A pizza shop owner is sentenced to 8.5 years in prison for threatening workers with deportation

BOSTON (AP) — The owner of two Boston-area pizza shops convicted of forced labor for using physical violence and threats of reprisal or deportation against employees living in the country illegally has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison.

Stavros Papantoniadis, 49, of Westwood — the owner of Stash’s Pizza, a Massachusetts pizzeria chain — was sentenced Friday in federal court to 102 months in prison, one year of supervised release and ordered to pay a $35,000 fine.

Papantoniadis forced or attempted to force six victims — five men and one woman — to work for him and comply with excessive workplace demands through violent physical abuse; threats of violence and serious harm; and repeated threats to report the victims to immigration authorities for deportation, according to prosecutors.

In June, a jury convicted Papantoniadis of three counts of forced labor and three counts of attempted forced labor. Papantoniadis has remained in custody since his arrest in March 2023.

Sounds like a good business man.

by Anonymousreply 1October 29, 2024 2:36 AM

He looks exactly like I expected him to.

by Anonymousreply 2October 29, 2024 2:37 AM

Good. That is such a lowly thing to do. Most illegals want to just work hard enough to fly under the radar until they gain citizenship.

by Anonymousreply 3October 29, 2024 2:39 AM

That's the mean reason these assholes want internment camps. When you ask douchebag hillwilliams with landscaping fleets how they'll staff up, they get a gleam in their eye.

by Anonymousreply 4October 29, 2024 2:43 AM

MASSHOLES!

by Anonymousreply 5October 29, 2024 2:50 AM

This creep used undocumented workers to make himself profits and then threatens them.

Pig

I would like to deport the people who came up with this WIDE OPEN BORDERS policy.

by Anonymousreply 7October 29, 2024 2:53 AM

We share the same given name.

by Anonymousreply 8October 29, 2024 2:54 AM

he should change his first name to something more appropriate, like Oink.

by Anonymousreply 9October 29, 2024 4:19 AM

Good, he deserves it based on the details. he didn’t just threaten once to report them… he used sustained fear.and coercion and abuse to literally enslave them.

by Anonymousreply 10October 29, 2024 4:24 AM

Imagine being so foul you hire illegals for cheap labor and then use that shit as blackmail to keep them working and scare them. But what else is new. Another white man who just ain’t shit.

by Anonymousreply 11October 29, 2024 4:43 AM

Unfortunately, I'd assume 90% of these people abusing illegals never get caught or brought up on charges.

Hope his pizza shops close and he's bankrupt.

And here's the thing - with a name like that, he may very well be first generation Greek.

I hate these fuckers taking advantage of other immigrants. But it happens in every single culture. Russian, Polish, Mexican, Indian, Chinese - they all abuse recent immigrants to the US from their own countries.

by Anonymousreply 12October 29, 2024 4:46 AM

“Illegals” 🤦🏾‍♀️

by Anonymousreply 13October 29, 2024 4:47 AM

Which is why illegal immigration is immoral. It’s exploitation. They’re not documented thus they can be used and abused and no one would know.

by Anonymousreply 14October 29, 2024 4:49 AM

That's a quite a stretch, r14. Most people would say that abusing your employees is immoral but you've managed to blame the very people he mistreated. Well done.

Mark my words...

Trump "wins" and this goon is pardoned plus the victims get deported.

by Anonymousreply 16October 29, 2024 5:56 AM

A is for asshole

by Anonymousreply 17October 29, 2024 6:00 AM

That's a rough and fugly "49".

by Anonymousreply 18October 29, 2024 6:10 AM

This kind of thing is why illegal immigration is BAD. If we need immigrants (and we do), they should be admitted via a clear and transparent process that protects them from people like this and ensures everyone knows their status and rights (I’m not talking about knowing the immigration status of individuals, I mean immigrants and everyone else understanding that everyone here is working legally and you can’t exploit them).

This guy is a dirtbag. And when I use Doordash I’m a dirtbag on a much smaller scale. So are people who hire lawn services. You think those guys get a paid sick day when they get heat stroke from mowing your lawn? You think if they cut off a finger and go to the ER it’s paid out of their employer-provided health insurance that’s reflected in the cost of your lawn service? No, everybody else subsidized it for you. Offering them a glass of water doesn’t absolve you. I get it, no other options and maybe you don’t want to buy and maintain a lawnmower and you are older. But it’s not right.
