*OFFICIAL ELECTION THREAD 2024 (PART 3)*—Terminator 2024: The Morning After
No decision tonight, folks, and I’m drunkety drunk. Maybe tomorrow we will learn that Kamala had it all along. Hope someone keeps the faith through the night and posts any new threads. Time for bed. Please fill up part 2 before posting here.

Hate to burst everyone's bubble but it's going to be blue wall or nothing. Women voting for abortion right are also voting for Trump. Students coming out in massive number do not mean they are for Harris, the "bro" vote is going to cancel out the normal progressive vote. Nevada and Arizona are going to be for Trump, full of retired Boomers and non-college educated whites. That's my prediction. Got to hold the blue wall.

That's a good 5 points behind Biden's 2020 performance and looks a lot more like 2016. Another underperformance for Harris in Pennsylvania, a state she almost certainly needs to win.

If a state is declared one way or the other early (counted in the official vote, say Vermont for example) and then all of the votes are counted, can the official declaration be reversed or once declared its a done deal?

[quote] In Pennsylvania, the exurbs are looking Trumpy. In Lackawanna County (Scranton), Harris is underperforming Biden by a couple of thousand votes, though she’s ahead of Trump right now. Our newsroom colleague Nate Cohn has this to say: “It’s still very early in Pennsylvania, but in the first few counties where voting is complete, along with hundreds of completed precincts across the state, Trump is running ever so slightly better than he needs to win.”

Newsweek article that explains a lot about why her votes are down with Black voters, especially men.
“ And then there's Harris' record as a prosecutor. That's a deal-breaker for Quin, an ex-convict: "I don't trust corrupt prosecutors or prosecutors with hidden records."
Harris' prosecutorial record has been a source of contention for many in the Black community, who believe she contributed to mass incarceration during her stint as California's attorney general and in prior positions. Her perceived role in imposing policies that disproportionately affected Black Americans has created a deep distrust among many Black men.”

This country has shown its ugly cards.
I am making peace with this now and will just stop watching the news..
The effects of this dictatorship will probably not show in any form for me personally until my 2026/2027 taxes. Social security will be gone..
I am never, ever, ever trusting another soul ever. I will try to be as kind as I can and fight for good wherever i can.
In my mind, this is over. I will not be checking anything tomorrow- In a few weeks I am sure I will have to face it, but I will avoid all articles and any videos, ect-
I never expected this from our country- After all this man did? He desecrated our capitol. I just can never look at anything the same way again.

If Kamala loses, it's not because of Kamala. It's because Americans care more about their own paychecks (which itself makes no sense, since Trump wants to enact crazy tariffs, but I guess vibes matter more) than they do about human rights/democracy. We fully deserve what comes our way if he wins. It is blowing my mind that Trump actually GAINED ground with Puerto Ricans in Florida.

[quote]I know its early, but what were the factors here? I still think Harris will eke out a victory, btw. Is it bigotry and misogyny? Inflation and prices of basic goods? Immigration? The analysis will be lengthy and complex.
There is a bit of a Bradley effect, but not about race, about sex. I think ultimately what this and Hillary's loss shows us is the immense problem of "anointing" a woman. I think many areas of the "coalition" are simply too conservative to accept a woman in the Presidency and they will defect over that. Working class culture is misogynistic.
Trump appealed to the tribalism of values. If you were a working class Hispanic voter, you have more in common with your white peers than you do with middle class independents and Democrats in the suburbs.

The people who hate Kamala Harris for being a woman also hate her for being a Democrat. It is not some simple formula of inserting a white male in there and everything becomes hunky-dory. What the people who are insisting on a white male candidate are really insisting on is a racist, misogynist asshole who will basically be a carbon copy of the Republican douchebro candidate that will inevitably win the Republican nomination.

There's a steady drumbeat of "Democrats bad - never vote for a Dem" on Fox and Newsmax, and they are the default station in so many public places. It's all they hear, it's part of the news. Dems won't be able to convert people who have been indoctrinated with "never vote for a Dem" so thoroughly and for so long.

R231, it's largely because we now live in an era in which almost every Senate race votes the same way the state votes for President. Brown is a very strong Senator (as is Jon Tester in Montana) but the problem is that this was a Presidential year with Trump on the ballot. Biden’s refusal to drop out create an immense amount of distrust in the Party. People began to consider Trump even if they disliked him. Biden’s subsequent actions in July post-debate were unconscionable from a Democrat. The amount of corruption within the Biden administration was despicable. He proved himself to be just as senile as Trump. Who was running the country?
Biden created the border crisis, Biden’s stimulus helped create inflation. He did not have justice go after Trump because he wanted him as an opponent. Biden created the stage for a Trump revival.
Even when he stepped down, I was of the opinion that nothing could be done to win the election because Biden had caused so much damage to faith in the Party. I said that we would certainly lose and that the best we could hope for was to keep the downballot races from going off a cliff.
That Harris turned out to be a very good candidate was a SURPRISE. I was the poster who said, Is anyone else surprised by how good she is on the stump and had a poll, and the majority of respondents indicated they were surprised. But that means her brand was not strong to begin with.
If she wins tonight, it will be because of the immense organizing strength in the party, not because of her. I like her, but it is an immense risk to try to market someone like her to the rest of the country. She is a Democrat from San Francisco. She has little achievement in Congress or the Vice Presidency. Most people did not know too much about her after three years.
I think it was a warning sign how well Nikki Haley was doing in hypotheticals against Biden - she was fourteen points ahead in Wisconsin. That points to a change election. Trump’s myriad problems are the reason he was even with Harris, but people were already saying they were not happy with the state of the country and his administration. And Harris comes from his administration.

I work remotely for a non-profit that deals with gun violence, so I don't have to deal with Trumpster colleagues. I no longer talk to Trumpster relatives or Trumpsters I knew from a past job, high school, college etc, As long as I have close friends and relatives who voted for Harris I'll be ok because I know we all did what we could to defeat the fucker. Back in 2016, I had lost a job prior to the election and dealt with other bad shit in my life. I was devastated on election night. . A few days after the election, a friend called and asked if I could house and pet sit for her parents until the New Year. Her parents went to another state to take care of her grandmother who was dying of cancer. I was spending some nights at their house and then some nights at my house while going on job interviews and applying to jobs online or dropping off and sending applications. The only times I got together with people were for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Luckily, in early December I got a job offer for a remote job which stared in January. Looking back I was sort of glad that back then I was able to be in a situation in which I wasn't around too many people gloating over Trump's win.

I sure hope the Liberals in Canada are taking fucking notes. Stop with the pandering to every special interest group or you will be voted into oblivion. Take the party back to the slightly left of centre, stop calling everything racist, Islamophobic, and transphobic.
Do something about the brewing sectarian violence between Hindus and Sikhs, and do it NOW. They are brawling in the streets of Canadian cities over religious wars rooted in fucking INDIA and they need to be condemned - loudly. Trudeau needs to tell them to leave their fucking religious wars at home, and if they can't do that, then they need to fuck off back to India.
Do something about the increasing antisemitism, instead of calling criticism of nutcase imams and out of control protests Islamophobic. Here's a clue - the extremist Muslims HATE you just as much as fundie Christians do because you support gay rights. Stop pandering to them, for the love of God, stop pandering to them.
Focus on the economy and the cost of living. Get your fucking asses together already or else we could be facing a possible Trump presidency WITH a Conservative government of our own. That would be a fucking disaster for us.
Get back to the fucking centre before it's too late. You can be a centrist party and still hold some progressive values, it's not impossible. Either way, now's the fucking time to act.

Well, being hopeful for a couple of months felt nice, I don't regret that one bit. But if, despite all that fundraising and that huge canvassing effort, the majority still wants the country to go through a fascist phase, then there's just not much to say about that other than hope the country is still recognisable four years from now.
But yeah, I can't believe this motherfucker will open the Olympic Games.

I grew up in a Latino community in New Mexico and when I realized I was a lesbian as a teenager, one of the hardest things I had to deal with was the homophobia. I was raised Catholic, but my parents weren't homophobic and were pro-choice. When I came out it was not an issue. But, I have known gay and lesbian Latinos who had a hard time because they either had very conservative Catholic parents or very conservative Evangelical Protestant parents and some ended up estranged from their parents.

[Quote] IMO, a lot of racist people showing up at the polls.
No, most Americans aren’t the racists you’re accusing them of being.
The Republicans figured out decades ago how to get poor whites and middle class flyover whites to vote for them. Set up a “news” network that’s really a propaganda outlet. It would create a spectrum of “culture wars” issues to get middle Americans to the polls, not necessarily to vote for republicans, but to vote against the vilified liberals who are out to destroy America.
It worked. As long as we don’t have an answer to it, we will keep losing over and over again.

I want to point out the flaws in the magical thinking a lot of you have
A lot of people are voting for Trump because they have contempt for America because they believe it is failing. And it is.
Part of the reason it is failing is because Democrats naively try to insist that if you elect them, they will get things done. It never happens because the REPUBLIC is a failed experiment. It does not work. Other countries realized this and created parliaments. By holding up our august experiment as worthy of the deepest respect, Democrats turn a blind eye to the anger and cynicism many have for it. People do not like being told to disbelieve their own eyes. When Democrats whip that Orwell phrase out, it is to mock Republicans. But we are guilty of it. Biden showed everyone the emperor had no clothes. He was just as corrupt as Bush in my opinion. And Biden’s weakness is the fact that he did not and will not use his new executive power to stop Trump’s return to office if elected. If we are being told that this man is the antichrist but we are still going to let him assume the presidency, then we are just as guilty of being the sheep we accuse the Republicans of being.

A tie throws the election into the House of Representatives where each state gets one vote for President, even if the Democrats retake the house more state delegation's are likely to have a majority of Republicans than Democrats since states like California and New York have so many Democrats and that would still be a Trump victory. Unfortunately.

The biggest mind fuck here is that the people who will be least impacted are the people who voted for Harris! They are educated, they are mid-high income earners, they live near services, they live near good schools, they live in secular areas.
The people who voted for him will suffer terribly if he can enact even 10% of his plan. With the Senate he can put loons in his Cabinet so he can likely enact 50% of his plan. Latino men with a trade certificate a couple of babies will be impacted way more than a Philly accountant. An Arab in Michigan who has parents who are not citizens and family in the Middle East is going to suffer immensely. How much resistance will come now? Will white women march for reproductive rights in red states now? I don’t think so.

Tlaib's relationships with other high profile Dems in Michigan have probably soured. Back in June, I saw pictures on Facebook from an event a Michigan Democratic club event. Attendees were photographed with Tlaib and other Dem congresspeople Haley Stevens, Debbie Dingell, and Shri Thanedar. In the pictures it was painfully obvious that Stevens, Dingell, and Thanedar were trying to keep their distance from Tlaib.

But the country will be run by technofascists such as Thiel, Musk, JD Vance, etc, with some useful idiots (RFK Jr) who'll be abetting them. And these people are not statesmen or even politicians. They are adherents of bizzarre ideologies who live in far right online echo chambers. And things are moving in the direction of South/Latin American authoritarian places like Bolsonaro's Brazil, Argentina, or El Salvador. The real damage will be that they will do serious damage to the educational and judicial systems, as well as the mainstream media, by stacking them with loyalists. Watch crypto being pushed as a legitimate currency and all scams that result from it. There will be a big redistribution of wealth but not in the way Trump voters are imagining.

I also want to point out something
The outrage over getting offended when a member of the coalition is targeted
We are learning what our allies really are. Latinos, black men. They do not identify with a party that has come to symbolize educated and relatively affluent people. We tell everyone how awful it is when Trump insults and mocks them. They don’t care about that stuff. We treat them with kid gloves out of liberal guilt, but the truth is that we have not provided the kind of response they want to see to the problems they have. Black Lives Matter increased brazen theft which caused even more difficulty for black neighborhoods. The border crisis - which was created because we had to be “humane” - increased distress in Hispanic communities. The things we are doing for our “allies” are making things worse.
Most of these people are fundamentally decent people who want to live in safe communities and don’t need to feel “seen” and validated at all times. The obsession with outrage over Trump’s racism has made no headway with them because they at some level do not fundamentally respect what is being done. They don’t like that we get outraged. They don’t like us. They don’t like the bourgeoisie.
If you want then to respect you, you need to turn iff the loud voices in the Democratic Party who have elevated themselves within the party by using racial grievances.

Yeah, they "feel" it. But they're 100% wrong. I'm not American, and over here we all know your economy is #1 in the world by every measure except the deficit, and that middle of the road economists from all other developed countries think the Trump policies will destroy it.
It's not the economy that is making people feel wretched, it's the way the US does capitalism, and that's going to get way worse under Trump (or rather, Musk and Thiel). But if people really wanted that addressed they'd have voted for Sanders. What they want is retribution, because they ARE voting about how they "feel", and that's what Trump offers.

The fact that Harris made it such a close race was a sign of her strength. This was an uphill battle because people do not like that state of the nation and they do not like the Biden administration.
This is Biden, Biden, Biden. We told everyone for months he was not a good president. We were told to shut up. I probably opened 10 accounts on here because i kept getting FF’d for saying Biden needed to step down.
Biden behaves like Trump. Harris was anointed not because she was the best candidate to replace Biden but because Biden owed his own rise to the Presidency to the transactional nature of his deal making with the Congressional Black Caucus. That’s a kleptocracy if I ever heard one.
We are dealing with the inevitable ending of Biden’s cynical, disgraceful presidency. The Republicans would gave been less likely to choose Trump if they saw the Democrats choosing a new candidate. Biden DEPRIVED Democrats of the ability to choose their candidate. How did we think we were going to overcome that handicap?

The Democratic Party did about as well as it could have under the crazy circumstances. A president running for re-election turned out to be just too damn old and it showed. So they swapped in his vice president, who ran about as well as she could have in every way.
The truth is, the great and good American people have apparently (still not clearly, cause these things just have to be dragged out these days) but apparently decided to vote crazy, for the guy the who tried to steal the last election. We are in late stage capitalism. You must understand that you can not run a positivist campaign when it will only get worse. We are becoming the society depicted in Blade Runner. Things will get worse and worse and the country will just oscillate between two poles because that’s all it can do.

So to everybody calling them trash and rejecting them, where are we gonna get the votes?

Kamala didn’t do a great job at all, actually. And should have never been the candidate.

Once again, the pollsters were way off the mark. The polls showed a close race, but Harris was usually ahead in the blue wall states, even if it was by a small margin. Nobody was predicting a clean sweep of the swing states by Trump. And Ann Selzer, the queen of polling who supposedly can do no wrong, predicted Harris would win Iowa by 3 points, but Trump is actually winning Iowa by 14 points. Selzer was only off by 17 points. Pollsters totally underestimated Trump's strength. I've usually been a defender of polls, but they seem to have been meaningless this time around.

R576, Trump isn’t going to serve a full term. They’ll be introducing President Vance within 4 months.

I'm wondering how burdened Kamala is by what has been.

Trump is on the way to speak to his supporters now.

r595 STOP with that fucking bullshit. My god, I had to listen to "Trump won't serve one full year" back in 2016 as well, and then each successive year after that. Just fucking stop.

Trump is heading over from Mar-a-lago. We all know what he’s about to say.

If there had been an open convention she NEVER would have been the nominee.

And who was your fantasy candidate r592? Anybody at all, or some magical, not gonna ever, ever say, but I bet that secret, double-plus good candidate would be president right now!

Yes, well, R581, now they can just die on the street in choke holds, George Floyd-style. That should work well for them.

The last 4 years have been terrible for many? Excuse me? The gas station by my house is offering 85K for a manager position - only requirement is a GED. My state has 3% unemployment. The MAGA flags were out in upper middle class areas with RVs and boats outside. Nobody had a terrible time because of Biden or the government.

Oh well, that’s the thing, R603 - the “economy” is now going to improve 100% overnight with the Trump win.
It’s not about the economy, people. It’s about racism and misogyny. The White Nationlists won.

This election was about inflation, just as 2020 was about Covid. Everything else is just noise.
