What are the odds of a military coup in the next 4 years?

We've crossed the Rubicon now, so why not toss this on the table. At what point do we feel the Joint Chiefs of Staff look at The Orange Afterbirth and Jaydine ordering them to do blatantly illegal things and just decide rule by the military is better than this? I would say 40% as of right now.

And don't MARY me with "it can't happen here", bitches. Look around, IT IS happening here....

by Anonymousreply 28November 6, 2024 11:29 PM

What coup, the military is mostly conservative, OP. They chafed under Biden and cringed when he started renaming military bases.

This is the hard truth some refuse to accept.

by Anonymousreply 1November 6, 2024 4:41 PM

Maybe after Trump gets his way and has Mike Miley executed.

by Anonymousreply 2November 6, 2024 4:42 PM

Agree r1. I know this is antidotal, but all, the military people in my hometown are all fucking trump republicans. All of them.

Rump will have no problem getting the military to go against Americans. For the few that disagree, they’ll be thrown in jail.

by Anonymousreply 3November 6, 2024 4:45 PM

Lovely thought-won’t happen. It’s over for all sexual minorities-Our 9/11

by Anonymousreply 4November 6, 2024 4:45 PM

I wonder if some fed up lefty will just grab his AR-15 and solve the problem? I do think we need to be ready for anything.

At least we can all use the word "retard" again!

by Anonymousreply 5November 6, 2024 4:47 PM

These four years were like the Weimar Republic, and now the real fun can start!

by Anonymousreply 6November 6, 2024 4:47 PM

The indoctrination in the military toward the GOP is really strong.

by Anonymousreply 7November 6, 2024 4:49 PM

R1 R3 - Over the last 25 years I have worked with countless military brass- any number of admirals and one, two, and three- star generals. And one or two Navy Secretary's thrown in for good measure.

I have become social friends with any number of them. Sure they are conservative, but almost exclusively Eisenhower conservative. Whack jobs and crooks do not make the cut with them.

Any idea that the higher echelon are fans of Trump is a complete fantasy. The low level nobody slugs that people here on DL are likely to know love Trump, but they don't have any power. Your neighbor, Lt. Donklekonker, is not making any executive decisions anytime soon.

by Anonymousreply 8November 6, 2024 4:52 PM

Thanks r8, that’s good to know.

And yes, the military people I know are all lower class

by Anonymousreply 9November 6, 2024 5:26 PM

You have to remember that even the top military brass are trained to obey orders. Those who refuse to obey Trump will retire/resign (hoping they'll still get their pensions!), and that will be the end of that.

Who knows what will happen next, but it sure as fuck won't be a military coup.

by Anonymousreply 10November 6, 2024 5:32 PM

[QUOTE]antidotal

Oy vey!

by Anonymousreply 11November 6, 2024 5:40 PM

R8 Trump and his cadre of supervillains will find a way to get rid of them. Any of the top brass not loyal to Trump will be driven out in the next few years.

The Project 25 group wants total control.

by Anonymousreply 12November 6, 2024 5:41 PM

I'm more worried about the police. They are WAY indoctrinated toward MAGA and the far-right in my area, more than the local military. They may view this election as a mandate to really get aggressive, as if they aren't enough already.

My local force has been fighting the implementation of body cameras, I bet they now get their way and do away with them.

by Anonymousreply 13November 6, 2024 5:42 PM

R10- This is R8. You are correct, a coup has zero chance.

'trained to obey orders'. Um, guys at that level give orders, they don't take them. I mean, they do a really good job of pretending to take them, but don't get confused by that.

And some bag-of-shit civilian is not going to be giving them illegal orders that they will obey.

I would like to remind you that in military college all of them watched the films of the generals being executed after the Nuremburg trials.

by Anonymousreply 14November 6, 2024 5:43 PM

1. OP, you have no basis for your odds.

2. The chance of a military with leadership that WILL carry out such orders as domestic attacks is higher, I suspect. The Fiend will order it sooner or later.

by Anonymousreply 15November 6, 2024 5:45 PM

R15- Well, your suspicions are wrong.

by Anonymousreply 16November 6, 2024 6:01 PM

Most of them would mow down those blue-haired Gaza protesters with a smile on their faces, would be my guess.

by Anonymousreply 17November 6, 2024 6:14 PM

You mean, before or after Trump hands the rest of our national secrets to Putin, Xi, or Bibi?

by Anonymousreply 18November 6, 2024 6:18 PM

You know I was in the Army, R14 -- don't you?

[quote]guys at that level give orders, they don't take them

How the hell do you think they got to be "guys at that level"? Were they born with their rank? No, they start out as butterbars (that would translate to the rank of "2nd Lt.," for all you civilians) just like every other officer and they have to work their way up in the ranks over time. Sometimes a long time. Why do you think the "guys at that level" are so old?

You can argue that they won't take orders from Trump, but go back and read what I wrote at R10.

You know the old saying: "You, too, can be replaced."

by Anonymousreply 19November 6, 2024 6:24 PM

Trump’s verbal distain of military personnel is one of his standard tropes. It’s possible he’s justifying his draft dodging (i.e., he’s too “smart” to serve in the military), and/or he’s withholding approval of them until they do his bidding and get “redemption” by proving their “loyalty” to him. I think both possibilities would be consistent with his experiences dealing with his father and grandfather.

My question is whether or how Trump’s treatment of military personnel would enter into their willingness to perform acts that might be illegal. Or have they been trained that the Supreme Court has ruled that a President can order illegal activities as an “Official Act?”

by Anonymousreply 20November 6, 2024 6:54 PM

Trump has always wanted to be Putin-Kim-Orban On and On. To think a dictator started from a realtor/TV game show host-only in America but only the end of a free America.

by Anonymousreply 21November 6, 2024 6:55 PM

I too know and have known a lot of brass and mid-level officers.

They all said (in 2016) their oath is to the Constitution, not the President and CinC.

We’ll see.

by Anonymousreply 22November 6, 2024 6:58 PM

Yes, military rule is the only way now to save democracy in America

It smells like hope

by Anonymousreply 23November 6, 2024 7:04 PM

Expect a lab created COVID like new AIDS to be created and spread around the gay community. Well, bars are pretty much done, but it may its way to health clinics, etc. It will be an excuse to round up gays and put them in camps.

by Anonymousreply 24November 6, 2024 7:12 PM

The 3 main things our military officers are taught right from the start

Respect the constitution and take your orders from the civilian leadership x3

And please give me one example of what you see as a likely order that might be an illegal order? One that is slightly remotely almost plasuable.

by Anonymousreply 25November 6, 2024 7:18 PM

R25 Who are examples of civilian leadership? Do you mean, for example, the Secretary of Defense as opposed to a Military General?

by Anonymousreply 26November 6, 2024 10:45 PM

Lolz

by Anonymousreply 27November 6, 2024 10:58 PM

R26 the POTUS and the civilians who carry out the admins operations. So yes SecDef is civilian leadership. The Commandant is not.
