Schmaltzy 70s snoozeathon or addictively nostalgic rockers??
Do you like the Eagles?

I was just indifferent to them. Didn’t see what the big deal was about them. Still don’t.

They did make some good albums in the 1970s. They capture and popularized the country rock rock vibe that predecessors Flying Burrito Brothers, Rick Nelson Stone Canyon Bank & Poco were already making, but they managed to break it into the mainstream music culture. Randy Meisner was the best singer among them. I wouldn't go to an Eagles concerts today even if you gave me free tickets to their absurdly priced shows. It's basically Glen Frey and accompanying musicians playing mover a taped soundtrack with Glen mostly lip-syncing or singing over prepared music.

When I’ve looked at their performances they looked so full of themselves.

[R2] Glen Frey has been dead for years. Are you thinking of Don Henley?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 28, 2024 1:56 PM |
I like bald eagles.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 28, 2024 3:15 PM |
They were like sonic wallpaper during my high school years.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 28, 2024 3:32 PM |
Both.

I never understood why everyone, particularly white straight men and boys, loved the Eagles.
I just figured it was yet another white straight male thing.

I think Hotel California and Desperado are pretty high on my list of sing-along songs.

Their more famous songs are well written and showcase great playing and songwriting. But they have been played so much and for so long, they've become banal.

My roommate in college played them nonstop (along with Dan fucking Fogelberg). I hated them and my roommate!

I was kind of vaguely aware of them and then saw them in concert for Hotel California tour. At the time it felt like a revelation. Brilliant song but ultimately way overplayed.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 28, 2024 5:27 PM |
Yes.

LIfe in the Fast Lane and Heartache Tonight are great songs, but I never got the hype.
Same for Steely Dan - which makes me instantly unpopular. They just sounded interchangeable to me.
I think it was just maybe a bit too early for me - but I do really like Yacht Rock in general.

I love the Eagles man. Yes, they are overplayed. This one, I never get tired of...

by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 28, 2024 7:24 PM |
Yeah, I do. My favorite song is probably "One of These Nights."
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 28, 2024 8:35 PM |
Funny how I used to think they were Rock and now they're considered Adult Contemporary (a.k.a. Lite)

Have never quite understand why they were so popular. Very mid songs to me. Like a better Maroon Five.
Oh, I HATE Hotel California with a passion. So maybe they're just not made for me.
However, I do like Desperado.

*understood.

"Very mid songs to me."
If you use "mid" as a stand-alone adjective, this music is not for you.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 28, 2024 10:02 PM |
Sure, I liked conglomrock. Only doofuses and nerds didn’t.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 28, 2024 10:03 PM |
I call them 1970's Pot Rock.
They are of their time - it's easy listening.
I can't imagine anyone 'getting down' or pumped by their music, save maybe one song or two.
Just seems like what you'd have on in the background while a lot of people with long hair and flaired jeans passing a joint around. Post-hippie Pot Rock.

The like them more now than when I was younger. But I really like Steely Dan.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 28, 2024 10:10 PM |
R4 Sorry. I had meant Don Henley. The Eagles pretty much lost their identity after Glen Frey died.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 28, 2024 10:11 PM |
They wrote some great songs and they were great musicians. The Capitol Cities concert tape occasionally shows up on Youtube and it's just a perfect live performance.

Not at all
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 28, 2024 11:17 PM |
I loved the Eagles!!!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 28, 2024 11:22 PM |
IMO, Henley was more central to the group than Frey.
