What are some films where the parts are better than the sum? Or, what are films that should have done well but fell completely flat?

The Bonfire of the Vanities comes to my mind first:
Great director- Brian De Palma
Great source material- Tom Wolfe's page turning epic
Great music- Dave Grusin
Great Cast- Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, F. Murray Abraham, Saul Rubenik, Kim Cattrall, Alan King, Robert Stephens, and Morgan Freeman
And it was utter shit!
