Martha created something great from nothing. She didn't start out a rich, bloated mess like Ina. On one hand, she's loved and respected for her standards and teaching skills, while simutaneously loathed for her perfectionism and shark like acumen. You can't expect a person to be good at all things. And yes, Martha is a victim of the double standard. Would she have been indicted, had she been a man?

You know, I never thought about it like that but you're right. Coming from a home that did very little in the way of homemaking and had few expectations about it, I find Martha's content fun and creative. It doesn't drudge up bad memories for me. For others, they loathe it.
I did hate when the documentary tried to make it out that most of her hate came from men. That might've been true as far as the corporations she was working with, but a lot of the criticisms and negative press were coming from women. All criticisms I've heard of her over the years have come from women. They don't like attractive or pretty women who choose to use their education or intelligence for homemaking skills.

R37, that was the whole point of the hatred. Martha projected a cold, steely perfection so when she had her downfall, it was jumped on by the media as well as the public. She was certainly a victim of her own image. In the end, it had nothing to do with her innocence or guilt. I think the only good thing about that Cybill Shepherd bio was at the very end where Martha's career is in shambles. She wanders into this Country Fair and everyone swarms around her, inviting her to judge pie contests, to see their quilts, etc. These people were inspired by her and that's probably closer to reality than anything else in that movie.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 1, 2024 6:59 PM |

WHEN SHE'S 83, FERGAWDSAKES!
When would Martha actually BE old and forgiven for looking her age---at 95?!
But DO NOT tell me that Martha Stewart is not known outside the US!!
In Google Search, type in "Is Martha Stewart known in....?" and fill in the rest with a country or continent. "England" will bring up that she has a Wedgwood product. "Asia" will bring up that she has expanded into China. "Australia" results in naming a woman entrepreneur known as "the Australian Martha Stewart."
Martha is on the official Botswana government Facebook, endorsing a native product. Hungary? She was known for a bit for dating the Hungarian billionaire developer of Microsoft Office.

As for any comparison to the late and still inimitable Johnny Carson, there is none.
Carson did late-night television, period. No books (Martha has over 100!); no products; no "message" of aspirations beyond a punchline to appeal to an audience; no nothing else. There was no "Carson Empire." No "Carson Media."
So of course Johnny could walk the streets of Europe relatively incognito.

I can picture Martha coming from a place like that, as I've known others who epitomized that kind of background. I liked her saltiness-that was quite unexpected.
She's always been seen as a control freak. "Serial Mom" was an homage of sorts to her. She does seem to have loosened up a bit since prison, although it sounded like she was a bit "bossy" there. . She probably also doesn't have the energy she once did as she's gotten older.
She hasn't exactly been on the trail of a cure for cancer with her career, but I have to respect what she accomplished and how she understood the culture. There probably are women who wanted something a bit "more" out of their lives that she was able to deliver.
I feel bad for her daughter---she didn't get much love and also inherited neither parent's looks. I was curious what Martha's siblings' were like--only a couple of them commented.

Alexis refused to let her talk about them in the documentary, but I'll bet Martha is the greatest grandmother in the world.
"I cooked them the best gourmet meals I could conjure up," she told PEOPLE in 2023. She loves teaching them all about baking, etiquette and arts and crafts — in typical Martha Stewart fashion. I’ve taken them to the most unusual places in the world, and they’re only 12 and 13."

r105 again, I just saw a clip of an interview with Martha and she said that she hated the scenes of her outside looking like a lonely old woman limping around, she said she had recently had surgery. So I stand corrected.

Martha's coolness and bitchiness turned me off over the years. But this film moved me greatly. She clearly carries a lot of wounds and sorrows. She seems rigid, bitter, and angry. AND, despite all that, she has kept on going, creating, connecting, being her unassailable self. I felt a lot of compassion, respect and love for her, watching this. Life can be really hard, even with all the money in the world. I hope she keeps on embracing imperfection, and softening her stalwart heart. You go Martha.

I knew someone who worked for her in NYC. She was late to work one day and Martha asked her why. Her air conditioner had broken and she had trouble sleeping. Martha sent over a new A/C. When the girl quit about a year later Martha asked her to return the A/C.

How and when did she learn all her skills? From the intricacies of gardening to cooking anything and everything and then all the crafts. To become an expert in all areas and run an empire is impressive. Did she ever sleep?

The doc gets into that. Basically, the father whipped the kids into being good gardeners because it was the only way they could afford food.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | November 3, 2024 3:56 PM |
I will say though, in Martha's defense, the A/C girl loved working for her. She had to relocate for family reasons. I've forgotten exactly why. Though she loved working there she acknowledged that Martha was a big, high riding bitch. She had no sympathy for coworkers who quit or were shocked because Martha was a bitch. Her attitude was how could you watch her for just five minutes and not know she was a bitch.

The first half of the documentary reminded me of the charming flair she shared with millions of people eager to learn her homemaking tips and tricks. When I lived on a tight budget not far from Bedford, NY in the late 1980s, I followed Martha’s directions to create a natural Christmas wreath of fir tree branches and red berries that I gathered while walking in the woods. That walk and wreath lifted my spirits.
To go from a high point in a billionaire’s bio to see the FBI’s James Comey––of all ramrod straight people––nail Martha for telling a lie and put her in prison, was jarring. In the last part of the documentary, from any angle, it seems a light went out of her eyes and never returned.
I give Martha credit for forging ahead, though it meant enduring a vulgar comedy roast and reverting to vulgarity in kind. So au courant.

I’m not a huge fan but I enjoyed the documentary. Really respect how she was able to grow her empire.
It wasn’t clear about whether she actually lied to the DOJ about the insider trading or if she just took her broker’s advice—but it was obvious the DOJ (and Comey of Hillary’s email fame) was looking to score a celebrity so he could be in the spotlight

I found the jail part crazy. Part hollywood yet also worse than we were led to believe. That part about Martha touching the prison guard and then being placed into confinement? Wow. It makes me wonder if she was actually downplaying what she actually did. Like how she was called out for cheating on her first husband before he cheated on her.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | November 3, 2024 5:51 PM |
R152 Even though she is a bitch and a liar, I don't think she is stupid enough to willfully violate prison rules (unless it was something like sneaking food into her cell.) In the documentary she said she was complimenting the guards' appearance. I wonder if she placed her hand on one of the guards' arms in a familiar manner or something like that, patting their arm. Then again that doesn't seem like something uptight Martha would do.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | November 3, 2024 5:59 PM |
I enjoyed it. I didn't get the impression she is lonely, but I can't imagine she's willing to engage in the compromises and negotiation that a LTR requires. I wish there had been more --any?--time devoted to her daughter. Curious about her.

On the Mark Burnett show, it was a genuine example of her personality, IMO. She struck me as that stern, unbending teacher you had in elementary school who wanted you to do it perfectly but in the end really cared for her students.
On a Conan episode, he was in her professional kitchen and asked Conan to get some cookie cutters out of a drawer. He couldn't find them and she told him not to get them messed up in the drawer. Conan said "that makes you crazy". Martha said yes so Conan did it even more and Martha laughed.

R214 - that was SO satisfying. Bethenny had been making digs at Martha over that show for DECADES. I believe Martha.
In terms of Martha's parents not being very warm - that was VERY common among her parents' generation. Particularly that both parents were 2nd generation and their parents were immigrants from Poland and struggled with the language and integrating into the US.
They had FIVE kids and persevered during the depression. Both parents worked with 5 kids- they were busy just staying alive and having food on the table. That was an extremely common experience.

Martha was, when she first got into the book (and later tv) game, she was perfectly positioned to get attention from the NY publishing world.
The husband was in the business already, and he and Martha (mostly her, of course) had done what so many lower-level executives in NYC were, or wanted to be, doing at that time, buying an old pile north of the city to turn into a showplace.
One thing Martha doesn’t get enough credit for is really changing how cooking, gardening, and entertaining books looked. She was really one off the first to have so many well-styled, glossy color pictures in those type of books. The images were as important as the content and served to sell the lifestyle as much as the technique.
These were books that thought you how to do something only. They offered a context in which that thing was just a part. Not only were you learning how to prepare a crown roast but what role it could play in a whole dinner scene.
She is a great American story, complete with rise and fall and redemption and all of the dramas that surround that.
Martha, about 15 years ago, partnered with a national builder to style the look of a series of large housing developments. One of these was about a mile from my house and out of the blue one day I got a call from her office.
Several years earlier, I had purchased some hazelnut trees inoculated with truffle spores that after five or so years, would hopefully start to produce truffles. Her office had been given my number by the company we bought them from as one of the first that were sold and while she was nearby she wanted to come and look at ours, with the goal of buying them to transplant on her new property she had just bought in Katonah, NY. I assume she wanted larger trees which were nearer to their productive age.
She stopped by after her ribbon cutting and was absolutely lovely, but all business. She showed great interest in my farm and the shiitake mushroom production we ran at that time there. I was very impressed by her deep knowledge of fungi and you could tell she had done her research. After about thirty minutes she said she was very interested and would be in touch when she got back to New York.
After about a week I got a call from her personally thanking us for the visit but unfortunately she had found out that the climate in Katonah wasn’t quite warm enough for the truffles and would not be buying them.
I’ve always been a fan, or at least an admirer of her skill, but meeting her in a business sense gave me a new appreciation for her general ability and work ethic.

I just wish she would have admitted what advantages she had with her marriage to her wealthy husband, his involvement in the publishing world and living in Westport did to escalate her business.
She was smart to marry rich, then to promote her catering business among business execs in CT, and have her husband have her do catered events for book launches.
And I don't believe for a second that she didn't get into some hanky panky when she worked on Wall Street - she talks about it briefly "what happened in the back of those cabs - but I don't want to talk about that".
She's used her beauty and connections just as much as her smarts. They make it sound like it was an organic self-made billionaire - and it never is. She was literally on 3rd base - with a lot of money to fall back on with her husband's career and tons of connections.
Her husband helped in a HUGE WAY to make her who she is - particularly navigating the publishing world. She acts like she did it all on her own.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | November 4, 2024 10:29 PM |
IMO, Martha was pretty easy on Bethenney, calling her a "pest." That's not so bad. Bethenney is just ultra-sensitive and probably was still "smarting" from not winning on The Apprentice.

R223 - a 'pest' is a very short and accurately dismissive way of saying she wasn't right for her organization. Martha needs to look to see if someone would fit into her world and environment.
Honestly - that loss was one of the best things for Bethenny. She really needs to be her own boss as it seems she falls out with every single person she comes into contact with.

So what happened to her publicly traded company? Does it still exist, but she does not own any of it?
Can you still buy Martha Stewart stuff but she doesn’t get a piece of it?
Also, they don’t talk about her main show that went on for years. Just the regular Martha Stewart show with her in the Kitchen. Isn’t that still on? Or is it just the one with Snoop.
And also are she and Snoop boinking? She seems to be a borderline slut.

R227 Martha is a nun compared to the average gay man. A few affairs while married and a few long term relationships after divorce sound pretty normal.

R229 - Did you know that gullible is the only word not in the dictionary? Go look it up!
Women never divulge how many men they've actually been with. The 'innocent' kiss with a stranger on her HONEYMOON in Italy gives you an idea that if it's good for her, she's open to have or use sex.

Homekeeping seems to be a very confronting topic for many of you that brings up a lot of trauma. You may not be able to see it in your own comments, but we certainly can.
Also, Martha mentioned wealth is something that she found attractive. She stayed married to Andy for 30 years. There are many more efficient ways to grift.

I was raised in the 1970s when most women even those who graduated from top universities moved quickly into the role of homemaker with very few and far between having lifelong careers. That Martha Stewart was able to break through that and as a broker and successful business person is incredibly brave and inspiring. I know first hand how hard that can be as I worked at Bear Stearns on the trading floor in the early 1980s where there was quite literally just two or three women on a floor with hundreds of men. And the women had to act like men to survive. Martha Stewart didn't change who she was to be successful as a business person.

Anyone else get the impression that in her younger days Martha was probably a huge freak in the sack? I don't just mean her on-camera confession in the Netflix doc that she liked how aggressive her husband was with her sexually-- which of itself is a fairly unusual thing for a woman in her 80s to say-- it's her whole vibe. People with an intense need to control and micro-manage tend to have a few skeletons in their closet. (I'm sure Martha's are beautifully organized.)

Her appearances with Conan were always delightful but this has some camp value to add to the thread. Martha had just gotten out of jail and Conan makes some jokes about it but at the end they bob for apples and she ties Conan's hands. She does it VERY well.

I’ve read that she comes across as cold and unlikable in the documentary, but that’s how she presents herself all the time. She has no warmth. During the Covid and Demic, she surround herself with acolytes and dependents. I think the reason is that there’s no person to challenge her. No husband, no lover ,no best friend, no relative.
by Anonymous | reply 245 | November 5, 2024 2:26 PM |
R239 - we forget - and she purposefully leaves out - that her husband's father was a stockbroker and investment banker, remember? Don't think she walked in there in 1967 on her own and they just gave her a job without having some influence from her father-in-law?
The thing is - she looked for and used her opportunities, but so much of her success was reliant on her husband's family, his position in the publishing world, their contacts, etc.
She worked very hard - no doubt about it - but she was also an opportunist and had advantages very few people ever do. This whole "I'm self-made" description is bullshit - as it always is.
by Anonymous | reply 246 | November 5, 2024 4:02 PM |
Isn't that the case with any supposed self-made success? There are always opportunities lurking in the background that aren't acknowledged.
Maybe an inheritance, an expensive education, someone footing the bill, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 247 | November 5, 2024 4:04 PM |
I don't see what's so wrong about looking for a marriage that will boost your chances for overall success as a human. For some people, it's finding someone who's a good cattle farmer, for Martha it was social mobility. It's not like she was Melania or something.
by Anonymous | reply 248 | November 5, 2024 4:06 PM |
She didn't purposefully leave it out though R246. Ive seen many interviews of her where she talks about him being a stockbroker and getting her involved. She also talks many times about her husband negotiating her first book deal.
by Anonymous | reply 249 | November 5, 2024 4:08 PM |
R249 - but she really never gives her husband any credit.
Then she slams him for infidelity - which was wrong, particularly with her assistant - but in those letters when he said his house doesn't feel like his home anymore - I get it.
Imagine coming home from work and there are all of these assistants and workers, projects being worked on everywhere for photo shoots, pots and pans in the kitchen for test experiments.
And he knew about her affair (supposedly only one) when she worked on Wall Street. You have one affair - and another 'innocent kiss' with some stranger on your honeymoon - then bet there were a lot more men than what she's copping to.

Andy was supportive of her moves, but I don't think he was ready for or happy with how successful she was. Alexis seems to have paid for all of this more than anyone else.

by Anonymous | reply 254 | November 5, 2024 4:38 PM |
I watched it last night and I thought Martha came across as a hard, driven person who, because her upbringing, focused on her career when she couldn’t handle her personal life and how it was falling apart. Conflicted, she doesn’t seem to know if she’s happy, even though her lifestyle is enviable. There were obvious moments in which she wanted to, and could have, cried but couldn’t allow herself. Overall, and despite of her serious flaws, I felt empathy for her.
I thought it was a well made documentary. The choice of title and not showing anyone on screen in interviews except Martha is a bold one that serves to drive home the idea that this whole drama is the result of Martha being the sun in a universe of her own making and how that has placed Martha where she is today.

Plus the documentary made it clear that she got into wall st, and eventually publishing because of her husband and his family.
She married up. Which is part of her brand. She mainstreamed “aspirational”. It was all part of her brand.

Martha also made it clear in the documentary that she was totally seduced by the Stewart's money. The sister was driven to school in a Rolls Royce, he had a Mercedes and an American Express card. He sent her money so she could see him every week. She also noted, very amusingly, that she had no knowledge of the finer things because she ate olives with pimentos that came out of a jar.

I was into Martha before she got really popular. I got her books when she was a caterer and have the first issues of her magazine. I can hear these answers in her voice and her desire to MAKE EVERYTHING BETTER, which she is all about. So, of course she wants her critique out there!

It would have humanized her a bit if we could see her with her grandchildren. I think Martha would be a fantastic grandmother-- she doesn't have to do the nurturing thing, which very clearly is not one of her strengths, but she can teach them a lot.

R265: It's clear that her values and outlook preclude what has based for being "human" for the last 5 or 6 decades. She knows who she is and touchy-feely isn't part of it. She can connect, but as a fellow prisoner said, "in the beginning she seemed bossy". Apparently, Alexis didn't want the grandkids in the doc.

l loved it. I love the story of her handsome father and how strict he was and how she says she’s just like him. I also liked the illustrated Loved the story about her trip to Florence and when she kissed a stranger in a cathedral. She really was a born leader and very talented. . I liked the prison segment where they show how she handled her days. The prisoners became fond of her. It was a very sympathetic portrait of her yet an honest one too. I think the part of the doc she hated was the scene where she’s wandering through her Turkey Hill gardens. She thought it made her look old and lonely. Even in her old age she is just as vain and mercurial .

R277 - Amen. Trump is vulgar, gilds everything and is crass. Martha is the exact opposite. She's been around him enough - she knows he's stupid and treats women like dirt.

Back when Matthew Shepard was murdered, there was a demonstration in front of the Plaza Hotel (for some reason) and quite a crowd showed up. It was a peaceful type of protest but traffic was halted all around. On 58th St. in front of the Paris theatre I noticed Martha behind the wheel of a big black SUV. She was stuck there. She didn't look upset and waited patiently until things got moving again. But I wondered why she was driving herself and if she had her driver tied up in the backseat because he was too slow.

After reading her unauthorized biography, it was plainly spelled out that Martha and her siblings adored their mother. She was self sacrificing to a fault.
Her father, on the other hand, was a spoiled only child who failed as an adult and not only did his own children have contentious relationships with him but family from his childhood despised him.

And, it was funny when Big Martha would get peeved at times when Little Martha would get a bit grand. Maybe peeved isn't the right word but you could tell Big Martha was just very simple and sensible and not that impressed by the la di dah fine living persona of her daughter.

Andy's second marriage to her assistant seemed doomed from the start - just a messy and hurtful thing to get with her assistant who was living on the property. Secondly, she wasn't very attractive - which I'm sure cut Martha even deeper.
It feels like it was a purposeful move to blow up the marriage once and for all.
There are 2 sides to a divorce - Martha was not innocent and admitted to ONE affair - but I don't believe that was the only one.
When 2 people get divorced and the other person is completely silent and doing well while the other keeps talking and raging about it, trying to keep hurting the other one - then there were other problems.
Society wants to believe that men are always at fault in divorces - but rarely do men ever talk about the divorces. It's usually the woman that talks about it endlessly and goes for scorched earth approach to get sympathy and to 'clear their name'.
I wish she was more honest in accepting her side of the blame - turning their home into a business, being away with catering gigs which are usually on the weekends, etc. while he funded everything.

I read that unauthorized biography of Martha from the 90s, Just Desserts.
In the 70s, one of Martha’s close friends was talking to Martha about het divorce, and being lonely. Martha offered to have Andy fuck her if she wanted-“Andy is very well endowed.” The friends declined.
If you liked this documentary, you should read that book. Martha is a trip, and always horny.

I always had a sneaky suspicion that she was a cheese grater of a person and this documentary proves it. The grave sin of choosing a little knife over a big one is not worth talking to someone like they were the bottom of your shoe. If she can't handle a simple exchange with her fellow human, how she wasn't exposed way sooner is amazing. I vividly recall a Halloween episode back in the 90's where she pretended to cut herself and not one crew member offered help and that was very telling. I used to work in television and production knew how to care if they deserved it but we could also make life difficult.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | November 8, 2024 10:07 PM |
I thought Martha was perfectly fine speaking to that woman. She was definitely upset because she felt the woman was using the wrong utensils but her tone and demeanor was "do it this way. doesn't that make more sense, isn't that easier". There was no name calling or yelling. She was stern but also trying to show her how to do it.
The marriage is certainly interesting because it sounds as if Martha was terrible to Andy but in the end, he wanted it to end, not her and she did all she could to try to hang on.

Andy's third (and younger than his eldest child) wife just demonstrates what I said above about Andy being a manipulative shit.
He likes pitbull women who do all the hard talking for him, who make him look kind by comparison. But make no mistake, he is all for it behind the scenes.
For example, he had no issue with Martha stiffing craftsmen and artisans on their wages. They would come to him to complain when Martha wouldn't pay them, and he would always back her up. Slimy behavior from two greedy cunts.

I think her kindness to her jailmates was genuine. I think her attitude about K-Mart said alot- I loved that she felt that K-Mart's shoppers want beautiful things too.. And the best moment of that documentary was when some cunty interview was telling her your viewers/readers are going to feel about themselves because they cannot MAKE A CAKE LIKE THAT! How we love to beautify people who become our personal ideal and then cast them down when it is clear they are too much like us. In addition for justice to work everyone needs to be judged by the same standard. I watched the documentary last night not knowing much about her and came away outraged at the public's cruelty to her, saddened by how unjustly she was treated, and understanding of the losses she suffered on her way to success.
As a man though, I know how woman always seem to have to do so much more so much better in order to get the respect of a man who is allowed to be less performing and unconcerned about who he burns to achieve success. All double standards are dehumanizing and unjust.

If I remember correctly the scene in which Martha scolds an assistant for using a small knife to cut an orange instead of a large knife was taken from some footage shot just before Martha went to prison, so it's understandable that Martha would be a bit stressed. For what it's worth the woman cutting the orange could not have seemed less fazed by it all.

Her daughter is a somewhat amusing cunt who seems to have had the life force squeezed out of her in adolescence and she still hadn’t recovered. I thought it was hysterical that she called her mother Mothra instead of Martha.

It's really strange that a place so bitchy has such a big problem with Martha. It's like she had a vagina and does things that your Mom did to make you angry or something.

I think Martha is great. I'm also confused when DL gets cunty about terrific divas...who ACT JUST LIKE DLers!!!!
You would think it would be "lets make Martha our queen!" or "Patti LuPone should be President!!"
Instead, there's fawning over mediocrity like Ina "Fartin" Garten and Sutton Foster.

R326, apparently Alexis has a good relationship with her mother now. I have read that Alexis said that when she was growing up Martha made her wrap her own Christmas presents and that there was never any food in the house. Sounds like a case of the shoemaker's children going barefoot.

This video pretty much gets into all of it. Sounds like a Martha version of 70's and 80's parenting where Gen X kiddos were latchkey kids left to fend for themselves. Martha mortifying Alexis by not closing the door when she was in the shitter when people were around is hilarious.

I used to listen to the radio show Martha’s daughter cohosted. She is the most fascinatingly cold woman. Clearly smart and at times very funny but harsh in a way you almost have to respect. At some point she just up and decided she hated her cohost (Jenny Hutt), and dropped her on a dine. There’s an extremely awkward Today show interview with the two of them that reflects this.

What did Alexis do on her show---this is the first time anyone mentioned her having gainful employment.
by Anonymous | reply 333 | November 10, 2024 1:25 PM |
She co-owned a gym in the Hamptons, owns some real estate in NYC, wrote the book, and her Sirius show was also on the Hallmark channel. And to be fair, from what I hear Alexis is doing her best to be a good Mom. I believe the stories around here that she was a bitch, but people are works in progress.
I also heard she was chummy with Josh Kilmer-Purcell when they met out of his husband's short gig with Martha.
by Anonymous | reply 334 | November 10, 2024 1:28 PM |
Didn't Alexis also own a motel in the Hamptons?

Alexis has always struck me as someone like Sandra Bernhard, their personalities are built around being cooler and more worldly than practically everyone around them. Add to that her parents’ messy marriage and you get Alexis.
She obviously loves Martha. She not only went to every day of the trial but fainted when the guilty verdict was announced.
by Anonymous | reply 336 | November 10, 2024 4:42 PM |
R336 - you'd faint too if your gravy train was going to the slammer for a while!
Just kidding - but it feels like Alexis is this rich only child who has been able to indulge in every petty grievance and was determined to make both of her parents pay for it.
I'm sure the tension in that home wasn't fun and being an only child was difficult, but a lot of people have had to deal with a lot more than that.
Part of me has some sympathy - she probably didn't get a lot of love and affection and both of her parents were busy with their careers. It's one thing for Martha to say she didn't get much love and support - but she also had 5 siblings to interact with. Alexis was all alone in that house.
It would be hard to reconcile growing up with more than enough money and not having your parents' attention due to their careers and other pursuits. They had 1 child and couldn't make her feel loved and wanted.
As much as I want to call her ungrateful and spoiled - that feeling of not being wanted or cared to stays with you forever. Worse yet - if Martha now shows all this love and attention to her grandchildren - that would be really fucking hard to take.

Martha was kind of a shit mother, but she provided Alexis with the lifestyle of a Duchess. Not a bad trade off, and one that most people would gladly settle for.

350+ posts and nobody has mentioned the little Ode to Martha in the 1995 gay classic film "Jeffrey."
Darius (Brian Batt) and Sterling (Patrick Stewart) are an adorable NY couple separated by what - 20 or 25 years? When Jeffrey (Steven Wright) stops for a visit, Martha Stewart comes up in the course of conversation and Darius asks "Who's Martha Stewart?" Sterling clutches his pearls briefly and explains: "She writes picture books about gracious living. Martha says that everything will be all right as long as you can make a nice dried floral arrangement. I WORSHIP her." Patrick Stewart was priceless as an aging queen at the height of the AIDS era, and it meant a great deal that an actor of his caliber would take on a gay role and put so much of himself into it.
So, yes. By 1995, Martha was an established household name and brand among the gay dinner party set. Many of us held her in the highest regard - she showed us a path to creatively transcend expense with style and thoughtful design.

R362, One of the things that surprised me most about the documentary is that Martha came from a very humble background. Dad was a salesman (not a good one according to Martha) and mom was a teacher. They had six kids and so little money so that's why her dad was into gardening and farming, to feed the family and also to barter out their goods. Ina's dad was a Dr. and her mom was a dietician and she often said she had a lot of material things growing up.
by Anonymous | reply 363 | November 21, 2024 8:51 PM |
Martha has always been up front about the fact that she's from a working class Polish family from NJ. She's never tried to erase her background, I admire that about her.
Unlike many Dataloungers who grew up poor and working class but pretend they're rich WASPs.

[quote]Martha created something great from nothing. She didn't start out a rich, bloated mess like Ina. On one hand, she's loved and respected for her standards and teaching skills, while simutaneously loathed for her perfectionism and shark like acumen. You can't expect a person to be good at all things.
I agree with R25, Martha Stewart did create something from nothing. And she made the point that ordinary things don't have to be done slapdash and without quality. She found beauty in everyday things: why have kitchen shelves stacked with Ikea plates that are functional but dirt common?
If you're going to be spending a lot of time cooking, why not have the tools for it that look and work beautifully (as esoteric as some of her recipes were, most were far from it; and why she spoke of the beauty and utility of a good polished copper pot, she wasn't advocating a whole pantry filled with electronic devices nor did she advocate specialized tools that had but one hyper-specific use and cost a fortune. She could have afforded the most luxe kitchen things in the world, but more than the most expensive batteries de cuisine, she showed simple enamel ware or white ironstone or depression glass -- stuff that could be bought for nothing until her taste made them sought after. As many and as big and as expensive as her houses got to be, they were all essentially simple houses, more cozy than Masters of the Universe grand.
And that had to grow out of some self-awareness that even though there was a market for what she did, there was also of fine line of not being too pompous and grand. As badly as she may have concealed it at times, the imperious side of her perfection was checked by what, on TV, was a sublimely casual, easy perfection. Finding the beauty in a simple dish made well, served on a nice antique platter than cost a fiver at a tag sale. I think she was acutely aware of both her faults and how they might have played badly on TV. She was unusually adept at explaining a process in simple steps that made her audience think, 'I can do that,' and that is a genuinely rare skill that she had down better than anyone.
The curious thing to me about Martha Stewart is that balancing act she did: of a sometimes brittle perfectionist against the easy charm of her on-air, in-print presentations. She did change that world in that the old Better Homes & Gardens was designed to be as easy as slipping on some old shoes, and about as exciting or able to stimulate taste buds to want something. The quality of studio photography was awesome, the accompanying text always exactly right and in the perfect, subtly persuasive tone. If you're to have a house, why not try to make it beautiful and easy looking? If you're to make a dinner, why not make something simple but a little different and focus on the taste and experience? Ostensibly it was all very easy. In reality, I have much respect for her many talents. She was aware that her manner was the equivalent of resting bitch face, a little stiff and Connecticunty, a lot demanding, and having to temper that fully aware of how it would be perceived. That she was able to manage it all, to put a good (and I think sincerely good) face on things when she had another stone cold perfectionist side is not an easy balance. Yet she was brilliant at it, able to show just a hint of her Dark Martha, the prickly, perfectionist. But she suppressed under an unflappable sense of ease at any challenge and a superb talent to impart information, to break down the steps of anything (from a towering croquembouche, FFS, to how to save a few bucks by sharpening your own garden tools.)
I don't think I should have liked to have worked for Martha, or think that she was always a joy to be around, but I do have quite a lot of admiration for what she accomplished.

I thought it was good, if predictable. I learned a lot about her I didn't know.
I was surprised a subset of women hated her so much just because she was marketing "perfection" and they, as "normal" women didn't have the time and money. I mean, Martha Stewart living was niche. It didn't demand that everyday women buy it or pay attention; so the vitriol sort of stunned me. It was an hobby/interest thing like anything else.
Martha really was a Leo's Leo. Lol.
