Dead Porn Star Erik Rhodes
I was just thinking about him this morning. And the total psych meltdown blog he maintained in the year or two before he died. The blog, taken down by family after he died, was unusual and a few Dataloungers used to regularly bring the worst of it here for our entertainment. Most of it was the chronicled life and inner dumping ground of a ridiculously sad hot mess, but randomly his outpourings were insightful in an offbeat, trenchant way.
Erik (real name James) died from heart attack at only age 30 after a decade of rampant steroid abuse. His body was incredible when he first arrived on the porn scene in the mid 2000s, though obviously he was juiced to the hilt even then. Seven or eight years later he was dead.
In porn Erik was unusual for being a hyper-muscled, over-proportioned 6 foot 3 "masc" giant who was gay in real life and who loved to get fucked down good.

I remember reading his blog as well as many accounts of people who had met him (quite a few of them here on the DL), and he invariably came across as an unintelligent, arrogant, boisterous cretin with anger issues and a strong self-destructive streak, who had gone into porn and escorting because he was basically too dumb and lazy to do anything else. Yes, there were moments of introspection, but they came across as an egotist's self-pity rather than genuine self-reflection.
He had made lots of money and completely wasted it on stupid nonsense, was high or drunk most of the time (in fact, he often wrote about how he'd wake up in a stranger's house and couldn't remember where he was, or what had happened the previous day) and by the time he was pushing thirty he started showing signs of depression. Also, he was quite unhappy about being gay and frequently said that he wished he weren't so, even mentioning that when he "realized" he was gay, he broke down crying. Needless to say, he was constantly whining about how superficial, sex-centered, drug-addicted and hedonistic gay people are, conveniently forgetting the fact that he was just the same.
So yes OP, the combination of heavy steroid use, long term drug and alcohol addiction and a perpetual party lifestyle led him to an early grave. I also think that his self-destructive tendencies stemmed from the fact that he hated himself for being gay. It's sad that his was a wasted life but, alas, nobody forced him to do so.

I personally have known 2 men who died of complications & illnesses caused by steroid abuse. They were both under the ages of 40-45.
