help his chances of winning the 1968 election - which he did.
Thousands more American soldiers died because of it, triple the amount of innocent Viet Nam casualties.
HE wanted to receive credit for winning the VN war - which didn't officially end until 1975.
Trump has been doing the exact same thing with Benny N, who, in return, assisted Trump in "winning" this election....
On a scale of 1 to 10 as far as asshole-ism, I would give Nixon a solid 10! Trump breaks the scale at... I dunno..... 27??

I was a child when Reagan was president so I wasn't aware of how awful he was until many years later.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 15, 2024 9:33 AM |
