Hal Prince wanted to adapt FOLLIES for the screen. It was to be set on a studio backlot about to be torn down.

There was no official cast set, but from the Broadway cast Hal Prince said he would have been happy to retain Gene Nelson as Buddy and Dorothy Collins as Sally.

Prince’s press agent John Springer wanted to see Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds in those roles, with Henry Fonda as Ben and Liz Taylor as Phyllis.

The project was reportedly scuttled when 20th Century Fox chose to do Peter Bogdanovich’s musical AT LONG LAST LOVE instead.
