The creative death of David Fincher

This saddens me

I think going down the Netflix rabbit hole of total creative control and no need to make films with theatrical prospects but him on the Francis Ford Coppola path

I've always felt that Fincher was overrated. Never got the love for SE7EN (I found it a dreary slog much of the time), but I do think ZODIAC and THE SOCIAL NETWORK are both worthy films. But his recent work has been consistently disappointing. GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO was flat and inferior to the lower budget Swedish film (no masterwork either, but the lead actress was much better).

GONE GIRL had a similar problem in that Fincher was taking a potboiler novel and dealt with every scene using the same cool distance to the point where it felt like the film was just droning on. When Tyler Perry comes onscreen, he injects some comic life into the movie at last. Carrie Coon is also good but I found Rosamund Pike rather meh ( she was much better in SALTBURN).

MANK only worked intermittently and I gather his most recent Netflix film THE KILLER is just awful.

I suspect Fincher fancies himself a latter-day Kubrick.

So then your entire thesis is based on your complete lack of judgment.

Have you seen The Game or Panic Room, r1?

I'm a fan of Se7en and The Game but I think Panic Room was his last really good one. I liked The Killer but I'm a sucker for anything for international travel and I fully acknowledge that it's not a great movie. Zodiac is the worst movie he's made, imo. Horrible cast and inexcusably long.

Oh piss off, R2. Not everyone thinks Pike was the ideal Amy. Honestly, Goop would have been ideal and she was no more "too old" for that role than Affleck was for his.

R3, I saw both THE GAME and PANIC ROOM, but it was a while ago. I will say PANIC ROOM was effective, but I don't recall enough about THE GAME to comment.

Squid Game is a rip off of Liar Game which is a rip off of Battle Royale

Was there ever a creative life? Making mean, nasty, misanthropic films is not creative. He does know where to place a camera, so there’s that.

Creative death? Seriously, OP? Are you somehow unaware that Fincher created the literal FIRST streaming-only show, "House of Cards"?
