Explosive device burns ballot box, destroying hundreds of votes in competitive Washington state House district

These boxes are becoming a bad idea.

Now this is some real election interference.

I'm sure Trump will speak out about it posthaste.

IT WERE THE DUMBOCRAPS THAT DONE BLOWED IT UP!

There's nothing wrong with the boxes, OP. The problem is with the creeps who want to prevent people from voting.

That race is extremely close and the Republican is a former (and probably current) Proud Boy. It makes perfect sense that one of his followers would do this. (The box was in a heavily Democratic area.)

A ballot box was also torched in Portland (OR) over the weekend.

The people responsible need to be thrown in jail for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 4October 28, 2024 7:06 PM

Damn -- what are these ballot boxes made of? Cardboard?

A good ballot box should not be able to be destroyed by mere fire.

by Anonymousreply 5October 28, 2024 7:10 PM

They have open slots that you can stick burning things into, whether a stick or a burning cloth.

by Anonymousreply 6October 28, 2024 7:17 PM

They should have these boxes only at polling places inside during business hours. That's how it's done here in Nevada.

There are some mailboxes that don’t have openings. You push it through metal rollers and into the box. Metal they should switch to that so no one can shove anything through.

by Anonymousreply 8October 28, 2024 8:13 PM

Not sure why anyone would be surprised at this happening.

by Anonymousreply 9October 28, 2024 8:37 PM

Well shit. I guess I wil have to mail it. But I’m sure they could do it in a mailbox too. In the PO they could pitch it out too. My town is crazy enough to do that. I remember showing up to vote and the (I’m sure) MAGA lady at the desk said she couldn’t find my name dismissively, as if she expected me to just turn around and leave. I got a notice in the mail so she had to look again and find it. They’re all fuckers. Guess I’ll deposit it in another town.

My ballot is done and sealed and ready to be dropped off. I signed up for tracking my ballot if I mail it but maybe they lie. It already says great your ballots in the mail and it’s sitting here right next to the dollhouse so maybe it’s a lie. I trust very little these days. I voted no on Prop 33. I could not find a definitive answer on whether a section 8er like myself would be effected either way, activist groups on both sides, it just repeals something and doesn’t replace it with anything, and, ultimately, I’m already living in a clannish MAGA town in CA that hates outsiders, subsidized housing, and the homeless, so I went with my gut and no. Locals need not have the opportunity to decide my future.

They're going to have to end up having armed guards at all the ballot boxes to protect the ballots and armed guards at all the voting stations to protect the poll workers until the election is completed. I don't know why this isn't already happening. With Trump relentlessly talking about election fraud and voter fraud and encouraging MAGAs to go and "poll watch" this should have been foreseen and a plan in place.

For sure, ballot boxes need to have CCTV cameras trained on them 24/7, with the message imprinted on the box. "You are being surveilled and any act of sabotage will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law". I'm a Washington state resident, but this year has me nervous, so I actually brought my ballot to the elections office and put it in the slot inside of the office.

The Datalounge in a nutshell.
