[bold] Judges deny requests to block DOJ from monitoring polls [/bold]
Both Missouri and Texas asked federal courts to keep DOJ lawyers away from their polls. Missouri’s attorney general and secretary of state said any monitoring would “displace state election authorities,” and Texas’s attorney general contended that “Texas law alone determines who can monitor voting in Texas.”
[…]
U.S. District Judge Sarah Pitlyk found that Missouri did not reach its burden of showing that the state would face irreparable harm if the Justice Department’s monitors watched over the city’s polls.

One of my wishes if Harris/Walz wins is the DNC starts to give some focus to lesser known Dems in Congress and the Senate. I'm tired of smug Dems like AOC and Gavin Newsom getting constant national media attention. It has irked me for years that a very intelligent, but down to earth Dem like Elissa Slotkin is mostly ignored in the media while smug dumb fucks like AOC and Newsom are all over the media.

AOC has been indispensable to the Democrats this election. She has worked her ass off to get progressives to vote for Harris. Her outreach to the Puerto Rican community has also been incredible. She was at a Puerto Rican bakery in PA with Harris last night. Whatever the *it* quality is - AOC has it in spades and she can WORK.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | November 5, 2024 7:26 PM |
R50, to me, that was indicative of the biggest mistake of the Dem campaign - ignoring men. They could have easily and effectively played on the bond between men and their daughters, wives, and mothers. Showing a man and his daughter and asking," Men, what would you do to protect her?" Or, they said they had a problem with the black male vote. Well, what gets black men more riled up than anything? Threatening their mothers or grandmothers. Play on that. By gearing the entire campaign around women, when they could have also appealed to men was a missed opportunity. Hopefully, it isn't the reason for the loss. It's a pretty good example of sexism at work.
Well, what gets black men more riled up than anything? Threatening their mothers or grandmothers.
I'm going to get blowback here, with this, but this isn't correct. You know what gets black men riled up more than anything? 'Uppity' educated black women who are more successful than them (not ALL black men, but a large number). This is the primary reason IMO for the small defection of black males over to Trump this cycle. It isn't about foreign policy or tariffs - they certainly voted for white male Joe Biden in large numbers last time.
Of course, in fairness, many stupid white men are also riled up by educated women, black or white. This is how Hilary lost in 2016.

R58 I would drill down further. They quite like the idea of Donald Trump because they are the type of man who would live exactly like him if they inherited 400 million!! gaudy houses, gold toilets, cheat on the wives, pay for sex with porn stars, cheat on taxes, cheat workers, hire their unqualified kids, sell junk. They ignore his racism because they believe that maaaybe some day their side hustle will take off and they can live like him.
The woman who went to law school and spent 40 years working her way up is somewhat intimidating and not relatable. They want a million dollars yesterday, not $70,000 next year and $100,000 in 2028 etc eventually retiring with a million. I also stress this is a small number and most are young, working class and uneducated. At a certain point you have to let them go and learn the hard way and win votes elsewhere - which she has done.

BTW, R58 and R60, you really should have qualified your statement and not just said "Black Men." I am still amazed how we are all Kamala voters, yet how removed a lot of white men on DL are from having any real relationships, friendships, even acquaintances with black men. Being a black male myself, and the black men I know have NEVER had a problem with an educated black woman, ever. Ever. Ever. And I think you will find out that that whole narrative about black men defecting to Trump was manufactured.
The obstacles I have run into being black and educated come from both sides of the spectrum. First the rednecks and racists who don't want you there in the first place and call you uppity. And second, the liberal left who are quietly shocked when you prove yourself to be smarter, more adept at handling yourself in certain situations than them. They are the ones who pat themselves on the back, thinking they had a hand in getting you where you are. But get a better grade, better reviews and an overall better response professionally than them, and you get the "uppity" behind your back.
Anyway enough said. I just found what especially R60 had to say very offensive. But this is a night of coming together and not infighting.

There are four states in the Union that use Commonwealth as part of their formal name—derived from their colonial predecessors. Under the U.S. Constitution, the only legal term applicable is “State.” The End.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | November 5, 2024 11:25 PM |
Actually just read up on it. There is no real difference between a commonwealth and state. Pennsylvania calls itself a commonwealth AND a state.
The term "commonwealth" may have been adopted by these states to emphasize that their governments were based on the common good and the sovereignty of the people. For example, Virginia adopted the term in 1776 to emphasize that its new government was based on the common good. Pennsylvania's first state constitution in 1776 referred to the state as both a commonwealth and a state, and this usage continued in subsequent constitutions.

I think Biden did better last election also because it was the year of establishment disgust with the establishment in light of the relatively recent George Floyd incident, the way many felt that Trump and his Covid Team were fucking up with the pandemic’s response efforts, etc.
PS: Please get this annoying exit-poll fat fuck off CNN. He mentions no context to these so-called opinions. Eg, people disappointed with US Democracy might be that way because of feeling that the woke Progressives are mandating how everybody should think and act, etc.
Also outside of academia and elite coastal big cities, lots of everyday Americans in the real world don’t like that Harris drilling on women’s rights to abortion hasn’t ever seemed to be promoted through a lens that could include mindfulness of a need to support also options for women such as adoption or personal-accountability parenthood planning (aside of course from situations such as rape or threat to the mother’s health/life, and so on). Those Middle America voters alternately think: “Oh, she’s just pushing for an express-lane approach so any woman who doesn’t want their baby can just end up being able to get rid of it and not worry about it being unable to defend its own life…”
Just making the point that there are more voters out there than left Media discuss—and those voters will be voting Red, because the Dems never get it when it has to do with their prioritizing messages or messaging.

Everyone, from the looks of things so far this is very underwhelming-- VA is particularly alarming... Biden did much better (so far) in 2020--- There will be no blowout. This is going to be close as fuck. I am ashamed of this country and truly pray we win this. This is some scary shit.
GA is looking bad too... I give up already. But I felt this way in 2020. But she is NOT doing remotely as well as Biden did.
To put things in perspective, in 2020, women outvoted men by 4%. Now they’re up by 10%.

Years ago, when I lived in Michigan I couldn't stand how people in Detroit celebrated The Russian Five. The Russian Five were five hockey players that Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Illitch got to play on the Red Wings back in late 80s/early 90s. He used shady practices with the help of people in Russia to get the Russian Five to defect to the US. One guy with help of a doctor faked cancer and another claimed that he was disabled due to an accident. I can't recall all of the things they did, but none of it was good.
The Red Wings won the Stanley cup in '97 and '98 and for many years after Red Wings fans basically ass lick the Russian Five. Some years back, a sports journalist Keith Gave wrote a book about the Russian Five and a documentary was made about it Again people in Detroit were all over the book and documentary and basically acting the Russian Five were heroes. During the time, I live in Michigan I knew a Chinese American woman whose parents immigrated from China in the late 70s. Both were research scientists. She grew up one of the Detroit suburbs in Oakland County. I can't remember which town it was. It drove her nuts how when she was a pre-teen and teenager in the late 90s, she and her family had to deal with racial slurs from neighbors and others. But, yet those same people were fans of the Russian Five. She said it pissed her off that people could celebrate pro hockey players who used shady as fuck methods to get into the US with help from the Ilitch family, but people like her parents who came to the US with advanced degrees and valuable job skills were treated like garbage because they were Asian and the hockey players were white.
Behold this sentence.

These posters on every thread, glooming and dooming about this or that state—are they the same upstanding comrades who called in the bomb threats to DeKalb County, or do the troll farms divvy up the labor?

R142, they are like a fucking hydra. Block one and another pops up but they all have the same voice.

Yeah the thread was really enjoyable earlier in the day but now it’s full of trolls, hysterics and missing posts from the (3) account I’ve blocked in the last few months. Checking out for a few hours.

I'm sixty years old and admit I just haven't the stomach for this after 2016.
I'm doing what I did in 2020, not looking at any coverage (I just peeked now) and going to bed. I'm saddened that Sherrod Brown was defeated and that louse Ted Cruz was re-elected. What a world. Florida, you suck too.

Anyone thought about what Kamala may do next? I assume Doug will go back to his law firm.
What about Pete? He was a shoo-in for a cabinet pick. Any seat he may have his eyes on in 2026.

She is cold. Dem candidates usually fade but like Hillary she may be in a future Dem Cabinet if we have any more elections.

American women re-elect degraded rapist!
Next time one screams about "bleeding out in the parking lot", remember to tell her, "That's Democracy, hon!"
Women once more abandon a first-rate female candidate to support an actual rapist.
Well done, bitches. Well done.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | November 6, 2024 4:23 PM |
Agreed, OP.
Those white women who voted for this need to suffer the consequences for it. Or their daughters and granddaughters do. It's the only way for them to wake the fuck up
I say this as a white woman. I'm so fucking disgusted, I can't even come up with the words to relay the depths of my disgust and revulsion for these dumb cunts

I live in New Mexico and a part of me hates that New Mexico is now seen as haven for abortion care. Yet, many of the women from Texas who have come into New Mexico have never given a fucking "thank you" to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for everything she has done to keep abortion access in New Mexico. Also, some of the reproductive freedom advocates like that annoying Olivia Juliana have never acknowledged Grisham either. It pisses me off that a Hispanic woman like Grisham is constantly cast off to the side.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | November 6, 2024 6:30 PM |
These white women who continue to vote GQP won't get it (regarding abortion rights) until they or their daughters die in a parking lot from being prevented from getting care.
Same with gay marriage/rights, these people don't get it until their kid comes out as gay or trans. People generally don't have empathy towards others until it personally affects them. It makes me weep for humanity.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | November 6, 2024 7:00 PM |
Yes, r162, but at least there will be fewer stupid cunts!
I weep for MYSELF.

My very first comment posted in July was that running Kamala would result in a Dukakis-level blowout.
Then she ran an absolutely stellar campaign, imo.
Then my first guess turned out to be right. What a shithole country this is.
