Democrat's 2028 Presidential Nominee

It's not too early to start the horserace.

by Anonymousreply 258November 22, 2024 3:30 PM

Jesus Christ not Baruch Obama. I get so embarrassed watching him speak.

by Anonymousreply 1November 10, 2024 4:46 PM

Far too soon to say. If Israel worsens, Shapiro may be too radioactive. But he’s great.

by Anonymousreply 2November 10, 2024 4:47 PM

🤷🏻‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 3November 10, 2024 4:49 PM

I can't stand Newsome. But since the US loves populists so much, he would be perfect. Personally, I'd prefer Buttigieg. For best outcome / chance to win: Shapiro maybe?

by Anonymousreply 4November 10, 2024 4:53 PM

This "election" has really soured me on the whole thing. It's a no for me. I'm out.

by Anonymousreply 5November 10, 2024 4:57 PM

Not a California liberal please. We just tried that.

by Anonymousreply 6November 10, 2024 4:58 PM

As long as it's not a Female!!

I'm sorry but it will not happen in my lifetime, I believe that to be true, finally.

by Anonymousreply 7November 10, 2024 5:04 PM

I'm not voting ever again after this shit. Let Trump and MAGA wreck it all. I don't care anymore.

by Anonymousreply 8November 10, 2024 5:07 PM

Anyone from DEM can win the election in 2028. The economy will be even worse after Trump's 4 years. We all know GOP sucks on economy.

by Anonymousreply 9November 10, 2024 5:10 PM

There won't be an election, silly!

by Anonymousreply 10November 10, 2024 5:13 PM

On the optics level, I voted Beshear, because he's governed a redneck state as a Democrat. He can manage the center. Shapiro is a close second, it would seem. He's at least building a track record. Pete has no meaningful track record. Newsom is an attack ad's dream. Whitmer seems to be like Beshear - doing the impossible. I'm a little bit reluctant about women after Clinton and Harris but not much. In fairness, neither of them came to the contest unfettered. Pritzker, maybe. Got a track record. Maybe he's got that big Mack Daddy energy that could move people. Moore I don't know much about but he seems a bit slick. Klobuchar and Cooper I think are better left in the spaces for party elders.

But in the end all I care about is someone who can effectively a specific platform with good ideas that people will vote for and won't drag out Oprah Winfrey and her ilk again.

It seems to me most of the people on the list are capable of that to one degree or another within the scope of their own talents. I just want somebody who isn't afraid to say this is what I will do, plainly.

by Anonymousreply 11November 10, 2024 5:14 PM

I’ll vote for and donate to Newsom. Anybody else, I’ll just vote for them.

But if it’s a woman, a gay man, or a man with a Jewish name, we’ll lose. It’s a numbers game and the bigots outnumber any other voting bloc.

We have to stop running candidates who seem like they’ll usher in the world we want to live in. In the real world the other side hates that dream and they close ranks far better than Democrats do. If we can’t find a moderate straight white guy who seems strong and sane, we’ll go down again.

by Anonymousreply 12November 10, 2024 5:21 PM

Good reply R11.

by Anonymousreply 13November 10, 2024 5:22 PM

Buttigieg should run for governor of Michigan. If he were to win, he could build a track record.

He should not be the nominee in 2028. If America won't elect a woman, it's not going to elect a gay man despite his talents.

by Anonymousreply 14November 10, 2024 5:25 PM
Anyone from DEM can win the election in 2028.

I agree, Shitler is going to so decimate the economy and world affairs that we could put up a rock and it would win, but not if it has a vagina. Not trying to be flip; just speaking plain, cold truth.

This country will not elect a woman to the presidency in the lifetime of anyone reading this post.

It's this simple, and easy to remember: when we nominate a woman at the top of the ticket, we lose.

by Anonymousreply 15November 10, 2024 5:26 PM

R12, why Newsom? I am trying to understand why DL seems so enthusiastic about him. He seems like a recipe for failure to me, based on his state and his lifetime of doing little but politics.

by Anonymousreply 16November 10, 2024 5:28 PM

R14, I agree 100%. Unfortunately, because he is a gay man, Pete has to do more and better than a straight man. He's in the same boat as a woman candidate. It sucks, but it's reality.

by Anonymousreply 17November 10, 2024 5:29 PM

"This "election" has really soured me on the whole thing. It's a no for me. I'm out."

"I'm not voting ever again after this shit. Let Trump and MAGA wreck it all. I don't care anymore."

With friends like this, who needs enemies?

by Anonymousreply 18November 10, 2024 5:29 PM

I wish I could say my Whitmer but I’m really worried about a woman not being electable after Tuesday. Beshear was my VP pick before Walz.

by Anonymousreply 19November 10, 2024 5:34 PM
why Newsom? I am trying to understand why DL seems so enthusiastic about him.

I don't like Newsom at all. He is the worst one on that list. Slick, stands for nothing and has a terrible track record. People on here are enthusiastic about him because he's a handsome white man. That's all.

by Anonymousreply 20November 10, 2024 5:37 PM

Beshear as the nominee and Whitmer as the VP running mate

by Anonymousreply 21November 10, 2024 5:39 PM

I recently turned 35 and I see DL didn't include me in the poll.

by Anonymousreply 22November 10, 2024 5:42 PM
why Newsom?

He was among the first politicians who granted same sex marriage rights, and he's been an ally his entire career. He'd make a fantastic POTUS; he's led the largest state well, has the skills and background, and certainly has the bonafides; he's Nancy Pelosi's grand-nephew (iirc). And yes, I know, all of these things are also reasons why he'd have a difficult time.

by Anonymousreply 23November 10, 2024 5:45 PM

The next Democratic presidential candidate will be the whitest white man who ever whited.

by Anonymousreply 24November 10, 2024 5:46 PM

R18, if people are rotten, I'm not going to help them. Tell me why I should vote when it means nothing?

by Anonymousreply 25November 10, 2024 5:47 PM

Whitmer is term-limited in 2026. I’m sure Pete is going to run to replace her, but then he really shouldn’t run for President immediately.

by Anonymousreply 26November 10, 2024 5:47 PM

Newsom would be a horrible president. He has no substance. No one votes on issues like same sex marriage. His track record in California is terrible.

by Anonymousreply 27November 10, 2024 5:52 PM

I don't think Pete would win a gubernatorial race in Michigan. There is still homophobia in some parts of that state.

But, I'm surprised that the Michigan homophobe Republicans don't trash Gretchen Whitmer's lesbian daughter on social media. The daughter is pretty much left alone.

by Anonymousreply 28November 10, 2024 5:53 PM
Nancy Pelosi's grand-nephew (iirc).

R30 I also add moderate straight white males who are Christian.

Anti-semitism and Christian Nationalism are rampant in this country and there's no way Shapiro or Pritzker would be elected.

by Anonymousreply 31November 10, 2024 6:02 PM

"Tell me why I should vote when it means nothing?"

Drop the histrionics and faux drama and find out.

by Anonymousreply 32November 10, 2024 6:02 PM
I’ll vote for and donate to Newsom. Anybody else, I’ll just vote for them.
If we can’t find a moderate straight white guy who seems strong and sane, we’ll go down again.

Newsom would be a disaster. He is not a moderate and in fact, he went farther to the left than even Kamala did on crime, immigration, the gender insanity, and everything else over the last 4 years. On top of that, he comes off as slick and insincere, because he is. California is unaffordable, our cities have entire neighborhoods that look like the third world, and we have a massive budget deficit, but Gavin’s priorities are raising gas prices even more and banning plastic bags in grocery stores. He will never be president.

by Anonymousreply 33November 10, 2024 6:03 PM

Could Ruben Gallego have a chance? He's a moderate and served in the military.

by Anonymousreply 34November 10, 2024 6:04 PM

R34, he was just elected to the Senate, although the same could be said of one Barack Obama when he ran for President.

by Anonymousreply 35November 10, 2024 6:06 PM

Dems need a straight, white Southerner governor. Beshear it is.

by Anonymousreply 36November 10, 2024 6:08 PM

Obama was a moment in time. One of those rare candidates. Alchemy.

by Anonymousreply 37November 10, 2024 6:09 PM

Another gay male politician who I think would be a terrific POTUS is Jared Polis. I agree, a gay man or woman will never be elected president.

I have wondered if a white woman with military experience could win as a Democrat.

by Anonymousreply 39November 10, 2024 6:13 PM

It'll be VANCE.

by Anonymousreply 40November 10, 2024 6:13 PM

Beshear needs to get out and start doing interviews, podcasts, etc on the way forward for the Democratic party. Newsom is certainly going to do it, I bet Shapiro does too.

by Anonymousreply 41November 10, 2024 6:14 PM

I wish there more centrist Dem YouTubers and podcasters. Tired of people like Brian Tyler Cohen and MeidasTouch guys.

by Anonymousreply 42November 10, 2024 6:21 PM

Waste of time.Elections are over forever in U.S. Trump will assign official positions in each state. MAGA members already sending suck-up letters to get good positions-So predictable.

by Anonymousreply 43November 10, 2024 6:51 PM

Oh they're just having momentary tantrums R18. When the dust settles they'll calm down and be fine. Everyone is just yelling and stamping their feet at the moment.

by Anonymousreply 44November 10, 2024 6:52 PM

I don't understand anyone who voted Buttigieg. As great as he is - there is no possibility whatsoever of America electing a gay president. Zero chance. Maybe in 50 - 100 years. It's got to be one of the most unrealistic things I see regularly popping up on DL. Some of you must live in total fantasy land.

by Anonymousreply 45November 10, 2024 7:09 PM

I agree, as competent as he is

by Anonymousreply 46November 10, 2024 7:14 PM

Sorry but Beshear and all Democratic males right now scream beta cuck to the public.

by Anonymousreply 49November 10, 2024 7:22 PM

Be strategic. There are more women than men. It took Trump just four years to get Biden -- serviceable but no one's "choice" -- more than 80 million votes. This next 4 years will be very rough, it will be retrograde misogyny, racism, homophobia and xenophobia. By 2028, the majority of female voters will be ready for a female President. Four years from now is not today, the mood will shift DRAMATICALLY before the next election.

by Anonymousreply 50November 10, 2024 7:29 PM
By 2028, the majority of female voters will be ready for a female President.

Clueless garbage R50. The first female president will be Republican and it won't be any time soon.

by Anonymousreply 51November 10, 2024 7:32 PM

The only way the US will ever elect a gay person or a woman as president is if a good amount of the population becomes less religious and conservative Christian communities dwindle down a bit. Many conservative Christians both men and women don't like the idea of a women being in high levels of political office.

by Anonymousreply 52November 10, 2024 7:36 PM
The next Democratic presidential candidate will be the whitest white man who ever whited.

That would be a mistake. The non-whites who voted for Trump don't look at him as just "white," he is a celebrity who is coarse, brash, thuggish, rich and always gets his way. He has appeal beyond his message, and certainly, beyond his race. However, he always fails to measure up to the task. We must let him fail and select the candidate who is best able to take advantage of his failures.

by Anonymousreply 53November 10, 2024 7:37 PM

need to look for a moderate like Bill Clinton was...

by Anonymousreply 54November 10, 2024 7:40 PM

Are there any white Dem congressmen or senators that are Bill Clinton types?

Shapiro is so fucking sexy with his Obama voice.

by Anonymousreply 56November 10, 2024 7:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 57November 10, 2024 7:46 PM

"The only way the US will ever elect a gay person or a woman as president is if a good amount of the population becomes less religious and conservative Christian communities dwindle down a bit."

The vast majority of Americans do NOT attend church services regularly, if ever.

Americans pay lip service to religion, and that's all. Americans religious piety is every bit as fake as their and Donald Trump's "patriotism."

If Americans were truly religious, they would never let a lying, thieving, pussy grabbing, con artist/grifter/sexual pervert like Trump anywhere near The Oval Office. But they did, not once, but two fucking times.

by Anonymousreply 58November 10, 2024 7:52 PM

R57 Wrong. I think we have entered a new age of politics. Get someone REAL. Someone who will talk that shit, rile up the base, whoever it is. I don’t know why Harris/Walz stop with the— “they’re weird” attacks. That shit was working.

by Anonymousreply 59November 10, 2024 7:56 PM

Neither Whitmer or Beshears is ready. Trust me on this. I know Michigan. Pete is brilliant but he unelectable.

by Anonymousreply 60November 10, 2024 8:00 PM

Shapiro with Wes Moore as the VP

by Anonymousreply 61November 10, 2024 8:17 PM

Cooper would win the DL vote in a landslide!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62November 10, 2024 8:21 PM

Jon Ossoff as a VP candidate.

by Anonymousreply 63November 10, 2024 8:26 PM

R61 They should run Whitmer. She is hot hot. Kamala is hot but aging.

by Anonymousreply 64November 10, 2024 8:30 PM

Whitmer is now letting her hair go grey and she messed up her face with too much botox and other cosmetic procedures. She looks like an aging sociopathic serial killer that you see in a horror movie.

by Anonymousreply 65November 10, 2024 8:38 PM

Ossoff has to get reelected in 2026 first.

by Anonymousreply 66November 10, 2024 8:41 PM

FFS! NO WOMEN NO JEWS NO GAYS NO BLACKS

by Anonymousreply 67November 10, 2024 9:02 PM

Shapiro/Wes Moore would actually be a winning combo. They both are charming. And Wes Moore is actually a brotha from a working class background and military.

by Anonymousreply 68November 10, 2024 9:04 PM

Newsom is a sex scandal waiting to happen and he’s done nothing to fix the homeless situation in his own state.

by Anonymousreply 69November 10, 2024 9:20 PM

R69 Newsom is simply unelectable because he is the governor of California. It’s a sad truth. They would be too much baggage.

by Anonymousreply 70November 10, 2024 9:23 PM

NO ONE FROM THE COASTS!

by Anonymousreply 71November 10, 2024 9:59 PM

It will be a clown nominee there to offer Washington Generals opposition, selected by the MAGA leadership.

Odds favor Kim Kardashian. Russia did something similar with Ksenia Sobchak.

by Anonymousreply 72November 10, 2024 10:48 PM

A Shapiro/Beshear ticket, in either configuration, would be formidable. I think Wes Moore and Ruben Gallego are also potential VP candidates. Dems will be wary of putting any woman on the ticket, which eliminates Whitmer and Klobuchar. Pete won't even be in consideration in 2028. He needs to run for statewide office in MI.

by Anonymousreply 73November 10, 2024 10:53 PM

Shapiro is all but certain to be the nominee. He's relatively young and the governor of the swingiest and bluest of the blue wall states. He's a moderate democrat respected by both democrats and republicans in Pennsylvania. The party just has to move on from identity politics and forget that he's a Jew.

The question is who will be his running mate and Beshear does seem to be the most likely: popular moderate governor elected twice in a deep red state. The vp pick won't be Whitmer because she doesn't expand the electoral map and the electoral college makes it almost impossible for democrats to win.

by Anonymousreply 74November 11, 2024 1:55 AM

R70: Nobody really likes Newsom and he's way too progressive.

by Anonymousreply 75November 11, 2024 1:56 AM

None of these people stand a chance because the second Trump term will likely be quite successful and that will tremendously help Vance or whoever the GOP nominee is.

by Anonymousreply 76November 11, 2024 2:01 AM

Plus he's Nancy's creature and there may be Nancy fatigue in the party. God knows if the old crone can still form a sentence by the 2026 primary season she'll be out there running her mouth and giggling at her own jokes.

by Anonymousreply 77November 11, 2024 2:40 AM

I want it to be Kamala with Ossoff as her running mate. Just kidding! That would be a great ticket but unelectable. I think the next Democratic nominee needs to be Latino. Yes. With a woman running mate. A white woman.

by Anonymousreply 78November 11, 2024 2:49 AM

R78 Ritchie Torres for VP. Black and Latino. He’s gay but straight acting.
The only ones who have a chance are moderate straight white males.

Unfortunately - and disturbingly - I don't think that cheeto's second term will be horrific enough that the extreme fringe of the dems would support a straight white male.

Even if they could be convinced, a more centrist policy on, well, everything would never fly with them or their supporters. When the inevitable splinter progressive party emerges, they'll pull support from any Dem candidate.

I guess we're seeing a partial fulfillment of Revelations with the rethugs getting a thousand year reign on earth...

R79 Ritchie Torres is a lot of wonderful things, but Presidential isn't one of them. I love Ritchie.

by Anonymousreply 85November 11, 2024 3:17 AM

I really think Andy Beshear would be the ultimate safe choice. He has been the governor of red Kentucky for a long while and is even respected by some of the deplorables.

Gavin is too risky, but I admire his ferocity.

We need someone bland, white, male and safe. Our country is still too dumb and bigoted. I like Andy and think he’d be amazing

by Anonymousreply 86November 11, 2024 3:20 AM

R86 is envisioning a younger Joe Biden. No joke.

by Anonymousreply 87November 11, 2024 3:23 AM

R86, not too bland. Personally I think we need a Bill Clinton. Only Mexican.

by Anonymousreply 88November 11, 2024 3:32 AM

by Anonymousreply 89November 11, 2024 3:42 AM

No more Gen X. That garbage generation doesn't deserve to be catered to. They are complete and utter political shitshow.

by Anonymousreply 92November 11, 2024 4:53 AM

After this horrible election, I have a reviewed a few candidates in my mind. Right now, I think I'm going with Andy Beshear--a nice Southern white boy who is successful in the red state.

Being from California, I love Newsom. He's a great governor. He knows his stuff, but I'm afraid he may come across as a bit too slick. No Shapiro. The Jewish thing is not worth the risk. No to a woman candidate at the top of the ticket. I would love to have a female president, but again, not worth the risk in this country right now. No to Wes Moore. He appears to be an attractive candidate, but he's black. I don't think we can take the chance.

Lastly, no to Buttigieg. He's brilliant, and I would like to see him run. But I want to win, and Pete is gay. Not work the risk. I'm gay too, but Pete or any other gay person will get wiped out for now. Maybe another time.

by Anonymousreply 93November 11, 2024 6:39 AM

Shapiro

by Anonymousreply 94November 11, 2024 6:59 AM

Fun go fantasize. But if you are old enough, remember 2004. Bush had just decisively won a second term, after previously eking an iffy at best election against a candidate who won the popular vote.

Bush told the country he had won a mandate and intended to use his political capital. Democrats, stunned by open exposure of spying and torture and incompetence, prepared for an authoritarian rule supported by right-wing control of election machines.

An Illinois state senator gave a great speech that year, and got elected as Senators. But he was black and his middle name was Hussein.

It’s ok to fantasize, both negatively and positive. It’s also ok to admit we just don’t know how this turns out. Don’t believe anyone who says they do.

That may depend on the popularity of the Trump presidency. I think Buttigieg has an uphill battle. Mike Duggan is loved by Black voters in Detroit. Buttigieg is not.

by Anonymousreply 115November 11, 2024 9:58 PM

I think it’s a mistake to count out Newsom. No, I don’t like him either. But it’s clearer than ever that a successful presidential campaign has so little to do with a candidate’s real experience, plans, or positions - and everything do with the public’s perceptions of the candidate.

A candidate wins the presidency not for being the best qualified, only for convincing most of the electorate s/he’s the best qualified.

Again, I’m not a fan of Newsom. He’s not even among my top ten choices. But I think he has the image, the marketability, the PR savvy, and the resources to wage a winning campaign. (Sad that those are the most important factors, but that is life in the idiocracy.)

by Anonymousreply 116November 11, 2024 10:06 PM

Newsom is over. I don't think he is electable. Maybe as a BP only

by Anonymousreply 117November 11, 2024 10:12 PM

Fetterman Pres, Ritchie Torres VP.... You get Pennsylvania, Hispanics, blacks and gay. Also obese people. Unbeatalbe.

by Anonymousreply 118November 11, 2024 10:17 PM

The left needs to stop obsessing over identity whether it be a purposeful minority or a reactionary “playing it safe”due to this defeat. Nominate the best fucking candidate with good ideas that excites the base. Hell in this day and age, they might need to be a bit of demagogue. We are in a post multinational world. Even flyover cunts have accepted this as it pertains to charisma and like-ability in a job role. Trump has completely changed the game for electoral politics.

Remember back in 2016 when he kept winning all those primaries and the GOP got increasingly scared and the democrats increasingly excited. You see where I am going with this.

by Anonymousreply 119November 11, 2024 10:36 PM

Newsome is a sleazeball. Isn’t California’s economy in the shitter now’? I don’t know, since I live on the East Coast. I think it has to be Andy Beshear - an “Aw Shucks” kind of guy. FFS, he is a two term Governor from a shithole Red State. Someone else mentioned what I’ve been saying….our first female POTUS will be a Republican, probably someone awful like Marsha Blackburn. I don’t think red state ‘murica is ready for a Jewish POTUS either, so that counts out Shapiro.

by Anonymousreply 120November 11, 2024 10:46 PM

Yeah, forget about it, there won't be a female president anytime soon, much less a gay one... Not in my lifetime

Gavin Newsom is the hot choice.

He has wanted this moment for years, desperately.

But he will not win, too many skeletons in his closet.

by Anonymousreply 123November 12, 2024 12:18 PM

I like Roy Cooper, but he's a bit too old.

by Anonymousreply 124November 12, 2024 2:49 PM

He'd be 71 in '28, R124. After Biden & Trump, he'd look like a kid.

by Anonymousreply 125November 12, 2024 2:58 PM

Martin Heinrich is POTUS material and is moderate. But, being from New Mexico would keep people from supporting him.

[bold]The Dark Knighting of Gavin Newsom has begun[/bold]

Gavin is currently in a bizarre marriage to a psycho lady. She attacks the women he cheats on her with. They have 4 kids, but you can tell he is definitely not father of the year. He has been cheating on his transactional spouse with his Deputy Chief of Staff since 2019.

And then there is KIM!

His love life is messy, but he is fucking HOT!

[bold]The Dark Knighting of Gavin Newsom has begun[/bold]

Interesting all of Gavin’s public significant others have all been Republicans.

Probably like a turn on for him.

[bold]The Dark Knighting of Gavin Newsom has begun[/bold]

Gavin is hot and aggressive, perfect combo for us to obsess.

He is a big time cheater and obviously wants to be POTUS.

Let Daddy Shine!

Is this real?

Gavin looks like sex in that pic.

[bold]The Dark Knighting of Gavin Newsom has begun[/bold]

Probably still if the rumors are true that he and the wife are living separate lives and he is fucking his aide.

Sounds presidential to me!

Gavin’s messy cheating affairs will do him in.

That article is gold, especially reading about a political arranged marriage.

Gavin having to ask the spouse if they have friends!!! The writer having to tell its a happy marriage. His weird interaction with the kids. She coming off more as a campaign political partner than spouse.

It’s all optics, baby!

by Anonymousreply 139November 12, 2024 11:21 PM

If the US wasn't such a misogynists country, I would be all in for a female nominee in 2028.

If the first woman president is a Republican, I hope it's a sane moderate type. But, then again knowing how fucked up things are it will probably end up being someone who is a major loon like MTG.

by Anonymousreply 140November 12, 2024 11:25 PM

R139 and that’s the reason why the Dems will lose. I’m not saying it has to be a woman. But just nominate the best person. The left always overreacts. And now we see with all the final numbers somewhat over the top bed wetting. Biden caused this shit. When the right loses do they change their fundamentals. No, they adapt and correct shit but they don’t alter fundamentals. To not nominate a woman because she is the best person who can win that the base wants is to give in to sexism. To not nominate an Asian man who might somehow come out of complete left field like Obama is to give in to racism. Stop being reactionary cunts. And be proactive.

by Anonymousreply 141November 12, 2024 11:28 PM

The Gen Alpha kids will be disgusted by their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and others in their lives who voted for Trump twice. They might be the ones to help a woman get elected president.

American presidential elections tend to be a zero-sum game for the parties and their voters. Win, and everything is great. Lose, and your party is rudderless, leaderless and powerless.

So it goes for the Democrats after Vice President Kamala Harris’s defeat to former President Donald J. Trump. Questions about who will lead the party, and in what direction, will be hotly debated as officials explore what went wrong and forge plans to oppose the next Trump administration.

Jockeying has already begun, and not all ambition may be rewarded. Appearing too eager to seize the opportunity presented by Ms. Harris’s defeat could backfire if Democrats are not ready to move forward. But if the period after the 2016 election is any guide, scores of Democratic figures and groups will try to fill the leadership void created as President Biden leaves office.

Four years is a very long time in politics. In that time, Barack Obama went from a state senator to a presidential nominee. In even less time than that, Mr. Trump transformed from being a reality show figure pushing a racist lie about Mr. Obama to president himself. It is not out of the question that the Democrats’ next leader is not someone on the nation’s radar today.

With those caveats, here’s a look at six groups of people who could determine which direction Democrats take as the second Trump administration unfolds.

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz

The last sitting vice president to lose a general election, Al Gore, waited more than two years before announcing he would not run for president again the next cycle. Until Ms. Harris says otherwise, she remains a top leader in her party, has control of its largest donor list, and maintains generally good relations with a wide array of supporters.

On the other hand, she ran a poor presidential campaign during the 2020 race, and Mr. Trump swept her in every battleground state this year. If she wanted to run again, she would probably need to win over skeptical Democrats with impressive showings in mainstream news interviews and town-hall events — forums where her performances this year were often cautious or halting.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, unlike Ms. Harris, has a day job to return to. He goes back to his state as a national figure — though he will lack the unified Democratic control of the State Legislature he enjoyed for the last two years.

There is little question that Mr. Walz’s ambition extends beyond Minnesota. Though he failed to stem Ms. Harris’s losses in rural areas, he remains well liked by fellow Democratic governors and former congressional colleagues. During a concession speech on Friday in Minnesota, he signaled that he was eager to remain relevant in the party.

“Get back in this fight when you’re ready,” he said. “And know that, whenever you’re ready to get back in that fight, I’ll be standing right here, ready to fight the fight with you.”

Ambitious governors Democrats have a deep bench of governors who are widely seen as influential party leaders.

They include Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Wes Moore of Maryland, Phil Murphy of New Jersey, Gavin Newsom of California, JB Pritzker of Illinois, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, among others.

Mr. Murphy is among the potential candidates to be the next chair of the Democratic National Committee who are now having discussions about running for that post. Mr. Newsom and Mr. Pritzker on Friday began the process of putting forward legislation to codify anti-Trump measures into their state laws.

Landrieu always intrigued me. He has big Mack Daddy energy. I get the argument for him. He should put himself forward next primary season. I don't know if he's the answer or not but I don't rule him out. Never have. If Carville's floating him, there's a reason, even this early.

by Anonymousreply 155November 13, 2024 1:26 PM

Mr. Shapiro, who was a finalist to become Ms. Harris’s running mate and emerged politically unscathed from this year’s election, remains focused on the needs of Pennsylvanians, according to a spokesman. That was evidenced by his aides on Monday promoting a local news story about at least 64 new jobs in a county where Mr. Trump won two-thirds of the vote last week.

Mr. Pritzker is also taking in the new political landscape.

“When you’re not in the Oval Office anymore and your party’s not in the Oval Office anymore, the focus and the locus of power moves and it gets spread out,” he said in an interview on Monday. “I’m not going to tell you where it will land or what I think, because I don’t know.”

Biden cabinet members

Pete Buttigieg, Mr. Biden’s transportation secretary, and Gina Raimondo, the commerce secretary, are longtime favorites of Democratic donors, and they both spent a lot of time — in their “personal capacity,” of course — stumping for Mr. Biden and then for Ms. Harris.

Mr. Buttigieg remains one of the party’s most gifted communicators, particularly on television, where he was often dispatched to explain its policies and positions on Fox News, an assignment many fellow Democrats declined.

Ms. Raimondo, a former Rhode Island governor, was seen as a rising star in the Biden cabinet, but she is far better known in Washington circles and by donors than among the party’s base.

Prominent senators Democrats will be in the minority for at least two years, and the odds of passing the party’s desired bills are pretty slim. So attention-hungry Democratic senators will have to focus instead on cable news hits and popular liberal podcasts.

These lawmakers include Senators Cory Booker of New Jersey, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Mark Kelly of Arizona, Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Raphael Warnock of Georgia.

Ms. Duckworth was vetted in Mr. Biden’s vice-presidential search in 2020, and Mr. Kelly was a finalist to be Ms. Harris’s running mate this year. Mr. Fetterman has transformed from a progressive hero into a leading voice of the party’s moderates, while Mr. Murphy is its Senate champion for gun control measures. Mr. Warnock is perhaps the party’s most gifted orator serving in office.

All are between 51 and 60 years old — spring chickens in the Senate — and are as well positioned as anyone in the party to speak to the young voters who have backed away from Democrats since 2020.

Progressives

On the other hand, the candidate who did the best with young voters in the last two competitive Democratic primary contests was Senator Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent who was just re-elected at 83 years old.

Mr. Sanders very much wants to steer the party toward his vision of politics, which is at odds with the donor and corporate interests that often rule the day, even if his age means he has run his last national election. A spokeswoman for Mr. Sanders said he intended to remain involved in guiding the party’s direction but declined to speculate on his future plans.

Other liberals who fit roughly into the Sanders milieu include Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ro Khanna of California and Pramila Jayapal of Washington State and Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Jeff Merkley of Oregon.

One other name to expect to hear a lot more from next year is Representative Greg Casar of Texas, who is expected to succeed Ms. Jayapal as chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

“Progressives in Congress the next two years really need to focus on pushing popular economic issues where liberals, conservatives and independent Americans agree with us over people like Donald Trump,” Mr. Casar said in an interview last week.

by Anonymousreply 156November 13, 2024 1:27 PM

Celebrities, billionaires and other fantasy candidates

When Mr. Trump won in 2016, Democrats floated all manner of celebrities and ultrawealthy people as possible presidential contenders.

An Oprah Winfrey candidacy was the dream for the party. Mark Zuckerberg had onetime aides to Mr. Obama arrange a private tour of the country. The billionaires Tom Steyer and Michael R. Bloomberg spent many millions to run for president in the 2020 race, efforts that paid off handsomely for their consultants but hardly for the candidates.

This time, there will undoubtedly be new calls for Michelle Obama to become more vocal in the party. Howard Schultz, the former Starbucks chief executive, considered running for president as an independent candidate in 2020.

The billionaire Mark Cuban, who was an energetic supporter of Ms. Harris on the campaign trail, has previously expressed interest in running himself.

The country might even hear again about presidential ambitions from the actor Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock, who in 2017 suggested he was interested.

by Anonymousreply 157November 13, 2024 1:28 PM

And no VP candidate named "Tim"!

by Anonymousreply 158November 13, 2024 1:31 PM

I thought Kamala ran a good campaign given everything against her, but I don't think it was good enough or memorable enough to consider her having first dibs on the next nomination. I wonder if her weaknesses will improve. She can get tangled up trying to please everybody in every answer, so she either keeps making word salad or gets comfortable taking positions she can explain simply, but piss some people off. Plus, apparently, she's very incrementalist and conservative with risk taking when it comes to campaign tactics and strategies. She could get outmanoeuvred again in the primaries. She might be well suited to angling to become the next Pelosi. God knows the current one is past her best by date.

by Anonymousreply 159November 13, 2024 1:32 PM

To TRULY decide I think we need to have a cock comparison competition between the nominees.

by Anonymousreply 160November 13, 2024 1:33 PM

Landrieu needs to go for Senate in 2026. Bill Cassidy is not going to get the nom in a MAGA world. Picking up Louisiana would be quite a coup.

by Anonymousreply 162November 13, 2024 1:49 PM

He might be able to do it, too, R161. That's a good idea for him. I just don't think Carville was floating names for the fun of it. Something's up... not to say anything will come of it.

by Anonymousreply 163November 13, 2024 1:49 PM

Dems will have their own civil war - which I am not saying is a bad thing. But the progressives won't be packed off without a fight, even if most of the establishment is centrist.

by Anonymousreply 164November 13, 2024 1:50 PM

R162, yes. Democrats have zero path to the Senate if they can’t compete in more states. It just got worse because of losses in PA, but also red states like OH and MT.

by Anonymousreply 165November 13, 2024 1:56 PM

A Tim Ryan-JD Vance rematch, writ large.

by Anonymousreply 166November 13, 2024 2:12 PM
Democrats have zero path to the Senate if they can’t compete in more states.

I get that, which is why retaking the Senate is a bigger challenge than retaking the White House. But I'd look to states more like Kansas than Louisiana, which has only become more red over time.

by Anonymousreply 167November 13, 2024 2:16 PM

Newsome is way too far left. We need a candidate that represents a unified Democratic Party.

by Anonymousreply 169November 13, 2024 4:02 PM

And he wouldn't be "Gavin Newsom" under that scenario, R169.

by Anonymousreply 170November 13, 2024 4:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 171November 13, 2024 4:23 PM

Beshear just started his campaign:

Andy Beshear:

I’m the Governor of Kentucky. Here’s How Democrats Can Win Again.

Yes, there are a lot of big, important issues facing our country, but when families are struggling in these core areas, it’s hard to focus on or reach anything else. If you are staring at the cost of your child’s prescription and wondering how you are going to pay for both it and your family’s dinner, the offense of the day in Washington, D.C. or the latest crazy thing a politician said just isn’t as important.

by Anonymousreply 172November 13, 2024 5:49 PM

Fuck the establishment! We need a figure like Jon Stewart to rid us of MAGA. It’s funny how afraid of the progressive left moderates and right wingers are.

There has never been a true progressive president and all the reservations some of you have is because of the barrage of propaganda from the right wing and moderates who are bankrolled by billionaires.

Unfortunately I don’t think Jon wants to even make an attempt at a run, but if he were I definitely be knocking on doors for him.

by Anonymousreply 173November 13, 2024 6:19 PM

Jon Stewart is pals with MAGA veterans and first responders.

by Anonymousreply 174November 13, 2024 6:21 PM

R174 Jon cares about common people struggling, especially those who have been forgotten about by our government. The fact that he has right wing “pals” should tell you more about his charisma and appeal which so many of the people listed in OPs poll lack.

The state that has has some of the highest Real estate values in the country making middle class folks all millionaires? The state that has one of the LOWEST property taxes in the US? The state that supplies more than 30% of America's produce? Yeah what a terrible place to be. by Anonymousreply 193November 15, 2024 1:26 AM

The more I see him on TV the less I like him. He is off putting. Very earnest, and serious and he has that "deer in the headlights" look in his eyes. he seems like he has a fragile ego. The kind of guy who doesn't like his wimmin to contradict him and disagree. The kind of man who cries while he's beating his wife.

by Anonymousreply 195November 15, 2024 2:59 AM

R182 you’re tragically delusional. The “state with the highest real estate values in the country”? California is the state nobody can afford to buy a house in, except for a few tech bros.

The attack ads against Gavin Newsom will write themselves—the tent cities, the pathetic educational systems, trans legislation signed by Newsom that would freak most voters nationwide, the months-long fire seasons & electricity outages, the highest cost of living anywhere except NYC, the most expensive gasoline at $5/gal., the $45 billion budget deficit etc etc etc.

Not to mention his sordid personal history, incl fucking the wife of his friend/campaign manager, when he was SF mayor.

Republicans are DROOLING over the prospect of a Newsom candidacy.

by Anonymousreply 196November 15, 2024 4:41 AM

We have zero idea what the political landscape will be in 2027-28, so, while the parlor game is always fun, it's rather meaningless at this point.

by Anonymousreply 197November 15, 2024 4:46 AM

It needs to be someone under 50. The more I think about it just does. This is our 21st century JFK moment. It needs to be someone like him. Today’s version of that.

by Anonymousreply 198November 15, 2024 4:57 AM

R196

Plus Gavin has been having an affair with his staffer since 2018 when he was campaigning for Governor. Rumors say he may be the father of her child.

by Anonymousreply 199November 15, 2024 11:21 AM

But that’s the kind of street cred, R199, that would serve Newsom well in this era.

by Anonymousreply 200November 15, 2024 12:33 PM

Some people might not care if Newsom has a love child. MAGAts don't care that Trump was fucking a porn star while Melania was pregnant.

by Anonymousreply 201November 15, 2024 2:28 PM

R198, maybe you slept through the Obama years? That was it. That was the "moment" you're referring to.

by Anonymousreply 202November 15, 2024 3:30 PM

Many of the people who are floated around are already over 50 and a couple like Beshear and Moore will be turning 50 in the next few years. I think the Dems should focus on possible contenders who are maybe 38-55 for 2028.

by Anonymousreply 203November 15, 2024 3:46 PM

Gavin Newsom will be 61 in 2028.

by Anonymousreply 204November 15, 2024 4:13 PM

Don't you believe it. The only way to make Trump seem competent and look good is to drive Biden's approval numbers down. It justifies every lie Trump peddled. But Biden did a damned good job. And the sad thing is that fucker is going to get credit for a strong economy, and all the infrastructure projects and lower interest rates, etc. and Biden, they hope, will be erased. The Russia troll farms did a great job, and the mainstream media bullying him did the rest. I hate Trump. I thought Kamala did a great job, and I hope she runs again. Whether she does or not, whether it's someone else, we need to dismantle the propaganda machine that has us cannibalizing one another and buying the lies and acting on them. If we do not address the very real problem of the media ecosystem that got Trump elected, we will never see another Democratic POTUS. And that includes Starlink and Musk, Theil and the other assholes.

by Anonymousreply 205November 15, 2024 5:37 PM

Why is everyone desperately trying to make a Gen X candidate happen?

I say screw that MAGAT generation. They don't deserve the next Democrat nomination.

by Anonymousreply 211November 17, 2024 4:22 AM

If Trump 2.0 is as disastrous as I expect it to be, a ticket of Hillary/Kamala could sail to victory in ‘28.

by Anonymousreply 212November 17, 2024 4:49 AM

R212 why troll?

by Anonymousreply 213November 17, 2024 5:24 AM

Please. These people will all be in labor camps, deported, or executed in 4 years.

by Anonymousreply 214November 17, 2024 7:24 AM

R212, Absolutely no Democrat, high or low, wants either of those women on another ticket. And no to "Big Gretch," too. Frankly, no women need apply in 2028. I don't care about potential sketches on SNL.

Looking back, it appears that Covid-19 propelled the Biden/Harris pair to victory. And because that threat seems almost gone, Trump re-won, bigly. With a White Guy running mate

Democrats offered a mixed-race candidate with a down-home White guy, and lost. After intense lobbying of the Hispanic/Latino demographic. After cozying up to "sane" Republicans, even offering to appoint one to the Harris Administration. After making women's healthcare top priority, thinking who doesn't have a mother, never mind sister, wife, daughter, gf, colleague, etc.?

After proposing help with housing, small business, education, healthcare, etc.

But what issues were more persuasive? Not help. Not healthcare. Not education. No.

Fear. Revulsion. Antipathy.

2016 went for the new. 2020 went for hope. 2024 decided that it was time for White Supremacy.

The perfect outcome for the month in which we celebrate our Original White Christian Supremacist forefathers, the Mayflower Puritans.

by Anonymousreply 215November 17, 2024 7:33 AM

My point was not to advocate an all-female ticket, even one with a women at the top (which I do not favor), but to argue against this doomsday feeling Democrats have adopted since the election. Nothing cures Democrats' electoral issues more than Trump being in office.

by Anonymousreply 216November 17, 2024 12:48 PM
Nothing cures Democrats' electoral issues more than Trump being in office.

Agreed. Just when the pendulum swings to create opportunity for Democrats to limit the damage in government, will they move in increments or will we get back to the same checklist-based circular firings squads about whose turn it is now?

You can be the party of "help" and "inclusion" and "justice" and all the aspects of progressivism that will create good outcomes. But you don't talk about them like moral imperatives to Americans. That's selling them terms they're not interested in. The country is too hard hearted. If you want to make change and progress, sell it by making the case for how it puts another dollar in your pocket.

by Anonymousreply 217November 17, 2024 3:02 PM

Just the one, dear?

by Anonymousreply 218November 17, 2024 3:23 PM

Obviously Newsom. It's a no brainer. None of those others listed by OP have a chance.

by Anonymousreply 219November 17, 2024 3:29 PM

R217, What about Kamala's economic "help for the Middle Class and aspirants thereto" proposals did you not understand?

by Anonymousreply 220November 17, 2024 3:32 PM

R216, Your r212 sounds pretty darn all-female specific to me as written, for a different inference to be drawn. Maybe you just needed a few more words....

by Anonymousreply 221November 17, 2024 3:39 PM

R220, I understood it. Just not enough people bought it. Your butt hurt is showing.

by Anonymousreply 222November 17, 2024 3:40 PM
[R216], Your [R212] sounds pretty darn all-female specific to me as written, for a different inference to be drawn.

And what inference was that, R221? I was merely exaggerating, for effect, how disastrous the new administration will for the electoral future of republicans.

by Anonymousreply 223November 17, 2024 3:50 PM

R221 is just looking for trouble where none exists. The inference was plain.

by Anonymousreply 224November 17, 2024 4:22 PM

Kamala had a brilliant campaign and her policy prescriptions were very well put together. Economist endorsed the economic policies in particular. So what we should do is take everything she proposed, and all her initiatives, and repackage them, and let a man say them. We can script it for Tom Hanks....or Andy Beshear. Because then the woman haters will listen.

He'll be 65 in '28, R234. A baby in today's presidential politics.

by Anonymousreply 235November 20, 2024 6:50 PM

He also was the inspiration for the mayor of Baltimore on The Wire.

by Anonymousreply 236November 20, 2024 6:55 PM

Imma repeat this. It doesn't matter who they run. It is the disinformation campaign we have to address. The lies the distortions and the collusion of the media. Ever since Ronald Reagan go the "Reagan Democrats" in the labor unions to vote against their own interests, it has been clear that unchecked propaganda, actually brainwashing, to a dumbed down electorate, can convince voters to vote for a literal pile of shit. The Republicans weaponized the low information voters. And they did it in part by busting labor unions that used to educate their workforce about issues and candidates that would help or harm them. Both Biden and Harris were attempting to rebuild the union's influence, but they ran out of time. And the deregulation of the FCC under Reagan, and other reverses with social media unchecked, did t he rest. It pisses me off that every fucking time we make a few gains, those fuckers come in and reverse everything.

by Anonymousreply 237November 20, 2024 7:18 PM

How is Martin O'Malley "too old"?

People over 72 running for president is ridiculous...under that, it's fine.

by Anonymousreply 238November 20, 2024 10:24 PM

R238 It must be a millenial. We have to recapture the youth that we almost lost by a majority. We need new, freshness, perhaps not a long career in Washington.

by Anonymousreply 239November 20, 2024 10:54 PM

Well, go find a Millennial who has made any kind of real political mark. And, isn't one of your boring whitebread, "cute" governors.

We're waiting....

by Anonymousreply 240November 20, 2024 10:58 PM

R237 Well if you want to recapture the unions, you don’t fucking have a sit down interview with a 6 foot tall tranny talking bout how taxpayer money will be spent on prison transitions. I can’t believe my girl ever went that route. It’s ridiculous. Especially since half of them are going to lie, no true trans, just so they can be in a female prison. Why can’t democrats be as impassioned as spending taxpayer money on increasing literacy rates of black school children.

by Anonymousreply 241November 20, 2024 10:59 PM

Wes Moore 2028

by Anonymousreply 242November 20, 2024 11:00 PM

R241, no you restore manufacturing jobs and acknowledge the unions and promote the unions, and make t hem part of the economic recovery conversation and the Infrastructure conversation which is exactly what Biden and Harris did. As f or allowing Trans medical care for transitioning even if they're incarcerated, so what? Who the fuck is it affecting? Did one of those trans pee in your cornflakes? Fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 243November 21, 2024 12:05 AM

R243 maybe I’m being a bit histrionic but optics are everything. And they did do a lot of great things.

by Anonymousreply 244November 21, 2024 12:07 AM

R243 And it is affecting us because we are paying for it. If they were a law abiding citizen too broke to transition what the fuck would they do. Certainly not use taxpayer money.

R246 she was a damned good candidate. I would support her.

by Anonymousreply 248November 21, 2024 3:20 PM

Here’s an interesting question: how many times, the past 50 years, was the Dem nominee on everybody’s short list way back in the weeks after the prior presidential election? Not counting incumbents.

At quick glance it’s a 50/50 split, with Obama one extreme, DNC speech newbie 2004 vs D nominee 2008, and Hillary and Joe on the other extreme as total known entitles. It’s certain that a few of these names on OP’s poll will compete vigorously for the 2028 nomination. Or…. we might be in a mood to leap to someone even newer.

by Anonymousreply 249November 21, 2024 3:32 PM

R248, an old Adlai Stevenson supporter, I'm sure. Even in his nascent '60 campaign.

by Anonymousreply 250November 21, 2024 3:34 PM

The flaw wasn't the candidate. Kamala was poetry in motion, IMO. It was the campaign's failure, being unprepared for that wall of disinformation that literally swamped the campaign and saturated the media, both legacy media and social media, in the final ten days. How could they not know Elon was allowing Starlink into the picture? How could they not expect and prepare for the attacks? She was ready. She was constantly responding to identifiable concerns. But in a campaign, you have to be ready for the Hail Mary pass, the final push, the "kitchen sink" phase. The GOP knows how to sell. They know voter behavior, and they are relentless. And they do not engage in circular firing squads and shit on themselves in public. GOP never admits defeat. Ever. They keep fighting and keep pitching and their strategy is to never surrender. All the so called Dem professional campaign operatives and pundits could learn something from that. Republicans didn't just talk about inflation and immigration during the campaign cycle. They were pitching it for almost t wo years or more. And advertisers for various products even used inflation in pitching their wares. Inflation was part of the discussion everywhere. That's just one example. All those months when Joe was talking about how great things were it made him seem clueless. Out of touch. (And he was!)

by Anonymousreply 251November 21, 2024 3:44 PM
The flaw wasn't the candidate. Kamala was poetry in motion, IMO.

Outside of a prepared speech or a debate, which she handled flawlessly, she had nothing really to say.

by Anonymousreply 252November 21, 2024 3:48 PM

R251 Republicans didn't just talk about inflation and immigration during the campaign cycle. They were pitching it for almost t wo years or more. And advertisers for various products even used inflation in pitching their wares. Inflation was part of the discussion everywhere. That's just one example. All those months when Joe was talking about how great things were it made him seem clueless. Out of touch.

Preach my friend. As soon as the GOP loses, they think about how to demonize the other side for the next 4 years. We need to start doing that. Fuck the people. I mean it’s ultimately for their good because we will have more consistent success.

by Anonymousreply 253November 21, 2024 4:50 PM

Dems get the basics on policy prescriptions and issues. But it seems like they're clueless about voter behavior. Voters are never happy with the economy. They always feel like they're paying too much for everything. They all suffer from job insecurity. They believe talking about inflation or "the economy" makes them sound smart.

On immigration, when W was POTUS in 2007 he tried to get legislation passed on a comprehensive immigration bill and his own party defeated it. And yesterday, on the news, I saw video of a massive caravan, marching from Mexico to the U.S. border and the announcer claimed they "wanted to get in before Biden leaves office." It really wasn't about issues. It was about manipulating voters. And no one does that better than the GOP.

by Anonymousreply 254November 21, 2024 7:38 PM

Trump lost, and HE ran again, so....

by Anonymousreply 255November 21, 2024 10:22 PM

R254 Dems are very analytical. After a few successes they forget that elections are primarily an emotional response. Basic iq people don’t deal with data: they deal with emotions and sentiments.

by Anonymousreply 256November 21, 2024 10:32 PM

Let me digress for a moment? Speaking of W, he was t he guy who let the Assault weapons ban expire and refused to allow it to be renewed. He was the guy who gave us John Roberts as Chief of SCOTUS. I t think he dropped Alito on us too. And Brett Kavanaugh worked in his White House and was the guy who helped John Roberts prep and get through his confirmation hearings. In point of fact, W is the guy who allowed the Federalist Society to be the sole vetting and screening process . They made a list and they recommended Judicial candidates. He turned the federal judicial nominating process over to the Federalist Society. Prior to that, the Bar associations rated candidates and screened them .

by Anonymousreply 257November 22, 2024 5:11 AM

Bush gave us Alito only after his first choice, Harriet Miers, was withdrawn due to his party's objections.
