What are you going to buy before the tariffs are implemented?

I’ve got one of them shiny new M4 MacBook Pros in my shopping cart, although it’s much more powerful than I need, but I don’t think the incoming Orange Turd likes Tim Apple, so I probably won’t be able to get one as cheaply come January.

I’m also thinking of buying several PS5s and selling them Trump supporters once the cost of a new PS5 goes above $1,000.

by Anonymousreply 60November 14, 2024 1:32 AM

YES BUT the Chinese pay the tariffs OP!!!!!! The Chinese!!!! Everything will be cheaper and there will be free gas and eggs will cost $1 and jobs will fall out of the sky!!!!!

Trump is the best businessman in history. He's so smart. Nobody has ever seen anything like it. He knows what he's doing. I'm going to be a millionaire.

by Anonymousreply 1November 10, 2024 5:18 PM

Definitely a vehicle some time next year-- I am guessing alot of this shit won't start until end of '25 or '26, but I will keep myself informed.

by Anonymousreply 2November 10, 2024 5:25 PM

My current MacBook is seven years old and works ok, but I've been considering a getting a new one. I'll probably buy a new one in December.

by Anonymousreply 3November 10, 2024 5:32 PM

Trump said he is going to implement tariffs immediately R2. He doesn't need congress to implement tariffs - just an executive order. Project 2025 have said they've already drawn up a raft of executive orders for everything. They're organized this time. I wouldn't wait too long or you'll miss the boat. Something many political analysts have said over the past few days is that we are going to be surprised by the speed everything happens.

by Anonymousreply 4November 10, 2024 5:40 PM

TV, car, computer, and washer/dry replacements are on my radar since all but my computer are 12 to 15 years old. I'll buy some cordless power tools during holiday sales once I choose an ecosystem: Milwaukee, DeWalt and Makita are all made overseas, along with the house brands of all the major hardware stores.

by Anonymousreply 5November 10, 2024 5:42 PM

Bosch are nice quality power tools R5. German. Makita is nowhere near as good.

by Anonymousreply 6November 10, 2024 5:49 PM

I'm glad I replaced most of my tools a few years ago.

by Anonymousreply 7November 10, 2024 5:54 PM

Fuck R4. Jesus Christ...

by Anonymousreply 8November 10, 2024 6:03 PM

Air purifier, water filter, computer, snowblower, and maybe lawnmower. We also need a new couch. Possibly convection oven or new blender. Possibly a few tools or small portable heater. And a few small solar panels for camping. Maybe some new camping stuff. No need for new linens. Maybe some extra clothes like jeans or shoes.

Meh, can go crazy thinking up a list. I guess we will get what we can. Wish I could afford a new car.

by Anonymousreply 9November 10, 2024 6:27 PM

OP good idea on the PS5s. What other smallish items could be bought for resale afterwards?

by Anonymousreply 10November 10, 2024 6:28 PM

What R8?

by Anonymousreply 11November 10, 2024 6:29 PM

I'm also pricing out a new MacBook Pro. It's the only major purchase in my sights for the next few years...

by Anonymousreply 12November 10, 2024 6:31 PM

[quote] I’m also thinking of buying several PS5s and selling them Trump supporter

I love how people are already dreaming up ways to exploit the MAGATS.

The stupid inbreds have no idea how little they will have left after four years..

They deserve every misery.

by Anonymousreply 13November 10, 2024 6:31 PM

R10 Maybe iPads or other game consoles like Xbox or Nintendo products.

by Anonymousreply 14November 10, 2024 6:32 PM

Probably a car. Definitely a new dishwasher and computer.

That PS5 idea is fantastic. Instead of fleecing the tubes, maybe I'll have them engage in hand-to-hand instead. My version of a bum fight.

I'll need entertainment since Prime and Netflix will most likely quadruple their subscription fees and I ain't paying that shit.

by Anonymousreply 15November 10, 2024 6:33 PM

Thanks, R6, I'll add Bosch to the list of possibilities.

by Anonymousreply 16November 10, 2024 6:33 PM

*fleecing the RUBES

They are RUBES.

by Anonymousreply 17November 10, 2024 6:34 PM

Ok, will look into the holiday sales.

When is the next time to buy tech stuff over the holidays? Thanksgiving or right before Xmas?

by Anonymousreply 18November 10, 2024 6:34 PM

R18 I think it depends on when retailers start their sales. I recall last year Target started sales on tech products a week before Thanksgiving. Your best bet would be to start looking at different online stores now and start keeping track of when they announce or start their sales.

by Anonymousreply 19November 10, 2024 6:41 PM

[quote] Definitely a new dishwasher

My dishwasher is 20 years old and I'm now thinking I should just replace it now instead of waiting.

by Anonymousreply 20November 10, 2024 6:43 PM

Everything, honestly

by Anonymousreply 21November 10, 2024 6:44 PM

What about OTC meds and household stuff? Will that be affected as well?

by Anonymousreply 22November 10, 2024 6:51 PM

Now is the time to buy a new computer if you need one. All of it comes from overseas. Don't wait, the "low information voters" will suddenly become high information voters buying up all this stuff like the day they announced the Covid lock down.

When Trump was in office the first time, there was a tariff and GPU shortage which boosted that one part that most computers need from 800 to 2,000 dollars on higher end computers.

by Anonymousreply 23November 10, 2024 6:54 PM

Refrigerators would be good.

I cancelled several orders that I had previously made.

We are going austere for this holiday season. I had thought to buy nice things for Christmas but now, I’m not so sure.

Maybe more people will be doing the same.

by Anonymousreply 24November 10, 2024 6:56 PM

I would buy a large screen TV if you need one now. Before Christmas.

by Anonymousreply 25November 10, 2024 7:00 PM

Definitely a computer and some tires. I guess tires will be affected and they are already a mint now. It’s going time be a pricey time at Costco.

by Anonymousreply 26November 10, 2024 7:02 PM

I decided to buy out my car lease in September. I did because it was in perfect condition and at a price I could afford. Looks like I made the right decision.

by Anonymousreply 27November 10, 2024 7:04 PM

Here is the big surprise no one is talking about. Trump is going to get rid of the regulators that control the interest rate. Once that is done, the price of houses will go up but the average loan will have interest rates the explode like they did in the 70's when it was 15% - 18% and more.

by Anonymousreply 28November 10, 2024 7:04 PM

Gamers who voted for Trump about to cry.

Gen Z boys not going to like that. Their games are more important to them than well anything else. Including woman. They will still pay it though.

by Anonymousreply 30November 12, 2024 1:29 PM

I'm trying to think of things I'd miss over here on the European side and can't. Velveeta?

by Anonymousreply 31November 12, 2024 1:30 PM

(I was kidding about that, except the blue moon Ro-Tel dip when I have copious amounts of pot, silly!)

by Anonymousreply 32November 12, 2024 1:40 PM

[quote]What are you going to buy before the tariffs are implemented?

A good lawyer might not be a bad idea.

by Anonymousreply 33November 12, 2024 1:42 PM

I am not going to buy anything in the next 4 years. I had planned to buy a new car and remodel my kitchen and bathrooms but not anymore. I will only be paying my bills and buying food (no more dining out) period. I will put all my money in an index fund and spend nothing.

by Anonymousreply 34November 12, 2024 6:06 PM

If you’re considering a Polestar, a Volvo, a Buick Envision or a Lincoln Nautilus-buy it now. Volvos are owned by the Chinese; the other three are built in China.

And as for Mexican made cars-almost all of them make cars in Mexico.

The cars with the most American made content are (not surprisingly) Teslas.

Why do I feel like the Big 3 are going to end up in trouble again, Elon will buy them for $1, fire everyone and rehire them without a union contract.

by Anonymousreply 35November 12, 2024 6:12 PM

I recently replaced all of my appliances. Induction oven, new fridge, new washer, new dryer and new dishwasher. I have been feeling grateful every day that I did that prior to this election. And I just paid off my Toyota. So I guess I just need a new laptop now and I will be at peace. I can't predict the smaller things that may need purchasing in the future, and I am not going to break my brain or my wallet trying to anticipate what those future things might be. I think buying less stuff in general is good, and the tariffs will certainly cause me to be more thoughtful about anything I purchase moving forward, from new clothes all the way to electronics. I embrace the challenge to buy less.

by Anonymousreply 36November 12, 2024 6:26 PM

That index fun may not be what it used to be, R34.

by Anonymousreply 37November 12, 2024 6:28 PM

I guess my next (last) car won't be a Toyota.

by Anonymousreply 38November 12, 2024 6:28 PM

Socks and underwear.

by Anonymousreply 39November 12, 2024 6:36 PM

Errrybody needs unnerbritches.

[quote] We are going austere for this holiday season. I had thought to buy nice things for Christmas but now, I’m not so sure.

Bitch.

by Anonymousreply 41November 12, 2024 7:10 PM

Everyone is thinking the same way. If I need something big, I'd get it now.

Either Christmas spending will be high in anticipation of tariffs or down because people are hunkering down because of worry about the economy. I can't decide.

by Anonymousreply 42November 12, 2024 7:16 PM

That’s my predicament, R42.

Can’t decide whether or not to charge up a storm and worry about it next year or pay off debt as much as I can. 🤷🏻‍♀️

by Anonymousreply 43November 13, 2024 12:53 AM

I’m childless in Flyoverstan, I’m going to be revenge buying everything I can get my hands on when the breeders can’t afford more than rice and potatoes.

by Anonymousreply 44November 13, 2024 1:09 AM

a new Audi Q7.

by Anonymousreply 45November 13, 2024 1:13 AM

R45- The 2026 model- out summer next year is a total refresh and looks KICK ASS

by Anonymousreply 46November 13, 2024 1:27 AM

Stamps and tea.

by Anonymousreply 47November 13, 2024 1:34 AM

Is Trump threatening to tack a tariff onto everything made outside the country? What about food?

by Anonymousreply 48November 13, 2024 1:35 AM

We ordered a Porsche Macan Ev that we are locked into....Not gonna arrive till Jan/Feb so we are hoping

by Anonymousreply 52November 13, 2024 2:53 AM

About three weeks ago Amazon had a flash sale on brand-new M2 Macbook Airs — they went from $999 to $699. My old laptop may or may not have lighted up when you opened it, depending on its mood. And the power cord was a fire hazard. So I bit (typing on it now).

Not until I saw this thread did I think of that specific purchase and how much higher it may be next year. Indeed, if your laptop is of a certain age, this might be the time to do it. And Black Friday sales are coming.

by Anonymousreply 53November 13, 2024 2:57 AM

The hubs and I have too much shit.

If the cash economy goes to hell…which I think it will…I see bartering or lots of gig-jobs emerging.

During the pandemic we had a lot of annoying tasks completed in exchange for new-ish stuff.

by Anonymousreply 54November 13, 2024 3:06 AM

Coffee, spices, tea.

Clothes, etc. Some shoes, boots for winter.

Someone mentioned appliances, so maybe a portable induction stovetop. Dehumidifier and air purifier are on the list. New computer, and snowblower. Maybe a small fridge.

by Anonymousreply 55November 13, 2024 3:47 AM

He said everything including food R48.

by Anonymousreply 56November 13, 2024 3:53 AM

We’re gonna buy so much now, when he takes office we may see a taper off right at the beginning.

by Anonymousreply 57November 13, 2024 4:06 AM

Food will get a double hit. If he puts tariffs on importing food like he says, that will go up by whatever the tariff is, but if it deports all the illegal immigrants who are the vast majority of working picking the fruit in the fields of California and other places, that's going to cost more to hire people to replace them who will not work under the table and therefore want more than minimum wages. Unfortunately, cant really buy too much food like that in advance. Dry goods and canned stuff probably wont change as much.

by Anonymousreply 58November 13, 2024 7:24 AM

Californians and Texans, just remember…avocados don’t drown on trees!

Oh, wait.
