U.S. Presidential Election Participation & Your Success Rate

How many U.S. presidential elections have you voted in and how often did you pick winning candidate in previous elections through 2020? (excluding the pending 2024 result)

by Anonymousreply 62November 6, 2024 7:08 AM

I'll start. I've voted in six presidential elections - 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 & 2024. Three out of five times, I've voted for the candidate that won.

by Anonymousreply 1November 4, 2024 6:50 PM

8 times in 2024

by Anonymousreply 2November 4, 2024 6:53 PM

Every election since 1980 so this will be number 12 for me.

by Anonymousreply 3November 4, 2024 6:58 PM

I've voted for the Democrat in every Presidential election since Michael Dukakis.

by Anonymousreply 4November 4, 2024 7:00 PM

I reached 18 in 2008 and have voted ever since. The only candidate I voted for that didn’t win was Hillary and technically she won the popular vote.

by Anonymousreply 5November 4, 2024 7:01 PM

I’ve been right only five times since 1980: Bill twice, Obama twice, Biden once.

by Anonymousreply 6November 4, 2024 7:02 PM

R3 here- sorry, I left out my success rate.

Not so great

Won- Clinton, Obama, Biden

Lost- Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, Kerry, Clinton

by Anonymousreply 7November 4, 2024 7:03 PM

Does the question mean, "How often did the candidate you voted for win?", [bold]or[/bold] "Whatever way you voted, did whom you picked as being the probable winner beforehand win?" Those are two different questions.

by Anonymousreply 8November 4, 2024 7:04 PM

R4 I beat that: all the way back to Carter.

My parents voted for every single Democrat from Harry Truman to Obama!

by Anonymousreply 9November 4, 2024 7:04 PM

R8 is your context that badly informed?

by Anonymousreply 10November 4, 2024 7:05 PM

13 times including this year. First 1972. (I turned 18 in 1970 but wasn't 21 until 1973, so without the 26th amendment, I couldn't have voted in 1972.)

by Anonymousreply 11November 4, 2024 7:06 PM

6 wins: 1976, 1992, 1996, 2008, 2012, 2020

Losses: 1972, 1980, 1984, 1988, 2000, 2004, 2016

Now that I sat down and wrote them out, not as bad as I thought.

by Anonymousreply 12November 4, 2024 7:07 PM

This is my 6th. I’m 3/5. I was crushed when Kerry lost in 04.

by Anonymousreply 13November 4, 2024 7:07 PM

R3 bullshit….no way you’ve voted for the winner in every one of those elections. Unless you are Sybil.

by Anonymousreply 14November 4, 2024 7:07 PM

Won-Clinton (2x), Obama (2x), Biden

Lost-Gore, Kerry, Clinton

by Anonymousreply 15November 4, 2024 7:08 PM

R3. I see your correction now. TY

by Anonymousreply 16November 4, 2024 7:08 PM

I've voted 12 times and I pray to God that #13 will prove lucky. Wins, starting in 1976: Carter, Clinton, Clinton, Obama, Obama, Biden. Losses: Reagan, Reagan, Bush I, Bush II, Bush II, Trump. 6-6, 50%, evenly split, whatever.

R14, it looks like R3 is answering the one question about how many times he has voted. The poll does not reflect the question.

by Anonymousreply 17November 4, 2024 7:09 PM

Win: 76, 92, 96, 08, 12, 20.

Lost: 72, 80, 84, 88, 00, 04, 16.

by Anonymousreply 18November 4, 2024 7:12 PM

Voted Dem since I was 20 in 1988. So four losses and five victories thru 2020. And I’ve obsessed about the polls since 2000.

Clinton losing to Trump 2016 was my only absolute shock, like it was for so many of us. Most of them it seemed obvious to me on Election Day who’d win: 1988, 1992, 1996, 2008, 2016*(wrong!) and 2020. Plus both of Reagan’s victories.

The four unknowns for me (based on polling) have been 2000, 2004, 2012 and now today. May tomorrow night be 2012 redux!!

by Anonymousreply 19November 4, 2024 7:21 PM

9 Times

First Election I could vote in was 92 - I voted for Clinton

96 - Clinton

2000 - Gore

2004 - Kerry

2008 - Obama

2012 - Obama

2016 - Clinton

2020 - Biden

2024 - Harris

by Anonymousreply 20November 4, 2024 7:23 PM

I wasn’t trying to “pick the winner.”

by Anonymousreply 21November 4, 2024 7:25 PM

I'm elder/senior.

As a kid - followed but too young vote - Kennedy (60), Goldwater (64), Humphrey (68) or was it Wallace?; don't recall; wasn't Nixon. Favored Eugene McCarthy in primaries.

McGovern - 72 Carter - 76 Carter -80 Mondale - 84 Dukakis - 88 Clinton - 92 Clinton - 96 Gore - 2000 Kerry - 2004 McCain - 2008 Obama - 2012 H. Clinton - 2016 Biden - 2020

5 of 13

by Anonymousreply 22November 4, 2024 7:32 PM

Wins: B. Clinton, Obama, Biden

Losses: Mondale, Dukakis, Gore ("loss"), Kerry, H. Clinton

That's not counting the couple of 3rd-party candidates I voted for (my state was sure to go blue) who then pissed me off next time around. Only D for me now!

by Anonymousreply 23November 4, 2024 7:35 PM

Humphrey (68) or was it Wallace?; don't recall; wasn't Nixon. Favored Eugene McCarthy in primaries.

x🤷🏻‍♂️^ Wallace?! Nutz

by Anonymousreply 24November 4, 2024 7:42 PM

Have been voting since the 1980 election. Have always voted Democratic.

by Anonymousreply 25November 4, 2024 7:44 PM

Clinton/Gore 1992 was my first presidential election of voting age. Been voting ever since, just try and stop me!

by Anonymousreply 26November 4, 2024 7:48 PM

I’ve voted 12 times for president. I voted for the winner in all but two elections. The first time that I voted for a losing candidate really stung and it was a new sensation for me. I’ve managed to temper my feelings after that and try to be more que sera sera.

by Anonymousreply 27November 4, 2024 7:51 PM

I always vote for the Democrat: 6 wins starting with Jimmy Carter in 1976; 6 losses.

by Anonymousreply 28November 4, 2024 7:52 PM

Not counting this year, I've voted13 times and six of those won.

by Anonymousreply 29November 4, 2024 8:03 PM

1980 was the only election (from '72 onward) in which I did not vote for the Democratic nominee. I voted for John Anderson instead. (I was in a reliably red state so my vote didn't make an difference.)

by Anonymousreply 30November 4, 2024 8:19 PM

I've voted in 14 presidential elections and if the Democrat won then I picked the winner. Jimmy Carter will die hating you R30.

by Anonymousreply 31November 4, 2024 8:28 PM

Gore 2000

Kerry 2004

Obama 2008

Obama 2008

Clinton 2016

Biden 2020

Batting .500 so far.

by Anonymousreply 32November 4, 2024 8:39 PM

r31 Why? He wasn't gonna win Virginia anyway.

by Anonymousreply 33November 4, 2024 9:04 PM

This will be the eleventh POTUS election.

by Anonymousreply 34November 4, 2024 9:04 PM

I turned 18 a few weeks after the Dukakis election but haven’t missed one since.

by Anonymousreply 35November 4, 2024 9:13 PM

Sorry, 4 losses and 6 wins so far.

by Anonymousreply 36November 4, 2024 10:11 PM

7 times...turned 18 in 1999:

2000 - Gore 2004 - Kerry 2008 - Obama 2012 - Obama 2016 - Clinton 2020 - Biden 2024 - Harris

50% win rate...tomorrow may make it 56%

by Anonymousreply 37November 4, 2024 10:16 PM

6 times

2 losses for candidates who I voted for Kerry in 2004 and Clinton in 2016

by Anonymousreply 38November 4, 2024 11:08 PM

This is 9th time . I’ve voted for the winner 4 of 8 times. Never voted GOP. Even when I was a kid, I wanted Dukakis. Bummed when he lost.

by Anonymousreply 39November 4, 2024 11:16 PM

If Hillary had won in 2016, we’d possibly be in a great era, 20 years of a Democrat in office!

by Anonymousreply 40November 4, 2024 11:20 PM

It’s over …he will get AZ. She will get the Blue Wall plus 3 out of 4 among NV, NC, GA and IA.

by Anonymousreply 41November 4, 2024 11:31 PM

R30 thirty wet lashes for your Anderson vote! 😵‍💫

by Anonymousreply 42November 4, 2024 11:33 PM
If Hillary had won in 2016, we’d possibly be in a great era, 20 years of a Democrat in office!

If somehow she had won, she would have been turned out in 2020, like George H.W. Bush. The country can barely tolerate having the same party in power for two terms, and certainly not for four.

by Anonymousreply 43November 4, 2024 11:38 PM

You're not going to find ANYONE who voted for Bush Jr., Trump, Obama and Biden.

Sometimes your candidate doesn't win. There hasn't been a good Republican candidate for President for several decades - including Reagan.

by Anonymousreply 44November 4, 2024 11:38 PM
Jimmy Carter will die hating you [R30].

A nod to ol' Jimmy Carter for reaching his100th birthday, voting early for Kamala Harris and (hopefully) seeing her win this.

After Rosalynn passed, people didn't expect him to hang in there this long.

by Anonymousreply 45November 4, 2024 11:42 PM
You're not going to find ANYONE who voted for Bush Jr., Trump, Obama and Biden.

That’s not true. Independents go back and forth. There were certainly people who switched from Obama to Trump and then back to Biden.

by Anonymousreply 46November 4, 2024 11:49 PM

R46 - but Independents are flakes and narcissists who aren't likely to be believed.

I said what I said and stand by it.

by Anonymousreply 47November 4, 2024 11:56 PM

Voted 12 times (not counting this one), the first time in 1976. I too voted for Anderson, whenever that was. Currently, I'm 6/6.

Hoping to make it 7/6 tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 48November 4, 2024 11:59 PM

R44 ty Captain Obvious—we never thought of such a thing until you arrived.

by Anonymousreply 49November 5, 2024 12:03 AM

Magic 8 ball: he will get AZ. She will get the Blue Wall plus 2 out of 4 among NV, NC, GA and IA.

by Anonymousreply 50November 5, 2024 1:05 AM

Turned 18 in 2000, missed the Primary that year but voted in the general. Mixed bag for this middle-aged bag.

General: Nader (I KNOW!), Kerry, Obama x2, Rodham Clinton, Biden, Harris in the morning

Primary: Kerry, Obama x2, Sanders, Biden, Biden/Harris

by Anonymousreply 51November 5, 2024 1:15 AM

You vote dim.

by Anonymousreply 52November 5, 2024 1:57 AM

R52. And you vote FAT!

by Anonymousreply 53November 5, 2024 1:59 AM

Girls, girls, you're all fat!

by Anonymousreply 54November 5, 2024 2:09 AM

15 times, 1968 on.

Success rate = Carter '76, Clinton '92, Clinton, '96, Obama '08, Obama '12, Biden '20. With hope, Harris '24.

by Anonymousreply 55November 5, 2024 2:10 AM

If you only ever vote one party, you're not going to have a high success rate for picking the winner.

by Anonymousreply 56November 5, 2024 2:12 AM

R56, But I have a clear conscience, idiot.

by Anonymousreply 57November 5, 2024 2:14 AM

My "success rate" is based on voting for the best person each time.

It is not MY failure if others are elected. OP, you're a piece of bad work here.

by Anonymousreply 58November 5, 2024 2:20 AM

OP here, R58. If you don't like the way I asked the question, fine. I don't create that many threads and meant this one to be harmless fun. Have a nice evening.

by Anonymousreply 59November 5, 2024 3:35 AM

My thirteenth. My first was 1976 (Jimmy Carter).

by Anonymousreply 60November 5, 2024 3:53 AM

I’m now at 6 wins 7 losses.

Fuck it all.

by Anonymousreply 61November 6, 2024 7:05 AM
I’m now at 6 wins 7 losses.

Isn't that only as good as picking by chance?
