It is Joe Biden’s fault.
“As shocking and depressing as Trump’s victory is, it is less surprising when one considers the incumbent president. Joe Biden: A wildly unpopular figure who many see as doddering and fundamentally incapable of doing the job of the presidency. Long before Biden’s disastrous performance in his late-June debate with Trump, it was obvious that most voters had concluded that his presidency was a failure. Biden’s successes—his legislative accomplishments, his management of inflation and the post-pandemic recovery, and his role in expanding NATO—didn’t register with voters, either because they were things most people don’t care about or because Biden’s increasing inability to effectively communicate hindered his ability to sell his ideas. What is clear, however, is that he was blamed for things he had little control over: rising prices, global conflict, continued political dysfunction. Voters had little faith in his ability to manage the economy (where he actually did a good job) and foreign affairs (where he markedly did not)….
“… Harris obviously deserves blame here, but it’s Biden who deserves the greater share. It was clear two years ago that voters had concluded that he was too old to serve a second term, but he stubbornly clung on. By the time he stepped aside—by most accounts thanks to the considerable effort of Democratic powerbrokers—it was too late. Harris was the only conceivable Democratic nominee. Given only 100 days to run a presidential campaign, she was dealt an extraordinarily bad hand. We will never know what would have happened if she had broken more strongly with Biden, but her status as his vice president made doing so extraordinarily difficult. By the time she became her party’s nominee, it was too late. The race’s stakes were fixed long ago: This was a referendum on a presidency that most voters rejected more than a year ago.”

The stuff Biden gets blamed for but wasn’t his fault probably wasn’t insurmountable. His debate performance was the deal breaker. And put Harris in a tough spot.

Trump got swept away by Covid and Biden by the inflation that followed. Both had very little manoeuvring space to deal with those issues.

It's the GOP's fault, FULL STOP. Don't let them slither away from the blame. (I've already seen a thread blaming Latinos and several posts blaming women. Stop.)
They nominated an INSURRECTIONIST for President.

r3 It's the majority of America that just elected Trump, not the GOP.

You're missing my point, r4, but thanks for playing.

Biden broke his promise not to run for a second term, denying us a Democratic primary, resulting in Trump returning to power. That will be his legacy. Nothing else he has done in his long career will be remembered, and for that he has only himself (and his advisors) to blame.

The Democrats only chance of winning, in retrospect, was to pick a nominee who could credibly run as a complete outsider untainted by either the 2020 primary left-a-thon or the Biden administration’s record on inflation and immigration.
Why is it important to understand all this? Because their defeat is fundamentally rooted in concrete events and decisions, many of which lay in their control. There is no mystical bond between the public and Trump they cannot sever. The Democrats allowed themselves to be prodded, and sometimes bullied, into either fooling themselves about the true nature of public opinion, or fooling themselves into thinking public opinion didn’t matter.

r5 Not point missed, sweetheart. The majority wants Trump, end of story.

R3 and the people such as Latinos and women voted for him and his sycophants. They should have known better.
John Biden’s lowered student loans payments through the SAVE program. Now, they will know what is having to pay the full amount monthly. Biden did many good things for Americans but no amount of good work is enough when you are dealing with ungrateful people and that is what Americans are, ungrateful people who will soon get more than they bargained for. People who do not appreciate the good that democrats have done to help them in their miserable lives.

r9 You needed only to look at DL to see how unpopular those loan forgiveness programs were (I'm with Biden on this, personally). If even this liberal place has such an issue with that, I can only imagine how unpopular it is in genpop. Well, now people can look forward to paying their loans until the day they die. And of course university education will be discouraged, because the intelligentsia is always the first to go under a fascist regime.
