Living in Princeton, NJ?

Friends, as much as I love Austin I sometimes wonder what it would be like to live in another town/city. I’ve always lived in big cities, except during my childhood when I lived in a bedroom suburb of Houston.

All of that is to ask about Princeton. It seems so cute and quaint and it’s fairly close to NYC and Philly. And it’s a college town, which is a requirement.

What are the pros and cons of Princeton?

There is no place to go if you're gay for miles and miles and miles. The closest gay bars are in New Brunswick and New Hope.

It's also very expensive--it's basically a very wealthy commuter exurb on NYC.

by Anonymousreply 1November 10, 2024 10:20 PM

More conservative than meets the eye. There are far better college towns.

by Anonymousreply 2November 10, 2024 10:26 PM

It’s not close to Manhattan, and if relying on public transportation it’s about a two hour commute.

by Anonymousreply 3November 10, 2024 10:44 PM

It's a bit closer to Philadelphia.

by Anonymousreply 4November 10, 2024 10:46 PM

There are gay bars in New Hope?

by Anonymousreply 5November 10, 2024 10:49 PM

r3 is correct. The station in Princeton links to Princeton Junction, which is in the burbs.

by Anonymousreply 6November 10, 2024 10:49 PM

Let's go halves on this, OP.

Cool house r7.

by Anonymousreply 8November 10, 2024 10:59 PM

Have you considered Piscataway?

by Anonymousreply 9November 10, 2024 10:59 PM

Are you rich?

by Anonymousreply 10November 10, 2024 11:08 PM

Are you open to other suggestions? I don't want to sound like a prick for saying Evanston (Northwstern) and the nearby lakeside suburbs like Winnetka (5 miles away) are nice.

by Anonymousreply 11November 10, 2024 11:14 PM

The rural people and the men in crises REFUSE to listen to Democrats. You’ll never persuade a nailed shut mind.

by Anonymousreply 12November 10, 2024 11:56 PM

R12 here…wrong thread.

by Anonymousreply 13November 10, 2024 11:57 PM

R7

I’m in!

by Anonymousreply 14November 11, 2024 12:11 AM

R11

I love Chicago but honestly, if I was going to move to that area, I’d likely stay in the city. My sister lived in Evanston and a lifelong friend in Winnetka - I’ve always heard great things about both towns.

by Anonymousreply 15November 11, 2024 12:12 AM

Meh

by Anonymousreply 16November 11, 2024 12:18 AM

You’ll never be admitted with your scores.

by Anonymousreply 17November 11, 2024 12:19 AM

r7 Zero square feet? Seems overpriced.

by Anonymousreply 18November 11, 2024 12:33 AM

OP, for somebody from New Jersey you sure ask a lot of questions.

by Anonymousreply 19November 11, 2024 1:05 PM

They have pancakes.

by Anonymousreply 20November 11, 2024 2:52 PM

Beautiful town ! Great restaurants, bars and retail. Surrounding area also very nice.

by Anonymousreply 21November 11, 2024 3:21 PM

Except there’s this large garbage dump of wealth and entitlement right there in town. Bad juju.

by Anonymousreply 22November 11, 2024 3:27 PM

I grew up there. It is prettier than a lot of people think NJ can be. Preppy heaven in the 80s. The university doesn't want a ton to do with the town itself. Probably typical of Ivies. Some old style East Coast wealth/class stuff. Some colonial history in the town and region. Expensive. Haughty? Elitist?

by Anonymousreply 23November 11, 2024 5:07 PM

Huh?!—Cambridge

by Anonymousreply 24November 11, 2024 5:09 PM

Not Cambridge then..I don't know Boston very well. Yale has New Haven at an arm's length.

by Anonymousreply 25November 11, 2024 5:16 PM

Columbia cares so much about Morningside Heights that it’s bought up most of it.

by Anonymousreply 26November 11, 2024 5:18 PM

Dartmouth owns Hanover.

by Anonymousreply 27November 11, 2024 5:36 PM

Stealth Piscataway thread, R9.

by Anonymousreply 28November 11, 2024 5:52 PM

Very white. Very wealthy

by Anonymousreply 29November 11, 2024 5:58 PM

Very expensive.

by Anonymousreply 30November 11, 2024 6:01 PM

Major pussy hound. Big Bush supporter.

by Anonymousreply 31November 11, 2024 6:07 PM

I visited family there for quite a long time, and r23's comments track.

I grew up for in another college town in flyover for a while , and I think the trend since the late 80s or so has been that these towns are seen as cash grabs for retail and hospitality, pushing the townies out.

by Anonymousreply 32November 11, 2024 6:55 PM

Meh. Consider Lausanne, Oxford, Heidelberg, Galway, Bologna

by Anonymousreply 33November 11, 2024 7:12 PM

Cambridge over Oxford. Oxford feels like a Home Counties suburb at this point.

by Anonymousreply 34November 11, 2024 7:13 PM

I grew up in Houston and did my PhD at Princeton. It's beautiful but New Jersey is filled with angry white people and the food scene sucks.

by Anonymousreply 35November 11, 2024 7:14 PM

And that’s just the freshman dorms!^

by Anonymousreply 36November 11, 2024 7:47 PM

Architecturally, there are a great many very fine older houses, Otherwise, it never struck me as very appealing.

by Anonymousreply 37November 11, 2024 10:23 PM

I lived in Princeton from ’93 - ’95, not as a student. I’m a butch lesbian. Never once had a problem with being queer. It is expensive, but there are some nice homes for sale further away from the center of town. New Brunswick is disgusting and I never felt safe there. Princeton is full of OLD money, so it probably is a 50/50 town as far as liberal/conservative goes. Previous posters are correct, it’s a hike to NYC. 2 hours is correct for one way travel. They have a great regional theatre, McCarter Theater. The surrounding NE corridor is GROSS, for the most part. It is closer to Philly and New Hope. New Hope is a cute little town. Lawrenceville is great for antique shopping. If you decide to live there, the further away you get from Nassau street, the better the price of everything is. Good luck, OP.

by Anonymousreply 38November 11, 2024 10:36 PM

The elitist owners of Labyrinth Books on Nassau Street near the university, have a reputation for mistreating workers and there is a high staff turnover rate. I think the bookstore workers have since unionized.

by Anonymousreply 39November 11, 2024 10:50 PM

R38 did living there make you boring or were you born that way?

by Anonymousreply 40November 11, 2024 11:05 PM

R39, is my memory foggy, or was Labyrinth Books a hippie dippy, kind of Xtian bookstore? It never once looked appealing as I’d pass it on my way to get a hoagie. Please correct me if I'm wrong about Labyrinth Books.

by Anonymousreply 41November 14, 2024 8:32 PM

It's no Fort Lee.

by Anonymousreply 42November 14, 2024 8:38 PM

R38 - Fuck off, Troll.

by Anonymousreply 43November 14, 2024 8:47 PM

The Raspberry Beret Cafe is a must.
