I have to circle back to this concept of a floating island of garbage. Yes, I realize it is a bit dated at this point. But I need to address a secondary point of irritation that I feel has not been addressed. That is the metaphor itself is flawed in geographic implausibility. Yes, it was a racist and offensive joke in a series of racist and offensive jokes, but it also puts forward the idea that islands "float" which is a misconception grown out of ignorance. To say that an island "floats" is to show that the American education system has failed. I unfortunately have had more adults than I can count say something like this out loud without thinking it through. This is what happens when you enforce policies like "No child left behind" that stripped funding from public schools and then follow that up with appointing Betsy "Charter-School Queen" Devos as Secretary of Ed to wrestle away even more funds from public schools. Betsy was a Trump appointee, his potential new appointee, if reelected has promised to be even worse than her. It truly doesn't make any sense for anyone who cares about public schools to even consider voting for Donny when the kids don't even understand the basic principles of surface land and tectonic plates.
P.S. Please refer Donald to this post for an appropriate reference of how to actually do "The weave"
REPUBLICANS ARE TRYING TO DISENFRANCHISE MILITARY VOTERS
r12 I have to say that would be a big mistake on their part HUGE actually. As someone currently serving I will tell you that the overwhelming majority of military voters will go for Trump. I have met some of the most over-the-top MAGA folks in uniform. Being anything other than a republican is something I often feel I have to keep to myself while at work. That is how much of an echo chamber the military is.
But let them do it if they please. Not the brightest or most researched decision ever made is all I am saying.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 1, 2024 2:40 AM |
r17 Baffling why they have chosen to go down this path. What is the rationale for it?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 1, 2024 2:42 AM |
r18 that's just it there is no rational. They make an assumption and then they act. No analysis, no planning, no feedback. It's like Trump coming up with those god-awful and insulting gold sneakers to win the black vote. "Black people like gunshots, gold chains and sneakers, let's make a gold foil sneaker and promote it while playing a rap song about getting shot. That will get the blacks on my side!"
This is how they end up with what they have now a mess of a party that no sane person with self-respect could support.
Johnson is planning to cast the very first vote of his life for Harris - in large part because of her position on reproductive rights. He has two sons, both in high school now, but he remembers when he and his wife were first trying to get pregnant.
"It was an ectopic pregnancy, Johnson recalls. That's when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus; a pregnancy of that kind is not viable and the condition, if left untreated, can lead to a devastating injury or death. His wife needed an abortion, and she got one. Then they got pregnant a second time, and shortly into the pregnancy, the baby lost its heartbeat. Again, his wife needed abortion care - the kind of care that women in Mississippi would not be able to access today.
"I don't have daughters, but I've got friends who have daughters who I've watched grow up with my sons here, who I have known since they were babies," Johnson says. "And the percentage of women that get pregnant and carry a baby through full-term the first time around, I don't know the exact numbers, but... it's more common to lose that baby the first time out, and maybe even the second time out. You hear people all the time getting pregnant and having no issues at all, but for most of the rest of the world, there's complications involved."

The newest Epstein information regarding just how close he and Donald were during the Trump administration *should* matter to every American.
It *should* get every parent to vote for Harris.
It *should be* the top news story on every network, until and after 5 November.
It matters. He was best friends with Jeffrey Epstein. There are photos and hours of tapes of their convos. Jeffrey knew enough about Trump, the inner workings of his White House, and our national secrets to be killed while in federal prison.
You can't say you're for "law and order", "for the children", you want to "protect women", or that "both sides are the same" and vote for Jeffrey Epstein's bestie friend.
If you vote for Trump, you are voting for a rapist pedophile who was best friends with a human trafficking rapist pedophile.

My bestie lives outside of Philly and has become "activated" since Kamala took over. She's been knocking on doors on weekends and phone banking. (She's not usually the type to do this) She is ECSTATIC at what she sees on the ground. It feels like it did when Obama was elected but the difference is that Democrats are much more united in purpose and much more "eyes wide open" than before. The evilness of Donald has wiped away any illusions and made people really focus on winning. Unlike the Hillary campaign there is virtually no internal strife about the candidate.

I actually remember from that documentary about JLo's superbowl half-time show, she had wanted to make the whole performance a political protest against Trump's detainment camps and deportations (specifically about the kids in cages). When the head honchos at the NFL got wind of her plans and tried to put the kibosh on it, she fought back VERY hard, risking them taking away the whole show from her.
That definitely won some goodwill for her in my eyes, at least for a few years. It surprised me because I never thought of her as a particularly political person, or even someone who read the news outside of the entertainment section.

This is worth repeating...IMO : If we do our job and take back the House, which is very doable, the new Congress will take office and be sworn in and elect a Speaker on January 3rd. That date is specifically called for in the U.S. Constitution. So on January 6th, Mike Johnson will not be Speaker and he will not have a majority in the House and he can shove is fake electors up his ass. I will also point out, and I could be wrong, and if I am I know DL will tell me, but there are states that are not a contest. They're Blue. So that's the baseline for Electoral votes. Then there are the "swing states." The governors of North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin are Democrats. They will not tolerate any bullshit with fake electors. And Georgia, has Secretary of State Raffensperger, and he is the Republican who blew the whistle on Trump and recorded his extortionate phone call, and he will also not tolerate anything funny. So I think we're going to be OK. They may file cases and posture in court, but it will go no where.

This is 2024's version of the Comey letter, which caused undecideds to break heavily for Trump in the last week of the 2016 election:
Top officials with Harris’ campaign said Friday she is winning over undecided voters in the final days of the race, with Trump’s ill-fated rally at Madison Square Garden playing a major role.
“Our internal data is telling us and showing us that we are winning battleground voters who have made up their minds in the last week, and we're winning them by double digit margin,” a senior campaign official told reporters on a conference call.
The official said focus groups with undecided voters in battleground states show the racist remarks from Trump’s surrogates – including a now infamous quip by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe about Puerto Rico as a “garbage island” – was breaking through the noise of the final weeks of the race.
“This kind of language, the Madison Square Garden stuff, the stuff Trump is closing this race out with, is not just impacting the Puerto Rican community or Latinos,” the campaign official said. “We are seeing with undecideds writ large that they really don't like what they're hearing, and it really kind of crystallized” the choice between Harris and Trump.

I have never known so many first time voters (seriously how do you make to your 50s and never vote?) Republicans voting for Kamala?!? Lots of them. Some people who voted for Trump 2 times who won't get fooled again and are just sitting the whole thing out. He's getting his ass kicked handily.

Another high profile lady DL loves to hate on, publicly going in for Harris/Walz and America.
"Reese Witherspoon announces that she has voted for Vice President Kamala Harris:
"I voted today. ✅ Top of my mind, as I considered all candidates, is protecting women’s rights to medical privacy and reproductive choice. This is a critical time in our shared history to vote for the candidate that represents the future we want to see. That’s why I voted for Kamala Harris for President. For my daughter and for the millions of hard-working American women who value our freedoms. I want to protect democracy at all costs. I love my country and no matter what happens in this election, I’m here to move our great nation forward in a unified way. 🇺🇸""

Here's a prediction. Donald is going to be evaluated and found to be mentally ill with dementia or something related. Or maybe he will have a 'stroke." And Biden will pardon him because of his age and his health. No one will argue with that. Age and health are great issues to hang a pardon on. He will also pardon Hunter. One cancels out criticism of the other. He will also call for healing the nation. Kamala will be asked and she will not comment on Joe's actions. Game over. Donnie will be permanently damaged as far as running for office anymore. In fact Melania may put a pillow over his face. She becomes a rich widow, and his kids fade away because no one cares about them. Flynn Stone and Bannon will face new charges and go to prison.

R276 She's the only pollster who had the balls to publish it. Everyone else revised Trump upwards, they refused to believe any poll that showed Harris up much. They played into his hands and gave him (and his lunatic followers) the ammunition to pretend he had it in the bag and a Harris win would be a rigged election. Now the silver lining is that Dems, feeling way behind and serious underdogs, worked our asses off and maybe better polling would have dampened some of that. We'll never know, it is what it is. This poll may give white women in Ohio a little nudge - something is happening here and you need to get out and be part of it.

I think there's a far more mundane explanation – the current guy simply doesn't have Baldwin's comedic timing, even as his impression is more precise.
More than 75 million Americans have already cast their ballots as of the Sunday before Election Day. That’s over 48% of the total number who voted in 2020 (154.6 million), indicating that early and mail-in voting has become increasingly popular methods to vote and become a new normal in American politics.
In Georgia, more than 4 million have already voted — marking nearly 80% of the state’s total 2020 turnout, according to the University of Florida Election Lab’s early vote tracker.

I don't see how that determination to vote can't be good for Harris. Biden is [italic]that[/italic] hated... the economy's not [italic]that[/italic] bad. I think this is a reaction to Trump. I don't think there's anything out there to suggest Harris has a problem as a candidate herself. The rotting pumpkin, though....

I'm not sure those ads are that effective. They're so awful you don't want to believe them. I get the concept - and it's a good one - but a bit heavy handed. The first one was far easier to take. The whole "I'm Your Republican Congressman and I get to decide" concept could be very effectively applied to pretty much anything.

The ad at R414 is uncomfortable to see, but that’s the point. I think these have been very effective. Everyone has either a mother, sister, daughter, aunt, niece, wife or female friend that has been or will be impacted if Trump gets elected. If he gets in and does away with the Affordable Care Act, makes cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, men will suffer too.
Margaret Atwood herself tweeted this illustration after it went viral. Heavy handed ads and purposeful images are making an impact on social media. They’re getting people thinking, talking and voting.

In a surprising turn, Staten Island—known as the only NYC borough with a strong Republican base—has officially endorsed Kamala Harris. The Staten Island Advance, the borough’s primary newspaper, didn’t hold back, calling Harris “the only choice in 2024” and offering direct, “tough love” to readers.
For context, this is the same Staten Island where I spotted a Trump supporter just yesterday, proudly sporting Trump gear… tucked inside a garbage bag. That’s the kind of “stronghold” we’re working with here.
This endorsement is a massive statement on how even the most conservative-leaning areas in NYC are shifting, with local sentiment seemingly growing tired of Trump’s rhetoric and rallying behind Harris for a different future."

Newsweek op-ed piece by a guy who lived near the Walzes in Mankato. Gwen was his teacher and Tim coached him in 8th grade track. The other former students who have written op-pieces and appeared on TV and at rallies seem to truly support the Walzes and appeared to have genuine mentor/mentee relationships with them. This guy is a different story though and he just wants attention for being on "I'm former student of Tim and/or Gwen" train. This guy admits he hasn't voted in an election in 2004. While he brings up good points to have grievances with in politics, it's hard to find sympathize with this guy because he didn't vote in 2016 or 2020 (the previous shit show election years which much worse than 2004). He says Kamala picking Tim to be her running mate changed his mind this election cycle. He tries to make his op-ed piece seem inspirational, but you get the vibe that he was more of acquaintance with the Walzes and some of the stuff he mentions like Tim building the set for the brother's play, prom sets, and other things were mentioned to fill up his op-ed piece.

How good is @KamalaHarris and @KamalaforPA’s late game ground game in Pennsylvania? My perspective as a Lehigh County voter:
We’ve had canvassers here multiple times this week from Kamala’s team (talk to two amazing @Columbia students today), making sure my wife is voting and has a plan (she does). I mailed in my vote last week and it’s already been cast, I confirmed their data tells them exactly that (means their data is good). Neither of us have any registered party affiliation since we moved from Texas recently.
What’s wild?
Not a single Trump canvasser at all. Ever. Not a single one. Trump’s team has access to the same data, which means someone from Trump’s GOTV should have knocked our door. Ground games win elections and the fact that I’m anecdotally seeing a robust ground game is not only encouraging, I think it’s a sign of a huge win for the Vice President.

I'm in full panic mode. Why are the polls so tight considering the anecdotal evidence of Harris' strength?
by Anonymous | reply 524 | November 4, 2024 8:17 PM |
Maybe because of the modelling and weighting. I gather they take the data and then adjust it to reflect composition of the electorate in the area polled, based on census data but then there's also aspects of past patterns. I don't quite get it but there's a chance they're adjusting incorrectly based on past precedent.
by Anonymous | reply 525 | November 4, 2024 8:19 PM |
I suspect there are a lot of bullshit polls, R524.
by Anonymous | reply 526 | November 4, 2024 8:20 PM |
It could be that the pollsters and the pundits interpreting their work are accurate and we'll be on the knife's edge all tomorrow night. Or it could be that they're assuming an electorate like the last one and adjusting to make this year's emerging patterns conform to 2020's, quite misguidedly. The recent IA poll and a few other indicators (e.g. very high female participation in early voting) suggest the latter.

R518, I’m actually saving the fine print on those - who sent the mailer out.

And it will feel sooooo good!

Even though r513 's friend said that they were non-affiliated, Elon and his evil gang were able to read his internet trails and figure out that he was very likely to vote for Trump, thus the many emails from the campaign. They were spot on.
This is what they are now counting on instead of knocking on doors

So I know why they didn't say something like this in the SNL cold open, but I kinda wish at the very end of the mirror bit they would have added:
Kamala: "And girl, we're about to make history."
Maya: "Just like Obamala."
I feel like that would have gotten a HUGE applause.

Everytime one of the "debaters" says something like, "we STILL haven't heard her policy on xyz" and you see everyone else nodding vigorously, and then Pete starts to patiently explain x policy (that Kamala has herself explained 3,000 times btw) everyone immediately shoots their flags up to change the subject to something else. Even though they JUST said they've been frustrated by the policies not being explained to them.

FYI, we were told at our election setup tonight that Jill Stein has dropped out of the race in Ohio. No reason given.
If someone asks why she isn't on the ballot, they need to write her in following the correct procedure.
Not sure if she's been pulled from any other states, but it might make a difference.

I know their votes are needed, but I'm looking forward to not having to hear constantly about "undecideds" who couldn't make their damn minds up earlier in this election cycle and get off on all this extra attention, despite the obvious contrasts between the two candidates. And we won't have to deal with their wishy washiness again until the start of the 2026 midterm election campaigns.

Not quite. Her name is still on the ballot, but voters are told that a vote for her will not count. Reason: a technicality.

R587 not to mention climate change and another potential withdrawal from the Paris Agreement if Trump gets in. Here in the Pacific with countries like Tuvalu, Tonga, Kiribati and Solomon Islands already planning permanent repatriation of their populations to other countries as they are routinely swamped at high tide - it’s fucking awful.
Then countries like Australia (to where many of our Pacific family may have to end up moving) with annual worst on record fires and floods - climate change is now and if countries like the USA withdraw from Paris once again, what impetus to the BRIC countries - major carbon polluters themselves - not to follow suit?
by Anonymous | reply 589 | November 5, 2024 4:56 AM |
R587 I can comfortably say that people “from afar”, in the UK or EU - as well as people from Asia, Africa, South, Eastern Europ and Central America and the Pacific, are well aware of the potential impact of a Trump victory on the planet. We always have been, having been through this in his last presidency.
