The shifting vote of Gen-Z

To the Democrats' surprise, Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election was fueled partially by sweeping support from Gen-Z.

Sophie actually raises some really good points.

Very interesting.

The next boomers

Just what we need, a country run by boys who voted for Dump and spent more time playing Fortinte.

by Anonymousreply 3November 10, 2024 10:34 AM

This is all Gen X's fault.

What do you expect when most of Gen Z's fathers are turds like Joe Rogan and Elon Musk?

by Anonymousreply 4December 3, 2024 6:52 AM

Gen-Z is younger, they are supposed to know better because they were brought up in a world with gay rights, gay marriage and a black president. Even if their parents forbid it, they had access to the internet, smart phones and computers at school. Those examples did not exist for Gen X. Not even something like Will & Grace was on TV when Gen-X was in their youth.

R5 wasn't your generation the ones who grew up making AIDS jokes?

by Anonymousreply 6December 3, 2024 7:31 AM

Who is the trumpier generation overall, r5? Gen X by a long shot.

But when boomers die and Hispanics and blacks take over, everything will be amazing and no more MAGA. That will work out as well as all the other stupid predictions on here.

The thing that is being overlooked greatly IMO is what happened on campuses this year. For every action, there is a reaction.

Most of the baby boomers did not support the antiwar Vietnam movement.

Most of these kids - who were deprived of normal high school years - wanted normal college years. What they got were academic higher education institutions - the liberal sacred cow - upholding the rights of an extremely vocal minority to trash campuses and disrupt their education. I kept thinking of the scene from the film within a film in The Exorcist where Chris MacNeil is playing a character who tries to stop kids from taking over a building and says “these people have the right to get an education.” At least in Vietnam many of those kids were fighting against them and their peers being sent to fight, kill and die on the other side of the world. The Palestine protests had no such connection to the real world events that were happening.

Many of the self-appointed faces of the protest movement were the They/Thems which Trumpism mocked. Most of these people here mocked Khymani James. The Khymani Jameses of the world were created and elevated by the kind of obtuse liberalism which tells us that the President should be supported but that his own actions are terrible and need to be protested. Why are people surprised at the counter reaction towards Trumpism?

If they want a life in chains that’s their funeral. Life in a country with now civil rights, no social safety net, and an environment without regulations and zero focus on mitigation of climate change must sound great to them. And if they think housing is out of reach now just wait and see what their stagnant wages and economic calamity will get them in that future. Oh well, the other side are girly soy boy wimps.

When they get kicked off their parents' healthcare these next four years, it's going to whiny and ugly.

I think two things are at play here. A backlash against extreme social engineering. Just let these boys be boys. It’s not toxic masculinity for a straight guy to want to fuck on the first night. But also post Covid social anxiety. The world has changed drastically since 2019. Think about it. Most of these Gen Zers were little kids in the aughts when Trump was beloved by the media and the walking face of American capitalism. It’s almost like inception. It is hard to counter that kind of influence especially as Covid has changed society in not so great ways.

All in all, remember though KH still won the majority of Gen Z, including non white Gen Z males. Trump just made significant almost scary in roads.

Fuck Gen Z.

Fuck Gen Z hard up the ass!

The Gen Z “swing toward the right” is less about an ideological shift, and more about a smaller proportion of younger voters participating in the 2024 versus 2020 general elections. The Biden economy has been lackluster for young people trying to launch their professional lives, with the administration’s support of Netanyahu’s military strategy a contentious issue for many young people. Gen Z has had less exposure to the economic crashes that reliably follow Republican presidential administrations. They’re less experienced and informed.

You end up with a situation where younger GOP supporters were more engaged (and even saw Trump as a “change candidate”), with Harris failing to garner enthusiasm, so there was a larger portion of GOP votes relative to the total young voting population. Younger people can be less strategic about voting for the least worst candidate, even if you don’t love that person. I remember feeling that way during my first presidential election in 2004, when a third-party candidate seemed like the best anti-war option.

Democrats thought Gen Z was all pink haired non-binary social media police who are radically liberal. Such a small population of Gen Z! Those kids are considered losers in school, that’s why they behave that way.

R16, instead, a lot of them ended up being broccoli-headed, 25-year-old virgins who live in their parent's basement and can't drive.

by Anonymousreply 17December 3, 2024 11:04 PM

Yeah what's up with the broccoli hair? Not attractive.

by Anonymousreply 18December 5, 2024 6:09 AM

It wasn't Gen Z as a whole. He appealed to the incel voters like Barron.
