Ariana Grande is Jamie Lloyd's 'Evita' revival in her future ?
On a recent podcast hosted by SNL cast member Bowen Yang to promote her new movie 'Wicked', actress/singer Ariana Grande indicated that at this point in her career, she is now looking to return to starring in a stage musical. She debuted on the Broadway stage at the age of 15 in 2008, when she was part of the cast of '13: The Musical' which launched her career as a pop star / actress.
This confession has heated up the rumors that Jamie Lloyd, who has been chosen by Andrew Lloyd Webber to direct a new West End revival of 'Evita' in London this coming summer, has been in talks with Grande in starring as Evita Peron. The plan is to eventually carry the musical to Broadway, as he did with the current revival of 'Sunset Boulevard' and brought over its West End lead actress (known as the coveted 'doubleheader' - something Patti Lupone fought for in her negotiations with 'Sunset Boulevard' in 1993).
Grande didn't give any details on her plans, especially any musicals by name. Yet the speculation was first ignited by theater insiders a month ago when she hosted SNL. Supposedly Lloyd was in the audience, and met her after the show - according to one theater message forum. The two have been 'seen together' in NYC over the past few weeks, and it was said Grande had seen his 'Sunset' revival a few times since it opened on October 20 to rave reviews. Stay tuned...

Title should be "Ariana Grande: Is Jamie Lloyd's 'Evita' revival in her future ?"
Sorry about that.

No way she’s singing Evita on stage night after night. Nicole S would make a good Evita, not Ariana Grande

Unlikely r7. Can’t imagine she’d physically be up for Evita even if as before she only does 6 performances a week. Her obvious eating disorder would cause havoc.

Nicole S needs to fuck off to Christian music and leave us alone

Also — Nicole "SS" Scherzinger did Evita in London and was ALWs protogée at the time.

Grande seems pretty dedicated and disciplined to projects which she signs up for (from the little I can see). I can't imagine Lloyd offering her the role - nor her accepting - if there was any question on whether she 'can do it'. When I saw her on SNL, for some reason my first thought was she would be great in a remake of the EVITA movie (not knowing until this week there were plans to revive the musical). I even posted here in that week's SNL thread. I believe with the right vocal coach and dance instructor she can definitely pull this off - and surprise everyone.

Apparently, while enjoying the success of their 'Sunset Boulevard' revival, and preparing to launch an 'Evita' revival in the Summer, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jamie Lloyd are working on a third project to launch next year - a musical called 'The Illusionist'. They announced this new project (for both The West End and Broadway) was announced last week.

I think Grande's too big for what ALW will pay and the amount of time this will make her unavailable for other projects, especially after WICKED.

No. We want her to make more movies and videos.

Sounds similar to Cher in 1996. She said she refused to accept ALW's offer to replace Betty Buckley on Broadway in 'Sunset Boulevard' because ALW 'couldn't afford' what she asked for (which she felt was fair). And it would take her off the road, promoting her 1996 album "It's A Man's World" and take her focus away from other projects she was involved with at the time.

O offense to Ariana. Evita is not just another role. The depth, the drama, the love/hate.. Ariana is too shallow, and that’s not a diss. That’s her brand. “Thank you, next” playful, obnoxious and extremely shallow.
This role shouldn’t go to just any broadway actor either.
It takes a certain type to pull this off. Madonna did it, but I imagine it was under the heavy hand of intense direction. But she had the “raw materials” meaning that she could pull you in. Eva was captivating, even if all an “act”.

R19 With all due respect, I think the idea of casting the 'right actor / actress' with the talent and vocal skills to be cast in a role is long gone. Every producer and creator - especially Andrew Lloyd Webber - has learned it's "celebrity stunt casting" over stage talent, as he learned 30 years ago.
Glenn Close was an A-List celebrity who played 'Norma Desmond' to sold out houses for the duration of her Broadway run in 1994. Her acting was superb (she had theater experience in her bones), her singing had much to be desired.
Betty Buckley, a celebrated, distinguished theater actress (but not a well known celebrity) takes over, is a phenomenon in both acting and singing the role, and plays to a quarter empty houses during the length of her run when she takes over for Close. The box office goes from black to red.
ALW realizes the 'business' of Broadway in the 90s is star stunt casting (quite different from Broadway in the 70s and 80s) and tries his best to replace Buckley with another 'celebrity' - no matter their acting or vocal talents. If you're a 'name' who can fill a house with tourists, you can have the role. So off go the offers to Diana Ross, Cher, Olivia Newton-John, Barbara Eden, Cybil Shepherd, Dixie Carter, Shirley Jones, Raquel Welch, Ann Margaret, etc. to play 'Norma' on Broadway, no matter if they butcher the role or not. Just sell out the box office, please. Everyone says 'no', and the West End actress Elaine Paige gets the role and plays to half empty houses and closes the show in the red.
He learned his lesson. Ariana Grande will get the role if she wants it.

ALW is too enamored with celebrity singers in his productions.
Leona Lewis was Grizabella in the CATS revival in Bway and she stank. She threw the whole show completely off. She can’t act and she sang Memory like it was at a concert.
Grande can act but her voice seems so thin and bland

Ariana’s pop voice may be shallow but she has a Broadway belt too as was on display in “13.” Also, she’s a great actress. She has the tools to be as a good a Eva Peron as anyone else.
