Jon Stewart defends racist comedian at Trump rally
Jon Stewart defends Tony Hinchcliffe's controversial appearance at Donald Trump's Madison Square Garden rally.
“Obviously, in retrospect, having a roast comedian come to a political rally a week before election day and roasting a key demographic … probably not the best decision by the campaign politically, but to be fair, the guy’s just really doing what he does...There’s something wrong with me. I find that guy very funny. I’m sorry, I don’t know what to tell you. I mean, bringing him to a rally and having him not do roast jokes? That’d be like bringing Beyoncé to a rally and not…”

Its always been a shame that Jon Stewart has ever had a platform. I've never found him anything but pretentious. His 'too cool for school' posturing is just tiresome. Its easy to be an unconvincing contrarian. That's his schtick.

Oddly enough I was just reading this comment and I realized that it applies to Stewart here
It's a Gen X thing. Gen X is just like that, no matter which side of the aisle they are on. "Those irony-loving Gen X weirdos pride themselves on how little they take anything seriously, Trump included. Generation Daria.
But when you see it come out of someone else’s mouth, it hits a lot different. The image of this cocky little pipsqueak being that nasty made them feel as gross as Trump should."
That was why the Puerto Rican thing broke through. Because the person who said it was a Millennial. It's like if you're sixteen and drinking and smoking weed but you're horrified when your ten year old brother starts doing it.

R6 Sorry, why are we still shitting on Gen X? Not you, R6 but that post you linked, and there was a thread about ragging on Gen X for loving Trump...I am a 51 year old Gen X and I have been so anti-Trump that I was mortified from the second he descended the golden escelator nine years ago and I have never stopped being horrified and appalled by him. And before that, I loathed him so much, I can safely say that I have never watched a single episode of The Apprentice in my life. I had no idea it had gone out for fifteen seasons. My BS detector has had his number this entire time. Where as my 74 year old mother hopped on the Trump escalator, going up, and it has pretty much ruined our relationship. So, is it the older end of the Gen X? Am I on the younger end? Do I just run with the cool crowd? I simply cannot relate to being lumped into this Gen X = Trump category, and I take offense to it, considering the degree of visceral fight/flight I have felt about him pretty much my entire life.

Stewart has been very good in recent weeks. And speaking usefully to a viewing audience who isn't glued to cable news etc. I understand his perspective... and a roast comic is going to say offensive things by definition. There are two central problems to Stewart's position on this:
1. At a roast the expectation is to hear offensive things. The very nature of the event is that folks give "permission" for the offense to happen. This was a rally focusing on hate of immigrants. In order to elect a US President. No Puerto Rican American gave any "permission" for the racist offensive comments, "jokes"...
2. A roast comedian's jokes that we laugh at... should be funny in addition to offensive. Nothing in the routine was witty or funny.
So, in conclusion, Stewart is wrong. Very wrong.

I thought I was going crazy this election cycle. I would try to watch the Jon Stewart Daily Show stuff, for nostalgia's sake, and he was irritating the hell out of me. I couldn't tell if I was overreacting but he seemed to be doing "both sides" take downs, and it felt like he was normalizing Trump in the process. It was upsetting to watch, so I stopped.

Do people really go around perceiving each other as belonging to a particular nicknamed generation and judging them in this way? It seems really brain-dead to me. "Oh, he's a Millennial, so when he says something offensive, it just hits worse than if an Xer says it," or whatever the argument is. They make life way too fucking complicated. Why don't they just learn to judge someone's words and actions for what they are?

R35, this so-called 'comedian' made a series of vile, racist jokes about multiple groups of people at a *Presidential rally*. This wasn't just some comedy roast in a stand-up club. It violated basic standards of decency. And there were other speakers who made vile comments about Kamala Harris, calling her a prostitute and other disgusting things. This is not just about being PC. It is about basic standards of decency and morality for the Presidency of the United States.

Tony Hinchcliffe is actually pretty funny and most of the jokes at the roasts during the past 3 years (including all the ann coulter jokes) were written by him and were HILARIOUS. I only watched some of his own stand up. It just wasn't that funny and I turned it off, but it wasn't racist. It was just boring and not that funny
But the statements he made at the rally were just stupid and racist. They weren't jokes. Even most of the audience was shocked. You could see it in their faces. Some people even booed. But of course, many cheered. He knew his audience were a bunch of low IQ scumbags and he didn't even bother to write clever jokes. He just made stupid statements that a 9 year old MAGA child could have come up with
SHAME ON JON STEWART. He obviously didn't listen to the stupid shit Tony said at the rally. Comedians are stupid people. Many think themselves and other comedians have the right to say anything and no one should be allowed to complain. They are very much like MAGAts in that respect. It's sad to realize Jon is the same way. Again, SHAME ON JON STEWART and the stupid racist MAGAt tony hinchcliffe

Political humor has never been Tony Hinchcliffe's strong suit. Even when he appears on Joe Rogan, and the conversation turns to politics (mostly steered by Rogan), you can tell how uncomfortable he gets because he's tragically ill-informed and not invested. Picking him to open a political rally was stupid from the Trump campaign, which may have cost them the election.
Tony's an insult comic in the Lisa Lampanelli tradition and soars when he's roasting celebrities. He was dumb to use that same approach by punching down regular people at a fucking political rally.

Comedians see themselves as underdogs and have a cult-like loyalty to each other, which is why Stewart defends these turds, feeding into delusions that their ancient, unoriginal jokes about homos and dark-skinned people are on par with the anti-establishment brilliance of Lenny Bruce or George Carlin.

This thread (like Biden's comments last night about "garbage") distracts from the more important issues and news that can determine who wins this election. Some general comments about this thread:
1. Stewart was very anti-Biden since he returned. It wasn't "both sides" stuff, he just thought Biden was too old and couldn't beat Trump. Since Harris took the lead, he (and the show... the other comedians on the nights Stewart isn't on) has been effective and wickedly incisive about the danger of Trump.
2. Gen X is a generational cohort that has embodied "post-modernism" - cynical and self-referential. They are quintessential slackers yet also are full of grievance about how they feel left out of what their culture has for "others"... in short, there is fertile ground for the kind of anger and distrust (and speculation about conspiracies) that grows Trumpism. It's not surprising they are the one cohort where the majority support Trump.
3. Related to pt. 2 - the MAGA movement would not be possible with out the dismantling of faith in institutions that happened in "the 60s"... an analysis too big for this thread. Sorry. I digress.
Watch The Daily Show if you haven't recently. All of it seems really effective and important attacks on the MAGA insanity.

[quote]So many of you are condemning Stewart without watching the show. He unequivocally slams Trump and supports Harris.
No, he doesn't. Stewart both-sides issues to the point that he's unwatchable.
Jon Stewart lost all credibility when he abandoned [italic]The Daily Show[/italic] in the run-up to the 2016 election. He and Colbert had their stupid rally in DC, drawing in millions, and then did absolutely nothing to capitalize on it. He egged DonOld to run, thinking it would be just shits and giggles and he had no chance of winning... then Stewart got bored and decided to retire (rather than build a team to host TDS, alleviating the pressure on Stewart to be "on" every night) and walked away from what was the most influential news program on air. TDS was where people from 18 to 34 were getting their news; they don't read newspapers, watch cable, or frankly, pay much attention to politics in general. An invitation to any politician to appear on TDS was golden, prized well beyond any invitation to appear on cable or the Sunday political shows because it mainlined right into Gen Z bloodstreams.
And then Hillary lost by 90,000 votes spread across three states... all of which have major universities and colleges where TDS was extraordinarily popular. If Jon Stewart had been on the air and told his audience to vote, the trajectory of this nation and the world would have been considerably better. All Stewart had to do was stick it out for another 6 months.
And he's done nothing to earn any grace since he abandoned the country in our time of need, and belittling Biden over his age while not saying a word about Mango Mussolini exhibiting the same and worse is just diarrhea icing on a shit cake. I can't forgive him.
