Trump's plan for dismantling the Department of Education

Trump's Agenda47 campaign proposed eliminating the Department of Education -- which, according to the DOE website, "establishes policy for, administers and coordinates most federal assistance to education."

The DOE, established by President Jimmy Carter, provides programs such as Title I funding for low-achieving or high-poverty K-12 schools in need of support, as well as Pell Grants for undergraduate students in high financial need.

Throughout Trump's first presidency, he proposed billions in cuts to the Department of Education's budget.

In a campaign video, Trump said he wants states -- not the federal government -- to have control over schools.

However, he has also outlined plans to further restrict content or classroom discussion in schools based on guidelines that would be executed at the federal level.

Trump's campaign has outlined a plan that features prayer in public schools, an expansion of parental rights in education, patriotism as a centerpiece of education and an emphasis on the "American Way of Life."

He has also called for the dismantling of diversity initiatives in education and federal funding cuts for schools or programs that feature “critical race theory, gender ideology or other inappropriate racial, sexual or political content." Republican-backed legislation across the country has similarly sought to limit these topics, and the efforts have been criticized for being vague and leading to "censorship" in schools and classrooms on topics concerning race, gender and politics.

Similar policies and rhetoric against school content concerning race, gender, sex and more have coincided with the removal of more than 10,000 books from library shelves over the 2023-2024 school year, according to the free-expression advocacy group PEN America.

Trump has also suggested that he would create a new credentialing body to certify teachers "who embrace patriotic values and support the American Way of Life" and reinstate his administration's 1776 Commission to align the teaching of history with the "values" of the founding of the United States -- though Agenda47 does not elaborate further on what such values are or define the criteria for embracing the "American Way of Life."

Trump also backs nationwide universal school choice programs, which allow a student's allotment of public education funds to be transferred to nonpublic schooling options -- including private schools or homeschooling.

This comes as voters in three states -- Nebraska, Kentucky and Colorado -- have rejected efforts to codify or expand this kind of school choice.

Trump's Agenda47 also anticipates an end to teacher tenure laws. These laws are described by the United Federation of Teachers as state laws that prevent a school district from dismissing a tenured teacher without due process. Most states have tenure laws in place; however, at least 10 states have zero or limited tenure laws, according to the National Education Association.

He also said he will adopt a merit pay for teachers. Some studies have shown that merit pay programs improve student outcomes, but critics argue there is not enough evidence and that various factors impact student performance -- including funding and resource inequity.

Trump's agenda for higher education includes creating a new, free university called the "American Academy" and fund it by "taxing, fining and suing" private universities.

More, more, again, again!

“How are you going to keep them down on the farm after they’ve seen gay Paree?”

Keep them naive, hell keep them indoctrinated, and they will be easier to control and fleece.

by Anonymousreply 3November 7, 2024 6:09 PM

Will my student loans go away if there's no Department of Education?

by Anonymousreply 4November 7, 2024 6:30 PM

This will be bad, because in case you don’t know, there is already a massive nationwide teacher shortage. Many are leaving the profession due to admin hell, politics hell, toxic parents hell, overcrowded class size hell, and sociopathic aggressive students hell (with no backup from admin).

by Anonymousreply 5November 7, 2024 6:34 PM

there is barely education happening rn as it is

by Anonymousreply 6November 7, 2024 6:58 PM

You need to learn to pace yourself. This is what it is going to be like for the next 4 or more years. It’s only going to get worse. Losing sucks.

by Anonymousreply 7November 7, 2024 7:21 PM

My jaw fell open when I read some of that stuff. How do you campaign against it? Fuck me.

by Anonymousreply 8November 7, 2024 7:32 PM

Thank god under Trump our local community schools will be so much more patriotic (USA USA USA ) and so much more pure of thought, than West Point or Annapolis is.

And that is no fucking joke.

by Anonymousreply 9November 7, 2024 7:47 PM

OP, he's not going to dismantle the DOE. Or "mass deport" anyone. Or "act like a dictator" on day one. OTOH I know I have as little chance of convincing most of anything of the sort as I'd have convincing Marjorie Taylor Greene that Jewish space lasers are fake, so I won't bother. I would at least suggest attempted a sober-minded analysis of why none of the above are in any way practical, unless you derive masochistic joy from wallowing in Chicken Little-esque SKY IS FALLING!!!! hysteria.

As for the reason, a case in point. To state the blindingly obvious, Texas competes solely with Florida for the title of most odious red state, and unlike Florida, its state legislature has been Repug for 30 years now, as have its governors and senators. It also severely restricts the power of cities to enact their own ordinances: unlike most states, it can unilaterally supersede any local decision it doesn't like via an *agency* ruling. (Meaning it's not even up to a judge, let alone the actual locals in that area.) Further, its equally odious governor, Greg "Wheels" Abbott, is absolutely dead-set on undermining the state's public school system, replacing it with an all-charter one.

Except that hasn't happened, and for the same reason that eliminating the DOE won't happen: urban & suburban Republicans support the idea, but RURAL folks do not – in Texas or elsewhere – because they know full well how terrible schools are in low-income areas. Again, this is the MOST odious state, and has been under unilateral Republican control since the '90s. Further, Abbott and/or his proxies already tried to primary out members of the Texas House & Senate who refused to go along with his plans, and even called multiple special sessions last year to get it passed. None worked.

Point being: this is even less likely to occur in the U.S. House, given that it'll be close to a 50-50 split regardless of which party actually wins it. We still have more House reps from rural areas than not, and their fealty to Trump has never been absolute – particularly in areas like education & healthcare, where "leftist" policies actually work, even when Repugs claim otherwise. They'd also like to privatize Social Security, but that could be the single most suicidal move Trump (or any Republican could make).

But fine, if you want to drive yourself crazy with all the hundreds of hypotheticals Trump could do – never mind that most will not happen in the reality-based world – that's your prerogative, but why the AF do you want to torture yourself to such an extent?

R6, that’s the way they want it.

by Anonymousreply 11November 7, 2024 8:46 PM

R10 = how stupid do you have to be think Trump would try to do the most vile things he promised?

by Anonymousreply 12November 7, 2024 9:24 PM

DOE may go. DOE has been at the top of a lot of the hit lists for ages. I’d say it’s almost certain to go. And quickly, Will anyone care? Outside of the DOE?

Agencies do at times come and go says the HEW.

There is absolutely no doubt that on day one trump will start the ball rolling for mass round up of illegals. He can’t possibly not do this. It should take some time for the field work to begin.

It’s going to be like the first day of rifle deer season in a rural state for the GOP and the inner maga crew. All these years waiting and being hated and hating and being made fun of and charged with crimes and laughed at some more—- now hunting season starts and they have plenty of ammo and no one to stop them,

Fucking A this could get really bad for us deer. Anyone that thinks they will be easy or or gentle or nice has not been paying attention

Losers need to pay price and we will

R10 when Hitler was appointed chancellor, he had the reichstag and the German government.

There is always opposition….until there isn’t.

Good fucking luck with your hopefulness

by Anonymousreply 14November 7, 2024 10:49 PM

And worst of all what if trump does pull off a lot of his promises and America loves it?

What if trump does not fail?

Yes the worst outcome—-success.

by Anonymousreply 15November 7, 2024 10:59 PM

Well, it shouldn’t exist, but I’ll take the check anyway, thanks!

He either intends to stay in office permanently or he doesn't care what anyone thinks because he's served two terms. Re-election is not a concern. You think he gives a damn about the future of the Republican party? Don't make me laugh. A fool and a mad man has been elected and he's gonna do what he's gonna do because "it's where it belongs, with the states."

Future plans include establishing a college fund for young adolescent women.

It will start with the eighth grade. Girls who pass the eligibility requirements will be given jobs they can work part-time after school and on weekends. They will each be assigned to wealthy Republican donors and taught the skill of massage.

Massage is a trade that, if they practice and continue to refine their skills, can be quite useful and profitable in their future endeavors. The more each young woman is willing to participate, the more she will profit.

Many of the Men who have agreed to donate their time and finances to this program, (Republican Men only), are quite excited to be given this wonderful opportunity. They feel it's their way of giving thanks and paying back to the community from which they have profited for so long.

Because of the expected overwhelming popularity, it is being limited to Republican Male Trump voters only. Each applicant must provide a copy of their voting registration, proof they voted for Trump, plus a utility fee of $10,000 dollars that can later be used as a charitable tax donation, (for those few applicants who still pay taxes).

Eligibility requirements for the young women who would like to audition* - (I'm sorry, that should say *apply) - are as follows:

Be between the ages of 13 and 16;

Height and weight proportionate, (excluding breast size);

Parental-signed permission slip (forged is acceptable).

They must also participate in a screening process: They should be dressed in comfortable or tight gym clothes. They will meet with a small panel of VIP Donors. A quick interview process will take place, during which time each panelist, with pencil and paper, will notate a secret number between 1 and 10.

All applicants who receive a rounded score of 8 and higher will automatically be awarded with positions and can start training immediately!

Those receiving scores between 6 and 8 will be placed on a waiting list and called, in order of preference, to fill any slots that might abruptly become available.

They are also welcome to reapply every 6 months. Upon rejection, they will be given a list of instructions to follow as to what they'll need to do to raise their scores, (simple diet and exercise tips, perhaps a surgical enhancement).

All applicants with a score of 6 or below will be rejected and quickly dispatched.

We are proud to announce that President Donald J. Trump, himself, conceived of and created this scholarship program! He is so excited to get it up and running that he has agreed to head the VIP Panel for a limited time, (or, ya know, whenever he wants).

The debut location will be opening soon at a convenient location in Palm Beach, Florida, (formerly known as the Jeffrey Epstein estate).

Republicans have been trying to dismantle the DOE literally since 1980.

Reagan campaigned on it and promised it.

And here we are, nearly 50 years later, with the DOE still standing.

It's not going anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 20November 8, 2024 12:52 AM

Any possible thing that you can think of that's evil, sick, or demented, the republicans will do.

by Anonymousreply 21November 8, 2024 12:53 AM

I don't think R10 (and a lot of other posters here) quite grasp the concept of a dictatorship.

The education responsibility used to be part the Health Education and Welfare department. If the separate department is abolished, there will be functions reassigned to other departments.

It would have been better to have kept Heath and Education together and create a massive Welfare department.

by Anonymousreply 25November 8, 2024 1:45 AM

. As a former teacher, I will say many teachers would be happy if the DOE was abolished. It has done very little to actually improve education. Just a bunch of bureaucrats with bs degrees telling teachers what they’re doing wrong but offering no real help.

by Anonymousreply 26November 8, 2024 1:56 AM

It’s the same thing with people all upset the other day that CDC might be reorganized. CDC has been being reorganized, given new names, had programs added, and programs removed since for ever. That’s just normal business.

People care about CDC. The DOE?

No one here gave a shit about the DOE until we heard trump was going to gut it.

by Anonymousreply 27November 8, 2024 2:23 AM

R26 is my kind of guy!

Poor R20.

I'm sure you also insisted that there is no way that Donald Trump would get re-elected, and Kamala Harris was a sure win.

You are so insanely out of touch, it's comical.

by Anonymousreply 29November 8, 2024 2:46 AM

Rethugs have always hated education because an educated population is harder to fool, not to mention that educated people don't want to work in factories for minimum wage.

This should be no surprise to anyone.

by Anonymousreply 30November 8, 2024 2:59 AM

Education didn't work for Trump so he'll dump it.

by Anonymousreply 31November 8, 2024 3:14 AM

I have to admit that if he is considering anything that forces sanctuary-virtue-signaling states divert their recent use of monies from catering to and funding the huge influx of school-age illegal immigrants and their families to funding public education initiatives for legally entered- and citizen-status public school attendees, if in lieu of cut federal support, that sounds right to me.

Leviticus 19:33-34: "Don’t mistreat any foreigners who live in your land. Instead, treat them as well as you treat citizens and love them as much as you love yourself. Remember, you were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God."

Nobody said it was OK to ignore this and focus on the anti-gay stuff.

by Anonymousreply 33November 8, 2024 3:20 AM

The problem with R10's theory is that Abbott DID primary the rural GOP members who opposed his school choice/voucher program. Most, if not all, lost and have been replaced by more controllable and obedient GOPers. So I expect his program will sail through the legislature during the next session. And it will hurt the rural school districts. But, oh well, that's what those people voted for.

by Anonymousreply 34November 8, 2024 3:42 AM

R32 whining about "illegals" and "sanctuary cities" but ignoring how this will hurt poor rural schools in the areas that vote Republican
