Maybe I'm wrong - but I don't think Vance is really all that brilliant, and he is charisma-free, real nervous and dorky, so I can't imagine him holding the cult members in thrall.

I’m almost convinced some of those people just force themselves to attend these things and barely pay attention, just like when they force themselves to go to church. They don’t even understand what’s being said half of the time, but they’re convinced their attendance makes them a better person and part of the group.

For the MAGAts, attending a Trump rally is akin to attending the Sermon on the Mount. But, they go primarily to be seen by their neighbors and fellow church-goers so that they can be accepted as being one of the truly enlightened. They leave because they are incapable of going more than one hour without stuffing their faces with food.

You need to track down the Rachel Maddow show from about three weeks ago where she went through several of Vance's appearances during the campaign on right-wing podcasts and showed clips. When he thinks he's just talking to His Guys, it's hair-raising what he says.

As I watch clips of the unchained, maniacal mess that his narcissistic marathon rally speeches are, I feel tonight as if we were all bracing for his approach to the White House as if for a nation-sized Category 5 hurricane coming all our way. I pray to the Universe in any possible way that sane heads prevail tomorrow, decide that Donald’s months-long sideshow was a nice comic diversion, and result in the election tomorrow—transformative on so many levels—of Kamala as our next President. And then hopefully the Trumpet can slide off the stage with Vivian Vance.

Unfortunately, a large last generation or two of white men raised on anger, video games, UFC fighting, instant-gratification online presences, bro-culture bonding, and worshiping of swag millionaire professional athletes, are voting this election. Maybe they’re also looking, strangely, for a father figure of some kind in Trump, one who they see as saying he’ll do all these things he talks about compared to their own dads who growing up might’ve been subordinate, distant, distracted always on their cellphones, or even absent from their lives??
