This thread is trollery, methinks, but as a matter of fact it is a decent question. Liberals used to fight for education, decent wages, healthcare, and education, and a level playing field for everyone.
Now? Statues and pronouns. Lectures and scolding, mostly about ridiculous nonsense.
Of course, not all of us are obsessed with clickbait causes. But it’s in our wheelhouse enough that the rightwing is able to use it as a stick to beat us with.
Most of us are still moderate progressives. There’s a reason Bernie Sanders failed to launch. (OTOH, most republicans these days seem to be extremists.) I suspect the callout culture scolding is a product of social media. It’s easier to seek clout over your non-binary status being insulted than it is about kids in Baltimore having no community centers to go to for sports and socializing.
Whatever the cause of it was, the question is, how do we separate ourselves from the stink of poseur social-media progressivism?
A few years ago on Thanksgiving, a singer I liked and followed, Nikko Case (who often sings with The New Pornographers) posted one of those inevitable holiday screeds about how the celebration is actually of the slaughter of native peoples, imperialism, white supremacy, factory farming, blah blah.
I replied to her saying that Thanksgiving is one of the most beloved American holidays and there really wasn’t much point in chastising people for these wrongs that happened hundreds of years ago. I said the constant lecturing and shaming, making people feel bad on one of the few days they can feel good, is a great way to have people tune you out and even push back against your agenda.
She actually replied to me, hurled every insult she could think of at me, and blocked me.
