I don’t know anyone who supports Trump. All my friends, colleagues, professional contacts across the nation—Harris voters all. While voting records show that some people in the area voted for Trump, there were no Trump signs in my Boston neighborhood. I’m curious to know from my fellow DLers what it’s like to live otherwise.

It's like living in a mental institution. I don't live there now but I used to live in violently antigay areas where anytime gay rights advanced anywhere some triggered bigot would physically attack me in a rage. This happened multiple times, and never for anything I did, always because some gay somewhere won a court case so they just wanted to hurt a gay.

Now that Trump's been elected, permission has been given to the assholes here in Deplorable Haven to do whatever the fuck they want. Again. Gunshots already this morning (7 AM); a loud air boat blowing back and forth behind my place (I live next to a swamp). Yesterday, a neighbor's deadbeat unemployed 30-year-old who'd moved back in with Mommy (with his gf) sold his race car, but not before he'd made the neighborhood sound like a NASCAR race track. It was so loud another of my white trash neighbors actually bitched to me about it.
It has begun. A Trump presidency means a free-for-all for every white boy with a white trash heritage. And all the other MAGA white men as well.
Me? I'm busy trying to get the paperwork I need to emigrate. Slowly but surely.

OP is likely a troll but I live in philly and work in NYC and I agree. I see rarely people who would vote for trump. there are still harris signs up in windows in my neighborhood. NPR bumperstickers instead of NRA. I travel for work and do go to places outside of the northeast corridor, sometimes I'm shocked, others not. i'm curious though

"I’ve seen Trump signs up all over Philly."
Especially in Northeast Philly. The further north you go on Roosevelt Boulevard, the more MAGAt it becomes.
And Lower Bucks County, i.e. Bensalem, Morrisville, Levittown, Bristol, etc. is MAGAt central, which is why Trump and the Republicans carried Bucks County for the first time in years.
And while we're on the subject of Pennsylvania, all I have been hearing for the past few election cycles was Pennsylvanians disgruntled by the shipment of American manufacturing jobs overseas. So why the hell did they just vote for the guy who made billions of dollars for himself outsourcing jobs overseas?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 10, 2024 4:39 PM |

I'm in a reliably blue state that nearly flipped. My middle to upper middle class town will have voted for Trump. The town is cute, clean, safe. Strong police presence. No crime, no homelessness etc. And I can't imagine it's large Hispanic population voting for Harris.
The shithole cities in my county and neighboring country voted Dem. They always do.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 10, 2024 5:03 PM |
I live in Trumplandia in Western PA, not too far from the Trump assassination attempt in Butler, PA. I actually see fewer Trump signs here than I did in 2016 or 2020. Trump obviously won here but Kamala actually received more total votes in my county than Biden did

You know very little about American cities.
Just look at neighborhoods in NYC. Tribeca, the black population is 2.2%. Upper East Side: 4,3%. West Village 2%.
My small rural town is more diverse.

Suburbia is unsustainable, yet we continue to delude ourselves that the American dream is to live in a single-family house with a yard and white picket fence. Between 2000 and 2020, urban land area in the US grew by 14%. As of April 2020, over 86% of Americans lived in metropolitan areas, which includes counties that are adjacent to or include major cities with populations of 50,000 or more. That's an all-time high.
Suburbanites and bridge-and-tunnel commuters may turn their noses up at "city people," but economic centers are the lifeblood of the American economy. Whether in a townhouse, condo, or McMansion, the vast majority of Americans live in big city-centric economies.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 10, 2024 6:42 PM |

I moved from a red bubble in Florida to a blue bubble in Massachusetts.
You all can argue all you want about what's real and what isn't, but when the shitty effects of this nightmarish election spreads, I'll still be a lot happier in my blue bubble than I ever was in my red bubble. I'll probably also be a lot better off and a lot safer.
Some of the effects are bound to filter down to me somehow, but I'm a hell of a lot better off here. And I'm really tired of trying to understand the economic anxieties and ignorance of the other side, and the effects of Republican propaganda. I just want to eke out some sort of a life amidst the coming dystopia.
If that makes me unrealistic, and somehow less because I don 't recognize and live amongst real America, I am fine with that.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 10, 2024 7:29 PM |
I don’t know any MAGAs personally and I scrupulously avoid letting my sentiments about them be known. I’m surrounded by them as neighbors and that’s bad enough. My county and state went Democrat in the presidential race but you wouldn’t know it if you looked only at the yard signs, bumper stickers, and attitudes.

We were very fortunate to have the means to move from Florida to Massachusetts. Very fortunate.
We were both originally from the northeast - Florida was a detour - and since we trusted that if and when the shit hit the fan, our best bet would be Massachusetts, that's what we did.

I went to a very conservative private Christian school and then changed course and went to very liberal public universities for undergraduate and graduate degrees in a different state. It’s funny, because so many on here when we spoke on our anecdotal evidence, obviously it’s not science but we were always called trolls. The red bubbles are far more airtight than the blue bubbles.
That's why they attacked the Capitol last time, those people couldn't believe Biden had won because they were utterly surrounded by fellow Trumpoids and couldn't conceive of Biden having won the election without cheating.
(Also, just to repeat this for the umpteenth time, FBI statistics show violent crime is higher in Republican voting areas than Democratic voting areas, including the major cities.)

I have relatives who live in rural eastern Oregon (the part that wants to secede and join Idaho). Visiting them is always a trip outside the blue bubble because a lot of their neighbors are old hippies or weed growers, and the rest is MAGA trash. Not just Trump signs, but thinly veiled white supremacy flags, signs supporting Oath Keepers and Three Percenters and I don't know what else. These are usually in front of small houses on a lot of land, filled up with old trucks, refrigerators, and all kinds of garbage on the lawn.
They drove me past one neighbor's house which was adorned with TRUMP 2024 flags, as well as the Three Percent flag and a modified "COME AND TAKE IT" flag and others with guns on them. They were lit with industrial-grade spotlights 24/7 and had very visible cameras pointed at them.
And my relatives said that the neighbors take any and every chance to shoot off machine guns and AR-15s just to make noise and show that they can.

Retired to South Jersey, 55+, near water. I like living in my community, but step outside and you are in Trump USA. The palpable feeling of elation in the Trumpers here cannot be denied. The population here is a mix of older retired many of whom are well off, older poor, blue collar and shore trash. They ride around with their Trump emblazoned cars, wear the hats, American flags abound.
My cleaning lady is Jersey shore born and bred, she and all her friends and family voted for Trump. I had one conversation about it earlier this year. She just spewed maga talking points, mainly about illegal migrants, cost of groceries, and transgender bs. When I mentioned Trump's conviction, his other charges, J6 she said it was all cooked up by Dems. And besides, all politicians are crooks and all businessmen bend the law.

OK -- here's my latest encounter.
Yesterday I went into (what they call) the Tax and Tag office to pay my property taxes, and it was crowded. Take a number and wait. I sat down in an empty chair next to what I thought was a typical white trash older woman (scraggly long blonde hair, droopy breasts with no bra, sleeveless shirt with teeny shoulder straps, and a tight skirt stretched around a big belly) and attempted to strike up a conversation to pass the time. "It's a little chilly in here, isn't it?" I said. She said with a booming and obviously male voice, "It's the government! The government screws up everything, I'm tellin' ya! The Bible says to give 10% to Ceasar, but they want a whole lot more than 10%!"
JFC! I didn't reply, and waited a few moments to get up, walk away, and look at the myriad of license plates they have hanging on the walls. It was crowded and someone very quickly went over and took the seat.
When my number was called, I went up to the counter. As I was completing my transaction, I heard some man at the end of the counter exclaiming, "Well, you give this stuff to migrants for free!" The (older, female) clerk patiently explained to him in a much softer tone that no, they do not do that -- and at that point, I stopped listening.
It's going to be bad -- very, very bad.
