He was a Puerto Rican actor and humanitarian who passed away 30 years ago earlier this week.
The son of a soprano and an engineer-turned-restaurateur, Julia grew up in San Juan, where he received a traditional, well-rounded private Catholic education before setting his sights on acting. He first performed in local theaters in San Juan but later moved to New York City in pursuit of bigger opportunities. While waiting for his breakthrough, his charisma and charm made him a successful salesman.
His big break came on Broadway, followed by a flourishing Hollywood career. His work was diverse and eclectic, with credits that included Titus Andronicus, The Panic in Needle Park, Eyes of Laura Mars, Dracula, The Escape Artist, King Lear, The Threepenny Opera, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Morning After, Moon over Parador, Tequila Sunrise, Presumed Innocent, The Addams Family, Street Fighter, The Burning Season, and, of course, Addams Family Values.
Despite his success, Julia said his most meaningful work was mentoring at-risk youth. He also volunteered at food banks and homeless shelters and made generous donations to small opera companies in memory of his mother.
Tragically, despite his talent and humanitarian efforts, he passed away from a stroke induced by stomach cancer at the age of 54.
