The annual bullshit called Veteran’s Day

I will be avoiding the ceremonies where they will inevitably blather on about duty and honor and how fighting to save America is a great honors. UTTER BULL SHIT

Most died for wars to make rich people even richer.

The whole military industrial complex is made to make people even richer.

No one is any more free because we fought in Afghanistan and Iraq for 20 years. The same with Vietnam and Korea.

OP, yea, yea, yea, your rant is all well and good, hope you feel better.

But Veterans Day, on 11/11 at 11am, was special... it was originally Armistice or Remembrance Day. It commemorated the end of World War I and I do wish there was still a moment of silence at that time and bells were still rung (or tolled as Hemmingway wrote).

It was an awful conflagration and the veterans really did need to come together. Men had not suffered in such a manner previously. The war was unique - until 1939. The kind of weapons used, the gassing of the enemy, the bombing of cities from airships, the injuries (that men survived), the maiming of bodies... nothing like it had been experienced. Families did want/need to acknowledge their dead sons, husbands, fathers.

A century+ has passed and we are a much different country and world. We fetishize "Veterans" and all of the ceremony feels forced and perfuntory. But once upon a time, this was meaningful.
