SNL's Michael Che: ‘If White People Can Elect Their Felon, I Can Dance to Mine’

For his first “Weekend Update” segment following Donald Trump’s victory on Tuesday, co-anchor Michael Che appeared to raid his liquor cabinet.

“How did I let y’all convince me that rural Pennsylvania would pick the Jamaican Indian lady?” Che lamented before reaching under his desk for a glass of brown liquid. “Clearly, I’ve been spending too much time around white liberals and their goofy optimism. It wasn’t even close. At one point, Trump was so far ahead, they put in Bronny,” he added, referring to NBA superstar LeBron James’ son and current teammate on the Los Angeles Lakers.

Che’s comedic partner Colin Jost got in his own jabs at the president-elect, mocking Trump’s promise of a golden age for America (“Things turn golden when the sun is setting on them”) and comparing Vice President-elect JD Vance’s experience as an adult Catholic convert to his own past as a teenage altar boy. But Che landed the night’s most provocative lines by referencing R&B star and convicted sexual abuser R. Kelly.

“Y’all gonna let a man with 34 felonies lead the free world and be the president of the United States? That’s it, I’m listening to R. Kelly again,” Che cracked, continuing to wield his drink as a prop. “I already do, but I’m gonna stop pretending I don’t. If white people can elect their felon, I can dance to mine.”

Che closed the segment’s topical portion by addressing Trump’s historic appeal among working class voters, pointing out the 10 wealthiest people on Earth quickly gained about $60 billion of wealth after the election. “Yup, the richest people immediately got richer. But don’t worry, I’m sure yours is coming soon, Earl!”

He's absolutely right.

This election has set a precedent for having the "moral high ground" in this country.

Trump's election has made a mockery of the judicial system.

Why should anyone give a fuck about laws in this country, if a convicted felon can run for the highest office in the land, win the election, and also make billions of dollars on top of that?

The answer is... no one should give a fuck about the laws in this country.

Clearly, crime pays.

And this fact has become most painfully obvious to African Americans.
‘If White People Can Elect Their Felon, I Can Dance to Mine’

It wasn't just white people who elected Trump.

by Anonymousreply 2November 10, 2024 4:36 PM

So he’s saying that Kamala is a felon. No wonder this show is completely irrelevant now.

by Anonymousreply 3November 10, 2024 4:42 PM

He's saying that Trump is a felon, you fuckwit.

by Anonymousreply 4November 10, 2024 4:51 PM

The majority were, R2.

Of the total number of people who voted for Trump in 2024:

84% White 3% Black 8% Hispanic 4% Other

15% between 18-29 24% between 45-64

And get this: 38% of Trump voters have a Bachelor's Degree or Higher.

Trump got nearly 75,000,000 votes.

That means 63,000,000 white people voted for him.

That means 11,250,000 GenZ'ers voted for him.

That means 18,000,000 GenX'ers voted for him.

And that means 28,500,000 people with Bachelor's Degrees or higher, voted for him.

Those stats are extremely depressing.

Wow Gen Zers aren't that far behind Gen Xers in numbers. Crazy.

by Anonymousreply 6November 10, 2024 4:58 PM

This chart on "how voters saw the candidates" proves that American voters are idiots and fucked up in the head.

Kamala Harris got higher marks than Donald Trump in these categories:

"Looks out for people like you." "Mentally capable." "Moral character."

And yet they STILL voted for Donald Trump.

What does that say about Americans?

Trump doubled his support with black men from 2020. Even if it's a small percentage overall, that is significant. And considering Trump has absolutely nothing to offer black people and can only hurt them, the percentage voting for him should be zero.

by Anonymousreply 8November 10, 2024 5:32 PM

"Black Men Are Not The Problem"

by Anonymousreply 9November 10, 2024 5:36 PM

Not “the” problem, but part of the problem.

by Anonymousreply 10November 10, 2024 5:45 PM

Going forward, every time someone white talks about morality, crime, and/or patriotism, please do your best, 'gurl, please,' snap, and then walk away. The, let's bring back Cosby Show reruns to Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 11November 10, 2024 5:46 PM

From the demographics chart at the link, we can see that:

Of the 71,000,000 who voted for Kamala:

66% were white = 46,860,000

17% were black = 12,070,000

11% were latino = 7,810,000

6% were other = 4,260,000

Of the 75,000,000 who voted for Trump:

84% were white = 63,000,000

3% were black = 2,250,000

8% were latino = 6,000,000

4% were other = 3,000,000

9,750,000 more black people voted for Harris than Trump.

1,810,000 more latino people voted for Harris than Trump

1,260,000 more "other races" voted for Harris than Trump

Even though more minority voters voted for Trump this year, the stats show that [bold]minorities STILL chose Harris over Trump in every demographic.[/bold]

The only demographic that chose Trump over Harris? WHITE PEOPLE.

[bold]16,140,000 more white people voted for Trump than for Harris.[/bold]

This is what Michael Che was talking about.

by Anonymousreply 13November 10, 2024 5:51 PM

R8 Trump didn't double his support with all black men, just the youngest ones. So you should be asking why did men elect Trump?

But it's better to focus on the blacks and latinos as the problem instead of the group that elected Trump, which probably includes you.

by Anonymousreply 14November 10, 2024 5:54 PM

Wow, so he's saying white people are racist. What a shocking discovery. News at 11.

by Anonymousreply 15November 10, 2024 5:55 PM
Trump doubled his support with black men from 2020. Even if it's a small percentage overall, that is significant. And considering Trump has absolutely nothing to offer black people and can only hurt them, the percentage voting for him should be zero.

Yeah he doubled it from barely nothing to just barely nothing. 😂 Give me a fucking break. You know good and damn well W H I T E P E O P L E put Trump in office but since you’re white and everybody you love and are attracted to is white, you can’t place the blame where it belongs.

by Anonymousreply 16November 10, 2024 6:01 PM

Oh, look at r14, the white liberal, here right on cue running to defend the very groups that hate him. I hope you know white people are in favor of gay rights and same sex marriage, more than any other group.

by Anonymousreply 17November 10, 2024 6:04 PM

By a mile, r17

by Anonymousreply 18November 10, 2024 6:05 PM

r16, can you tell me what Trump has to offer those black men who voted for him? I'm waiting.

by Anonymousreply 19November 10, 2024 6:08 PM

Yeah, white people love gay rights and same sex marriage so much they voted en masse to give us a Supreme Court which might soon vaporize both.

by Anonymousreply 20November 10, 2024 6:08 PM

R19 Can you tell me what Trump has to offer poor white people? I'm waiting.

by Anonymousreply 21November 10, 2024 6:09 PM
can you tell me what Trump has to offer those black men who voted for him? I'm waiting.

What does Trump have to offer the millions of poor white men who voted for him, R19? The fuck. 😂

by Anonymousreply 22November 10, 2024 6:10 PM
Yeah, white people love gay rights and same sex marriage so much they voted en masse to give us a Supreme Court which might soon vaporize both.

Without white people there never would've been gay rights or same sex marriage.

by Anonymousreply 23November 10, 2024 6:12 PM

Keep making everything about race, and we’ll continue to lose.

The “black women are always right” party isn’t electable, it turns out.

Ger back to running on ideas, not identities.

by Anonymousreply 27November 10, 2024 6:20 PM
Without white people there never would've been gay rights or same sex marriage.

Without black people there never would’ve been gay rights or same sex marriage. Every election the Democrats won over the past 50 years has been due to black people. Without black folks, there wouldn’t be a single liberal on the Supreme Court right now.
Project 2025 and Republicans will ensure that "free and fair elections" are a thing of the past.

I’m glad you brought this up, because as it turns out, the “democracy is on the ballot” line didn’t resonate. It might be true, but it didn’t land with the majority of voters. It was bad political strategy and as a result, we are now in a situation where democracy is indeed under serious threat. Irony.
But keep dreaming, Mary.

Thanks, I will! This is my country too, and yours, and I don’t think we should give up on it yet. But I also don’t think that “Americans are just racist” is a good answer to our problems right now. It’s a dodge designed to make people on our side feel superior and absolved of any need to look at where we might have gone wrong and how to fix it. It’s the exact opposite of what we need right now.

by Anonymousreply 35November 10, 2024 6:30 PM

Please. It's well known how homophobic the black community is. This isn't even open for debate.

And the white community outside of New York and California isn’t so open to the gays, either. You’ve got entire states in the middle of this country and down south filled with white people who hate gays but you conveniently ignore them because you’d gladly get on your knees for those good ol’ boys if they’d let you.

I’ve noticed news articles about there being a smaller college-ready cohort of teenagers available to consider enrolling in higher education in this current generation, because there are less teenagers who were born 17-21 years ago this time around. Thinking that through, no matter who voted for either or any candidate, there were probably fewer to do so in their particular younger cohort this presidential election. And also if the adults in the last generation who didn’t have as many kids might have turned out to have been liberal-leaning, career-focused and college-educated individuals, then those younger people who voted might have majorly been right-leaning ones from more rural or blue-collar backgrounds who did continue to have kids who ended up showing up in greater numbers within their overall 2024-smaller demographic cohort—and voting more for Trump as a result, at that.

by Anonymousreply 41November 10, 2024 6:42 PM

Yes, there is a homophobia problem in black and Latin communities, but that doesn't change the fact that every time our community is at risk, white people seem to vote overwhelmingly against us. What's worse, some black guy calling you the f-word or a bunch of white people voting against your basic rights?

by Anonymousreply 42November 10, 2024 6:49 PM

I woke up so fucking angry this morning! I finally popped my head out of the specific sand referred to as denial.

I cannot believe Americans decided to risk EVERYTHING AGAIN for this man, including their healthcare, their financial stability as well as completely fracturing families for good.

Personally? I haven’t slept through an entire evening, nor have I been able to go to the bathroom successfully in over a week. I knew this fucker would win again, & my body is a total wreck as a result. I feel completely helpless & feel that we’ve all been deeply betrayed by the same people who I personally believe deserved an opportunity to experience success, a good life and one for their children, as well.

It all meant jack shit to these people. They failed to understand that immigrants, pronouns & gender identification means NOTHING when the rubber meets the road & average Americans begin struggling in order to pay for utilities or buying food, and being forced to choose between one of the two.

Stable economy? Affordable healthcare? Lowest unemployment rates in history?

Nope! We hate women, minorities & drag queens more than we appreciate living an affordable life.

I need to stop before I experience a heart attack or something.

Blue MAGA hats lol.

Liberals who have spent the days since the election putting their blue MAGA hats on and blaming minorities for shifting to Trump are proving they are the most out of touch Americans out there after cable news pundits, as their paternalistic vision of politics and their ironclad belief that Democrats are entitled to minority votes is one giant example of how the MSNBC liberal misunderstands America. Minority voters are Americans just like anyone else, and they are affected by the ebbs and flows of the economy more than the average cable news viewer who is generally whiter, older and more well-off. Biden may have governed in a way that helped poorer folks, but he failed to make a political case for his policies, and many associated Bidenomics with inflation, as the Biden and Harris teams refused to see that term the same way that voters did.
