I can’t remember which rightwinger it was who said that the ideal government was one which was small enough to be strangled with bare hands, but that is very much what Trump will leave behind: a weakened state, distrusted by its current allies and unable to mount a political or diplomatic defence against its enemies.

I like America too much to get any real satisfaction out of the thought of the long-term damage this will do though: every government office headed by a lunatic and/or a traitor. It’s going to be a sad and chaotic four years.

I suspect CNN is right r115. Trump wants another criminal in charge of the Department of Justice (ha, wonder when they'll change that name) to quash any and all investigations into an administration that fully intends to be the most corrupt in history. Why is anybody surprised by these cabinet choices? The United States is now a dictatorship. Dictators DO NOT WANT people who think to be in positions of power. They're dangerous to the dictator. And in Gaetz case, if you have some dirt on them (which Trump surely does) you dangle that carrot over their head to keep them compliant.
When you surround yourself with buffoons (Gaetz, Gabbard, the Faux News guy, etc), who will rubber stamp everything you do, it makes your job easier and makes you look brilliant in comparison (or at least Trump thinks so).

There are no more conservatives in the Republican party. They have all left. Need proof? Look at what they did to the national debt. Republican administrations have racked up debt every time they take over for many decades; it's not particularly a new thing. Then, the economy falters and Dems take back the White House, fix the economy, it thrives, then the country votes in another fucking Republican who coasts for a year or so on the great economy, claiming it's because of them, while starting the process all over again, usually through idiotic tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Rinse and repeat.
The Republicans greatest talent has been for spinning the lie that "Dems wreck the economy; Republicans are fiscally prudent and save the economy" when the exact opposite is true.
It's as "good" as Trump convincing the yahoos that he's a God loving, brillliant businessman and executive.

Yesterday, the Republican-led House Ethics Committee canceled today's planned vote on whether to release the Gaetz ethics report to the public.
And new Senate majority leader John Thune said recess appointments may have to be used for Trump's nominees if there is Democratic "obstruction."

Here is my prediction. Gaetz will sail into the office of Attorney General, stop mental masturbating that some Repugs still have ethics and will stop hm.
Once it becomes official and Trump takes power, he will fire off half a dozen investigation on Trump hate list.
Here is the rub, the good little lawyers at the DOJ will not actually evidence of any crime. They will put up a little fight at first, but they will bend the knee eventually. They will put up the weakest case possible and it will get slapped down from court to court. There will be years of fighting. And even if it does get to a trial it will still be up to a jury. Trump will not succeed with this.
The bad news is, it's going to cost people on his list a fortune to defend themselves and make their life miserable which IS THE POINT of the Trump administration. Most of these people are not millionaires. Jack Smith, and all the other like Fani Willis, who were involved in a case against him will be the first targets. Then Political targets like Nancy Pelosi, Eric Swalwell, even Biden.
Finally he will try to shut down the media, like MSNBC, CNN, Morning Joe. But they have a lot of cash to deal with that.
This is all you need to know when you have a question which way the Republican party will go. Say it with me, and repeat: [bold] Cruelty Is The Point with Republicans, Cruelty Is The Point with Republicans, Cruelty Is The Point with Republicans.

It's usually difficult to beat a multiple-term Senator. Having said that, Susan Collins saw a huge collapse in support in her last election. In 2014 she had won in Maine by about 37 points; in 2020 her winning margin dropped to under 9 points. Is she beatable in 2026? She could be at risk of dropping further if Trump's popularity is down by 2026 and the Democrats run a strong candidate against her.
Maine is arguably the most unusual state in New England, largely because it is predominantly rural, with only a few population centers.
1) Not only does it keep electing "moderate" Republican Susan Collins, but its other Senator is an Independent -- Angus King (although he caucuses with the Democrats, like Bernie Sanders).
2) Since Trump came on the scene, Maine has split its Electoral Votes between the Democrats & Republicans in 2016, 2020 & 2024.

Lawyer Joel Leppard is set to do multiple network TV interviews Monday as he pushes for the release of the House Ethics report, and he gave Playbook a sneak preview last night.
His clients, he said, told investigators they attended more than five and as many as 10 “sex parties” with Gaetz during his first term in the House. At those parties, they testified, there were “group sex situations” and illegal drugs were present. One of Leppard’s clients told investigators she witnessed Gaetz “having sex with her friend,” who was underage at the time, against what she recalled as some sort of game table, according to Leppard."

In normal times, the senators, especially those from the president's party, would give the president the option to withdraw the nomination & avoid embarrassment. Since Trump has no shame, & he wants to lord over "his" senators the power of his MAGA goons, I think Trump would want to force a vote. I'm so conflicted in wanting Gaetz to get the post because it will bite them all in the ass--hard. Most of the GOP hates him and they're being put in an impossible pickle: vote against him and agitate Trump; telegraph that he's a non-starter, forcing Trump to do a recess appointment, which will bring it's own hell; or vote him in and demonstrate what utter cucks they are and willing to sacrifice any power they have in order to making a pedophile, reviled asshole AG.
On the other hand....WTF! These fucking nutcases are running the country. They can't appoint him, Kennedy, Gabbard, or the Fox News guy with the white supremacy tattoos.
Well, since this country is completely fucked, might as well be entertained by the orchestra as the Titanic slowly sinks into the depths. So, sure! Appoint all these psychos and let's have one last laugh before the shooting begins.

All I keep hearing in my head the past two weeks, with all of these compromised, inexperienced suck-up appointments and talk of retribution measures (Junior Mint, today), vengeance, high tariffs, and the gutting of basic government departments (FBI, ATF, etc) is Tim Walz's simple question from just a few months ago: who asked for ANY of this?
Trump is in office to get the border under control, deport the illegal criminal migrants, get some handles on the urban crime issues, and keep prices LOW (good luck on that!) - that's it, that's the program he was elected to do. None of the rest of the crap was anywhere near the top of the list of concerns of most Americans.

R405, the federal government can't do most of the things that people want it to do. It can't radically restructure the economy. And no one can deal with the border because illegal immigration is just part of it. Our appetite for illegal drugs is endless, and no one is sealing a border through which $19 to $29 billion dollars flows every year.

Bingo! He's always been all about vengeance and retribution on all of his perceived "enemies". He'll have about two years worth of time to get a head start on this, and you know he'll come charging out of the gate foaming at the mouth on Day 1, in January.
I feel slightly ill at the prospect of what he has planned, but also fascinated at the same time to witness this trainwreck. Even more interesting, the reactions of many swing voter Americans who voted for him, thinking his 2nd term would be different from the 1st and that he was actually running to get stuff done. The dawning realization that he's out to destroy our government and weaponize if totally for his own ends, will be sad yet satisfying to watch in real time.

Musk and Vivek and others can dance around, but the fact is, at the end of the day Trump is the POTUS and neither he nor his Chief of staff and closest long time advisers are going to let Musk and Vivek run around thinking they have the power to do things in Trump's name. by Anonymous | reply 482 | November 21, 2024 9:31 PM |
R469/R471, while Paxton is arguably even more loathsome than Gaetz, he also has even more political baggage. A couple of years ago, all SIX of his handpicked deputy AGs narked on him to the FBI after finding out he was accepting bribes along with screwing the wife of a powerful real estate developer. He'd be even less likely to pass Senate muster than Gaetz. The top option now is apparently Missouri's AG.
Also, Paxton is odious, but he's not stupid: he knows full well that Trump cabinet picks tend to have exceptionally short shelf lives. Since there's no way he could work as both Texas AG and for the US, he's likely staying put. AFAIK he was never even considered, and for that reason.
by Anonymous | reply 483 | November 21, 2024 9:38 PM |

Hate to burst everyone's bubble, but Matt Gaetz CAN RETURN to Congress if he wants. I think AOC pointed this out too. Basically he resigned his current job in Congress to take the AG job. But he was already elected to serve in 2025. So just like trump, all his investigations go a way by resigning this term, but he can start anew in 2025 if he so choose.

The House Ethics Committee meets again on the 11th of December to decide what to do with the report - they have NOT made a final decision yet.
With Gaetz returning to the House and no longer tied to Trump, why wouldn’t they vote to release it? They only need one vote.
by Anonymous | reply 507 | November 22, 2024 3:47 AM |
According to my local news station which did a "verify" story today on whether Gaetz could return to the House, the sources they consulted said that since he had officially resigned from the House, the option of saying "whoops" was off the table, and De Santis would be legally obligated to hold a special election. Gaetz could, in theory, run again for his seat, but he also said in his resignation that he would NOT serve in the House again. That clip would probably be used in any kind of political race in his district as an ad.

by Anonymous | reply 510 | November 22, 2024 4:59 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 511 | November 22, 2024 5:08 AM |
I read somewhere he does not have to run again, all he has to do is petition someone in power for a re-reinstatement.
by Anonymous | reply 512 | November 22, 2024 6:07 AM |
Why, R512? He only resigned from THIS (the 118th) Congress. The NEW (119th) Congress - the one to which he was elected - begins in January.
by Anonymous | reply 513 | November 22, 2024 12:54 PM |
Each numbered Congress is a distinct, self-contained, unit. Thus, for example, if an article of impeachment had not been sent to the Senate in the Congress it which it was passed, the new Congress would have to act anew respecting that particular article for the Senate to have any jurisdiction.
by Anonymous | reply 514 | November 22, 2024 2:34 PM |
On further thought, that passed article of impeachment may even be a nullity if it's not disposed of by the Senate during that particular Congress.
by Anonymous | reply 515 | November 22, 2024 3:39 PM |
R508 if he goes back to Congress, the Ethics Report will be a big issue. So he is finish.

Trump will find him something when things settle down. There is no senate confirmation process for Trump's personal staff in the White House. He could make Gaetz an Advisor to the President. What a total mess that would be. Gaetz would disrupt everything.

R517 Agreed. Remember, Trump cares nothing about norms, rules or laws. He will find some position despite all his baggage.

I'm not so sure a new Congress has jurisdiction to release a report from a prior Congress.

Gaetz says that he will NOT return to Congress. Instead he will make videos on Cameo.

r523, so typically of the Trumpers, always cashing in on the short term grift opportunity. Gotta hand it to them, they are so predictable.
At least he's not selling gold sneakers (yet).

Gross, who the fuck would pay that child molester for videos
by Anonymous | reply 525 | November 22, 2024 11:45 PM |
$500 for a Cameo from that asshole? And yet some idiots will pay that.

This just in: reporting this evening is the Trump & Co want to gut the DOJ, replacing it with staff who will make it their top priority to investigate the Election Fraud of 2020. Not kidding, that's what I just saw.
Did ANYONE ask for this? A re-hashing of the fake election claims from four years ago? How come they aren't investigating fraud from this current election cycle hmm?
This is what he had in store for Gaetz, and what he has lined up for Barbie Bondi.

^ I'm all for that!

Watch...they'll "prove" election fraud for 2020....which would then make Trumpf ineligible to be president in 2025 since you can only be elected president twice.

Gaetz has been moved quietly to a new parish.

R522: So what's the story?

And how the Emmy vote was rigged against this ultimate victim.

Do we think it's Gaetz for Governor 2026??

Trump just nominated "Doctor" Seb Gorka as Director of Counterrorism. Yuck, that guy is nuts

No. The president is elected by the electors. The official electors appointed by the states in 2020 elected Biden. Proving election fraud in any state will have no effect on that.

Forget Matt Goetz, Dataloungers. He's over. He's finished. It's over for Matt Gaetz.

Trump may give Gaetz an administration job that doesn’t require Senate approval. Similar to what Bannon had.

I don't believe Bannon ever was on the White House payroll.

R541, I was thinking that too. He could always put him on the WH staff al la Bannon. They President's personal staff doesn't require Senate confirmation. However. They still have to go through the FBI background check.

by Anonymous | reply 545 | November 25, 2024 1:59 PM |
R545 - Yea - I don't get it - DUMP is so conscious of appearances that having a real live gargoyle as his advisor was an odd choice. Plus, Bannon looks dirty and I doubt his personal/oral hygiene are up to basic standards. That may be why he wears layers and layers of clothing - all the time.

[quote] The group, which was co-founded five years ago by JD Vance, sprouted from an informal set of dinners into a powerful coalition of Republican donors who have given more than $100 million to Rockbridge projects since 2019, according to a person close to the group, helping lead Silicon Valley’s march to the right. For Rockbridge, Mr. Vance’s election as vice president was a crowning achievement — and a tantalizing opportunity to wield new national influence. But Rockbridge has largely kept its activities stealthy, mindful of how groups of wealthy conservatives like the Koch Network have drawn attacks from both liberal detractors and Republican wannabes. As caravans of black S.U.V.s shuttled in the billionaires from their private jets last week, members of the Rockbridge roster could be spotted around the hotel: Rebekah Mercer, the scion of one of the most prolific Republican donor families, greeted well-wishers in the lobby. Working the happy-hour scene at the hotel bar were two close friends of Elon Musk’s — Ken Howery and Luke Nosek, whose time with Mr. Musk at PayPal made them megawealthy themselves.

Bannon's body is probably covered with ulcers and oozing sores. Ugh!
R548 when they say PayPal, I think Peter Theil. Thanks for the article. I wondered WEHT The Mercers. It seemed like they disappeared when Mueller got involved.
