Canceling Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc

Many of us are looking to cancel these services.

My question is, if I have purchased a movie on Prime or Netflix and cancel the service, do I lose the movie as well? Even though I paid for it?

I searched, but didn’t find another thread.

Anyone else canceling their streaming? What are you moving to?

How do you buy movies on Netflix? For Amazon no.

I'm steeling myself to cancel Amazon Prime. I'm weak. I have Paramount as a bolt-on to Amazon and will probably pick that up on its own.

by Anonymousreply 3November 12, 2024 8:53 PM

Amazon prime is different than the others you mentioned.

Hulu yes you lose em

Netflix yes you lose em

Ops subscription isn’t buying a movie.

On Netflix, you're not "buying" - you're renting. You rent for a one-time only viewing. You should still be able to access it as long as you are within the renting guidelines (there is a time limit on how long you have to watch after starting).

On Amazon Prime, I'd download it to be safe, but you should still have access if you cancel your Prime subscription. It's just like buying any movie or tv show on Amazon. This should be true whether you bought a movie that was free to stream with the subscription or only available for purchase.

Even though DL is a source of all arcane knowledge, you should read the guidelines on Amazon Prime itself, not DL threads.

I f you bought a movie for download, which Netflix doesn't do, then you've bought a license to replay the movie on that platform, likely in perpetuity. If technology moves on or the platform goes tits up, your license to replay is essentially worthless unless you downloaded the whole file and can play it on another player.

Yes, it's complicated because they make more money that way.

I HAD an Amazon Prime account - during that time I purchased an episode of a popular sitcom. That episode is still assigned to my Amazon account (non-prime). Not sure if I can watch it w/o Prime but I don't care. BOZO has enough money and won't get any more of mine.

Nonsense. We are the ultimate authority.

How the hell do you rent movies on Netflix. It’s certainly not on the app.

by Anonymousreply 11November 12, 2024 9:05 PM

R11 it doesn’t.

by Anonymousreply 12November 12, 2024 9:05 PM

You can, r9. Media purchases have nothing to do with your Prime membership.

by Anonymousreply 13November 12, 2024 9:08 PM

I have Prime for the shipping, I buy stuff constantly from Amazon. The video is only a bonus.

by Anonymousreply 14November 12, 2024 9:14 PM

R14 You can pay for just access to Amazon Marketplace, which is less than being a 'prime plus' membership but doesn't include streaming, that you can also pay for itself (I think), but if you're not streaming and shopping you are overpaying.

by Anonymousreply 15November 12, 2024 9:19 PM

There was a story on the Today Show this morning that some streaming services are going to allow people to suspend their membership for 12 weeks or 90 days, in an effort to stop people from cancelling completely.

That would be great except it takes a year or more for a new season to become available and, even at that, they sometimes only drop one episode a week. I binged The Morning Show and Ted Lasso but, once they ended, I cancelled them. I'll re-up with Apple TV+ when the new, full season of TMS is available.

by Anonymousreply 16November 12, 2024 9:23 PM

Bingeing The Morning Show should be outlawed by the Geneva Convention.

by Anonymousreply 17November 12, 2024 9:25 PM

OP, you should still be able to watch any content you’ve purchased if you cancel Prime. You’d just lose access to the free content included with a Prime membership.

For R3 and anyone else who doesn’t want to pay for a Paramount+ membership, apparently there’s a website which has codes every month that give you a free month of Paramount+, just remember to cancel each month before your trial period ends. Just google ‘doctor of credit paramount codes’. I’m not sure if the codes are for the ad-free plan which includes Showtime, or if it’s for the ad-supported Essential plan. I’ll find out when my Paramount subscription expires next week because there’s no way I’m paying $120 a year to renew.

by Anonymousreply 18November 12, 2024 9:32 PM

You get Paramount+ for free with a Walmart+ subscription. That’s only $99, or $49 if you get the half off promotion.

by Anonymousreply 19November 12, 2024 9:39 PM

This is why I buy DVDs of things I really want to keep.
