But when Days plays the Body & Soul storyline, it generally takes up the entire episode. It's not like B&S is one of several plots running that day. B&S and its offshoots like problems in Johnny and Chanel's marriage take up the full episode. YAWN! That's why B&S is really hurting the show a lot. And apparently why Ron got fired.

I’m noticing a pattern with Ron - Every time he gets fired from a show the vets and A listers trash him publicly.

Corday's NuInterview sounds very reminiscent of his old Soap Opera Digest ones where he'd announce his latest "Plan to Save Days!"

Peacock must've thrown a little money their way with the renewal, or else how can they explain so many vet returns? I assumed most of them were gone due to budget constraints.

Ken Corday throws some of his own money at Days. He’s a mega millionaire.

When the show is shot six months ahead, and the writing is even further out than that, you have to make some wild guesses about what will hit with the audience and what will not.

What has worked for soaps for most of their history is that they can quickly respond to audience reaction. Days no longer has that luxury.

Ron is far from perfect and doesn't always write the kind of soap opera I like, which is old-school 70s slow-paced, long scenes, melodrama that plays out over years instead of weeks, but I sincerely believe that he loves the genre and doesn't want to hurt it. In his mind, he probably thought that a campy storyline about a soap within a soap where he could go over the top and exorcise some demons would be a fun escape for the audience.

He miscalculated. He miscalculated on a lot of stuff, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Alaar messed with some of his previous stories and he got the blame. However, B&S is all on him, and like the rest of you, I believe that was what did him in. My two positives about Ron, he loves soap opera and he can write the fuck out of special episodes, like anniversaries.

My only wish for Days is to just go back to being a soap opera. No jokes, no camp, just plain whose the daddy, switched babies, and bad girls pulling the wool over the eyes of stupid men in love with the town good girl.

I’ve thought for a while that soaps should STOP listening to often reactive social media. Online forums tend to jump to conclusions and be overall impatient.

I think soaps need to focus on writing good stories.

Write some bibles for the next 3-5 years. Don’t let an actors whim to leave affect the story; recast when necessary. CREATE GOOD STORIES AND TELL THEM START TO FINISH WITHOUT INTERFERENCE is my wish. And stick to their vision.

To me, there is a difference between allowing fans to dictate story and making story adjustments to stop viewer erosion and/or a negative reaction to a particular story. All writers do that and have done that to some degree forever. Days can't adjust because they're too far ahead. I would never tell a writer to nix a story based on negative fan reaction, but if they were six weeks out like other shows, Ron could have made tweaks to calm the waters. Volumes could be written on the number of soap stories that were adjusted due to viewer feedback.

Agree that letting fans....or actors.....have too much weight in input on a story can be negative. It's a tricky balance.

But as R113 said, there's also been cases where feedback was good - either to stop a storyline that was tanking, or in some cases, to change story when a soap realized some recurring actor or guest was good and needed to be added to the show. Many cases of that. I think Patch was supposed to be a temp role before the producers saw him on screen and/or saw him and MBE together.

When Patch started in 1985, there were only about two weeks between taping date and air date.

But your point is taken -- he was not intended to be a long-term character, just some sleazy, kinda-scary guy who worked for Savannah Wilder & Victor (whom he called "The Big Greek", ha). IIRC, they originally intended to kill him off at the end of the Miami storyline -- an epic November-sweeps spectacle.

Using full names on soaps is a longstanding device to enlighten NuViewers or occasional viewers who may not know or recall who or how characters are related to others.

Amazon Freevee has a really neat little device to use while streaming soap opera, Neighbours. You can pull up this side screen at any time and it corresponds to the scene that's currently being played letting you know who the characters in that scene are with full name and a link to some bio info about the actor, which doesn't interfere with the streaming.

A musician-friend of mine knew Stephen Nichols in the early-'80s (before he landed DAYS.) They both drove part-time for a limousine/car service company in Los Angeles. However, my friend knew him & addressed him as "Christian" -- because there was already another driver (or maybe two?) named Stephen/Steve when Nichols was hired.

The limo-company asked him to choose another name to go by -- because it was just easier for the clients & dispatch. Clients couldn't remember last names, just that they liked "Dave" or "George" or whomever, and wanted that driver again if possible. So, Nichols chose to go by "Christian", because it sounded formal -- a chauffer's name.

I met Stephen once, at big a Pro-Choice rally in 1989 (Rancho Park). He immediately asked where I'd gotten my t-shirt. I don't know about any storyline reason, but back in the 80s when that scene would have been done (ca. 1987), there was a "fashion trend" where some women would only wear one earring. In other cases they'd wear two different earrings.

The other possibility is that Hope had just taken a phone call and done that old-timey move of removing her earring before putting the receiver up to her ear .. LOOL!

The single earring look was supposed to be one, bold, flashy earring that made a statement itself. And if you did two different earrings, then one was supposed to be very trendy looking, while the other something quite simple, like a little single stud. What you weren't supposed to do is exactly what Hope looks like .. wearing something from Alice Horton's jewelry box that makes you look like you just forgot to put the other earring on or lost it somewhere.
