Gosh, how I miss Poll Troll. Such a source of calm.

We also used to have a CPA troll who would give invaluable advice.

Our asshole ways always scare off the good ones. Alas.

Poll Troll was not given his due reverence the last time he was here. What if we beg for mercy? Flog ourselves?

Better yet, let’s sacrifice a troll in his honor.

Anything to get him back.

This Summer, he was all doom and gloom, predicting a huge Trump win.

He got called out on that, and flounced off.

It was my original intention to participate in the usual Election & Polling threads. I think I last posted about the Election around June. However, as the Summer approached I didn’t feel up to it this year.

On a personal level I have had a lot going on: my father developed dementia and had to go into a care home, my sister unexpectedly died, and my mother needs my support more.

I realized I didn’t have the same mental energy to commit to following the polls, numbers, & analysis as usual. As Nancy Pelosi said a couple of years ago when she stepped down as Democratic Leader, “To everything there is a season”.

Contrary to what R4 wrote, I never once predicted a Trump win, let alone a “huge” Trump win. It would be foolish to (1) predict a result for a close election months in advance, and (2) predict a big win in an era in which Presidential nominees are no longer able to win with huge margins in the Electoral College given the polarized nature of the electorate. All I said months ago was that it would be a hard-fought race and that Trump had a good shot at it. (This was also back when Biden had low approval ratings and was still in the race.)

Kamala has been making some progress, and although Trump could still have the edge on Tuesday, I was looking at a series of polling breakdowns on Ron Brownstein's account earlier and it's amazing how closely split Kamala & Trump are in the key states in multiple polls.

I hope you all have a good Election Night and that Kamala wins in the end. If my blood pressure can take it, I may peek in. 😲

I am sorry to hear about your father. My mother has early-onset Alzheimer's, and we finally had to put her in a facility about a year ago. It's a terrible disease.

Does the name "PollTroll" give you the impression that he believes that he is an expert, r9?

He always had a passionate interest in the topic and frequently provided decent insight.

Also when you last posted some pessimism in June with Biden like 8 points below Trump... you weren't wrong, looking at the then-current landscape.

R14, yes, I confess that I do enjoy the celebrity gossip threads and I do anonymously post on them. It's a break from the world of more serious issues, (including elections & polling!)

Hi, R16. Yes, I'm planning to check in tomorrow. I've been here on each Election Night for many years now. I haven't been directly involved lately, but I've been following many of the developments. There is reason to be encouraged across multiple metrics that things have improved for Kamala over the past week. But it's very tense, isn't it? 😬
