Dems don’t have to change a thing.
As usual, the GOP will overreach with laws about abortion pills, the mass roundup of illegals, ignoring climate change, and huge tax cut for billionaires.
That will lead to a recession just as it has with Reagan, Bush, GWB, and Trump.
Dems will take over Congress in the midterms. Like clockwork

It’s difficult to understand why Democrats won’t let it go. On the one hand, it’s said that the issue only affects an infinitesimally small number of people, but on the other hand, it’s the hill that the whole country must die on, even if it costs Democrats elections. No one is going to die or be irrevocably broken from banning biological men in women’s sports.

Maybe a year ago, I went to lunch with some members of a very conservative women's organization that I was a member of (just resigned); they didn't have any problem with me being a lesbian, but they were disgusted and appalled by the trans stuff. I had to reassure them that not all gay people wholeheartedly supported the Ts or even felt aligned with them. They were OK after that, but they were still giving me the side-eye.
The general public has accepted us gays for the most part, but when it comes to the Ts, all bets are off.

I believe the problem with T and the general voting population has more to do with the attention whores and the social media types. They are more about attention and clicks and would flip their look in a second if it meant even more attention and even more clicks. I doubt Vance would call me a "normal gay" but I know those Bud Light commercials ushered in another Trump Era and we need to understand how to protect trans rights, but not at the expense of the greater whole. I personally have zero problems with trans people but for many, having a trans woman selling an American classic beer, you may as well have a giant cock with a cock ring in the commercial and men fucking each other and saying "Hey cowboy, drink our beer!" As in, we can coexist with these sexual realities as long as its in the shadows, on the fringes, not in the mainstream. Not shoved down peoples' throats. This is what I think most Americans want, not what I personally feel. To tell me personally to fuck off when I am simply observing reality tells me that you are not being rational, but you are in your emotions and you're lashing out. We cannot alienate millions of people in service to the 0.01%. We can keep them under our umbrella but we can't put them above the masses adn give them extra special rights. Such as playing in women's sports. Or acting like "I'm a woman's woman" when they have never had a period, never been date-raped, never gotten pregnant and sought an abortion. And then they want to use women's restrooms with their penises. Women find this really terrifying and we have to be aware of these truths.

For most of Biden's term, Democrats were unified, even after losing the House majority in 2022. The GOP was split into MAGA and non-MAGA factions who couldn't even come together to select a Speaker without chaos. Though they continue to purge moderates from the party and the MAGA wing are emboldened after this election, those divisions haven't gone away. They'll be at each others throats soon enough.
The Democratic Party has to avoid going down that same fractious path as the GOP did. They need a game plan with an emphasis on unity along with developing strategies to be an effective opposition party under a Trump presidency. If that happens, they could gain seats in 2026, assuming conditions for free and fair elections still exist by then.
That said, I still can't believe we will have to go through this shit again and it will be worse than before.

We may also live in an era where we will never again have a two term President, no matter who it is. Especially with the short attention span theater and the 24 hour (or has it now been reduced to 8 hours?) news cycle.
And people are still ticket splitters, but that went on in 2020 as well. States voted for the likes of Susan Collins but voted for Biden.
And there's the disconnect between abortion referendums and minimum wage increases in states like Missouri that also overwhelmingly go for Trump and Josh Hawley, who want to get rid of those things.
There's a lot going on here that can't just be simplistically boiled down to America sucks and we're MAGA now. I know I'll take shit for saying that.

In Canada they call (or called) the Liberal party the "natural governing party" because historically the Liberals formed the national government most of the time. They were the party to beat. They were the natural fit. I'd argue the Conservatives in the UK are the same. In any country where there's a first past the post system, one party is seen as the natural party.
So do you really want to be in a system that just rides the pendulum back and forth or do you want to try to build something where you're the natural governing party?

There's a headline on WaPo today for their podcast: This is bigger than any one mistake Harris made
And it was. First off, I don't think there was any way for Democrats to have won the presidency. A viable enough candidate was running against [bold]Donald Trump[/bold] and lost. There was nothing so problematic about Harris that she shouldn't have been able to defeat Trump if the prevailing climate had allowed it. It didn't. It couldn't, if it allowed him to win. So, yes, this is bigger than any one mistake anybody made.
Mistakes I saw:
Biden decided to run again. He appears too old to do the job.
The party essentially forbade any talk of Biden's suitability for another term.
Biden got out too late to run a process. And to have enough time to begin to heal the hurt feelings that follow a process. Shrewd operators manipulated that anxiety for their own purposes.
The Democrats talk too much about which candidate has the optics and the magic and the identity characteristics to win and not enough about a candidate with something to say that will win.
(Most controversial observation:) Democrats seem to keep expecting voters to come to them, rather than the other way around. Obama was nuts to scold black men in that speech.
The Democrats still haven't figured out a way to defang the Republican definition of liberal. The strength of the trans ad wasn't that it was about trans, it was the closer: Kamala Harris is for they/them. President Trump is for you.
Harris' messaging was sometimes not specific enough. Opportunity economy? That doesn't sound like a thing.
Flowing from that, she was still struggling to effectively answer tough questions toward the end of the campaign.
The Democratic data must have been bad or they made bad decisions about what they knew. The extent to which this election was fuelled by voter anger about inflation was not reflected in the strategies or tactics.

The entire election mess is such a tragedy. If only the Dems could take control of the House. They still haven't finished counting votes; however, it is likely that the Repigs will hold the House.
Can the Dems retake the House in 2026? I'm not so sure. Controlling both houses of Congress, Trump will get everything he wants in the first two years, so it will look like he's getting a lot done. Plus, a lot of Biden's infrastructure bill will start to take hold during Trump's term with many public works projects getting underway or being completed--and Trump will take credit for everything--every bridge repair, new road constructed, new manufacturing plant built, etc. And inflation, which is at just more than two percent right now and as expected will continue to ease in the coming year--and Trump will take credit for that too--and his stupid followers won't know the difference and will believe him.
I hope the Democrats can capture the House in 2026, but it's going to be quite difficult.

There’s groups that don’t vote in the general election either and Trump’s campaign got them to do it. People can’t count on Trump’s voters staying home in 2026.

A lot of how well the GOP will do in 2026 will depend on how well they deliver on campaign promises to the American people, with immigration enforcement and deportations being a big one.

The GOP took the trans issue and used it like a club, And the pictures of Dr Levine and the bad hair bad lipstick chronic luggage thief made really effective ads, And I mean really effective.
I don’t think Harris mentioned trans even once.
She didn't have to, with the Trump campaign running that specific anti-trans ad in the swing states thirty THOUSAND times at the cost of $41 million, so successful was it rated in their preview groups. It had the highest effectiveness rating, so they ran with it (literally) to great benefit to them.
Thank you. It isn't. And no one cited as a reason to vote for Trump in any voting data. Dropping trans rights will gain us nothing.
Unfortunately, some of the early exit data has shown the politically correct social agenda, including trans issues (specifically the sports issue, not general rights) was ranked in the top three of issues with the electorate they cycle. See the Exit Autopsy thread here on DL, there's a link to one set of these data. It mattered; it wasn't the top issue (Immigration and high prices were the top two) but it was up there.
I don't believe anyone is expecting Dems to drop basic Trans rights from their agenda. Equal treatment under the law, rights to employment, housing, schooling, freedom from bullying and discrimination in basic things - all of these will remain part of the platform. Most Americans, I feel, can get on board with the basic precepts/ They are about general fairness and dignity. It's the mandated pronouns, the interfering with sports unions rights to determine fairplay or other more fringe issues that irritate and upset the general public. Not hills to die on, as stated upthread.

Well r95, that's why both parties spent 100s of millions of dollars in advertising. It works, it has an effect on voters. And now there is social media, podcasters, influencers, and the like to add to the mix.
The GOP spewed lies as it always does, but what did the Dems counter with? When the Harris team was confronted by outsiders about the success of the anti-trans ads towards the end of the campaign, and the concerns over them, they were met with shrugs and handwaves. "We've got this, no worries" (per Andrew Yang the other night on CNN and Van Jones as well).

You pro Trans people are so disgusting it makes other people vomit. It doesn't matter it's .000000001% of the population. Trans ideologues have turned it into a very big issue. The cutting off the tits of girls and cutting off the balls of boys. Men playing find willie in girls' locker rooms and people being called bigots if they object. Puberty blockers? Are you kidding? Fortunately for Democrats, they can stop it being as big an issue by compromising a tiny bit. Democrats could easily turn to condemning allowing biological men in women’s sports, and maybe a few other things, and be done with it. There will be people who will howl for a little while, but they will get over it and continue to vote Democratic. The problem is that Democrats refuse to compromise even a micron on any trans issues.

They really don't need to even go that far. They only need to affirm their ongoing support for the basic human rights for Trans people, and affirm support for whatever the governing sporting bodies or sporting unions come up with for their individual sports, in terms of the matter. Novel idea! Back up the experts in the matter at hand, who know their subject areas best.
Different sports will have differing takes on the participation of trans people, and how it affects safety, competition, etc. - in some sports it may not matter much, in others the opposite. There's no way to have a blanket outlook on "all sports".

All the Dems have to do is being on record as voting against any of the heinous legislation the Reps will try to pass. I hope they do not waste their time trying to "work with" the MAGA run party. That works about as well as Charlie Brown trying to kick the football from Lucy. And let's see how the MAGAs like living with higher prices from tariffs, diseases from lack of vaccines, and businesses short-handed from immigrants being booted out en-mass. The Dems just need let the Reps hang themselves with all the rope they've been given.

Just ban bio men no matter whatever medical procedures they have had from women's sports and nobody is allowed any surgery until they have the proper tests and psychological treatment as adults. You need a rethug to tell you a child cannot consent to sex but they can consent to puberty blockers and physical mutilation? Yeah you do so you WANT to make them look good.
It's very very simple but pro trans ideologues have to turn it into a political issue when it is a private personal issue so that it clearly affects enough people to make gays look really bad and rethugs are using it as a cudgel to diminish gay rights. Don't allow trans to do it. These pro trans who want to fast track children to possibly very real catastrophic issues are totally insane. And I've known straight men who do drag, do not want surgery and who admit yeah I'm a man with a fetish. But they do not insist they are literally women. Those people who do insist are severely mentally ill or they are just rigging the system to get ahead when they are just men who are mediocrities. They belong in jail if they are exhibitionists if they insist on getting naked in women's and girls' spaces.
The Dem party has turned elitist and very stupid. It was very hard for me to vote for Harris and it should have been a no brainer. Don't blame the people who voted for Trump. Blame the Dems and the fuckers who had me banned so many times from DL more times than I can count because I was criticizing her. That's Democracy today! Dems have to change a lot. So many of you have turned into Sonny from the View. A totally narrow minded loon.

The main things I noticed on NextDoor which I have set to cover a large swath of neighborhoods is this: Crime—porch pirates, stolen cars, petty theft and homeless drug addicts. It was and still is a major issue for people and they are absolutely fed up. They feel the judges and prosecutors are lax as well. The other is taxes and price gouging.

Crime tracks with the economy because poverty and wealth disparities are the catalysts for crime. As the economy continues to improve, crime will go down, except if such stark disparities continue. The GOP will only make the disparity worse

R122 what about all the tremendously rich celebrities who are going to leave the country because of Trump? I'm not looking forward to the next 4 years. I'm too old at this point to go through another 4 years of his presidency. But is Streisand(as ridiculous as she is I love her) really going to move to England? The woman is 82. Time is not on her side. And she is going to stay away from her fabulous Malibu estate, an estate that she has poured so much love and money into, for a good chunk of the time she has left? I'd like to see that because if she does it would be really dumb. And there seems to be a long list of these people who claim to want to move. And what if Vance wins the next election? Are they all going to be long term expats?

They might be fed up with crime, R121, but voted for a criminal who wanted to avoid jail and provided no concrete policies on how to reduce crime. Plus, Nextdoor was full of the same amount of paranoid crime posts during Donald Trump's first term. Plenty of unrest, mass shootings, violence and riots on the news back then. It makes no sense at all to act as if the country was so safe and secure under Trump. That's a steaming pile of bullshit.
On taxes and price gouging, Kamala actually had a plan to try to keep companies who manipulated prices in check. Trump's only tax policy was cutting them for the richest Americans. But once again, that's apparently what the voters wanted, so let them have it. This will be a learning experience in how to not fuck yourself and your country over by electing unqualified, morally deficient candidates into office and giving his personality cult control of the other branches of government.

No, R120, you got your dumb ass banned because of your continuous attacks on trans people that were straight out of the christo fascist handbook. You continuously and repeatedly voice your opinions and then get pissed when people on here refuse to accept your regurgitated horseshit as scientific fact. And like any misguided/crazed zealot, you keep doing the same shit over and over again and expecting different results, the very definition of crazy.

That was only a part of what I said. I was also harshly critical of Harris. So if both got me banned that just shows me how intolerant people like YOU are. Don't think you are such a tolerant good person. If you were violently objecting to what I was saying it just shows your lack of knowledge about Harris and the Trans situation. It does no credit to you and is nothing to be proud of. You should be deeply ashamed of yourself defending trans ideology today which affects not only boys and girls but gays as well.
You know absolutely nothing which I can say with absolute certainty which is only stressed by you saying 'continuous attacks on trans people that were straight out of the christo fascist handbook. You continuously and repeatedly voice your opinions and then get pissed when people on here refuse to accept your regurgitated horseshit as scientific fact.'
Honestly how can you be so loathsome thinking that it's ok to mutilate children. How can you be so loathsome to think it's ok for men to compete in women's sports and invade women's spaces?
In total just how can you be so loathsome? You lack total self awareness so you couldn't possibly answer that question. ' Straight out of the christo fascist handbook, 'regurgitated horseshit.' You are a joke.
You completely ignored that I said it is fine for adults to transition with proper mental and medical care. That in the past I was a trans supporter but I cannot in any way support the gaslighting that is going on in the trans community today. And in no way can a bio man turn literally into a woman. That is decided at conception and none of us has any control over that. If that were the case I can say inside I feel like a young Dana Andrews so I AM a young Dana Andrews. And if you do think that bio men can become bio women or the opposite you are one crazy pup. Point that definition of crazy back at yourself.
