The fall of the house of Usher-1960. Vincent Price-blond. IT WAS HORRIBLE-JUST HORRIBLE!

by Anonymousreply 3October 30, 2024 10:51 PM

Louis Jourdan elevates Dracula wonderfully but the rest of the movie is stuck firmly in the psychedelic 60s.

by Anonymousreply 4October 30, 2024 10:54 PM

Don't Look Now.

I liked Frank Langella's Dracula (1978). He was prime beef at the time.

by Anonymousreply 5October 30, 2024 10:56 PM

Black Christmas, apparently.

Does Silence of the Lambs count as horrior? A classic, whatever it is.

The Changeling (1980, George C. Scott)

Ghost Story (1981, Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., John Houseman).

by Anonymousreply 6October 30, 2024 10:59 PM

Langella had big hair. Drac didn’t have big hair.

by Anonymousreply 7October 30, 2024 10:59 PM

Yes-Black Christmas! Get it-it was fun-scary and the house was great-Andrea Martin was there!

by Anonymousreply 8October 30, 2024 11:03 PM

Rosemary's Baby.

by Anonymousreply 9October 30, 2024 11:04 PM

Classics, "Let's Scare Jessica To Death" and "Audry Rose". So engrossing, you'll forget that you already ate your Snickers bar.

by Anonymousreply 10October 30, 2024 11:05 PM

Murder, She Wrote

by Anonymousreply 11October 30, 2024 11:09 PM

Suspiria 2018

Midsommar 2019

The Devil's Backbone 2001

The Omen with Gregory Peck and Lee Remick

by Anonymousreply 14October 30, 2024 11:22 PM

R13 - I have to admit to loving the Suspiria remake, and think it’s so much better than the original.

by Anonymousreply 15October 30, 2024 11:34 PM

PBS Great Performance series: Louis Jourdan in Count Dracula. "Posh horror film" describes it perfectly. Louis was beautiful and sexy.

The Ruins.

by Anonymousreply 24October 31, 2024 12:53 AM

R24- That one was okay- I recently learned that it was based on a novel of the same name!

by Anonymousreply 25October 31, 2024 12:59 AM

Dressed to Kill

by Anonymousreply 26October 31, 2024 1:03 AM

Definitely agree with The Innocents (1961), The Haunting (1963) and The Changeling (1980) the best and most elegant, haunted house movies.

Only Lovers Left Alive. Although I don't know if it's a horror movie. It's about vampires, though. I love the story and the acting in this.

by Anonymousreply 37October 31, 2024 2:09 AM

It Follows. It's a creepy littler fever dream. I'm also going to mention another Maika Monroe movie called The Watcher, it has a Hitchcockian feel and the ending was a sucker punch. Agree with Oddity, it felt like a bespoke horror film with all the intersting props, they were their own characters and also the same filmmaker's Caveat was quite suspenseful. Possum is more disturbing but that puppet is pure nightmare fuel.

by Anonymousreply 38October 31, 2024 2:15 AM

The Haunting of Julia

by Anonymousreply 39October 31, 2024 2:17 AM

Let the Right One In 2008

Two by Park Chan- Wook:

Thirst 2009

Old Boy 2003

by Anonymousreply 40October 31, 2024 3:01 PM

The Exorcist. I thought horror films were pretty cheesy and usually avoided them. I thought this one was very well done.

by Anonymousreply 41October 31, 2024 6:12 PM

R31 yes, that's it

by Anonymousreply 42October 31, 2024 7:38 PM

In my opinion the classiest are: The Queen of Spades

Eyes Without a Face

Rosemary’s Baby

The Hunger

Don’t Look Now

The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)

Repulsion

Les Diaboliques

Hangover Square

The Innocents

by Anonymousreply 43October 31, 2024 8:31 PM

Not posh, but The Howling was supposed to be a respectable horror movie. If I am remembering correctly, the werewolf Eddie’s transformation was considered pretty impressive for the time. It looks so cheesy now, but I still think it’s a pretty good movie.

by Anonymousreply 44October 31, 2024 9:37 PM

Nothing can hold a candle to the transformation in American Werewolf in London.

by Anonymousreply 45October 31, 2024 9:49 PM

R24, the book is SO much better. It really creeped me out. The movie was just kind of meh.

by Anonymousreply 46November 1, 2024 12:15 AM

R24 R25 The novel was better than the film, at least on first viewing. I read it when I asked a librarian for a good scary book and wasn't disappointed. I'll watch again...
