Like so many things, it's a shame of what the Amish have become. Lancaster is a diverse city with restaurants from many nationalities because the Mennonite communities have traditionally welcomed immigrate populations.

The amish population has emerged as a strong voting block in my hometown in rural Ohio as they typically vote down school levies because they don't go to school. Every so often, some story comes out about the incest & sexual abuse in Amish communities, but nothing ever comes of it.

I hate the Amish, too. They are garbage and are notorious animal abusers and puppy millers. Our newspaper carries an insipid and more-or-less illiterate food column called "The Amish Cook", which we dubbed "The Amish Kook", which is like reading an extremely boring letter from an old-time, poorly-educated person. It is chock full of cloying platitudes ("God makes no mistakes!") and often describes butchering "beefs" (she doesn't even refer to the poor creatures as cows) and chickens. Several of her offspring have Muscular Dystrophy, due to inbreeding. Oddly, they are permitted to use Rascal Scooters. Their rules are so absurd and random. They can have a phone but it must be in the barn. They're allowed to use washing machines but they have to be gas-powered (???), they can be driven places by infidels but can't operate cars themselves. And of course, they pollute the air with their fucking coal furnaces. On top of everything else, her recipes are the trashiest: casseroles prepared with Campbell's soups, Pillsbury biscuits, and Cheez Whiz. Cool Whip features prominently in her dessert recipes. Also, she constantly details her everyday hardships and her "dear readers" are tacitly encouraged to send money and gifts and they DO! Ugh. They should all be buggy-whipped and pushed into an old-fashioned grease fire!

I like their quilts, but they are expensive.
