Why has Democratic progressivism become so weird?

In past generations, liberals used to fight for things like women’s right to vote, ending Jim Crow/civil rights, equal pay for women, abortion rights, even gay marriage.

In recent years, most of the activism seems to be around these niche issues like gender identity and pronouns, which race is allowed to wear which hairstyle, which group owns which word and which group is not allowed to say it, etc. Things which don’t have any real bearing on anyone’s life.

I’m not sure how we got here but I see a vicious cycle. Liberals fight hard for important rights, then the extremists go too far into these absurd issues and piss off normal people, and then the right pushes back and takes away the things that actually matter and then we’ll have to fight for these things all over again.

by Anonymousreply 100November 15, 2024 4:17 PM

Oh good. Another Trump thread.

by Anonymousreply 1November 13, 2024 9:08 PM

No R1. It’s a serious question.

by Anonymousreply 2November 13, 2024 9:09 PM

Postmodernism in academia infected intellectual culture overall.

by Anonymousreply 3November 13, 2024 9:17 PM

Since the Progressive Era, the history of the US has been marked by breif periods of liberal success followed by decades of conservative backlash.

Conservatives are backlashing so much that they've forgotten what they're lashing back against.

It doesn't matter if Progressivism is weird or not weird. Right wingers will freak out.

by Anonymousreply 4November 13, 2024 9:22 PM

You're dumb OP.

Back in the day, the Left championed "Ms." instead of "Miss" which blew up the Eagle Forum bitches minds.

Right wingers (like yourself) griped about "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" about a decade ago.

Now nobody bats an eyelash over those words.

by Anonymousreply 5November 13, 2024 9:24 PM

The left used to be MORE radical and dangerous with actual violence during protests OP. Now it's 180 and the Right are the ones who are dangerous starting with blowing up abortion clinics in the70's and 80's to blowing up the IRS building Oklahoma, to most of the mass shootings from right gun nuts to a VIOLENT INSURRECTION. So spare me the Left is weird talking point.

by Anonymousreply 6November 13, 2024 9:31 PM

OP, because the Right poisoned the Liberal apple.

There's no need to fight the opposition when you can infiltrate and destroy it from within.

Then you put on the mask of your enemies, make them look horrible and lead the masses to you.

People think the Right is filled with dumb hillbillies. No, it's filled with evil geniuses and they destroyed true liberalism using your dumb asses to do it.

Brilliant.

EVIL!!

But brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 7November 13, 2024 9:31 PM

[quote] Conservatives are backlashing so much that they've forgotten what they're lashing back against.

Both progressives and conservatives can recite by heart the list of things conservatives are backlashing against. What you wrote doesn’t make sense.

by Anonymousreply 8November 13, 2024 9:57 PM

I've also wondered this - why did Gaza and Trans rights and throwing paint on art and BIG OIL become the hot points?

Occupy Wall Street was one of the best things happening - and that just fizzled.

There should be domestic protests about domestic issues that affect EVERYONE. And most of that right now is economic - student loans, rent increases, healthcare, grocery prices.

But no - they tackle issues that no one really cares about. Big Oil is not going to stop overnight. We can't do much to stop the situation in Gaza without Hamas and Israel coming to the same page.

You want to see people fight for something that people CARE about and can change. Instead it's these larger issues that can't be fixed readily - and a protest isn't going to do a damn thing to change it - so it all comes off as performative and attention-seeking behavior than real change.

by Anonymousreply 9November 13, 2024 10:06 PM

The trans issue and other similar issues were not major part of the democrat campaign. The strategy of the extreme right was to magnify those issues and manipulate thempublic as id they were and they are coming for your children, etc. Democracts/progessives have and continue to have a major problem dealing with this strategy though.

by Anonymousreply 10November 13, 2024 10:18 PM

Social media. It's driven everyone nuts. The left is not alone in that as we are witnessing with today's news.

And as has been discussed before, there are specific reasons for some of the craziness. All the gay orgs shifted to trans issues because they didn't want the money to stop coming in. We may not like the T, but their wallets do.

But there is something else. I think some really rich people realized that sending the right into tea party snd then QAnon territory and the Left into fighting over gender and BIPOX and all that means that not only is there no unity between sides, but even within a side there is too much strife to ever focus on the real problems.

Note that all of this craziness and these various movements started after the 2008 financial crisis. The elite could feel peoples anger and that spooked them even if specific movements like Operation Wall Street were too disorganized to do anything.

by Anonymousreply 11November 13, 2024 10:19 PM

Because the progressive left are, generally, upper middle class and above. So they focus in on every injustice and privilege except the obvious one, money.

by Anonymousreply 12November 13, 2024 10:39 PM

R4 since ww2

FDR, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Obama, Biden.

Did I miss anyone? And several of them served more than one term. One served more than 2. Exactly when were these brief periods of liberal dominance and the many much longer periods of conservative rule you spoke of?

by Anonymousreply 13November 13, 2024 10:46 PM

This all started in the universities run by career academics who cosplay as socialists. Camille Paglia had their number years ago.

by Anonymousreply 14November 13, 2024 10:50 PM

[quote] The trans issue and other similar issues were not major part of the democrat campaign.

It’s part of the Democratic platform and the Biden administration began inserting gender-neutral bullshit into official government documentation. Stop with the gaslighting.

One group shouts from an ivory tower, the other from the pulpit.

by Anonymousreply 16November 13, 2024 10:54 PM

This thread is trollery, methinks, but as a matter of fact it is a decent question. Liberals used to fight for education, decent wages, healthcare, and education, and a level playing field for everyone.

Now? Statues and pronouns. Lectures and scolding, mostly about ridiculous nonsense.

Of course, not all of us are obsessed with clickbait causes. But it’s in our wheelhouse enough that the rightwing is able to use it as a stick to beat us with.

Most of us are still moderate progressives. There’s a reason Bernie Sanders failed to launch. (OTOH, most republicans these days seem to be extremists.) I suspect the callout culture scolding is a product of social media. It’s easier to seek clout over your non-binary status being insulted than it is about kids in Baltimore having no community centers to go to for sports and socializing.

Whatever the cause of it was, the question is, how do we separate ourselves from the stink of poseur social-media progressivism?

A few years ago on Thanksgiving, a singer I liked and followed, Nikko Case (who often sings with The New Pornographers) posted one of those inevitable holiday screeds about how the celebration is actually of the slaughter of native peoples, imperialism, white supremacy, factory farming, blah blah.

I replied to her saying that Thanksgiving is one of the most beloved American holidays and there really wasn’t much point in chastising people for these wrongs that happened hundreds of years ago. I said the constant lecturing and shaming, making people feel bad on one of the few days they can feel good, is a great way to have people tune you out and even push back against your agenda.

She actually replied to me, hurled every insult she could think of at me, and blocked me.

by Anonymousreply 17November 13, 2024 10:57 PM

^^^ Neko Case

by Anonymousreply 18November 13, 2024 10:58 PM

R17 It’s like the veganism of belief systems. It thrives on privilege and perceived superiority, and the further one goes into it the more they disconnect with reality. The beliefs become so extreme that you’re essentially isolated to people who think, speak and fart the same way you do.

by Anonymousreply 19November 13, 2024 11:01 PM

[quote] No R1. It’s a serious question.

Then you are a stupid questioner. Democratic progress is based on the belief that someday we will all be equal citizens.

It seems that white people will only give up the ghost after Latinos desert them.

by Anonymousreply 20November 13, 2024 11:03 PM

And r19, a big part of it is lecturing others on their wrongness and therefore their inferiority to you. You’re so much better and purer than they are, and it’s very important for you to rub their noses in it.

Rubbing other peoples’ noses in their inferiority is not a great way to gather support.

And again, most of us in the democratic cause aren’t that way. But we have been labeled that was, and it works.

by Anonymousreply 21November 13, 2024 11:05 PM

^** that way

by Anonymousreply 22November 13, 2024 11:06 PM

[quote]Rubbing other peoples’ noses in their inferiority is not a great way to gather support.

And yet Trump rubs shit in the face of every Latino and somehow that acquire a taste for it.

by Anonymousreply 23November 13, 2024 11:09 PM

R20 Why does this always turn into a white people vs everything else issue? Do you really believe that anyone who question the extremes on the left is a Trump supporter? Jesus!

by Anonymousreply 24November 13, 2024 11:11 PM

R23, are you using whataboutism?

by Anonymousreply 25November 13, 2024 11:11 PM

r3 that's a big part of it.

BTW, their hero Foucault was fucking underage boys in North Africa.

by Anonymousreply 26November 13, 2024 11:15 PM

R10, Democrats didn’t put those issues front and center because they know they alienate regular voters.

Regular voters, however, have memories longer than a campaign cycle, and are aware that Harris is on record for stating approval for sex reassignment surgery for prisoners on the taxpayer’s dime. They know Ketanji Brown Jackson stated she could not state whether individuals were men or women because she was not a biologist - just before going to the Supreme Court.

Voters have been told they are hateful bigots for not wanting males in female sports and that gender ideology does not belong in elementary school. (I am an elementary school teacher and was piled on HERE of all places for stating that it was rather hardcore in my school.)

They have been waiting for someone to listen. Crickets from Democrats - other than shaming.

Well, someone was listening.. Now we’re stuck where, facing another four years of chaos.

And regarding Latino voters since that’s now back in the chat - some of the absolute worst racism I’ve seen regarding Latinos has arisen post-election, and it’s from progressives. Guess who isn’t surprised? Latinos.

Same for the classist garbage floating about people without college degrees: that they’re ignorant, that they shouldn’t be able to vote, etc…

I am from a flyover factory town whose residents have been seeing their livelihoods diminished and their lifestyles denigrated for decades. I didn’t vote for Trump, but in many ways, I get it. I wish more Democrats would get it, too.

by Anonymousreply 27November 13, 2024 11:22 PM

Hijacked by chaos agents and Russian psyops. I’m serious.

by Anonymousreply 28November 13, 2024 11:24 PM

R27 I totally get it. Unfortunately, every time I bring this up to some of my more progressive friends, they get angry at me. Their mentality is simply “the other side is stupid, and they need to see how stupid they are and how right we are.“ As if that’s ever going to work.

by Anonymousreply 29November 13, 2024 11:25 PM

R27 BULLLLLSSSSSSHHHHHHIIIIIIITTTTTTTTT.

The Right is more radical and crazy than the Left could ever be at this moment. The Right has the entire R part. The Left is not in control of the D party. STFU

by Anonymousreply 30November 13, 2024 11:28 PM

[Quote] And yet Trump rubs shit in the face of every Latino and somehow that acquire a taste for it.

Well, not exactly, although I kind of see what you mean. He said that one judge couldn’t preside over his case because he was Latino. But that was a long time ago.

He has limited his bigotry lately to illegal immigrants. (I’m sorry, I’m not going to call them “undocumented” — so ridiculous.) And that seems to be fine with Latinos who are citizens and can vote. They like his supposed toughness and macho, and they’re very conservative on many issues.

by Anonymousreply 31November 13, 2024 11:31 PM

R27 The people who hate the flyover dipshits the most are REPUBLICANS. Name a GODDAMN economic thing they’ve done for those dumbfucks? You can’t. 100 years of economics data shows Democrats are better for the economy BY FAR in EVERY measure than Republicans. Every single Republican president from Hoover to Trump has seen a recession or depression start under their watch.

No, it is ALL about culture and those flyover dipshits HATE us gays and THAT is why they vote AGAINST their economic interests. Then they cry that their shitty towns are dead. FUCK THEM. They get what they vote for. Pronouns, trans, gays, aren’t hurting them. It ANNOYS them, so they cut off their nose to spite their faces. Again, FUCK THEM.

by Anonymousreply 32November 13, 2024 11:31 PM

Macho? Tough? That cry baby bitch?

Good. I will pull up a lawn chair as they ALL are deported. And it ain’t gonna just be the ILLEGAL ones. Byeeeeeeeeeee.

by Anonymousreply 33November 13, 2024 11:33 PM

The Right wing are the ones who make fun of, look down on, call names to Democrats. That BORIS narrative about “liberals look down on us” is a bunch of BS. It is the exact opposite. Gays defending them are fucking idiots. They hate us every bit as much as they hate trans or whatever the fuck they hate. They’re bitter bitches. That’s why they vote Republican.

by Anonymousreply 34November 13, 2024 11:35 PM

[Quote] Macho? Tough? That cry baby bitch?

by Anonymousreply 35November 13, 2024 11:39 PM

Thanks for listening, r32. Your tired response is boilerplate despite the all caps expletives. But you needed to get it out and tell all the blue collar workers whose industries have been sent overseas, thanks in no small part to Democrats under Clinton, that they can fuck off. Again, they, like a large number of Latinos, know what you think of them, which makes casting their vote that much easier.

by Anonymousreply 36November 13, 2024 11:42 PM

R36 ok Boris

by Anonymousreply 37November 13, 2024 11:44 PM

To be fair R32, there are also well-off liberals who don’t understand the economic pain of the working class, and simply pontificate on how stupid these people are for not realizing how great the economy is because stock prices are up.

My mother thinks that because she watches MSNBC for 8-12 hours a day she’s “informed.” She’s a world expert, despite the fact that she’s never even traveled outside the US and has no desire to do so. She lives in a good neighborhood, her house is fully paid off, she’s financially secure, and she does her grocery shopping at a high-end grocery store. And she just doesn’t understand how these people don’t see how great the economy is because the number say so.

by Anonymousreply 38November 13, 2024 11:45 PM

I live in West Hollywood - progressives have the majority on the city council and they are ruining the city.

We had a chance to take moderates to the majority but the blind sheep voted in the same group....it happens everywhere...

by Anonymousreply 39November 13, 2024 11:46 PM

R36 NAFTA was negotiated by GHW Bush and Republicans overwhelmingly supported it, dipshit.

by Anonymousreply 40November 13, 2024 11:50 PM

R38 we had the best economy in the world. Inflation has super high under Reagan, we had a deep recession, we recovered but by the time he won a landslide re-election inflation was still higher than it is now. He was credited with things getting better.

Good luck with next term. He’ll crash the economy.

by Anonymousreply 41November 13, 2024 11:55 PM

It’s funny how everyone says the poor or working class don’t feel Democrats talk to them or understand them or whatever BS Heritage talking point is used. Blacks ARE poor and working class yet vote for Democrats overwhelmingly as did Latinas. I wonder what the differences is? Hmmmm. We can dance around this BS all day but racism, misogyny, and homophobia play a huge role in how the Right votes. I personally know many who admitted they didn’t vote for her because she was a she, and not White. Add to that the steady stream of right wing propaganda they get from church, radio, TV, online and there you have it.

It’s ok. All of us making excuses for these pieces of shit will get to see the economy crash and burn around them and watch them still blame illegals, POC, gays, trans, whatever the fuck they are always fearful of.

Funny, the Right didn’t use the migrant caravan BS this time because everyone caught on it and it was no longer effective. So they turned to Venezuelan gangs!!!!!!!!!!!! Right on cue ALL right wing media started spreading it. I haven’t heard one goddamn story about them since the election.

by Anonymousreply 42November 14, 2024 12:14 AM

OP is a concern troll.

by Anonymousreply 43November 14, 2024 12:17 AM

OP it happened because self-identified Democrats became wealthier and more educated, so economic justice no longer had appeal. Rather, social justice could be advocated for because the FOUNDATION OF MODERN SOCIAL JUSTICE IS AN EMBRACE OF CAPITALISM.

The perfect symbol of this? Corporate DEI.

by Anonymousreply 44November 14, 2024 12:19 AM

R37, that was tired years ago. It’s lazy, empty, and ineffective.

R43, same.

Yes, r40, and look how Jeb Bush fared when he ran for the top office. The Republican figures from that era are now reviled by most Republican voters nearly as much as Democrats.

And the signature is all Clinton’s.

I get that the replies here are emotionally charged. It’s an unsettling time. If you want to proceed with a Democratic Party as it is, that is your choice. Maybe that tack will work in two years. It didn’t in 2024.

by Anonymousreply 45November 14, 2024 12:23 AM

R43, I think you’re right. Notice how this thread got dropped right when all of Trump’s preposterous nominations were being announced.

For one, I decided to hijack the trollery and have an actual convo about it. We need to hash this out. Yes inflation was part of it, but many, many undecideds have negative views of liberals now.

by Anonymousreply 46November 14, 2024 12:25 AM

People have become fucking weird in both sides but at least the left aren’t trying g to destroy peoples lives just be freaks

by Anonymousreply 47November 14, 2024 12:34 AM

R45 go cry some more you bitch. NAFTA was negotiated by Republicans and agreed-upon by three nations. Clinton was handed that agreement and it just was not common to undo an agreement by three nations. I can’t help it if voters are too fucking stupid to realize Republicans sold them out, keep selling them out, while they get poorer. But most everyone at the time thought free trade was going to bring about a lot of prosperity. It wasn’t Clinton’s idea and he would’ve would’ve never dreamt it had it not laid at his feet. Don’t try to get out of it by now saying the Republicans think differently now. That is absolute horseshit and you know it. Republicans have done nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing for working class people for 40 fucking years. Well actually, let’s make that 100 fucking years. You can’t name a goddamn thing they’ve done and neither can they. They seem to love billionaires when they’re on their side and cry elitism when they are on our side. Why? Because it has nothing to do with economics or they’d all be Democrats. It’s all about racism, misogyny and homophobia. We all know. Blacks are the poor and working class and they vote overwhelmingly Democratic because they know that is where their best bet is.

It’s OK cupcake because we’re about to see yet another recession and probably a depression start under yet another Republican president. And what will they have next.? Oh I’ll think of something. It’ll be trans or some other bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 48November 14, 2024 12:35 AM

Legacy media normalized Trump, and wanted him to win.

Perception is everything. Trump just repeats how he is this great businessman when the exact opposite is true, yet the media goes right along with it. He inherited $400 million, and all his father’s best people, yet couldn’t turn that into success. His economy was middling at best, yet he just kept saying it was the best ever with no pushback from the media.

We won’t be gaslighted in this thread by Trump defenders.

Don’t worry. Our country is about to be turned into something none of you can fathom. All due to our persistent racism, sexism, and homophobia. Prices will be sky high in 4 months if he gets his tariffs yet the rubes will make every fucking excuse in the book for him all because the mean ol libruls supposedly make fun of them, when it’s Republicans who hate them more than anyone. We just reelected a 34 time felon adjudicated rapist as president because we can’t handle the thought of a woman or a woman of color being president. We will get what we deserve and it will be very painful. We are about to see real pain shared by all. Pain and chaos we cannot conceive of. Enjoy! You earned it!

by Anonymousreply 49November 14, 2024 12:46 AM

This guy explains perfectly what we are all about to go through economically and it ain’t going to be pretty. Companies are already saying they’re cutting bonuses, and jacking up prices 15-20% so they can buy as much product before the tariffs start. And then the real fun will begin! Many of you are about to experience being poor for the very first time in your life and you’re not prepared.

[quote]if he gets his tariffs

Just a quick point R49 - there's no "if" he gets his tariffs. For Trump to implement tariffs he has announced he just needs to sign an executive order. One of many executive orders he will sign in the first few days of his presidency. Trump has been talking about tariffs for 30+ years. There's no "if" about it. It's happening.

And as we all know Trump lied about how tariffs work - tariffs are paid by the US importer at the port of entry. Not by the exporter (Chinese or other country). The tariffs will lead to inflation and eventually to job losses. Like you say - it's going to be very painful. For example; most tech is going to rise by a flat 20%. Does anyone think Apple won't pass that cost onto consumers?

by Anonymousreply 51November 14, 2024 1:21 AM

R51 Companies will lay off workers, crime will skyrocket, prices will get higher and higher, big corp will buy up real estate so they can own us. All plans Elon has openly spoken about.

Yes, non of us know exactly how bad it’s going to get, but it is going to be worse than we’ve ever seen since the Great Depression. What will greatly add to the pain is the crypto bros plan on making the dollar worthless, moving shit into bitcoin, and stealing our money. We will see the first trillionaires by this time next year. With that much money, good luck ever getting once ounce of power for the people in this country ever again. We’ll be their slaves. Hope Trump voters are happy and hate will put food on the table.

Why has Republican conservatism gone off the rails? That’s the question. Those progressives are by and large not Democrats. They actually hate Democrats and feel they are Republican lite. 🤣

However, maga is Republican conservatism. It’s the whole party. Lock stock and Barron.

Two radical progressives lost their primaries because Democrats take out their trash. Republicans make her Education Secretary.

The thing is we had one of the best, most sound economies of our time. Fortune magazine did a deep dive into Trump’s vs Biden’s economy and Biden’s was by far better. Inflation was worldwide, but Trump’s previous policies caused a lot of the inflation we saw in ‘22. They spelled it out very clearly, as has Mark Cuban. And how much of that inflation was price gouging? Kroger admitted to it. All major chicken, meat, poultry producers are Trumpers.

The thing is they also point out we were on the cusp of another American economic renaissance unlike anything we’ve seen since FDR’s New Deal kicked fully in, according to them and hundreds of economists. One that would have lasted well over a decade. A deep, profound, all encompassing economy benefiting all sectors and all groups. We were almost there. One election away. And my god did we blow it. That’s what sickens me.

by Anonymousreply 64November 14, 2024 3:19 AM

R61 Oh shut the fuck up, Boris. The Right were actual pedos, being busted daily. They taught their kids hate and fear and prejudice. The ultra left, who aren’t even Democrats, aren’t nearly as fucking crazy as maga who are the Republican Party. No amount of your bullshit will change that.

by Anonymousreply 65November 14, 2024 3:21 AM

Anyone in this thread trying to make it seem Democrats are crazy or weird is deflecting from Trump nominating Lauren “feel ma tits and I’ll jack you off at a kids show” Boebert for Education Sec and Matt “I likes em young, 17, with a coke twist” Gaetz as Attorney fucking General. Then we can talk what he nominated Putin’s favorite Russian asset Tulsi and Fox’s not even weekday anchor for.

We need to get away from personalities and focus on the Truths that they speak. Healthcare for all! Not “Medicaid for all”. If that makes since.

Focus on the truths, not the personalities and policies.

If a Republican gets elected - blame Liberals.

If a Democrat gets elected and doesn't do what I want that person to do - blame Liberals.

If something is happening culturally that I find annoying - blame Liberals.

If something isn't happening culturally that I liked - blame Liberals.

R74 - You forgot - If the Republicans take away rights - blame liberals for not putting it into federal law first.

Literally what some Gen Z people have been saying about Roe. Nevermind that they tried - nevermind that Republicans blocked it at every chance.

by Anonymousreply 75November 14, 2024 3:38 PM

[quote] If the Republicans take away rights - blame liberals for not putting it into federal law first.

That’s important to note that people were given a fifty year window of opportunity to add abortion to the Constitution before Roe inevitably failed. Half a century. The time was squandered while people promoted the fantasy that Roe would last forever.

by Anonymousreply 76November 14, 2024 3:48 PM

Republicans need to have an enemy/enemies.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall they turned their sights on Liberals. They controlled the narrative and along came Murdoch. Trump controlled the narrative and Murdoch pushed the agenda.

Cable killed Democracy and needed 24/7 entertainment. Reality Show Programming eventually turned serious American Politics into a spectator sport. The winner: Big Business advertising sales. Murdoch sold America a defective party that attacked our country and he got us to like it. All based on Trump's lies.

And that is where we are.

R76 - They DID try. Look it up.

This is exactly what I'm talking about - progressives complaining about stuff and not knowing the history or even BOTHER to look up the efforts.

So according to R76 - Democrats are to blame - not the Republicans who have lied and abused this issue for votes for 40 years and who actually DID take away the rights.

Blame the victim mentality. Well - of course your house was broken into and all of your stuff was stolen - you didn't have ENOUGH locks. The thieves aren't to blame - it's YOUR fault.

by Anonymousreply 78November 14, 2024 4:09 PM

Yes it’s someone else’s fault.

by Anonymousreply 79November 14, 2024 4:10 PM

It's interesting that the pro-Palestine people interrupted Kamala's rallies but never Trumps.

The trans activists throw glitter on Dan Savage but never at the lobby of Fox News.

The left attacks its allies and leaves its real enemy in peace.

by Anonymousreply 80November 14, 2024 4:14 PM

The tax bill could give the Democrats an opportunity to go populist. They are going to sell off our future - the debt, the climate, Social Security, the inflation - so they can help out billionaires like Elon and deport people.

This is an economic protest, not a virtuous social movement. The Tea Party did this with incredible effectiveness to convince Americans that they shouldn’t have health insurance.

by Anonymousreply 81November 14, 2024 4:15 PM

The Democrats - or at least the Biden Administration - delivered real populist policies and results to the working class for four years. Pro-union. Pro-consumer.

But no one cares because groceries went up and there were crime stories on the news.

by Anonymousreply 82November 14, 2024 4:18 PM

R80 we had a story of an entire community being terrified and upset because 4 trucks with maga signs drive down their street yesterday.

An invasion I think they called it..

Show up at a trump rally and pull that shit those people would be still be kicking ass. Do that at a Harris rally and they will ask you to please be quiet because I am speaking.

Dems and liberals are more sensitive not so big on kicking maga ass. Glitter? Now you are on to something,.

by Anonymousreply 83November 14, 2024 4:20 PM

OP: navel-gazing. I think humanity might have peaked in 2010. We had a good run: Suffrage, abortion rights, gay marriage, ... and then came trans, pronouns and more bullshit that doesn't help anyone. I remember in 2016 when on Tumblr, there was a hate campaign anti-Clinton because her "pussy hats" were not trans-inclusive. There were wide campaigns to abolish female genital mutilation. People who ran international campaigns were also defamed as transphobic. The list continues.

This bullshit cost Clinton the election - I am absolutely sure of it. Identity politics made things worse for nearly everyone in the following years because they paired well with a corporate capitalist mindset.

Globally, we have one problem which is climate change. Everything else is solvable. We should build new nuclear plants instead of the fetishization of fossil fuels in the US (or that of renewables which don't work as well in the EU, resulting in a giant carbon footprint and massive greenwashing) that is making the oil-exporting countries richter and feeds the influence of a specific kind of Islam and many wars. Instead, we're micromanaging the shit out of what everyone should say or think, busy sucking the fun out of every movie, every show and every book.

tl; dr: Why? Gratitude, building a sense of community and trying to actively improve the lives of people elsewhere would have been the way to go, but we didn't follow it.

by Anonymousreply 84November 14, 2024 4:25 PM

R84 is just an ordinary, normal American who thinks that acknowledging the existence and dignity of trans people brought on the end of civilization and the onset of Fascism.

by Anonymousreply 85November 14, 2024 4:51 PM

Well Trans rights do run up against women's rights sometimes, and Trans rights activists should admit that occasionally and at least acknowledge there is sometimes an issue. Don't just wish all issues into the cornfield and declare them forbidden topics.

But that aside, I really would love to see an economic populist idea that anybody imagines would win enough support to get through Congress, especially the upcoming Congress. Can a minimum wage increase even get through, the bare minimum of economic populism? Or will the populism just be the usual big tax cut for rich fucks?

by Anonymousreply 86November 14, 2024 4:57 PM

[quote] They DID try. Look it up.

Newsflash, r78. They didn’t accomplish it. Trying is not the same as getting it done. People had fifty years to make it happen and they failed to get the job done. Whining about obstacles doesn’t negate that.

by Anonymousreply 87November 14, 2024 4:57 PM

[quote] But no one cares because groceries went up and there were crime stories on the news.

Personal safety and being able to afford food understandably and deservedly trump other things.

by Anonymousreply 88November 14, 2024 5:00 PM

R87 - Newsflash - passing legislation isn't as easy as you think. First you said they didn't try - then I show you that they tried - and then it's not good enough because they didn't succeed.

You're a real asshole. The other side LIED - the justices said it was a decided decision, then reversed themselves for no reason.

Republicans are liars and don't play by the rules - trying to get anything passed the past 30 years has been almost impossible. Why - because of Republicans. That's the answer.

That's always the answer. Stop blaming Democrats - and get out and vote.

by Anonymousreply 89November 14, 2024 5:04 PM

[quote] First you said they didn't try - then I show you that they tried - and then it's not good enough because they didn't succeed.

False. I didn’t first say they didn’t try. I stated “people were given a fifty year window of opportunity to add abortion to the Constitution before Roe inevitably failed.” You said tried.

It’s still true that they had fifty years to do it and they didn’t. Like Miranda Priestly would say, the excuses don’t matter.

by Anonymousreply 90November 14, 2024 5:17 PM

It's Republicans like OP who obsess over trans people and pronouns. Republicans run anti-trans commercials. They shriek about pronouns. OP is just looking for an excuse to attack trans people

by Anonymousreply 91November 14, 2024 5:36 PM

R90 - You make it sounds like it was within their control and they could just wave a wand and pass it. Excuses for one's personal behavior is one thing - but when you have groups of people and rules and laws stopping you, then your simple statements fall flat.

You've proven you're a simple thinker and just bitch about anything you don't like. YOU are exactly the types we're talking about on this thread.

by Anonymousreply 92November 14, 2024 5:55 PM

R91

[quote]OP is just looking for an excuse to attack trans people

Random thought. If you are one of the letters in the alphabet soup community and you’re pushing your batshit insane agendas so hard that you are causing pushback that is harming the other letters, maybe you deserve to get attacked.

by Anonymousreply 93November 14, 2024 6:23 PM

R93 - exactly - particularly when you just dismiss all women's rights in the process. THAT is the major point - they're just supposed to accept males in sports, just accept that all language regarding ob/gyn issues is changed from women to 'those who get pregnant'.

And for what? To not offend an extremely small percentage of the population?

So you want to piss off half the population to protect the feelings of a few thousand? THAT is what is fucked up. And they believe we're awful for even speaking any opposition or even talking back at all.

by Anonymousreply 94November 14, 2024 6:33 PM

[quote]It's interesting that the pro-Palestine people interrupted Kamala's rallies but never Trumps.

Because they knew they'd get their asses kicked.

by Anonymousreply 95November 14, 2024 7:21 PM

r82, and in Las Vegas we are still waiting for those criminals, drug dealers and ILLEGALS to terrorize our communities.

by Anonymousreply 96November 14, 2024 7:25 PM

R96 The illegals terrorize me all the time in Vegas. Snapping those cards with the naked women on them.

by Anonymousreply 97November 14, 2024 7:35 PM

That is legal.

The DA in Las Vegas is TV Judge Jackie Glass' husband.

by Anonymousreply 98November 14, 2024 7:44 PM

[quote]Why has Democratic progressivism become so weird?

You mean like this? Being fitted for hijabs during the Women's March in Washington protesting the threat to women's rights Trump's first administration posed? Yeah, it gets weird sometimes.
