CNN's data reporter Harry Enten says that Democrats have “no real light at the end of the tunnel"

CNN’s Harry Enten said Monday that Democrats have “no real light at the end of the tunnel.” (Watch the video below.)

In a chat with “News Central” anchor John Berman, Enten, CNN’s senior data reporter, broke down the history-making vulnerability of the Democratic Party after last week’s election. It will likely be one of just a few times in the last 90 years that Democrats don’t hold power in either the White House or any chamber of Congress, he said. What’s more, President Joe Biden has the lowest approval rating of any departing Democratic incumbent since Jimmy Carter in 1980.

“When you make the comparison to Jimmy Carter on popularity, you know that you’re in bad shape,” Enten said.

It all adds up to gloom and doom for a party reeling from Republican Donald Trump’s victory over Democrat Kamala Harris, a Republican flip in the Senate and a likely continuing majority in the House.

“The bottom line is, everywhere you look, the Democrats are in this deep, dark state because they have no heir apparent, the incumbent president’s unpopular, and they hold no levers of power in Washington, most likely come January,” Enten said.

“For Democrats, there’s no real light at the end of the tunnel,” he added.

Enten and Berman mentioned that the party has at times rebounded from weakness fairly quickly, but right now any sliver of optimism is sunk in a pit of despair.

“It’s always darkest before it’s pitch-black, as John McCain once said,” Enten said.

Democrats in the wilderness... This appears to be...

-1st time since 92 cycle with no clear frontrunner for the next Dem nomination

-1st outgoing Dem pres with approval rating south of 50% since 1980.

-Only 6th time in last 90 years where Dems control no levers in federal gov

the democrat party are the paid losers of oligarchs who have a kind enough disposition to agree that peasants should at least have bread and water. there is absolutely zero chance of real economic populism ever being on the ticket in the US and we are a failed state. bernie sanders, who is a moderate centrist by any non completely americanized standard, is considered an extreme radical. unless the party pivots to him like they should have done nearly a decade ago then the democrats are finished completely. i hope everyone on here who ever complained about 'bernie bros' gets anal cancer btw.

by Anonymousreply 2November 11, 2024 7:58 PM

Ouch, R2!

But so true.

by Anonymousreply 3November 11, 2024 8:05 PM

But Bernie Sanders is a communist, a socialist and a Marxist according to maga.

Americans have proven that they deserve everything that is going to happen to them.

by Anonymousreply 4November 11, 2024 8:14 PM

None of this is truly unusual, but the jockying for "Most Breathlessly Scolding Prognosticator" is always a lively one.

It does bring to mind how Bill Clinton came to be President in 1992.

PS- The next Dem President will be a middle of the road white male.

by Anonymousreply 5November 11, 2024 8:16 PM

The worst thing about this week hasn’t been Trump winning, but the reemergence of those Bernie Bros cockroaches from under our collective American dumpster fire. We gotta listen to that shit again? I’d rather endure a Trump rally, at least for its ability to fascinate.

by Anonymousreply 6November 11, 2024 8:17 PM

Weren’t they saying the same thing in 2008 when the Dems had a super majority in the Senate, the House and the presidency? Only it was about the Republicans.

The lesson: CNN likes winners. Like a high school girl who dumps her old friends when the popular crowd gives her an inkling of attention.

They can’t be euthanized soon enough.

by Anonymousreply 7November 11, 2024 8:19 PM

R6 go fuck yourself hillary

by Anonymousreply 8November 11, 2024 8:19 PM

r6 just look at this vile rat. you hate the poor and the working class don't you? it makes you sick to think of an american citizen receiving healthcare, paying their rent, and living a secure and decent life unless they made it through all the elitist gates you worship. doesn't it? so the first democrat in decades to advocate for workers, for the poor, to be serious about going after corporate corruption and exploitation - that's as disgusting as cockroaches to you and even worse than trump. just join the republican party if you haate poor people so much. i really want to beat your fucking ass physically honestly.

by Anonymousreply 9November 11, 2024 8:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 10November 11, 2024 8:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 11November 11, 2024 8:32 PM

Can this Bernie Sanders sounding-creep go away now?

by Anonymousreply 12November 11, 2024 8:39 PM

[quote]Only 6th time in last 90 years where Dems control no levers in federal gov

In other words, it has happened at least six times in 45 election cycles. And he had to ignore the 50-year period during the late 20th century when Democrats controlled the House without interruption.

This guy is an idiot.

We are completely out of power at the moment. That will change in two years' time, probably in the House.

by Anonymousreply 13November 11, 2024 8:49 PM

R10 pathetic response you have no point bitch because you're an elitist fucking pig and i have you pegged to a TEE

by Anonymousreply 14November 11, 2024 8:55 PM

R13 YEAH IT'LL ALL BE FINE IN TWO YEARS let's just ignore the incoming AG who is openly fantasizing about public murders of democrats. let's just assume the incoming fascist party who over and over and over and over and over again has promised they will destroy democracy forever was joking and we can just fix this in the next cycle. if the left isn't willing to get violent and massively organized NOW it's over. it's over. period.

by Anonymousreply 15November 11, 2024 8:57 PM

Maybe the Bernie Bros were correct. Hillary lost…twice. Kamala lost.

by Anonymousreply 16November 11, 2024 8:58 PM

Harry needs to do his reports in the nude, in order to give us some comfort in these dark hours.

by Anonymousreply 17November 11, 2024 9:57 PM

Dems should nominate a middle of the road white man from the South. Biden was from Delaware which is South adjacent.

by Anonymousreply 18November 11, 2024 10:10 PM

Middle of the Road always loses

by Anonymousreply 19November 11, 2024 10:19 PM

Maybe the Dems should actually start standing for single payer medicine, affordable housing, groceries, and child care, while at the same time ridding the streets of homeless and reducing crime.

THAT would be a winning formula

by Anonymousreply 20November 11, 2024 10:20 PM

[quote]r16 = Maybe the Bernie Bros were correct. Hillary lost…twice. Kamala lost.

Bernie would have lost as well.

by Anonymousreply 21November 11, 2024 10:23 PM

What is with the obsession in making it sound like undivided government is oh so rare? Trump came into office the first time with undivided government. Obama had a few years of undivided government. As someone mentioned, Democrats had decades of undivided government.

And people like r15 are too hysterical to talk to right now.

by Anonymousreply 22November 11, 2024 10:34 PM

[quote]R6] just look at this vile rat. you hate the poor and the working class don't you? it makes you sick to think of an american citizen receiving healthcare, paying their rent, and living a secure and decent life unless they made it through all the elitist gates you worship. doesn't it?

This is why. This smug sneering self righteous patting yourself on the back for your so-called moral superiority and “compassion” unless someone disagrees with you then watch out! You are as awful as you think your enemies are you just direct it at different targets.

by Anonymousreply 23November 11, 2024 11:20 PM

R23 So calling an elitist dem a rat is smug and awful but calling bernie supporters cockroaches worse than magas isn't? Clutch your pearls tighter.

by Anonymousreply 24November 11, 2024 11:24 PM

what's smug is telling the poor and the working class to suck it up and calm down and negotiate with a big smile - pretending we don't have any reason to be so angry. fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you

by Anonymousreply 25November 11, 2024 11:25 PM

just wait till tariffs then we'll start killing. a la lanterne

by Anonymousreply 26November 11, 2024 11:26 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't Dems in the same boat 8 years ago when Trump first won and the GOP had both houses of Congress?

by Anonymousreply 27November 11, 2024 11:33 PM

R27 no because he wasn't coming in with project 2025 and a carefully prepared team of neo-reactionary fascists ready to end our government permanently - read curtis yarvin if you want to know what the future is going to be like

Exactly!

We ran two women already, and both lost.

Next time it should be Pete Buttigieg.

Democrats have already took a chance on running a female two times, and failed.

Now we need to run a gay man for President.

by Anonymousreply 30November 12, 2024 2:21 AM

Of course that’s complete nonsense. Two years is an eternity in politics. We need to start the hard work of flipping one or both houses of congress.

I honestly fear for my safety if this happens in the current climate. Look at the “your body, my choice” bullshit happening right now. If Buttigieg had been the nominee, we’d be hearing calls right now for all of us to be interrogated by child trafficking investigators and for a public registry of HIV results. Proud Boys would be marching down Commercial Street in Ptown with their tiki torches.

I had no idea.

Weird that the cable news stats guys on CNN and MSNBC are both gay.

Except that Steve Kornacki doesn't have a boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 38November 12, 2024 3:06 AM

I was molested.

by Anonymousreply 39November 12, 2024 3:07 AM

Here is my prediction. In the first two years, they (maga) will have complete control. Trump could care less about immigrants, gas prices, food prices, the economy. What he cares about is cementing power and making money. He will steamroll legislation that does those two things, possibly replacing all the older conservatives with young Maga judges. Don't be surprised if Aileen Cannon becomes a supreme court judge. Most likely the congress will flip in two years and Trump will blame any failures on his promises on the dem congress.

by Anonymousreply 40November 12, 2024 3:13 AM

[quote] Next time it should be Pete Buttigieg.

Do you understand what "middle of the road" means? A homosexual male is roughly equivalent to a Black female, or roundly-disliked white female, in terms of presumed unelectability.

by Anonymousreply 41November 12, 2024 3:17 AM

[quote] Now we need to run a gay man for President.

Because we love snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?!

by Anonymousreply 42November 12, 2024 3:18 AM

Harry is straight, I believe.

by Anonymousreply 43November 12, 2024 3:18 AM

Trump only cared about staying out of jail. Now with that mission accomplished, the country is going to be run by a bunch right wing ideologues. Trump could give two shits about tanking the economy and the Republican Party with his tariffs and deportations. The oligarchs and their proxies in the Cabinet will check his impulses in order to consolidate their power and keep Republicans in control of the whole shebang. This will be a Trump presidency in name only. Consequently, I’m skeptical that there will be some huge appetite for a blue wave in two years.

by Anonymousreply 44November 12, 2024 3:28 AM

That depends on what the results are. If the economy tanks and there is open rioting, I don’t see that being a winning ticket for Trump Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 45November 12, 2024 3:30 AM

A little historical perspective, folks. If Trump 1.0 was a farce, the updated version is gonna be a tragedy. In our two-party system, aggrieved voters will have nowhere to turn but to the Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 46November 12, 2024 3:35 AM

R43 Then why is is snuggling up with Galen Druke who is definitely gay,

by Anonymousreply 47November 12, 2024 4:36 AM

The re-election of Trump reminded me of nothing so much as this.

by Anonymousreply 48November 12, 2024 7:23 AM

So is he gay or does he claim to be straight? I remember him being way more flamboyant, but I'm assuming he got a memo because he turned it down a couple of notches.

by Anonymousreply 49November 12, 2024 12:27 PM

R44, I agree. But in 2 years Trump becomes a lame duck. Plus people will be sick of him. Dems take over Congress and the Presidency in 4 years. Stay strong.

by Anonymousreply 50November 12, 2024 12:48 PM

This guy works for CNN, the infotainment channel. Harris lost by maybe 2 points. The next Senate map is better. The GOP has no real bench behind Trump.

by Anonymousreply 51November 12, 2024 12:59 PM

Harry is sexy as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 52November 12, 2024 1:25 PM

The next Senate map is better, R51? Please explain.

by Anonymousreply 53November 12, 2024 1:28 PM

R53 I assume he means Democrats have fewer seats to defend.

by Anonymousreply 54November 12, 2024 2:19 PM

r51. Um. You do realize why he picked Vance. He is being groomed as the next maga leader. While everyone is predicting a disastrous four years, if Trump pulls off any sort of win and delivers on his promises, Vance wins the next election. The other thing is, Trump has the house and the senate and the supreme court. How hard do you think it will be for him to change the two terms law? I am pretty sure they also plot on how to keep him president, perhaps by starting a war and then saying we cannot replace a president during war time. This is a party who hold on to power with cold dead hands. They will not let it go and will use the next four years to make sure they do not let it go.

by Anonymousreply 55November 12, 2024 2:28 PM

R53: If you can't figure out what that means or how to answer the question, you shouldn't be commenting on a thread like this.

by Anonymousreply 56November 12, 2024 2:30 PM

Yeah, I don't think the upcoming Senate map is looking very promising.

I don't know. How hard will it be to get two-thirds of both the House AND the Senate to pass an amendment to the Constitution AND then have three-quarters of the state legislatures ratify it?

Unless you're saying the Constitution will no longer be the basis for how the government operates.

Like with any Washington takeover, there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel--in 2 years. The ruling party will overreach and fail. The failures will be amplified by the opposing party, which will take back Congress.

Sotomayor had to hang on two more years.

Dems had better listen to Sen Murphy if they want to be competitive again.

[quote]A few days after the election, he laid out what he thinks went wrong in the election in a thread posted on the social platform X, calling for a “rebuild” of the left. This includes a broadening of the Democratic tent and engaging in “big fights” with elites like billionaires and large corporations. “Real economic populism should be our tent pole,” Murphy said.

[quote]He later expanded on his argument in a memo to other Democrats two weeks later, saying populism is the key to reconnecting with working-class voters whom party has lost. He said part of winning back this group includes changing how Democrats talk about the economics of those in power.

[quote]“There are many factors to winning back the majority of lower income voters, but I am confident that one key element is being more purposeful and transparent in talking about power — why corporations and billionaires have too much, and why we, as Democrats, are the only party that is serious about putting that power back in the hands of workers,” he said.
