I saw a reference to British actress Kathy Burke in a recent thread. I wondered if the British version of Will and Grace, Gimme,Gimme,Gimme in which she starred with Tom Dreyfus had made it across the pond?
It had nothing in common with Will and Grace, it was much funnier.

It's nothing like Will and Grace and his name is James Dreyfus.
Are you completely simple?

It had VERY limited showings in the US - I think I saw a few episodes on our local PBS station. Many PBS (Public Broadcasting System) show limited British comedy series weekend evenings - typically the same tired old ones over and over and over:
Vicar of Dibley (although I haven't seen that shown in a long time) Keeping Up Appearances As Time Goes by with Judi Dench - which I never liked and never thought was funny
I really enjoyed Gimme, Gimme, Gimme- but it's not easy to find here or was never promoted or broadcast much.
We don't get most British comedies - just the dramas, detective shows and the period mini-series.

It had nothing to do with Will & Grace and was made first.

Dreyfus was the piano player in Bette Miller's CBS show.

Will and Grace premiered a few months before Gimme Gimme Gimme.
Gimme x 3 was a great series. Vulgar and vile but laugh out loud funny. I had a friend who had a two rescue cats called Elaine and De Mousse.
Jonathan Harvey is a great writer, and Beautiful People is also highly recommended, starring a pre Oscar Olivia Colman.

Most of the humor was based on the fact that he was a little homosexual boy who couldn't act straight if his life depended on it (and it did, because he was an actor); and she, Linda, the joined at the hip kind of fag hag, thought she was the hottest girl in town, while everyone else thought she was too fat and ugly to be even looked at. It was terminally un-PC, so I don't think this would have fared well in the US by the noughties. I could see it having some success in this Trump 2.0 era though, for the exaxt same reason.

She’s a vulgarian!

Also the main gay character had sex (albeit disastrous) and wasn’t a nauseating rich-kid stooge

The "gay media" hated Gimme X 3, something Kathy mentioned when she won a tv award.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 11, 2024 9:35 PM |
r10 Gimme Gimme Gimme and Graham Norton were hated by stuff like the Gay Times back then. They very much wanted to push a 'straight acting' gay man image and were declaring the camp portrayals as damaging to gay men.

The pilot for Gimme Gimme Gimme was filmed a year before Will & Grace.

Gimme Gimme Gimme is hated even more by queer Brits because of the transphobia and James Dreyfus is a HUGE Terf on a crusade against gender-ideology.

Bore off
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 12, 2024 12:52 AM |
The "queers" hate it because it's unapologetically gay. It's written by a gay man, stars a gay actor and has gay themes. That's why the "queers" hate it.

Kathy's accent always seemed over the top for American ears. I can understand what she's saying but it just seemed excessive - like do people really speak like that? It's like cockney on level 11.
I guess the same could be said for some American accents - some Queens accents like Cyndi Lauper and Fran Drescher seem hard to believe until you come across some people in real life who speak that way.

It's not terribly funny to me,. especially compared to Burke's work elsewhere.I've never gotten through an episode. What's Dreyfus done since fading into the woodwork on Bette?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 12, 2024 5:42 AM |
Most British comedy is terrible.

She has a glorious North London accent r17. I seem to remember that she's from Islington. That borough used to have the most unequal income distribution in London, and you'd either talk with a plum in your mouth or like Kathy Burke. I think she may be off Marquis Estate? Council housing!

WTF? Will & Grace OP? Neither show had anything to do with each other and Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie most certainly wasn't the UK version of Will & Grace. Fuck.

And Kathy Burke is a woke moron r14 - so far so equal. A loudmouth who won’t stand up for women’s sex based rights. I can see why you’d approve.

I have all three seasons on DVD. She was a hoot. She was also on Absolutely Fabulous a few times. Dreyfus back in those days was a cutie. Very sexy hair.

R16 is a fucking fool. "Queers", would look at this as one piece in a larger spectrum and wouldn't shit all over it. That doesn't fit your divisive victim narrative, so take your L and try again. Maybe tell the truth next time.

I've seen her in interviews and her normal accent is not nearly as hard as she used in many roles, especially on AbFab. It was hard to even understand some of what she said on that show when she rattled off too fast.

Hilarious. On a par with Kath and Kim.

There was pushback when it originally aired and pushback in the last few years, mainly because of James Dreyfus's personal views. And it is offensive on many levels but that's the joke. You're laughing at the racist not the racism. Lots of people can't grasp that.
Kathy Burke described it as pantomime, and it is exactly that.

What are these "Dreyfus's personal views"? Has he revealed himself to be someone we should not like? Frankly, I haven't heard anything about him in many years.

Dreyfus took a stance on antisemitism in the Labour Party as it was becoming a major problem and was one of the few actors to speak out about it.
And on sex/gender Dreyfus has taken a sex realist position and supports female only sports, women only prisons and other standard uncontroversial TERF positions.
He was subject to the most vicious hounding by trans activists and lost his job from the Doctor Who audio books. He recently had a small role in House Of The Dragon despite a campaign against him.

Dreyfus was on an episode of AbFab too - the one with Idris Elba.
God the Gen Z writer at R27 - holy shit. "Living to be offended" comes to mind. Even reading the article and not watching the show - I could see the punchlines in what she's describing.
I may have to watch it on YouTube - only saw a couple of episodes.

R24 it’s the sweary “take your L” troll again 🙄

The jokes about “ethnics” and “lesbians” by Linda are actually making fun of how stupid Linda is. That writer is so literal-minded.

Kathy is nearly 60 and had serious health problems that stopped her working for years. She looks fine.

American here who's never heard of it. I'll check it out on YouTube.
The "gay media" also hated "Men on Film," ignoring the fact that it was a favorite in gay video bars.

I thought Dreyfus was cute when he was on AbFab.
Burke was in a great film when she was starting out called Scrubbers that took place in a girl's borstal.

No matter what you think about trans people, Dreyfus has fucked himself with his obsessive moaning over the topic. He's turned into a pub bore that nobody wants around, and all you can hear is the bitter after the nine zillionth time.
