His owner, the handsome and hunky Mark Longo, who became a social media sensation with Peanut, is sharing his story of what happened this weekend.
He is cute - the squirrel is adorable. When will this ass-backwards hat fad die - it makes one look like a doofus no matter how good looking they are.
Too bad about the squirrel - I live in a rural area and the squirrels are prolific so, when driving, I do my best to avoid them. After all, they have a purpose too.

They won't. The law prohibits domestication of squirrels, and does not recognize individual ownership of animals that are not domestic pets or livestock. The squirrel was property of the state.

So he had that squirrel for years, why now? Did he piss off one of his fans? The report says the squirrel bit someone, but the person he bit was one of the animal control people AFTER they took him away. So no proof of that. Then they had to destroy the squirrel to see if it had rabies. So do they euthanize people to determine this as well?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 3, 2024 9:54 PM |

Regardless of how trashy this guy is, odd that they spent so much resources going after an illegal animal who is being taken care of. Their answer was to kill it because it's not fair to the animal?
This is almost as stupid when they arrested Micheal Jackson. They sent over 100 cops to his home to make sure he didn't make any trouble. Um? Were they expecting some military combat?

Something similar happened to a hometown friend of mine on social media.
She found three newly born baby squirrels that had been abandoned at the base of a tree near her house and tried to save them. She reached out to vets and a local âsquirrel expert lady,â who gave her advice. One ended up dying. She really took it to heart. Buying all kinds of supplemental food and heat lamps. I think itâs what a lot of people would do.
Then she put her saga online, Facebook and also Twitter (before it was X). I would look every day to see how the squirrels were doing. One day the whole thing had been taken down. She confessed later that by putting it online âall the nuts came out.â She said she got calls on her phone from crazy animal rights nuts and âQ-Anonâ types. People were sending her crazy threatening DMs saying theyâd have her arrested for cruelty to animals (huh?) She said it was anll insane and she found the whole experience bitterly disillusioning.
She wasnât able to save the other two squirrels.

Rabies is 100% fatal and infects the brain. The standard protocol is to test the biting animal unless thereâs proof theyâve been vaccinated. Test requires euthanasia and decapitation since they need brain tissue to test. The problem is that the squirrel was housed by a recently wild raccoon which are high risk for rabies. In any case, the guy did not have a permit to keep either animals.

by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 4, 2024 8:05 AM |
R76, no vet is going to vaccinate a squirrrel or raccoon and risk losing their license over it. They must test for rabies after a bite because the series of shots required over a span of several weeks is extremely painful, expensive, and require the sheriff take time off.
Treatment for people bitten by animals with rabies If you've been bitten by an animal that is known to have rabies, you'll receive a series of shots to prevent the rabies virus from infecting you. If the animal that bit you can't be found, it may be safest to assume that the animal has rabies. But this will depend on several factors, such as the type of animal and the situation in which the bite occurred.
Rabies shots include: A fast-acting shot (rabies immune globulin) to prevent the virus from infecting you. This is given if you haven't had the rabies vaccine. This injection is given near the area where the animal bit you if possible, as soon as possible after the bite. A series of rabies vaccinations to help your body learn to identify and fight the rabies virus. Rabies vaccinations are given as injections in your arm. If you haven't previously had the rabies vaccines, you'll receive four injections over 14 days. If you have had the rabies vaccine, you'll have two injections over the first three days.

We had a pet raccoon when I was little. My father found it hurt by the side of the road.
My mom canât believe she allowed this when she had three young kids, but my dad grew up on a farm and loved all animals.
After she grew to adulthood the raccoon moved into a tree outside the kitchen window. As theyâre nocturnal animals, she would visit my father after dark if he was up, and play with him a bit. Then sheâd head off for her night.

That said, last weekend I came across a large raccoon wandering around on a downtown sidewalk in the middle of the day. It appeared to be lethargic and confused, definitely something wrong with it. A woman was observing it and on the phone with animal control so I hope it got some help.
