I'm disappointed in my generation, they voted 53% for Rump. But then, I've felt that way since high school (also Class of '87 here). We got hosed by NAFTA, faced ridiculous hiring criteria because the economy was flush with laid-off workers as everything started to leave overseas. The oldest X-ers are now 60. We've had, what, five US economic downturns? 1981–1982, 1990–1991, 2001, 2007–2009, and 2020. The world economy experienced global recessions in 1975, 1982, 1991, and 2009. The US also experienced the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the 1998 Russian financial crisis, and the 1998–1999 Ecuador economic crisis. And every time, employers took care of the boomers, first.
Civics had been removed from school curricula, as had western civ. Very few of us got a classical educatiion. And far too many of my peers thought the dick movie characters in John Hushes' films were the cool ones. I can't even count the number of girls in HS and college I knew who got abortions, their entitled boyfriends weren't about to support some slut's child. And guys thought most girls were sluts. And most of the girls would rather take their chances with the patriarchy than stand on their own. To this day, I'm astonished at how many of them look forward to the weekend to party and "get wasted."
Too many of us went to college and then couldn't find jobs that paid a living wage, much less enough to pay back our debt. I went back to grad school and got an MBA in '08. Worst timing possible, we were well into the slide of the Great Recession. Classmates who became teachers, cops, firemen, or any kind of government employee are starting to retire with great pensions. I've been laid off and restarted my career several times because the companies I worked for either consolidated or merged and laid half the staff off. I'll be working til I'm dead.
And yeah, most of them thought Reagan was a father figure. So what if he said that AIDS was "killing all the right people." So what if he began taxing Social Security, borrowed billions from the SS fund that would never be paid back, and started our addiction to wildly increasing the national debt to pay for tax cuts for the rich?
In my observation, Gen Xers think every complex problem has a simple answer. Yep, 53% of Gen-X are still GOP-voting assholes. The other 47% of us watched Star Trek and thought that's what the future was supposed to look like.

I am Gen X. These people that voted for Trump are classmates, colleagues, and in some unfortunate cases, friends. They are terrified. They are in the sandwich generation. They do not live as well as they were raised, they will never be able to retire, their kids will go to state schools, if at all, and they have to care for aging parents who are living longer and spending most of their own retirement savings. There is no significant intergenerational wealth to inherit. They are desperate and panicked.
It doesn't explain their support for Trump but it might explain why they are unable to make rational decisions.

I don’t feel one bit sorry for them and they deserve what they get now.
But what about their feelings?
Fuck their feelings. They certainly didn’t consider mine when they cast their ballot, putting a felonious rapist in office and endangering the lives of countless people for the sake of a cheaper Big Mac. Why should I consider theirs?
I mean, isn’t that the MAGA way? Everyone for themselves.
Compassion and empathy were on the ballot this week and America said “Fuck you.”
It works both ways.
Meanwhile, the typically more compassionate blue state folks will see their stock investments thrive while the broke-ass, ignorant MAGATS stay broke and continue to blame everyone else for their white trash woes.

R41, I understand your rage. However, this is all about class, the end of the American dream, and the delusion of trickle down economics. An apartheid-era South African neurodivergent is the richest man on the planet, and has more wealth than any one person should ever have. All he wants is to end DEI and send people to Mars. It is not simply about broke "white trash," although they have played their part successfully, it is about distraction and obsfucation -- they are being told migrants and minorities are making them poor as they are being pick-pocketed by the rich.
I will be in a drunken stupor until next summer. I can make better sense of it then.

Gen X really is a sandwich generation. We're totally outnumbered by boomers and millennials. They didn't pay attention to us at all as a cultural force till we came of age..(grunge/hiphop, say) So it was a trip to watch a more complicated media environment generate endless writing about the needs wants and desires of Millennials. I enjoyed the recent wave of Gen Zers making fun of your Harry Potter fandom and side parts on TikTok.

Maybe there were some older X-ers involved but for the most part it was Boomers. Gen Z is more like their X parents (much less idealistic, much more blase) but time will tell if anything like the Mils vs Boomer wars of 10 years ago will happen between us and Z-ers. I've been riding the Baby Boomers' coat tails for decades.

I worship the Baby Boomers.

r126 I know right? OP is nothing but a Millennial/Gen Z obsessive-compulsive.

I'm how this election ended up shaking out generationally.
Millennials >>> Boomers >>>> Gen Z >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gen X

“ Yet people like you do not include Obama (1961) or Harris (1964) as Xers. ”
Because ALL charts consider 1961 as boomers and a lot of them consider people born in 1964 as boomers as well.

R131, that misses the point that all of these polls that say how Trumpy Gen X is define Gen X as 45 to 64 (1960 to 1979). You literally ignored my ALL of my first sentence.

Gen X starts at 1965 and ends at 1980
by Anonymous | reply 133 | November 20, 2024 4:09 PM |
Nope hon R132 there are more people who were born from 1965 through 1979, than people born in the 1960 - 1964 period.
So the fact remains that the generation who supported Trump the most was generation X.

R134, please link to a poll that shows the voting breakdown for Gen X as you define it. Thanks, hon.

People get more conservative as they get older. We saw it with the Boomers in the 80s with Reagan and now we're seeing it with Gen X and Trump. Eventually we'll see it with Millennials and Gen Z. It's just the cycle of life.

Google.com is a wonderful tool R135

Google doesn’t find things you pulled out of your ass, r137. All the polls I have seen show stats for voters 45 to 64.
I’ll let this go, but the point is that voters born in 1960 to 1964 had many advantages and experiences that 1965 to 1980 did not. That cohort would have seen their first three elections go strongly for Republicans, and also would have been spared graduating into a recession. These people are the most conservative Xers.

1960-64 are Boomers.

“All the polls I have seen show stats for voters 45 to 64.”
Are you slow or do you just like to contradict yourself???
There’s a greater number of boomers who are 65 - 78 than the ones who are 60 - 64
There’s also a much greater number of people who are now 45 - 59 ( GENERATION X ) than people who are 60 - 64.
Therefore the point remains Generation X is largely responsible for Trump being elected once again. Yes, younger boomers vote like Generation X, that was already a trend on the previous presidential election when people born between 1961 through 1975 were reported as the largest supporters of Dump, now it has worsened with people born in the late 1970s also supporting Trump.

R136 Nearly half of Gen Z is either conservative or Trumpian and that’s scary.
