Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)

23 years ago this November the world watched the film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's popular novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (or Harry Potter in the Sorcerer's if you are in the United States) in awe. The film, like the novel, follows a young boy as he discovers he is a wizard and begins his magical education.

Directed by Christopher Columbus

Screenplay by Steve Kloves

Music by John Williams

Starring Daniel Ratcliff, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Tom Felton, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Ian Hart, Robbie Coltrane, John Cleese, Richard Griffiths, Fiona Shaw, Harry Melling, Warwick Davis, John Hurt, Julie Walters, Zoe Wanamaker, David Bradley, Matthew Lewis, Leslie Phillips, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, and RICHARD HARRIS

I always loved the opening scene is Richard Harris and Maggie Smith.

I remember when this came out on VHS. The entire family watched it; some people were even standing.

Better watch it before Trump allows the evangelicals to ban it because it is witchcraft.

My favorite scene is when Harry meets Ron on the train and their friendship starts

It’s the first time you see harry comfortable and truly happy

by Anonymousreply 3November 9, 2024 11:32 PM

In awe? The movie is tedious and forced.

by Anonymousreply 4November 9, 2024 11:32 PM

Richard Harris really was perfect as Dumbledore. Michael Gambon was too blustery.

R4 did you see it in theater's when it came out? It was the talk of the town.

by Anonymousreply 6November 9, 2024 11:36 PM

R5 I agree. He was more like the book.

That's a big leap saying 'the world watched'... I never read any of the books, nor did I watch - in awe or not in awe - any of the movies, and I was part of the world 23 years ago. I can speak for many of my friends and relatives from back then, too.

I just watched the whole series for the first time a few months ago.

by Anonymousreply 9November 9, 2024 11:43 PM

I love these movies. Seen them many times.

I had written off the book as for kids ,but a teacher friend of mine urged me to read the first one and I enjoyed it and was hooked. I was visiting my parent for the holidays when the movie came out and suggested to my younger brother we see the movie. He objected to seeing a 'kid's" movie but he went and to his surprise enjoyed it. That led him to the fandom and he met his wife online while discussing Harry Potter. They have been married over 15 years now.

It is a fun movie to watch around the holidays

R8 sounds tedious...bet you're fun at parties (Jill Stein voter, eh?)

Our school took us to see this one in the cinema when I was in fourth grade, on the last day before Xmas break. I had no idea who Harry Potter was before but I was naturally blown away by the film. I remember we grabbed a bunch of plastic straws at the snack bar on our way out of the cinema and pretended they're magic wands on the bus ride back from the cinema. The fun was quickly over when one my classmates, who drank too much Coke, threw up and stank up the whole vehicle.

Yes, R11. I was in grad school when I was sent a copy of the first book by a friend. Fell in love with the series and saw this film as soon as it was released.

Back when everyone loved Jo. Oh well. I love her still

I haven’t seen all of the movies, but I did read all of the books and enjoyed them.

I did see this movie when it came out in DVD and was amazed at the special effects.

Michael Jackson was desperate to visit the set. He wanted to meet Daniel Radcliffe, who was then 10 or 11 years old, in the worst way. The director Chris Columbus, Radcliffe's parents and JK Rowling refused to allow Jackson to visit the set or meet with Radcliffe anywhere else. Rowling allegedly said to Columbus "you keep that kid fucker away from my Harry!"

I did, actually I took my nephew because my sister didn’t want to see it.

I tried very hard to be very excited, because he was. It was terrible.

by Anonymousreply 18November 10, 2024 5:10 AM

The first two are like medicine.

by Anonymousreply 19November 10, 2024 5:20 AM

I saw it in theaters as a ten year old. I'm one of those millennials who was bombarded by Harry Potter books/movies from ages 8-18.

Strongly agree, r19. The first two are shit. I didn't like Richard Harris as Dumbledore, way too similar to Santa. The third one is the best film of the series, imo. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón.

by Anonymousreply 20November 10, 2024 6:41 AM

I never miss a Daniel Ratcliff movie.

by Anonymousreply 21November 10, 2024 8:44 AM

The movies were way better than the books which just drag on and on.

by Anonymousreply 22November 10, 2024 9:14 AM

I tried to read the first book to my nephew when he was 6 or so. Couldn’t make it past the first page, it was so clumsily written. (Apparently the author improved in later books) When you do a lot of reading aloud to kids, you quickly learn which books are better for that. I was never a big fan of Dr Seuss but his books are brilliant for reading out loud because they have a rhythm. This is different from reading to yourself of course.

Does anyone remember Daniel Ratcliff in David Copperfield (1999)?

by Anonymousreply 24November 10, 2024 9:31 PM

No r24

by Anonymousreply 25November 10, 2024 9:34 PM

Yes r24. He was very good in it

by Anonymousreply 26November 10, 2024 11:02 PM

This is so Pony Adjacent.

by Anonymousreply 28November 10, 2024 11:11 PM

R24 No, but I do remember Daniel RADcliffe in David Copperfield.

by Anonymousreply 29November 10, 2024 11:48 PM

It's just a popular franchise, r27. It's not the same as wanting to fuck a cartoon horse. People are allowed to like things without it being sexual.
