People mailed in their ballots in 2020 because it was easy. They didn't bother voting this time around because a lot of that mail-in voting was restricted. This isn't rocket science.

I personally know at least 50 people that either voted third party or stayed home. No one in my circle wanted to cast a vote of approval for a genocide facilitator, and the Kamala camp offered them absolutely nothing to make up for that.

People turned out in 2020 to defeat Trump. And then nothing got better in the last four years. So they stayed home this time. It's not rocket science.

Voting in 2020 was practically frictionless. You didn't have to leave your house. In a lot of places you didn't even have to request a ballot. Fill it out and drop it in the mailbox. Done. That fact, combined with everything else happening in 2020, really juiced the numbers. This time, despite the rhetoric, a lot of people just weren't as interested. Add in some ennui over the past four years and more hoops to jump through to vote in 2024, and you get this result. But keep in mind that while ~16M (currently) fewer voters is a lot of people, it's only around a 10% reduction from 2020, and will ultimately be less than a 10% reduction once all votes are counted.
