R7- I pray that this is true but I am also horrified what we have become as a country. For me it keeps coming back to how close this is, and should not be- the fact that this criminal and sociopath could even run, and now we have women having "back alley voting" -like abortions back in the day. Having to whisper their votes like some 3rd class citizen to keep their likely racist, homophobic, MAGA husband happy. We are disgusting creatures. If this guy fucking wins, I cannot fathom where this country will be in 2 years. This is the first time I think where I can see that nothing is what it seems, and what appears to be a high stakes election, really is signifying some truly alarming aspects of the state of humanity itself, much less politics. There are just TOO MANY people with minds from 1880.

I've seen enough.
This is over. She's stayed steady but he's imploding, as are the people around them. From Trump in the last week we've seen island of floating garbage, blowing the microphone, rumblings about social security and medicare diminution, whether they like it or not, nine guns in her face and RFK Jr. fixing American health care. For me it's as much the visible chaotic collapse of the Trump campaign as the rise of the Harris campaign.
It's over. She's on the glide path, it's just a question of how the thing lands. I can't see a crash. His behaviour is so bad it now has to turn people away, not toward.

I'm guessing these are the Evangelical Christian females who are in "traditional marriages" where they must do what their domineering husbands or fathers tell them to do. Obey their orders like a hostage. Wouldn't that be an awful way to live? There's a lot more of these people than we may realize. The Kamala campaign made an ad about this with Julia Roberts doing the voice over. Here it is at the link:
Totally agree with everything you've said R10! These are crazy times we live in.

I thought similarly (though cautiously) in 2016, but then Trump won by a hair. What gives me somewhat more confidence this year is the hard numbers from early voting, majorities of women voters, along with the continuing pressure of Dobbs. And no equivalent to the 11th-hour Comey letterāif anything, Trump's MSG rally and subsequent statements are his own Comey letter.

I agree with R24 mostly. If anything happens, it will be isolated. I can't see another Jan 6. The MAGAs are tired and the Republicans in hiding will move swiftly to try to stamp out Trumpism. They will understand if there's a path back to the White House, Trumpism isn't it.

R7 R8 Although it's mentioned, I think the underappreciated narrative of this election is subjugation of women vs. their independent agency. Of course is post-Roe, but it's more than that. The MAGA cultural hegemony really is establishing the Republic of Gilead. R59 I am coming around to this thinking too.
I had been thinking that given Trump and his follower's shameless disregard for the constitution and our norms that if he won it might be the end of the Republic. The Supreme Court's baffling rightwing activism contributed to my concerns. The international authoritarian techbro submission to autocracy also problematic.
But I've seen Harris rise to the occasion, and I've seen so very many Americans respond to the challenge (polls showing Harris voters are "more enthusiastic" to vote than MAGA voters.) I think Harris will win. But if she doesn't I think America and Americans can fight against authoritarians. If Trump wins on Tuesday, the next chapter in the struggle for liberty will continue.
When we fight, we win.

Look I agree we have a lot of stupid nasty venal unprincipled illogical voters in this country. But, having said that, we cannot ignore the role the mainstream media has played in normalizing him, sanitizing him, and covering up his lies. There used to be a time when the media would challenge a candidate in real time. And the ads would be called out for their misleading dishonest content. But now it's a fucking free for all, and the GOP has weaponized all the low information voters. You tell me what kind of a political party depends on lies and misleading voters, and in 2021 and right now plots and schemes to literally ignore and overthrow the will of the voters to install a convicted felon, an adjudicated rapist, and the man who conspires with our foreign adversaries, and instigated an insurrection? A political party that depends on election deniers and manipulation, intimidation, and bribery to enlist the involvement of members of Congress and other government officials who totally ignore their oath? It sickens me.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | November 4, 2024 1:24 AM |
Itās really entirely the mediaās fault by a long shot. Every prominent Republican was repulsed by Trump, and most were on the record in their opposition towards him during the 2016 primary. Itās genuinely scandalous that the ones who have remained steadfast in those beliefs about his unfitness and immorality number only in the dozens. What Trump has laid bare is the fact that politicians truly stand for nothing but personal power, wealth, and being the center of attention. The Republican Party today stands for nearly nothing of what it stood for a decade ago. āConservativeā is just a euphemism now ā theyāre for more government, less freedom, and an unbridled surveillance state.
I donāt doubt that democratic politicians are also craven and blindly ambitious, that they would follow the party line if bucking it meant being ostracized or voted out of office. Thankfully I canāt think of a charismatic figure waiting in the wings to bring that to bear on the D side. Hopefully I donāt live long enough to see a trump-like freak come along and enthrall / corrupt the Democratic Party. Because what has happened to the republicans is pitiable; each of them individually is an embarrassment and will go to their graves knowing as much.

If Harris carries North Carolina and Georgia she can afford to lose Michigan. She will need Arizona and Nevada, but I think she will have those. The reason Michigan worries me is because the Arab population, the largest in the United States outside the Middle East, is not in favor of Trump just because of the Palestine question alone. There is also a cultural bias against voting for a woman for President. And unfortunately a lot of Black and Latino men share that bias. The fact is the " Puerto Rico is an island of garbage," was a huge gift. It has given a big boost to Harris support among Latinos.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | November 4, 2024 3:26 AM |
I think Trumpās reliance on getting the votes of those who donāt tend to vote (non-college educated males) will fail just like it did in 2020.
Males tend to be the least likely to actually vote while women tend to be the most likely. So much depends on whether white women, who always vote the GOP by a majority, vote for Kamala
by Anonymous | reply 98 | November 4, 2024 4:03 AM |
R98, I was looking for a graph that would show percentage demos for women by race, but this comparison is interesting. It's dated August of '23.
I'd say with reproductive rights on the table and Trump stating he was going to protect women whether they like it or not, these numbers are probably no longer valid as I would think they'd skew even higher now. I know early voting says women were turning up at a higher rate than men, so I suppose we'll find out on Tues. There may just be a silent majority of women voters for Kamala.

Thank you R95; you're doing the Lord's work! One (albeit minor) factor in Dems favor is that gas prices are currently somewhat low. Even though absolutely no president ever controls gas prices, high gas prices make people feel cranky and want to lash out - on top of the already high food prices. So I'm hopeful that even these small head winds make the undecided, the indifferent, the checked out voters decide that they'll give the good looking woman a chance and not a guy that looks like he escaped from the memory care wing of the local senior center.

[quote]I canāt help but think that if TPTB had let Mighty Joe stay at the top of the ticket, we wouldnāt be in such a stressful nail-biter situation. A dump/joe rematch would have been signed, sealed, delivered a month ago. The American people declared their decision loud and clear four years ago and their preference between the two is today, as then, plainly obvious and decisive. Instead weāre here with an untested lady candidate in a complete toss-up race. Thanks, Pelosi.
What a fucking idiot is R94, and how he stinks of disingenuity.. Referring to Biden as 'Joe' and 'Mighty Joe' as if they were chummy referring to Harris as a 'lady candidate,' blaming everything on 'TPTB,' bandying about 'the American people,' and completely oblivious to Biden's accelerated physical and mental deterioration.
'The American people' have shown their idiocy in the past in voting for this dangerous imbecile Trump and they will do again, in alarmingly significant numbers, and yet he wants us to think that a Biden victory was certain -- in the proverbial wet paper bag that Biden couldn't begin to poke his way out of in the first debate.

Yes, Cincinnati is a lot more conservative than I would like. The Catholic thing is mostly the west side, from what I understand.
Disclaimer- I am not a native to the city. I grew up on a farm in rural Ohio. Everything I know about Cincinnati, Iāve had to learn from living here and what the natives have told me.
Anyway, we only have about 5 or 6 thousand registered voters in the precincts our location serves. Mostly white, older voters with a 60-70% turnout on Election Day. I have no way to know how many in our precincts voted early or by mail.
We donāt anticipate trouble. We may get one or two assholes (men, in every past incident) shouting about what acceptable ID is. They vote for that shit but think THEY shouldnāt have to show acceptable ID to vote.
Anyway, I know most of the people working the polls with me. Weāve done it for a few years together, so we should be fine.
But getting up at 430 am will suck majorly. And not in a good way.

R190 R192 I think the traditional take that "high turnout" helps Dems is no longer true. 2022 is where the switch was clearly documented. In the old days (20 years ago) the "low propensity" voters were by and large non-college, middle and lower-middle class... and those demographics favored Dems. Repubs were statistically much more dependable voters.... college educated etc.
In the switch post Tea Party/Trump/MAGA the low propensity voters (white, non-college, working class) are proportionately Trump voters... the high propensity voters (white, educated, suburban) and now Dem voters. "High turnout" elections now favor Repubs. In 2022 the expected "red wave" fizzled, in part, because off cycle elections have a lower turnout, and that favored Dems (in addition to the heightened engagement of man over the repeal of Roe).

Also, no spot other than maybe Sotomayor (diabetes) will become available under Kamala, even if she serves two terms. The reds will sooner die on the bench than allow themselves to be replaced by a Dem president.

R220 Not to get ahead of ourselves, but given that the Supreme Court has decided that the President can do anything she wants with no legal repercussions, wouldn't it be fun it Harris just ordered the military to go in and jail Alito and Thomas and threaten Roberts with jail if he didn't cooperate with appointing two replacement justices.

I think they are more likely to vote them down if the nominee is not at least a centrist, like Sandra Day OāConnor. I donāt think they would hold it, unless it were the fourth year.

I feel like if I never hear the word "complacent" again, it'll be too soon. That word has not been applicable at any time during Kamala's campaign, yet people have been warning against "getting complacent" nonstop. Complacency is self-satisfaction, smugness, satisfaction with the way things are and no interest in changing it. In reality, we all know this has been a nail-biter from the word "go," and there's been very, very little to be satisfied with. If we were complacent, it would mean we were satisfied with Kamala being up by a small amount within the margin of error.
We can also stop stop saying things like, "Vote like your life depends upon it." Either you vote or you don't, and you should, but you can only do it once. There's no super-intense method of voting that makes your vote count extra, nor is it like playing a slot machine repeatedly until you hit the jackpot.
Yes, I am one worn-out, bitchy vocabulary troll. I am also a grammar troll if called to serve. I cannot control Trump or MAGA or the media, so I work out my frustrations defending the English language. Sad!
Don't get complacent! Keep voting and voting! :D

R244, I got sick of the constant warnings against complacency four years ago. At times it felt less like a call to action and more like scolding others for not becoming neurotic messes.
I'd also like to add that if Kamala wins tomorrow, there is no need for people to remind us that we have to remain vigilant because of Donald Trump. DataLoungers sometimes act as if Trump is going to hide in our closets, jump out and say "Boo!" if we don't remain on constant high alert.
He will file frivolous lawsuits, delay, distract and try numerous dirty tricks. But it will be the job of the executive branch, the justice department and the legal team at the DNC to stop him, and I am confident that they will do the right thing (even milquetoast Merrick). No amount of worrying or hand-wringing by individual DataLounge posters will have any effect.

Oh please. First, Democrats are like cats, and we all know you can't herd them. As Will Rogers said, "Iām not a member of any organized political partyā¦. Iām a Democrat."
Second, this is the first time in my life ā and I'm 60 ā that the Democrats were in array from the moment Biden walked on to the debate stage and it became crystal clear he would lose. I think we owe the survival of democracy to Nancy Pelosi, who marshalled this plan through the party so effectively that it's just plain stunning. This election will be written about and studied for decades.
Third, if you actually think that the party doesn't police itself and ostracize (and sometimes too much), I'd like to introduce you to Al Franken, Anthony Weiner (sorry to include him), Alan Grayson, Howard Dean...

by Anonymous | reply 269 | November 5, 2024 2:28 AM |
No pessimism, R259. The Selzer poll was a bellwether. She revealed the hidden vote that other pollsters have not seen, probably because of some bias but more likely due to the fact that most pollsters have not figured out how to poll with any degree of accuracy and are weighing some factors incorrectly. They don't understand how pissed off women over 65 are about Dobbs despite the 22 midterms and the fact that when abortion has been on the ballot anywhere, it's gone for women's rights, even in red states. Women know abortion is on the ballot just as much as the names listed in the POTUS box.
Further, Shitler's surprise victory in 2016 was due to late-breaking voters. Thanks to Tony Hinchcliffe's Puerto Rico-is-garbage "joke", Hispanics have flipped to Kamala. Olberman quoted a poll in FL (I think) that two weeks ago had Hispanics for DonOld by 49 to 41; post MSG Nazi rally, it flipped to Kamala 82-13. Before the rally, the Harris campaign said that late breaking voters were going 2 to 1 for her; since, it's just exploded. Between them, Haitians, abortion [italic]and[/italic] marijuana on the ballot, I'm with R263. And if Florida is called for Harris tomorrow night, it's over. And I don't think FL is the first or only state that the PR remarks will impact; it might give her the votes needed to solidify GA, NC and NV (although I think she's ahead in NV and NC as it is).
by Anonymous | reply 270 | November 5, 2024 2:30 AM |

R270 - I don't want to give too much to Tony - he'll blow that out of proportion for attention the rest of his life. The whole rally at MSG was a shit show.
People act like he turned the entire PR population - they were going to vote for Kamala in larger numbers anyway. What that stunt did was pull the few percentages away and added in some undecideds or non-voters. But it's not massive.
Is it enough to tip things? Yes, but Kamala had the advantage all along. You can't lose women, blacks, Latinos, South Asians, gays/lesbians, trans and expect to win.

We forget that the first election that a lot of MAGAt remembers is Reagan's 84 total landslide and they yearn for the decisiveness that election gave the country (and are willing to eat that shit pie if it brings them that comfort). The question in that election between Dole, who was honest and told the American people he'd raise their taxes, and Reagan who lied and said he wouldn't, is so simplistic in its nature yet so powerful; it showed (probably not for the first time, but nevertheless) that [italic]some[/italic] Americans prefer lies to truth, fantasy to fact. And Republicans leveraged it increasingly; there is a through-line from Newt Gingrich's politics of personal destruction to the Tea Party to MAGAts and Shitler, who turned it into a cult.
And yes, they're in for some eye-opening results that will take them some time to believe.

Anyone who would be "moved" by a Rogan endorsement was 1) already voting for Trump, or 2) not voting.
Will a couple get off the couch and vote for Trump because of it? Sure, a couple. Will it make a difference? Nah, not at all. Does it peg Rogan as a douche and when Harris win will many folks pull away from his Trump stink? Yep.
Accounting for everything, if Harris wins, it was a dumb ass move. He doesn't help Trump but he could well hurt himself.

That's the thing; we haven't had any "barely won the EC" elections since the Bush years. The swing states tend to move together. Shitler got 304 to 227; Biden got 306 to 232. Obama got 332 to ROmney's 206 and 365 to McCain's McCain's 173.

The most impactful presIdent since FDR, the most unifying and de-escalatory public figure since Oprah or Mandela. And Pelosi had her henchman kneecap him out of pure self interest and long-simmering malice. Joe wouldāve once again consolidated an enormous coalition of sane, democracy-minded patriots champing at the bit to rid us of Trump for once and for all.
Unfortunately, this is just where we are ā neck and neck between Trump and an untested one-term lady senator. Regardless of how terribly things go tomorrow, history will look back with shame and embarrassment over the ouster of Mighty Joe.

Let's just look at the numbers. Biden won by 7 million votes, and 306 to 232 in the electoral college - including GA, NV, WI, MI and PA.
Those same people will vote for Kamala PLUS we have Republicans who can't vote for Trump anymore, more motivated women (particularly young women) voters, and several hundred thousand fewer Trump voters who died during the pandemic.
This was BEFORE Jan 6th, before Dobbs decision, before the MSG Nazi Rally, before all of Trump's court cases.
Do you guys really think he has picked up MORE voters since then? He's lost people - the MAGAs are just loud and they aren't going to change their votes.

I cancelled my newspaper subscriptions (Fuck you NYT) and was as depressed as Iāve ever been. Joe was a great president who brought this country back from the brink.

What is wrong with these people?
Anyway, I digress. I donāt have a lot of confidence in America anymore. I wouldnāt be surprised if Trump is able to slither back into office. Not one bit.

Based on his poorly attended rallies, it feels like MAGA has given up on Trump. Elon will have wasted all those millions trying to buy votes.
I hope she wins most of the swing states so the cries of ācheating!ā will fall on deaf ears. May prison and death come swiftly for the disgusting Donald Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 324 | November 5, 2024 4:51 AM |
r320 On 8 Mile/Base Line right off of Haggerty, I saw a couple of Harris/Walz signs on the Novi side and on the Northville side I saw a couple Harris/Walz signs as well as a Trump/Vance sign. I don't recall ever seeing Trump signs in 2016 or 2020 in this area. That's Oakland (Novi) and Wayne (Northville) counties.
In Washtenaw, which is extremely blue, I've only seen a few Harris/Walz signs off of Packard and Golfside. There are a lot of Progressives and college students in Washtenaw because of U of M and EMU.
And then there's this nonsense.
(Like I said, I'm apologizing in advance just in case)

R318 - those who are fired up for Trump are the same ones who voted for him in 2020. It's just his loud obnoxious base.
He has done nothing to appeal to get more voters - instead he's lost voters, particularly R's after Jan 6th.
The media has made this into a photo finish once again for clicks and views. They've sane-washed him. They cover him only to show both sides.
It doesn't mean there is more support. The only weak arguments they have are inflation and the border. Those assholes are not reachable - but that's not the majority of Americans.

But we're out of time. The rest of his mental decline will be visible only from the White House or Mag-a-Lardo.

I might know the answer, and as implausible as it sounds, they don't know about a lot of that. They live in a Fox news bubble of Propaganda where the important stories about Trump that we all here know by heart, are either "spun", or missing crucial details, or not reported on at all.
My brother lives in Florida and voted for Trump twice. We grew up in a strongly Democrat Liberal family, but he's mostly been apolitical Watches only sports. He's been married to a woman for 30 years who's Republican - (we didn't even know she was Republican. I don't think he did when he married her).
He's not allowed to watch any other news station. He's told to avoid the NYT and Wapo. He only knows about Hillary's emails and Hunter Biden's dick.
And the occasional real story he does hear, he's told it's "fake news" by his wife. Totally clueless.

Dixville Notch unanimously voted for Biden last time. On the other hand, it voted in the GOP primary this time, so 3-3 can be interpreted by both sides to mean whatever they want. But the real truth is that it's six fucking votes and completely meaningless. Just something for the media to talk about since the results that matter won't be in until tonight.

One thing I don't hear talked about enough by the media is the ground game. All the focus is on what issues and endorsements will lead to better turnout for each side, but little mention of how the differences there will matter. . Assuming the polls are accurate, the ground game will matter even more than usual. And from my understanding, she beats him significantly in this area. Lots more organization on her side. He has put his faith in some hired people that may just take his campaign money and run rather than actually run it well. But we will see soon enough.

I spoke with my mailman a couple of weeks ago and asked him (again, had the same convo 4 years ago) about ballots and being delivered on time, and he again assured me that the rank and file are well aware of DeJoy's effort to slow down election mail and they are having none of it. He says that when they pick up a ballot from a household mail box, they tuck it into one of their totes separate from the rest of the mail and they get handed off first and manually sorted to go directly to one of the many county election offices. They're doing everything they can to ensure that mail ballots get delivered asap in spite of DeJoy's efforts.

R419, Florida has 1 million more registered Republicans than Democrats, so the graph showing that there are more returned Republican ballots is not as meaningful in the context of this election.
To wit, how do Puerto Ricans in Florida register to vote? Among the 2.8 million Hispanics overall, only slightly more D than R with "no affiliation" coming in a close third. I know they're not a solid block, but when you have the polling switch from 49-41 Trump to 82-15 Harris after the MSG Nazi rally, it won't be reflected in party [italic]registration.[/italic]
Further, we all know that the retirees in The Villages are predominantly Republican, yet they've had numerous Harris events and Democrats in their midst say this is the first year they've felt comfortable putting lawn signs out and openly talking about their choice.
And finally, polling says that senior women are pissed off, fired up, and voting. They know Trump took their daughters' and granddaughters' rights away, and they are voting accordingly.
I'm not giving up hope despite knowing that it is a long shot. Florida is still Florida. Trump was gaining ground among Hispanics in Florida, but I can't see that trend continuing given the garbage comment on top of his mass deportation plans that will directly impact Hispanics in dramatic ways. The shift over the last 4 years in voter registration numbers doesn't bode well, but we are living through the worst election of our lives.

Berks County is home to Reading, PA (pronounced Red-ing), which is mostly Puerto Rican now (shout-out to my best biker buddy in Reading, Guillermo!) and decidedly [bold]not[/bold] rural. But there are rural areas in Berks County and they will go red for sure. BTW, Berks is the county where Taylor Swift grew up.
Dauphin County will go Dem -- Harrisburg is a majority black city, so don't count them out. But again, everything else in Dauphin County is rural, so...
And I wouldn't count on the UPenn kids voting for Kamala. A current presidential candidate (who shall remain nameless) went there, remember? Plus, the majority of those kids' parents have all kinds of money, so there's that.

Yeah - the graph at R419 shows a large percentage of NPA - no party affiliation. These are people who never voted before or are independents.
I believe many of them are voting for Kamala. The reason why people choose NPA is because the fucked-up state of Florida PUBLISHES your party affiliation online.
That definitely does not mean that there are more Trump votes.
It only shows who voted by their previous party affiliation. VERY misleading.

Hubby just pointed out one interesting fact about Florida registrations: DeathSentence has been extremely busy purging voter rolls going back years. The state reports [bold]active[/bold] registrations, too, so that might be deceptive in terms of the actual numbers of voters. And I cannot find a definition of "active" on the state's voter website, so who knows what that even means. Someone who voted in the last 2 years? 4 years? Some criteria pulled from Rhonda's ass?

A couple of my coworkers and I stood on a freeway overpass in Austin this morning with an American flag and several āVOTE!ā signs. We got great responses, including a motorcycle cop who flashed his lights and did that weird honk/siren they do when they go through an intersection.
This evening, as weāve done for every big election (national or statewide, like when Beto ran for governor) since 2008, a bunch of old friends and I gather at an old bar near the UT campus. Big Democratic hangout and all the TVs are outside and tuned to MSNBC and CNN. The moment Ohio was called for Obama in 2008 is still one of the most thrilling moments Iāve ever experienced and it was so wonderful to be with a few close friends and hundreds of like-minded people. I think the thing that we need to watch for tomorrow - if Harris comes up with a reasonably certain win tonight - is violence at ballot-counting centers in places like Detroit, Philly and Milwaukee. Remember the MAGAs banging on the windows of the counting center in downtown Detroit, in 2020? Screaming about fraud? I worry that this year, they won't be content with just hanging around outside.
I hope and pray no one is hurt but I just don't believe that will be the case this year. I also worry that, if any counting centers are breached, and ballots compromised or destroyed, Trump will use it to throw everything up to SCOTUS or the House to decide, and thereby "install" him as Pres. Long shot I know, but you all know he and his followers won't go away quietly.

Trump took FL by a smallish margin in 2016, she was expected to perhaps take it since I believe Obama took it in prior elections. The main trigger point of the night was when they showed NH being so close (Clinton did take it), and then afterwards it became clear that Trump had MI and PA in the bag. That's when she called to concede to him.

From following this campaign cycle very closely, R546. It's been pretty well accepted that Democrats did so well in the post-Dobbs midterm & special elections because those elections mostly drew from high-propensity, educated voters. In the past, it was understood that Democrats did better the higher the turnout. Per, the political professionals, that no longer applies. Another sign of the Great Realignment.

It was a long day, but we had no incidents of assholery. Just dumb or weird shit. Mostly people showing up who wanted to vote in this precinct but were registered in other counties (3 people that came to my table in just 1 hour), people who had moved but didnāt change their address with the BOE so they had to vote provisionally and fill out the address change thing. We had at least two show up that didnāt register to vote in time for this election (young males again).
The voting location manager told us that he clocked our check in times as 30 - 45 seconds, so nobody had to wait in line more than 10 minutes to get their ballot.
We did have issues with two of the three scanners fucking up about 30 minutes after we opened. Not sure why, but it got fixed within 20 minutes of them going down.
Now Iām tired and thirsty. But I will stay with you all for a few more hours.

FWIW, we are also an early pickup for the BOE so they can start posting results for the networks.
So any Cincinnati numbers you see start coming in are from our voting location and probably a few other smaller burbs in the outer limits.

I'm opptimistic! Surely the electorate knowing what they know of Donald Trump would never entrust their country to him again. Plus the women of America would never allow it.
