‘We warned you,’ Arab Americans in Michigan tell Kamala Harris
Trump won 42 percent of the vote in Dearborn, home to the country's largest Arab-American community.
Third-party candidate Jill Stein took 18%.
Those votes came at the same time as growing anger over the war in Gaza - and unwavering US support for Israel.

OP, Trump would've still won even without Dearborn (or Michigan), but it should be stating the obvious that any Muslims who voted for him thinking he would *help* the Middle East in any way will soon find themselves severely disappointed. His most steadfast supporter is still Miriam Adelson, who's Jewish and possibly even further to the right than Netanyahu himself. If anything, his election likely means our supply of weaponry to Israel will only increase, not the other way around.

Seriously R5, you REALLY need to let this shit go. "Tel Aviv loves the gays!" is NOT a valid rationale for slaughtering innocent women & children, nor will it ever be. It's also absurd to assume that Al-Jazeera is in any way "publishing lies" solely because of a single Qatari sting operation, and while obviously jailing people for gay sex is appalling, it's not the same as countries that literally STONE gays to death, e.g. Uganda.
Just as a reminder, Al-Jazeera was the ONLY truly reliable source – meaning for AMERICANS – regarding our invasion of Afghanistan & Iraq. While Judy Miller at the NYT was busy giving Scooter Libby handjobs in return for fake news about WMDs, Al-Jazeera was the first to report with actual evidence that this entire thing was a con executed by Bush/Cheney to get their hands on Iraqi oil, and to settle G.W.'s beef with Iraq that his daddy G.H.W. failed to complete – namely executing Saddam.

R24, once more, with feeling: I am in no way defending any sort of anti-gay anything. My point was that Qatar is not truly extreme in that regard, plus it's hypocritical as fuck for anyone as an American to be dissing any other country on these grounds considering the Cheeto we just elected (even if you didn't vote for him). Trump doesn't hate the gays probably only because he has the Cabinettes as well as several of America's only openly gay billionaires on his side (Peter Thiel), but replace "gay couple in Haiti" with "Black couple in Trumplandia" and you're still going to see active suppression of human rights.
Excellent job of, well, burying the lede: this has zilch to do with anything Al-Jazeera, already previously proven to be the MOST reliable reporter of goings-on in the Middle East.

R3 is right -- Adelson gave close to $100,000,000 to Trump's campaigns and first inauguration. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom (who knew it was for sale?) in 2018. This is the moment that spurred Trump to say, "It’s actually much better because everyone gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they're soldiers. They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead. She gets it, and she’s a healthy, beautiful woman, and they’re rated equal."
That such words could come from the President of the United States, the Commander-in-Chief, is stunning in its disgusting vacuity. I still can't imagine what those 42/18% of voters were thinking, but dare I say that it's not exactly in the best interests of the United States.

It’s funny how none of you are able to recognize any group other than “white people” as being heterogenous in any way. There are gay Muslims. Women Muslims, left wing Muslims etc etc. If they deserve “consequences” of how the group voted at large, and that’s amusing, then any consequence you face because of the voting habits of white people (which have been historically worse and more right wing / conservative every single time) are also, by your own rationale, deserved, and whatever negative consequences affect you, even if you voted democrat, or are a woman, younger person etc. should be amusing. Schadenfreude right?
And I know you’re ready to talk about white voters with “they’re conservative, they’re religious, they’re older, they’re red state” etc as a way to avoid any shared culpability but those same differences within groups exist for every single group. This is basically a consequence of the fact that a lot of our older neolib trolls only have white friends, therefore they can recognize variations in white people, but they don’t know any (or many) Muslim people or Latino people or Asian people etc so they’re unable to see those people as anything other than a single group. It’s a personal failure that kinda runs out of explanation after the age of 20 or so after which (especially as a gay person living in a multi ethnic society, you should have a variety of personal acquaintances. But here we are.

What are you talking about r67.
We revel in schadenfreude whenever it strikes - we're equal opportunity when it comes to such things.
As for hypersegmentation of various affiliation groups, we are more than willing to see the huge differences among groups - currently, we're not so thrilled with maga gays and the rainbow coalition which has focused on priorities that don't actually include gay and lesbian people (see recent HRC and GLAAD threads).
Finally, minority and affiliation groups are less prone to hypersegmentation than the larger majority groups, both because the numbers are less meaningful when split AND people tend to view their affiliations through a primary lens. If you ask people who are members of multiple minority groups, they'll always prioritize within. For example, a gay black man - more gay black men view being black over being gay. Obviously, not all, but a significant majority. Same with other groups. Whereas with the "white" majority, the affiliation group is limited to the subset - if you're white, being gay IS the minority affiliation.

Well, according to America’s favorite nappy headed bitch, Joy Reid, and America’s favorite worn out Puerto Rican hag, Sunny Hostin, Kamala ran a flawless campaign. Maybe instead of only being angry with Trump supporters, they should also be angry with the ragheads who were telling everyone to vote against the Democrats. Who also aren’t keen on women’s rights.

Well, they punished themselves. Jill Stein is a complete loser who has no chance of winning anything and Trump is Trump. Let's see how these people feel in 4 years.

Biden tried to placate them during his entire run as best as he could and they didn't give two shits and only whined about how he didn't do enough. The next few years will make them yearn for the Biden administration and make them wonder what they were complaining about. The Democratic Party will shift right the same way it did in the mid 90s after the 1994 takeover and there is nothing they can do about it. It's sad that it came to this but that's the direction of the country.

Word is that Trump wants Israel to do what it needs militarily before the end of his first few months in office (and as much as possible before he even takes office) because he doesn't want the protests on this issue to become a big thing during his administration. Then the goal is to bring Saudi Arabia into the Abraham Accords giving him a huge PR win. I don't know if he will accomplish that given the views of the Saudi people and the fact that he isn't the best at actually making deals despite his claims, but that's the likely plan.
What this means is that all these folks are about to find our very soon what they voted for. Hell unleashed on Gaza, an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, and every other short term goal Israel wants it now has a free pass to do.

Thanks, r188. I have a hard time with acronyms in my old age. I should have Googled, but thought it was too weird, "out there" to get a response.

r199 No. This is why. Whitmer won Dearborn in 2018 with no problems. This incident in the schools was what broke the dam with that community. They don't play about their kids.

This is from a former Muslim fb. He is super smart, curious, loves the West, rich, arrogant, and funny. But once he came back from temple, he’d be angry and bitched about the US and our policies all the while using everything to his advantage. He wants to become a politician and has moved to DC.

So R201, are we to assume you endorse banning books in school libraries, even though some parents may want their children to have access to them? Are we now obligated to mollycoddle bigoted Arab-Americans?

Is that liberal flavored racism now at R104 or just racism? The whole thread is an illustration of the problem. Liberals are patronizing minorites and as soon as they realize people develop a will of their own and some (gasp!) vote differently from what the liberal well-meaning people would want them to, the understanding suddenly ends.
That Arabs in Michigan voted much like the rest of the US could tell you that perhaps Muslims are not so different from other Americans after all, but no. Liberalism has become all about separating and pidgeon-holing the electorate.

Saw on tv a possible middle eastern from Michigan guy who voted for Trump saying something like, "He promised that he'll put an end to the war, but he's known not to keep his promises. I voted for him in the hopes that he'll keep it". What a putz.

You are defending banning gay books...on a gay forum? I think I've seen it all now.

r205 I actually agree with banning the specific books that were in the schools in this situation, and many other schools. They were objectively inappropriate. There is no arguing. Stop giving push back. It's fucking us up. It's losing elections. Fucking STOP it. Let it go. Read the goddamn room. Even many in our own community found these books out of order.
I also knew that if I and many others in the gay community didn't find the books appropriate, this would REALLY fuck up the Dems' Arab and/or Muslim voting bloc. I have NO idea why they would do that. In Dearborn of all places. It was super dumb. At the end of the day, the massive votes lost with this voting bloc were avoidable. The Gaza situation was just the nail in the coffin.

r206 Because people here are trapped in a bubble and refuse to consume other media outside of their own goddamn comfort zones to get a pulse on the sentiments of the demographics they claim to care sooo much about. And then want to get a funky-ass attitude when a member from one of those demographics or someone who was raised around those demographics tries to insert reality into the conversation. ANYWAYS...🙄

"President-elect Donald J. Trump has selected Mike Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas, to be his ambassador to Israel, choosing a loyal ally for a crucial foreign post at a time of crisis in the Middle East. If confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Huckabee, a former pastor who has never served as an overseas diplomat, would play a crucial role in helping Mr. Trump’s quest to fulfill his promise to bring the war in Gaza to a swift close.
Mr. Huckabee has voiced staunch support for Israel as it conducts its war in Gaza, which began after Hamas led an attack on the country on Oct. 7, 2023. In August, he said on social media that Hamas must 'release ALL hostages & unconditionally surrender.'"

So the fuck what r212 ? Ad hominem much?
The relevant question is whether the middle-school books actually are as characterized or not, yes or no.
And if they are, school board Democrats in favor of sticking them in middle schools will have a problem with parent voters.

r217 Thank you! Especially if those parent voters are Muslim parents. This election just showed how much that voting bloc matters to Democrats. Dearborn is part of Wayne County, here. The way they voted coupled with the more Black men that either voted for Trump or stayed home fucked Harris up and lost her the state.
There was more turn out in Wayne County than 2016 when Hillary lost the state. To entertain the thought that the losing the Muslim vote didn't hurt is idiotic and self-defeating clown shit. That book issue is probably one of the dumbest hills to choose to die on right under the trans lunacy.
See our state voting stats and turn out states below. Pay especially close attention to Wayne County.

When the fuck are people going to learn that you rarely to never have the perfect candidate to vote for, it is always a choice of the lesser of two evils.
Not that their vote really mattered in the end but if it had came down to the outcome in Michigan, oh man
Trump is not going to be their friend.

There is an Arab place in my neighborhood that sells kebabs and shawarma. Early this year first they started displaying the Palestinian flag on their window in solidarity. I was fine with that. Then they were putting up Biden poster with an X on his face, and later a Fuck Biden cartoon, and even a From The River To The Sea poster. The last three months they had a Trump 2024 poster. They lost a lot of local business. I wonder what their opinion is going to be with Trump gives Israel the complete backing to do whatever they want in Gaza and the West Bank. The Biden Admin was at least trying to put some reins on what was happening. Trump will be okay if they are completely annihilated.

[quote] [R157] That "I'm speaking!" shit doesn't work on the Arabs, here. Dearborn said, "Ma'am, we are not Mike Pence, and this is not 2020." When she did that, I physically recoiled, because I knew the blow back would be huge. It was a dumb move. And no one in the Democrat party called her out for it. Bet y'all won't do that shit again.
She did exactly what she needed to do. The Arabs made a decision based on something happening on the other side of the world when their concerns should have been closer to home. Harris had 100 days, she did not have time to coddle those morons who couldn't see the issues clearly. Harris did not fail, America failed.

Elon Musk, a close adviser to President-elect Donald J. Trump, met with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations on Monday in New York in a session that two Iranian officials described as a discussion of how to defuse tensions between Iran and the United States.
The Iranians said the meeting between Mr. Musk and Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani lasted more than an hour and was held at a secret location. The Iranians, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss policy publicly, described the meeting as “positive” and “good news.”
