What are you going to buy before the tariffs are implemented?
I’ve got one of them shiny new M4 MacBook Pros in my shopping cart, although it’s much more powerful than I need, but I don’t think the incoming Orange Turd likes Tim Apple, so I probably won’t be able to get one as cheaply come January.
I’m also thinking of buying several PS5s and selling them Trump supporters once the cost of a new PS5 goes above $1,000.

YES BUT the Chinese pay the tariffs OP!!!!!! The Chinese!!!! Everything will be cheaper and there will be free gas and eggs will cost $1 and jobs will fall out of the sky!!!!!
Trump is the best businessman in history. He's so smart. Nobody has ever seen anything like it. He knows what he's doing. I'm going to be a millionaire.

My current MacBook is seven years old and works ok, but I've been considering a getting a new one. I'll probably buy a new one in December.

Trump said he is going to implement tariffs immediately R2. He doesn't need congress to implement tariffs - just an executive order. Project 2025 have said they've already drawn up a raft of executive orders for everything. They're organized this time. I wouldn't wait too long or you'll miss the boat. Something many political analysts have said over the past few days is that we are going to be surprised by the speed everything happens.

TV, car, computer, and washer/dry replacements are on my radar since all but my computer are 12 to 15 years old. I'll buy some cordless power tools during holiday sales once I choose an ecosystem: Milwaukee, DeWalt and Makita are all made overseas, along with the house brands of all the major hardware stores.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 10, 2024 5:42 PM

Bosch are nice quality power tools R5. German. Makita is nowhere near as good.

Air purifier, water filter, computer, snowblower, and maybe lawnmower. We also need a new couch. Possibly convection oven or new blender. Possibly a few tools or small portable heater. And a few small solar panels for camping. Maybe some new camping stuff. No need for new linens. Maybe some extra clothes like jeans or shoes.
Meh, can go crazy thinking up a list. I guess we will get what we can. Wish I could afford a new car.

OP good idea on the PS5s. What other smallish items could be bought for resale afterwards?

I'm also pricing out a new MacBook Pro. It's the only major purchase in my sights for the next few years...

I love how people are already dreaming up ways to exploit the MAGATS.

R10 Maybe iPads or other game consoles like Xbox or Nintendo products.

Probably a car. Definitely a new dishwasher and computer.
That PS5 idea is fantastic. Instead of fleecing the tubes, maybe I'll have them engage in hand-to-hand instead. My version of a bum fight.
I'll need entertainment since Prime and Netflix will most likely quadruple their subscription fees and I ain't paying that shit.

When is the next time to buy tech stuff over the holidays? Thanksgiving or right before Xmas?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 10, 2024 6:34 PM

R18 I think it depends on when retailers start their sales. I recall last year Target started sales on tech products a week before Thanksgiving. Your best bet would be to start looking at different online stores now and start keeping track of when they announce or start their sales.

Now is the time to buy a new computer if you need one. All of it comes from overseas. Don't wait, the "low information voters" will suddenly become high information voters buying up all this stuff like the day they announced the Covid lock down.
When Trump was in office the first time, there was a tariff and GPU shortage which boosted that one part that most computers need from 800 to 2,000 dollars on higher end computers.

Refrigerators would be good.
I cancelled several orders that I had previously made.

Here is the big surprise no one is talking about. Trump is going to get rid of the regulators that control the interest rate. Once that is done, the price of houses will go up but the average loan will have interest rates the explode like they did in the 70's when it was 15% - 18% and more.

I am not going to buy anything in the next 4 years. I had planned to buy a new car and remodel my kitchen and bathrooms but not anymore. I will only be paying my bills and buying food (no more dining out) period. I will put all my money in an index fund and spend nothing.

If you’re considering a Polestar, a Volvo, a Buick Envision or a Lincoln Nautilus-buy it now. Volvos are owned by the Chinese; the other three are built in China.
And as for Mexican made cars-almost all of them make cars in Mexico.
The cars with the most American made content are (not surprisingly) Teslas.
Why do I feel like the Big 3 are going to end up in trouble again, Elon will buy them for $1, fire everyone and rehire them without a union contract.

I recently replaced all of my appliances. Induction oven, new fridge, new washer, new dryer and new dishwasher. I have been feeling grateful every day that I did that prior to this election. And I just paid off my Toyota. So I guess I just need a new laptop now and I will be at peace. I can't predict the smaller things that may need purchasing in the future, and I am not going to break my brain or my wallet trying to anticipate what those future things might be. I think buying less stuff in general is good, and the tariffs will certainly cause me to be more thoughtful about anything I purchase moving forward, from new clothes all the way to electronics. I embrace the challenge to buy less.

Either Christmas spending will be high in anticipation of tariffs or down because people are hunkering down because of worry about the economy. I can't decide.

About three weeks ago Amazon had a flash sale on brand-new M2 Macbook Airs — they went from $999 to $699. My old laptop may or may not have lighted up when you opened it, depending on its mood. And the power cord was a fire hazard. So I bit (typing on it now).
Not until I saw this thread did I think of that specific purchase and how much higher it may be next year. Indeed, if your laptop is of a certain age, this might be the time to do it. And Black Friday sales are coming.

Coffee, spices, tea.
Clothes, etc. Some shoes, boots for winter.

Food will get a double hit. If he puts tariffs on importing food like he says, that will go up by whatever the tariff is, but if it deports all the illegal immigrants who are the vast majority of working picking the fruit in the fields of California and other places, that's going to cost more to hire people to replace them who will not work under the table and therefore want more than minimum wages. Unfortunately, cant really buy too much food like that in advance. Dry goods and canned stuff probably wont change as much.
