How many best friends do you have!

You know, the ones you can count on!

3 to 5, depending on how you measure

He died, so none.

Well, gramatically you can only have one best friend.

The most American thread ever. “Everyone is my best friend, even if we just met!”

I have one friend that I would consider my best friend, in that we have known each other for twenty years and have seen each other at our worst. We have both struggled with addiction (although separately; we never drank or used together) and destructive relationships. Interestingly, we can go months and even years without talking, just because our lives have gone in different directions, but we're always there for each other when needed, like when a parent dies.

Other than that, I've had "best friends" at different stages in my life, at different jobs, at different schools, etc. I realize that in all but the rarest cases, friendships are situational. Sure, we might still text or email occasionally (but even that is rare), but we don't share the closeness we once did. A wise person once told me something like, "People come into your life when you need them, but they don't always linger."

Generally, though, I am pretty detached and enjoy spending time by myself.
